preGame: Mets at Dodgers (Game Three)
By Mike Nichols - May 7, 2008 2:30 pm

The Game:

The Mets (16-15) play the finale of their three-games series versus the Dodgers (19-14) tonight at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, game at 3:10 pm EST.

The Lineup:

…i’m shocked to see Damion Easley not in the lineup today playing second because, a) i would think willie would give castillo the day off and, b) easley is batting .375 against penny in his career…

The Pitchers:

RHP John Maine (3-2, 3.48 ERA) starts for the Mets. Maine earned a win in his last start on May 2 versus the Diamondbacks allowing two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out six over 6.0 IP. He has allowed two earned runs or less in last five starts. In three career starts versus the Dodgers, Maine is 0-3 with a 5.06 ERA.

RHP Brad Penny (5-2, 3.19 ERA) takes the hill for the Dodgers. In his las starts on May 2 versus the Rockies, Penny earned a win surrendering three runs on three hits and four walks while striking out one over 5.0 IP. Penny is 5-11 with a 5.66 ERA in 19 career starts versus the Mets.

The Notes:

David Wright is batting .643 with 2 HR and 6 RBI in 14 career at-bats versus Penny.

The Dodgers bullpen is 9-2 with a 2.77 ERA this season, striking out 105 batters through 117.0 IP.

Rafael Furcal is 5-for-9 (.556) with a homerun in his career versus Maine.

    fire willie

    • mrose says:

thanks for bringing something to the conversation!

      • johnolerud says:

it’s straight and to the point. no more speculating about what he is thinking, or reasons behind his idiotic decisions. Just fire the enemy already.

    • Ollie Ollie Oxen Free Pass says:

Yea…at least Willie won’t use us to “prove you’re not about the money” and flee for Seattle.

  3. Ollie Ollie Oxen Free Pass says:

    Prediction for today.

    Ollie: 0IP, 0H, 0ER, 0K, ND

    • YaGottaHaveFun says:

and boras’ demands will go up $1M per year

    • Roach2 says:

He’ll find a way to walk one or two guys…just WAIT!

      • Ollie Ollie Oxen Free Pass says:

I think Ollie should start stepping on the line and Delgado, Beltran, Castillo and Wright should start hopping over it.

  4. If the Mets lose today I say they fire willie and rick peterson and hire Guiseppe Franco and The Verizon Fios Tech to right this sinking ship.

  5. ABQMetsFan says:

Seriously though, how many weak grounders and fastballs to the knee cap does Castillo have to take before Willie sits him down and give Easly more playing time?

  6. NY Cuban says:

Willie’s gut told him to stick with Castillo. Why would he think about Easley. Besides…taking Alou out and moving Church to 5th allows him to try to prove to the fans how stupid we all are for asking for Castillo to be moved from the 2 hole.

    • adropofvenom says:

Castillo batting 2nd > Pagan batting 5th, which was the other scenario with both Alou and Delgado getting the day off.

      • mackey_sassers_arm says:

you must not be paying attention. Everything Willie does is wrong. If someone grounds out, it’s because willie didn’t motivate him properly. If a pitcher gets shelled, it’s because willie doesn’t have confidence in him. If a pitcher has a good game it’s because willie got lucky and that pitcher would have had an even better game with a different manager. If someone hits a homerun for the mets it’s just a matter of luck and was hit in spite of willie.

        • Ollie Ollie Oxen Free Pass says:

If Willie wins manager of the year, it’s because his brother was the Governor of Florida.

        • mackey_sassers_arm says:

Art Howe once won manager of the year… want him back?

        • Ollie Ollie Oxen Free Pass says:

Definitely not. Believe it or not, I’m a Willie supporter and always have been. Art Howe was blessed with 3 excellent starting pitchers as well as a very deep lineup and “The Jacket”.

Fact is, Art Howe couldn’t hold a candle to Willie. I just think the end is near.

      • NY Cuban says:

Pagan batting 2nd, Easley in the 6th hole.

        • mackey_sassers_arm says:

pagan stinks and Easley shouldn’t ever start.

        • Ollie Ollie Oxen Free Pass says:

Anderson Hernandez should start and Castillo should be bought out.

        • mackey_sassers_arm says:

as bad as you might think castillo is, he is hitting about 100 points higher than ahern would. and he is a better baserunner.

        • Ollie Ollie Oxen Free Pass says:

          It is sunny outside today.

        • Ollie Ollie Oxen Free Pass says:

wow mackey, was waiting for you to say it was snowing.

i would rather watch anderson hernandez bat 100 points lower than castillo (that’s a rough estimate anyway. would like to see where you get these numbers), but have a greater chance of improving over the next 4 years. i could live with poor performance, as long as it is youth and has a chance of getting better.

for example, i say let’s live with pelfrey’s lumps right now. get em out of the way.

        • mackey_sassers_arm says:

Where do I get my numbers?

Anderson Hernandez career batting average - .138 through 87 at bats.
          2008 Castillo - .237 through 97 at bats.

Sorry it wasn’t exactly 100 points. pretty close though, huh?

And just becasue someone is young, doesn’t mean they are going to turn into a productive hitter. Some people (like hernandez) just suck. Castillo is an all-star and a winner.

        • mackey_sassers_arm says:

Oh, and a-hern is batting an even .200 in AAA with a .252 OBP and only 2 SBs with one CS. He is junk, I don’t care how old he is.

        • Ollie Ollie Oxen Free Pass says:

I didn’t say he is guaranteed to get better. I said there is at least a chance he will get better. Whereas, Castillo will either remain a constant or he will regress (unless he starts hanging out with Barry Bonds’ dealer).

        • Ollie Ollie Oxen Free Pass says:

…and if 87 at bats were enough to judge a major league hitter, then Beltran is horrible.

