Health: Wise, future of Smith, Sosa, Etc.
By Matthew Cerrone - May 7, 2008 7:30 am

Matt Wise will likely pitch again today in a minor-league rehab start, meaning a) he will have finally pitched on back-to-back days, and b) will be one step closer to re-joining the Mets this weekend in New York.

Once Wise is promoted, a current pitcher from the team’s pitching staff will be displaced.

it does not appear the Mets will carry the extra pitcher, and play short on the bench, seeing as how they are seemingly always playing short on the bench to begin with…as such, the future’s of Joe Smith, Jorge Sosa and Nelson Figueroa all seem to be in question…for Matt Wise…matt who…exactly

…my bet is that the Mets drag their feet on this decision up to the absolute last minute…

…i have no idea how or what they’re going to dowhat i fear is that this team will cater towards contract issues, and not just put the best possible team on the field…and that’s so frustrating

Meanwhile, Pedro Martinez threw a side session in St. Lucie yesterday; Orlando Hernandez is still wearing a boot; and Ramon Castro remains on target for a possible weekend return.

wouldnt it just make sense to send heilman down. and make him a starter . and when he is ready bring him up…you can clearly see that figgy and pelfrey arent the answer !!!

I would also make sense to remove an OF from the roster. Pagan, Chavez, and Anderson are redundant, and there is no need to keep all three.

I’m thinking the Mets would be best with Figueroa in the pen as the long man, but are they ready to give Armas Jr. a try?

how is figgy not the answer. i agree that pelf isn’t, that he was rushed up, and that he’s destined to be a 4 starter at most on a team like pittsburgh. but figueroa, beside yesterdays game, has been the third best starter on the team, behind santana and maine. if anyone isnt the answer, its pelf, ollie, heilman, sosa, and WILLIE! we can’t throw figgy under the bus after one start bec he seems to be one of the only guys out their with heart. i’d take 18 more figgy’s with a santana, wright, wagner, alou, beltran, and a church. long live figueroa junior and senior!

Figs ERA is nearly 5 and he cant get lefties out at all, nor can he work through a lineup a 3rd time. He is clearly NOT the mets 3rd best starter, nor is he the answer.

He could be an excellent Darren Oliver impersonater.

You know, I’ve been saying DFA Sosa, and I would be fine with that. 100%.

But the more I think about it, who the hell is this guy Wise? Maybe he will be horrendous. So maybe the right move is Smith down, so if Wise is craptastic, Smith can be recalled forthwith.

I think the right move is for Sosa to be sent down. Heilman should have been made a starter 2 years ago. Not going to happen.

I don’t believe Sosa has options to be sent down unless he miraculously gets injured (wink, wink).

or clears waivers, which he probably won’t with teams so desperate for pitching.

yea, Sosa could possible decline the assigment and elect to be a free agent. Not sure of his status with that.

I agree Matt….Sosa is clearly the “guy to go”, and Joe smith is a much better choice to stay up here.

Sosa has a career ERA+ of 94, and he is very consistent with that number, meaning he is consistently below average.

Yes he makes $2M, but so what? I don’t want a pennant chance riding on Jorge Freakin Sosa!

I am thinking that FIggy to the pen for the long man role is a good idea. Could be perfect for him. Long man, swing guy, spot starter. GUess this could push SOsa out the door (trade the man!), but then Wise also needs a home.

After looking at his numbers yesterday, it might be time to try and get use out of Armas. So, the moves could be:

Trade Sosa (is this even possible? Pitching is in demand, right?), send Smith down temporarily, call up Armas for the rotation, Wise for the pen, and slot Figgy in as the long man.

I honestly don’t think we would miss Sosa, especially if you had Figgy out there to cover the long man role.

I won’t waste time pushing for the Heilman to AAA to work on his stuff as a starter. Makes too much sense.

Agreed though that the contracts will drive the decision in the end.

can we trade Sosa for a low level guy?

Sosa should go, Delgado should go, Willie should go and Castillo should go. We know we’re stuck with Castillo but Sosa, Willie and Delgado should be sent packing while we still have time. It’s not going to be early forever and that is something everybody needs to stop saying that it’s early and we’re at .500. Being at .500 is not good enough for this team it needs a kick and it needs it fast.

Smith should get sent down, he is basically useless and the reason our pen is so bad (well one of the reason) is that 3/7 of it can only pitch to one or 2 batters at a time!!! and Smith is the one of the 3 with options to the minors left.

Also if Wise sucks (or Turnbow when/if) we can call up Smith, we cant get back Sosa…

Once and for all…Heilman as a starter is not going to happen, if you cant get guys out one time through a lineup….

he was a terrible starter remember, if he hadnt had one brilliant game we would be equating him to Chan Ho Park, so please give it a rest.