        • mackey_sassers_arm says:

you asked where i got my numbers… baseball-reference… castillo regressing or remaining constant is better than a-hern can ever dream to be

        • mackey_sassers_arm says:

if 87 at bats aren’t enough to judge a major league hitter, perhaps everyone should slow down on their rush to kill castillo. At least he has proven over a long career that he has the ability to hit ML pitching.

  7. Frank Taveras says:

At this point, how can any observer of this team be shocked that Willie doesn’t do something that makes perfect sense to someone of average intelligence?

  8. NY Cuban says:

I’m glad Beltran is over his flu.

    • Gasface77 says:

Yeah, you know those “24 hour bugs.” What a pansy.

    • Nate W. says:

I’m glad we havent heard what his percentage is today… ;)

      • Ollie Ollie Oxen Free Pass says:

Typical Mike and the Mad Dog listener. Laugh when Mike talks about Beltran being out with the flu, blah blah blah.

I admit, it is funny when they talk about Beltran’s percentage. However, for some reason they don’t belittle Yankee injuries. Gotta protect the ace of the future (0-4, 7.50ERA notwithstanding)

        • Nate W. says:

          what?

        • Ollie Ollie Oxen Free Pass says:

All Francesa does every year is wait for Beltran to get hurt so he can start yelling and screaming about how Beltran says he’s about 90%.

Maybe if Francesa got off his fat a$$, he would realize that his knees are 50%.

  9. ABQMetsFan says:

I still have a good feeling about today’s game.
    Let’s go Mets!

  10. Dave Magadan says:

Why does Willie continue to jerk Ryan Church around in the batting order? Ugh.

    • metties1 says:

I’m surprised Delgado is not in there vs a RHP and sat against the next LHP. He’s been getting into a little bit of a groove lately

      • Nate W. says:

Its too bad the Dodgers didnt just start Kuo last night, then Delgado would have likely sat.

    • Nate W. says:

…because he cant bat him 3 times out of 9?

He’s the only one who puts up good AB’s almost all the time,

I’d try batting him 2nd and 5th in the same game…

  11. ABQMetsFan says:

    Matt Cerrone on SNY pregame

  12. PacmanJones says:

Fire Willie. Like I’ve been saying all year, whenever the Mets have a change to step on the throat or the complete opposite, get swept, Willie breaks out the B or C lineup and plays with the batting order.

“FIRE WILLIE ‘ISIAH’ RANDOPE and CUT CARLOS DELGRAMPA”

^^^ I had the following sign last saturday home game and displayed it while tailgating at the marina, on the walk to the stadium, in line for the stadium and paraded it all throughout the stadium. The security guard at the gate read it for about 10 minutes before deciding to finally let me in, with the help of some fans passing by screaming “NO CENSORSHIP.” Thank you for that if you’re out there.

The overall reaction of everyone who viewed the sign, literally, must have been over 10k was overwhemingly positive. Literally 95% greeted me with cheers and thumbs up, while the other 5% questioned, “Who would we replace with Willie?”

I think at this point, its safe to say ANYONE. Jerry Manuel? Gary Carter? You? Me? Cerrone? ANYONE, FIRE WILLIE!

I’ll be back Saturday against the Reds with another sign, look for me!

    • SayItAintSo says:

PLease put up a sign that reads

      WE DONT BELIEVE!!!

Because that is how the fans are feeling right now…

    • Roach2 says:

Must be nice to be so witty and to have the time to make such a sign…must’ve been huge

      • PacmanJones says:

Yeah, its quite nice, however the time? About 10 minutes when I was drunk, so it’d be nice to have more free time actually.

It was Huge, about 3 feet by 2 feet. Oh, and I’m huge, I’m sort of a big deal.

        • kandiman says:

I once ate 2 hot dogs with sauerkraut in 1 sitting!!!!

then I went out and told everyone and anyone who would listen to me.

        • PacmanJones says:

Are you sure that was sauerkraut?

    • Ollie Ollie Oxen Free Pass says:

don’t worry about the mets. just worry about the beating you’re going to take twice a year at the hands of big blue!

      • PacmanJones says:

ZING! Big Blue actually got swept last year in the regular season, but won when it counted. They were the better team that day last year, but careful about your talk about sweeps when you got swept yourself last year. Congrats on having the worst quarterback in nfl history to win a superbowl. Leads the league in interceptions and he’s the super bowl mvp, just shows what a toss up the postseason is. Good luck this year, can’t wait for the cancer Shockey to be back causing drama on the sidelines yelling at Sheli !

        • Roach2 says:

Worst QB in history to win a super bowl? Clearly you don’t remember Trent Dilfer, Brad Johnson or Mark Rypien.

Eli was surgical and showed his true worth. Don’t be so jealous. Romo’s a nice guy…

i wish they would put you on Jeopardy, Pacman (the fan, not the player)…i would watch the episode every day for the rest of my life

          I love sports fans…

        • Ollie Ollie Oxen Free Pass says:

I think it is absolutely hilarious that a Cowboy fan can even say a word. The post season is a crap shoot….that explains the Pats dynasty.

We did get swept in the regular season. But the fact remains, when Eli goes to Mexico before the first round bye next year with Abigail and teammates, he will have to remove the ring from his finger, to avoid unsightly tan lines.

Have fun with TO, Pacman Jones, and Tank “I got guns (and not muscles)” Johnson. Talk to me about locker room cancer.

Not to mention, you’re in good hands with Wade Phillips at the helms. Hahahahahaha!!!! So, keep raising those Division title banners. I’ll take the 32nd pick in the draft instead.

        • PacmanJones says:

Thanks for reiterating my point about the playoffs being a crapshoot. I wasn’t saying a word buddy, just simply saying don’t start saying you’re going to sweep teams in the regular season, when you got swept in the regular season. Know what the argument is about before you jump into it spewing your nonsense. Your right, TO & Tank Johnson have been such big team cancers for the dallas cowboys, you obviously don’t follow the NFL outside of your own team if you think that was the case.

        • PacmanJones says:

I will talk to you about locker room cancer, Shockey intimidated Sheli on and off of the field. He repeatedly would yell and flail his arms at Eli when Eli threw the ball at his shoestrings. When Shockey went down and was quiet, the Giants won. If that’s not the definition of team cancer, please enlighten me.

        • blains2000 says:

TO=Cancer. No way around it. 13-3 covers it up. But you could see it during the Monday night game in Buffalo. TO moaning / yelling on the sidelines to everyone after each of the 6 interceptions. He was just about to lose it but then Buffalo blew it.

TO’s two good behavior years are up. He will show himself this year.

        • Ollie Ollie Oxen Free Pass says:

Cowboys are the superior regular season team. I whole-heartedly agree.

        • mackey_sassers_arm says:

I have as many playoff wins as Romo.

        • Ollie Ollie Oxen Free Pass says:

Don’t understand where a Cowboys fan can even say a word in this argument.

You were 13-3. This was your season. You swept the Giants in the regular season. First round bye. Vacation in Mexico.

But you blew it. 18-1 forever.

        • gomets6091 says:

the Cowboys were the 2006 Mets….I’d rather be the 2006 Cardinals, thank you very much. Go Big Blue

    • blains2000 says:

Pacman - stay out of the clubs buddy!

      • PacmanJones says:

I got the pole in my house now! I’m all set! Thanks for your well wishes!

  13. Mets Fan on Wall St. says:

+/- on runners LOB today? Just asked the guy that sits next to me at work, he took the under at 7.

  14. dr jones says:

    Ok guys

my vote for the new coaching staff is

manager- Walter Sobchak (John Goodman, big lebowski
hitting - Ty webb (Chevy chase, caddie shack)
pitching- Enrico Palotzo (Leslie Nielsen, naked gun)
first base- Peter Venkman (bill murry, Ghostbusters)
third base- Roy Munson (woody Harrelson, kingpin)

  15. zen says:

the mental ward of the mets fan base is out this afternoon :)

    let’s go mets!

  16. VelvetFoot says:

I just listened to the Ed Coleman pregame show on wfan.com .
Will the game come over this site too?

  17. VelvetFoot says:

Well, it just stopped, so I guess not.
    Too bad.

  18. khmustache says:

odds on dewitt getting a grand slam today?

  19. PacmanJones says:

Everyone else ready for a quick and easy 1-2-3 inning? And I’m talking about the top of the 1st.

  20. VelvetFoot says:

I knew it was too good to be true.
Even XM doesn’t work on mlb over the computer.

  21. NY Cuban says:

    Oh…and since I hadn’t said it…and since my negativity might be misconstrued…

    LETS GO METS!!!

    • ABQMetsFan says:

Nah. Your negativity was not “misconstrued”. Everyone here except one person wants the mets to win. But you gotta call a spade a spade. And right now, the mets have no fight in them.

  22. Nate W. says:

yea, I would have given Castillo today off due to poor performance. I dont need his knees to act up to give him a day off…

Pagan 2nd and Easley 6th would give this lineup some depth and pop on a day when Delgado and Alou are both sitting.

I guess Willie doesnt want to give 4 regulars a day off at the same time today, he usually does that on these get away games.

  23. SayItAintSo says:

i am hopeful that we CAN win this game, but we need maine to go 6 at least.. then schoe, sanchez, wagner for the win.

I have to say though, the lineup is really disgusting… i vomitted in my mouth when i read it..

  24. ABSeabra says:

    Who’s pitching Friday?

  25. iamatwork says:

I love Willie. Against a fastball pitcher move up the guy who can’t hit fastballs and don’t put in Easley, who CRUSHES fastballs.

  26. PacmanJones says:

    O’Bama/Randolph 08!

  27. cpai76 says:

Willie is a Damn fool, Church is the the only one on the team thats hitting consistently, and you drop him out of the spot that he is Excelling in? and put the slumping Castillo back in the 2 spot?

    WIllie needs to go

    • Nate W. says:

any lineup today was going to look terrible…

you need 5 good hitters to have a lineup in any order, and right now they only have Church and Alou, with a little Reyes and Wright sometimes.

    • Jova1931 says:

Um, maybe that allows Wright/Beltran to see better pitches. Makes plenty of sense to me.

    • eligoodrich says:

and look how the team does, get oer yourself.

  28. PacmanJones says:

George W. Bush > Willie Randope.

  29. zen says:

    fire rick down!

    free chip ambres!

  30. PacmanJones says:

Jose Reyes for ‘forgotten mlb superstar turned reggaetone dancer of the year’

    • Ollie Ollie Oxen Free Pass says:

PacmanJones for “former superstar defensive back turned dance club goer/shooter”

      • PacmanJones says:

Thanks for the compliment, however I can’t be a superstar when I’ve only played 2 NFL seasons and the most interceptions I’ve had in one season was 4. Thanks for that compliment though!

        • Ollie Ollie Oxen Free Pass says:

Any time Pacman. I asked Plax and he said you were tough to tackle in 2006.

  31. PacmanJones says:

Why was there no response when I asked if everyone was ready for a quick and easy 1-2-3 top of the 1st?

  32. SayItAintSo says:

I was feeling positive until the game started, i saw reyes ground out, and then castillo get up..

now i feel like i do during every game this team plays. Its just not fun anymore for me, and thats that.

i hate watching this team.. they make me sick..

    • NY Cuban says:

LOL…I’m with you. They are painful to watch. No fun whatsoever. I used to look forward to day games to make the day go by quicker at work. Now I almost rather work.

  33. Dirtysanchez says:

Hey i cant see the game (at work =/) can someone try to give a inning by inning update?

    • ABQMetsFan says:

mets down 1-2-3. still wasnt ready for it.

    • HOFMets57 says:

Reyes chases a ball on the ground (AGAIN). Castillo grounds weakly to 2B (like he always does) and Wright sent the first pitch he saw to the RF warning track. 1-2-3 for Penny.

  34. crclark79 says:

Obviously thats not leaving the infield……Nice to see someone make the opposing pitcher work a little bit though

  35. Nick from Bayside says:

I understand giving Alou a day off, especially against a righthander. I would have understood giving Castillo a day off, since it’s a day game after a night game. At first I thought it was dumb to bench Delgado against a righthander, especially when he seems to be having better at-bats of late, but he did not hit Penny very well last year (1-8, in a small sample size). I still would have started him today…

Maine will need to be on his game. It would be disappointing to finish this trip with a losing record.

  36. dykstraw says:

    FYI guys…

four guys on the mets have OPSes over .800 vs. penny on their career. one of them is david wright. the other three are delgado, alou and easley. who are all out of the lineup.

do you think the manager knows this? because it took me three minutes of research to find this out.

personally i think a manager who doesn’t know this, or ignores this when putting together a lineup, should not keep his job.

    • Nick from Bayside says:

Good point. Just looked it up myself. It’s possible that some of these guys are just tired, but….all of them?? ugh

      • dykstraw says:

tired? lol, it’s an off day tomorrow.

and whatever, pagan and anderson have been awesome so far today. but that doesn’t change the fact that wilie often makes decisions that fly blatantly in the face of reason.

        • Nick from Bayside says:

I agree with you 100%. Like the game Reyes got knocked out at 2nd, and he left him in. I don’t care what Reyes tells him there, you take him out of the game and protect one of your most important players. Instead he left him in - turned out ok, but imagine if he had suffered complications or hurt himself further??!!

Anyway, let’s enjoy the Mets playing well today…but Willie is/will cost us more games because of his decisions

  37. SayItAintSo says:

    i think pagan is dead…

but hey, did he catch the ball???

  38. backinbusiness says:

    No fight, huh guys?

    • ABQMetsFan says:

Nice catch. But that is just one player. there are 24 others that need to show the same intensity. Maybe this will be the spark plug.

  39. zen says:

pagan and the mets have no heart and don’t care about winning

    • PacmanJones says:

Pagan has heart and cares, he makes the league minimum and has newborn babies to feed. Fat, blind and lazy idiots making 16 million could care less.

  40. SayItAintSo says:

    he caught it!!!

    Nice catch angel!!!

Now if only you could get a damn hit!!!!!

  41. crclark79 says:

    love the intensity from Pagan

  42. ABQMetsFan says:

I thought mets pitchers were not allowed to pitch 1-2-3 innings

  43. zen says:

    fire the team cardiologist!

    hire a fan psychiatrist!

  44. backinbusiness says:

There really shouldn’t be more “1-2-3 I TOLD YOU SO METS SUCK” comments than “Great start Maine; Ridiculously awesome catch Pagan” comments.

    Let’s go mets!

  45. mookstra says:

The trainers looked a little slow getting out to Pagan. FIRE THE BUMS

  46. AlouIsNasty says:

That was a very nice play/awkward fall.

    Gotta love Pagan

  47. backinbusiness says:

Pitcher’s mound camera angle on LAD feed — very odd.

  48. ABQMetsFan says:

Should Ronnie and Gary Cohen be fired as well? They are hating on the mets right now for anyone watching SNY

    • SayItAintSo says:

thats the only reason i watch, because they dont BS the fans like the team and mgrs do

  49. npanzeca says:

4 up 4 down, the beat goes on

  50. ABQMetsFan says:

    Church is our only beast

  51. npanzeca says:

1st and 2nd one out, get someone in Marlon!

  52. twassel says:

How about this: people with nothing positive to say, shut up for just a few minutes, and give the rest of us a break.

    • backinbusiness says:

Things are going well so far this inning, so they will.

Maybe Matt can make a separate “game day” thread for the Fire Willies.

      • crclark79 says:

agreed……..or maybe a different thread for those who just spit venom all game long. Listening to a constant stream of negativity gets tiring.

    • npanzeca says:

How about you go someplace else? I’ll speak anytime I want to.

  53. backinbusiness says:

gotta work penny to 40 here.

  54. Mets Fan on Wall St. says:

Uh oh, two hits off of Penny. Who do you think he’ s going to confront at the plate this time?

  55. PacmanJones says:

    Marlon Anderson, DP.

  56. npanzeca says:

    Nice job Marlon!

  57. cafuq says:

nice job so far from our bench guys

  58. npanzeca says:

25 pitches this inning. Pop one here Casanova!

  59. NY Cuban says:

No…i actually had to do some work and just got back. Surprised we have the lead.

  60. backinbusiness says:

Good job to the 5,6,7 hitters! Hit w/RISP, yeah!

    Penny’s over 40.

Maine at 10. Keep it up.

    • Dirtysanchez says:

hey man is this sarcasm or did they score?
      -at work…………….=(

      • backinbusiness says:

nope they are playing great (its upside down from CBS sportsline).

        Wright struck out swinging.
Castillo singled to center, Casanova scored, Reyes to second.
        Reyes walked.
Maine sacrificed to pitcher, Casanova to second.
Casanova singled to right, Pagan and Anderson scored.
Anderson ground-rule doubled to center, Church scored, Pagan to third.
Pagan singled to left center, Church to second.
        Church singled to center.
        Beltran lined out to first.

    nice job Cassy!!

  62. SayItAintSo says:

    YIPPY SKIPPY DIPPY DOO!!!!!!

    THE SCRUBS COME THROUGH!!!!!

Now this is good offense right here.. this i can watch…

  63. zen says:

typical willie with the ‘b’ line-up.

    • gipper91375 says:

or is the “B” lineup the “A’ lineup?

      Hmmm…more to meditate on.

    • dykstraw says:

yeah because this game is totally and definitely over with a 3-0 lead just like last night.

one game does not erase a season’s worth of bad decisions.

      • zen says:

        kleenex in aisle 5

      • eligoodrich says:

where was there a season worth of bad moves?
because i recall the mets being in first place from may 16th last season until the last day.then had a solid off season, then they are 1 game back of first.so again where did this year take place?

  64. ABQMetsFan says:

Penny looks horrible. He looks like he wants another turkey leg but is too tired to make it to the fridge

  65. npanzeca says:

    Lets go Reyes!

  66. NY Cuban says:

The scrubs “want it ” more!

  67. Nick from Bayside says:

Great Marlon! I guess Willie’s hunch worked!

  68. ABQMetsFan says:

HOORAY! We cleared the pitcher’s spot

  69. PacmanJones says:

Willie trusted his guys today! Which guys out the pen will be trusted later however? Sosa for the 5th consecutive day? Heilman when we’re up 3-2 in the 7th? Time will only tell.

  70. backinbusiness says:

Willie must have given a kick-ass motivational speech today!
    ;)

    • ABQMetsFan says:

      somebody has to

      • backinbusiness says:

Fully agree, but considering bad Met play is considered around some parts here to be “Willie not motivating his guys,” is the converse true?

I hope it was a player who gave the speech.

Hell, I hope it was RBI Castillo!

    • GeorgeThomas says:

“Guys, y’all bes play good today or I’moh be fresh toasted”

    • NYMBosco says:

      Fire willie!

  71. backinbusiness says:

I sure hope Kuo is too tired to come in today.

    • Mets Fan on Wall St. says:

Just going to say that. Although he didn’t waste many pitches during his appearance.

  72. jcervone7 says:

You know you’re having a rough day when Reyes won’t swing at your pitches!

  73. theperfectgame says:

    Reyes walked!

Wow, this really is our day!

  74. zen says:

castillo can’t hit in the two-spot.

    • theperfectgame says:

Definitely not. Obviously a waste of space that never drives in runs. Not last night. Not today.

      Oh….

      • theperfectgame says:

What? He drove in a run? And Omar only signed him to a 4 year contract?!? Fire Omar! He should’ve gotten 7.

      • dykstraw says:

who looked at strike three with the tying run on second last night?

        • theperfectgame says:

The same guy who got one of the 2 hits with RISP. You can’t expect him to do it all by himself. He’s not gonna get a hit every time there’s a runner on. If only one of the other 11 ABs with RISP had gone a little better. Oh well, spilled milk and whatnot.

        • dykstraw says:

he could swing the bat at a strike with the game on the line.

      • zen says:

ruben gotay is lighting it up on the braves bench

        • dykstraw says:

ruben gotay would not have required an irrational four year contract and the requisite commitment from the GM and manager despite prolonged sucking

    • gipper91375 says:

Actually, I agree with you and therealsince86 on this one. I like Church 6th in the order to lengthen it. Catillo just isn’t made to be an 8th place hitter.

    • backinbusiness says:

a curious moment for this comment.

  75. crclark79 says:

Penny on the ropes in the 2nd inning……………. I love this………..almost as much as I loved Casanova’s slide right there. Go get em big guy!

  76. gipper91375 says:

    Nice.

Now, c’mon David, start to break out of the slump! Go the other way, baby!

  77. arudeawakenin says:

wow, what a difference this lineup is without Delgado

  78. npanzeca says:

Nice inning there, 4 runs and made Penny work hard, lots of pitches.

  79. SayItAintSo says:

wright still looks clueless and upset up there

  80. dykstraw says:

once again we let an opponent off the ropes early

  81. twassel says:

Damn, only four runs. We have no heart. Fire the ballboy.

    • NYMBosco says:

What the heck is wrong with wright? We sure don’t need him in a prolonged slump….jeez……

      • npanzeca says:

We got 4 runs so no worries, he’s gonna hit a bomb today, mark it down.

  82. Dirtysanchez says:

lol i clicked back and just saw a big K on gameday lol
david has to relax and stop trying to do too much

  83. cafuq says:

maybe wright could use a day off. he does not look comfortable at the plate

    • npanzeca says:

      He’ll get one tomorrow

    • NYMBosco says:

I agree. As much as we need wright in the everyday lineup willie should sit him down for a day….he needs to re-focus….very disturbing to see wright go through another slump. He is becoming too much of a streak hitter and when he goes bad he really stinks it up! Remember last April he had no HRs for the entire month….

  84. huge_mets_fan11 says:

Seriously what is wrong with Wright? He swings at everythings now.

    • theperfectgame says:

As long as he doesn’t start taking it out on the field with him he’ll be fine. Everyone hits rough patches. He’s in a long one. And yet he’s still leading the team in most offensive categories. We are lucky to have him. (Seriously, we tried to trade him for Jose Cruz Jr!)

      • huge_mets_fan11 says:

Yeah I agree totally, it just frustrating to see because he is such a great hitter you don’t expect him to swing at everything.

  85. VelvetFoot says:

I’m tired of the LA-centric anti-Met view of dibble/kennedy on xm home plate.

  86. backinbusiness says:

What is UP with David? I get slumps, but he is the best hitter in baseball against the Dodgers, and even more so against Penny.

Dude, relax. Yeah, you ARE that good.

  87. miker94 says:

it’s like, when you see wright with an 0-2 count, he WILL strike out. you NEVER see him do anything productive with an 0-2 count, unreal. and i love the guy, and unlike most guys on the mets, it’s a fact that in a day or so wright will be a beast again. just not now, oh well.

    • kjmcc0729 says:

Dude, he like lead the league in batting average with 2 strikes last year.

  88. blains2000 says:

I think D Dub needs a girlfriend to relax him. Anyone know Carrie Underwood?

  89. huge_mets_fan11 says:

It is great that we got 4 runs but we need to keep it up. If we do that I will be very happy.

  90. PacmanJones says:

That was amazing! A four-spot! Have we had one since 06? The sarcasm from the Pro-Willie crowd should really relax. We had a great inning, thats awesome, way to play baseball! Don’t start acting like Castillo, Willie and Marlon Anderson are the answers to our problems. Enjoy the game, but don’t base this one game as a foundation for your pro-willie analysis.

    • twassel says:

Does the anti-Willie crowd ever give it a rest? Talk among yourselves.

      • PacmanJones says:

The rest will come when he’s removed, forcefully. We’re all still mets fans though. Relax. Don’t act like anti-willie wants the team to lose because we’re passionate for change!

    • metinDC23 says:

I could say the same thing about the anti-Wille crowd last night.

    • dykstraw says:

have we had one since ‘06? isn’t that the point?

  91. SayItAintSo says:

yeah.. that inning was awesome, but on a side note..

wright does not look right at all…

even inhis interviews, he seems held back and lost… i think he is getting affeced by the booing more than anyone, because he is the leader of the team, to me anyways…

i think david needs to relax and justhave fun out there… after that error he made last night, he looked like oliver perez, disgusted and upset, and you cant really hit when youre so emotionally effected like that.

come on david, you ARE the METS!!!!!

    • metinDC23 says:

He was booed a lot last April and broke out to have quite a nice year.

  92. I_Need_More_Cowbell_Please says:

    The Maine Man!!

  93. PacmanJones says:

    Johnny Maine! Take Notes OP-P!!!

Will today be the day we have a pitcher go past 7.1? Please?!

  94. twassel says:

19 pitches in two innings. That’s more like it Maine!

  95. Gasface77 says:

Maine’s pitches look very lively today. More than usual.

  96. cafuq says:

Maine is on fire so far, keep it up and your pitch count down

  97. backinbusiness says:

2 IP; 9 pitches. Keep it rocking, Maine man.

  98. stickguy says:

DW is a mess. Penny can’t trhow a strike, is on the ropes, and he Ks on 3 pitches?

I agree about the day off, but that would require having a back up 3B on the roster. Oops, guess Omar forgot that one! Although Easley isn’t playing today, and that is the closest thing we got.

Let’s see, 4 runs early, looking like a blowout. THis sounds familiar somehow….. Like I should know how this is going to end!

Man, I am hoping for the best, but if they do the same thing as last night, it shan’t be pretty at Shea on Friday.

  99. Nate W. says:

    Maine loves the day games…

Pagan’s shoulder might be the out the Mets need to get Wise on the roster. Then when Castro comes back maybe they can keep Casanova around as a PH/C tandem.

  100. rogasm says:

Really hope Beltran can get going. That can only help Wright see some better pitches.

  101. Nate W. says:

doesnt it seem like these Mets B lineups always have these big days? Odd how that works. Pagan, Anderson and Casanova all with big hits in that inning…

  102. backinbusiness says:

    everybody hits!

    • Nate W. says:

      woohoo!!

was that in the old Philly ballpark where that guy would always get on mic saying that?

  103. npanzeca says:

Nice run and hit there by Church.

  104. npanzeca says:

    Lets break it wide open!

  105. ABQMetsFan says:

put the screws on these bitches. pagan steals 2nd

  106. backinbusiness says:

Marlon is looking better at the plate. Obviously didn’t work the count there, but he is making great contact.

62 pitches for Penny so far.

  107. mex84 says:

Wow! Joey Votto 3 hr day. Get it done Omar!

  108. cafuq says:

    that was great
remember when reyes would steal bases

  109. GeorgeThomas says:

    I guess Beltran’s flu-like symptoms are gone?

    • krumbledkookie says:

Face facts - Beltran was benched - not for disciplinary reasons, but because he’s been sucking eggs. Hopefully the day off was of some worth.

  110. backinbusiness says:

The pitch out stolen base. My favorite!

  111. jcervone7 says:

Awful defense on that, the SS needs to get in there, he can’t just sit back. I’ll take it though.

  112. crclark79 says:

    great inning there

  113. ABQMetsFan says:

Penny and Martin are gonna start slapping each other. I am calling it now.

  114. gipper91375 says:

LA feed just replayed the Pagan catch. Got to gove Dodger fans credit, they were clapping for Pagan as he made the play and flipped over the wall. Darn sight more class than the Philthy fans booing Reyes when he was knocked out.

Good to see th ebench guys playing so well overall. Penny must hate seeing the Mets on his schedule. What is he, 5-11 vs the Mets?

    • ABQMetsFan says:

Can’t really blame the Philly fans. there is only so much you can expect from them considering their mental disabilities.

  115. GeorgeThomas says:

    Ok, I’ll say it first… Maine’s throwing a no-hitter.

  116. rogasm says:

Why is Endy in LF now? Who came out? Injury?

  117. AlouIsNasty says:

    I knew he looked injured…

  118. AlouIsNasty says:

Pagan got injured on that diving catch + hitting + sliding into second

  119. backinbusiness says:

Why is Endy in? Is Pagan hurt? Did Nate W send an email to Omar’s Blackberry?

    • Nate W. says:

Shoulder tightness from falling into the stands, or he took a taxi for some domincan food between innings…

For those of you not watching, Pagan was shown holding and flexing his shoulder and arm numerous times after he tumbled into the seats in the first inning.

  120. ABQMetsFan says:

Nice going GT. Its your freaking fault

  121. cafuq says:

wait i thought hu’s on first

  122. marvelousmarv says:

    pagan is hurt. Chavez in.

  123. PacmanJones says:

Well, it actually makes good sense. Castro’s ready for this weekend, DL Pagan, all set.

    • Gasface77 says:

There we go D Wright!!!!! Now I can leave work and turn this game off happy!!!!! …and listen to it in the car of course.

  124. MainStMets says:

yes he dove over the raiing and landed weird on his shoulder then slid head first

  125. MainStMets says:

well the C lineup has put up a 5 spot, so all the haters can be quiet, and well this looks alot like last night lol get a lead and then…

    • PacmanJones says:

So who’s exactly hating, if you’re saying it looks like last night? If you’re implying the pitching will meltdown again, who exactly is hating?

  126. backinbusiness says:

Is Pagan really hurt, or are we making creative roster room? (Hat tip to Nate W?)

  127. theperfectgame says:

Maine’s at 32 pitches through 3 innings. I keep refreshing, but, yeah, I think it’s real. Usually we’re at one out in the second when the starter hits pitch #32.

  128. PacmanJones says:

Pagan will be placed on the DL after the game, or knowing the mets they will until the last minute, so he’ll be put on the DL Friday and Castro will be called up for the Cinci series.

    • TBlz says:

Or maybe with a “traditionally” large lead, he just would rather not take chances with angel since moises only plays 3 days a week.

  129. GeorgeThomas says:

Who got the first hit for LA?

    Hu did.

That’s what I said, who got the first hit?

    Hu

I’m asking you! Who got the first hit?

    I told you, hu did!

    Who did what?

  130. theperfectgame says:

When Reyes is stepping to the plat for the third time in the fourth inning, you know you’re having a good day.

  131. marvelousmarv says:

Approx. 7,321* games played and still no hitter!

    * Assuming 1981 was a full schedule

  132. NYMBosco says:

Wow it’s amazing how our lineup seems so much more alive without Delgado in the middle clogging things up!

    • Nate W. says:

sad but true. He should hit 7th next.

Castillo was killing the lineup batting 8th, and Church and Alou belong in the RBI spots.

  133. TBlz says:

Could Dubs please get off the schneid?

  134. zen says:

4 more years of this from castillo

    • Nate W. says:

      3.81 years apparently…

He’s either going to retire, or he’ll be spending half the season on the DL in 2010 and ‘11. No way he is a regular and gets close to 500 AB’s

      • zen says:

right now my main concern is the 2011 ny mets. no way they win the world series with $6 tied up in casillo :)

too long, obviously. it’s hardly zito-esque

  135. SayItAintSo says:

    COME ON D WRIGHT!!!!!!!!

  136. backinbusiness says:

This game is just making me so happy.
    Good job Castillo.

  137. ABQMetsFan says:

we could really use a 2 out hit here DW!

  138. npanzeca says:

    Come on David!

  139. crclark79 says:

slappy with a 2b………this game is going great

  140. wallybackman'sfire says:

One day I’d like to see a Mets outfield of Ryan Church, Angel Pagan, Moises Alouu.

Surely God would be on our side on that day. Get it? Church, Angel, Moises (Spanish version of Moses….)

  141. PacmanJones says:

Wow Reyes is 0-2 and Castillo is 2-3, Willie trusted his gut!

  142. PacmanJones says:

…and Wright continues to choke with RISP. Maybe he’s spending too much time with Delgrampa.

  143. SayItAintSo says:

Im starting to like this lineup more…

    1. Reyes(s)
    2. Castillo(s)
    3. Wright(r)
    4. Beltran(s)
    5. church(l)
    6. Alou(r)
    7.Delgado(l)
    8. schneider(l)

That seems to me to be a pretty amazing 1-7

    • TBlz says:

only if castillo isnt going chop it to the middle IFers every at-bat

    • PacmanJones says:

So how much have you honestly watched Castillo play outside of today’s game?

      • Nate W. says:

Castillo was actually doing more harm batting 8th. And thats nearly impossible to do, but somehow he managed to find a way.

I like this lineup as well. Its as worthy of a trial run as any order.

    • NYMBosco says:

The lineup will look better without delgado……..

    • gipper91375 says:

      I definitely second that lineup.

  144. cafuq says:

beltran starts the next inning. hopefully we can score runs like we did the last 2 times he led off

  145. PacmanJones says:

So how much have you honestly watched Castillo play outside of today’s game?

    • SayItAintSo says:

      me?

alot.. fantasy baseball, had him in the fla years. . hes a career 300 hitter, amazing 2 hitter.. hes just in a funk, and i admit he looks bad this year, but he is a #2 hitter, not a #8 hitter.

the problem with my lineup is church and delgado need to be broken up, and schneider is lefty too.. so you end up with a lot of lefties at the ack of the order.

      • PacmanJones says:

Thanks, I meant how many games have you watched this year? Castillo is a much different (and wee bit older) player now than he was in his Florida years.

  146. khoffler says:

    I’m behind, where is Beltran?

  147. PacmanJones says:

Anybody else seeing Matt Kemp’s mugshot on cbssportsline gamecast? Haha. Classic.

  148. TBlz says:

Mainey looks good. Not nibbling. Right at em with the 5 run lead.

  149. cafuq says:

    damn he missed kent

  150. backinbusiness says:

44 pitches through 4! Go the distance, Maine!

  151. dykstraw says:

wayne hagin just called jeff kent “as dirty as pigpen in the peanuts comic strip”

    really wayne hagin? really?

  152. appleinahat says:

Looks like the bullpen may get a rest, of course its right before an off day.

    • Dirtysanchez says:

better for us. 44 through 4. thats gotta be a new record with mets pitchers this year

  153. jamesi11 says:

    Maine = BEAST

    • TBlz says:

good thing. we got two guys that are reasonably expected to give us a chance to win right now.

  154. QnsNative718 says:

Anybody check out ESPN GameCast? Gee I didnt know the Mets colors were Orange and Black now.. No one sent me a memo…

    • ravi3 says:

actually this happens when both teams have the same secondary color (secondary being the background of the logo). The away team changes to black…Same thing happens with Atlanta, and the Yanks, and any other team with a blue background…not sure how it changes for the red teams

  155. MainStMets says:

castillo hit a double to left field, quit a diff from a slapped single up the middle

pacman i am referring to all the hate that was being spread at the top of this comment page abt the lineup for the game today

  156. MainStMets says:

did keith get fired from sny or something ? he hasnt worked in ame in ages it feels like

beltran is getting robbed all over the place, loney is legit

    • gipper91375 says:

He’s just not on this West Coast roadtrip. He rarely is. He’ll go to SF, his boyhood home. Not AZ and LA.

Be thankful you get SNY at all. Most of us out of towners are stuck with opposition feeds on road trips. Brutal earlier with the D-Bags. Not a problem with Scully and the LA feed. But usually far worse than SNY (see: Nats and Fish booths).

      • ABQMetsFan says:

No joke there gipp. The AZ d-bags commentators are just awful. However, DirecTV carries SNY. I highly recommend it. I live in the southwest and I feel like i never left NY by watching SNY.

  157. TBlz says:

Sometimes you just are unlucky. Beltran is hitting the hell out of the ball this series. hopefully a sign of things to come.

  158. appleinahat says:

Anyone warming up in the dodgers bullpen? I just have the espn gamecast.

  159. MainStMets says:

    YEA MARLON!!!!

  160. cafuq says:

    nice hustle marlon common nova

  161. MainStMets says:

geographical location is in my favor as a NJ resident i guess, tell you what though sometimes id rather be on west coast so there would never be a 145 am finish

    • TBlz says:

A few 145 am finishes are FAR better than all the 4pm starts.

    • gipper91375 says:

It is nice for the W coast games. But the E coast games start at like 4pm. Great if I am at home as it leaves the evening open,…but often just have to DVR those games and watch when I get home from work. Still not bad, as you can FF the ads, stoppages in play, etc.

  162. backinbusiness says:

    time for Maine’s 2nd HR.

  163. MainStMets says:

thats how u help yourself out, for those of you with only gamecast, that was a laser off the bat of maine HAHAHA

  164. zen says:

    willie-ball!

  165. gipper91375 says:

    LOL Maine man!!!!!

  166. CitizenSnips says:

    MAINE!

  167. jay15 says:

Would somebody who is watching the game know how Maine’s pitch count is? I know it’s early but assuming he doesn’t have a meltdown inning where he throws 30 pitches, is there a chance he might be able to go 7?

  168. MainStMets says:

im a teacher so 4pm wouldnt hurt too too badly :)

    • gipper91375 says:

Yep. I recently moved cities on the W coast and am looking for a new job…so the 4pm starts are pretty cool. Can watch game while job hunting online and cooking dinner for my g/f…then we have the whole night free.

  169. PacmanJones says:

    It’s at 44.

  170. MainStMets says:

7 runs w/ some back ups playing, huge diff in number of guys left on base, something like 5 of 8 have scored

get penny a bucket hes throwing up!

    • Nate W. says:

Its amazing what having a few guys who care in the lineup can do to an offense. ;)

These guys that dont have their position gift wrapped for them seem to do what it takes to perform when they get a chance.

  171. TBlz says:

    Penny = hungry

  172. ABQMetsFan says:

did reyes walk again or am i watching a replay?

  173. Nate W. says:

Scott Procter warming up, Dodgers stalling for time now.

  174. TBlz says:

Isn’t amazing how much easier it is to listen to Scully when you’re up by 7?

  175. mr.gee21 says:

WOW we have seriously needed a game like this…

  176. gipper91375 says:

The announcers for teams like the Nats, Fish and D’bags should be forced to watch several hundred game tapes of SNY and Vin Scully broadcasts…so they can see how it should be done.

    • dcmetsfan says:

Totally with you there. I have the Extra Innings package, and those two crews (well, Scully is really just a one man crew) are far and away the best. After them, the only halfway decent crews are NESN (Sox) and Milwaukee. It’s amzing how bad most announcing teams are.

  177. jamesi11 says:

Not to be a pecsimist…because im not. And im currently loving this.

But imagine ho much better this would be if Wright was hitting like we all know he can (and eventually will again)

Just some food for thought for all you people who are always negative and say this team doesnt have it.

    • ABQMetsFan says:

This is just one game. A very good game, but it doesn’t mean that our problems are over.

With that said, nice double there DW! I hope this the the end of the mediocrity.

  178. AlouIsNasty says:

The Mets only swung and missed 7 times on 119 pitches according to Vin Scully

  179. sheahey81 says:

    Wha happened to PAGAN?

    He’s out of the game I hear…

  180. Nate W. says:

Castillo bummed some peanuts off a fan in the front row while waiting for Procter to warm up. Gotta love it.

  181. TBlz says:

This is Dubs chance. Slumpbuster coming!

  182. jay15 says:

Of course we have an off day tomorrow though. I wish we could have found a way to carry the momentum from a game like this

  183. Nate W. says:

Proctor letting in Penny’s runs, always good for team morale…

  184. npanzeca says:

    All right David!!

  185. zen says:

    willie-ball is back!

    let’s go mets!

  186. cafuq says:

hopefully maine will be sharp after this long inning

  187. huge_mets_fan11 says:

There you go Wright, every player in the lineup has a hit

  188. dykstraw says:

DAMN YOU GROUND RULE DOUBLE, AGAIN!

  189. ryno says:

    Hooray for a laugher!

Lets enter little league mode and get everyone in…

Enjoy the flight back east, boys.

  190. MainStMets says:

heres our most recent laugher, 10 spot for maine, let him go the distance

    nice shot by wright

last nights in ability to gettin runners in from 2nd, paired w todays ability to do so means were gonna balance it out more or less

batted around 2x this game, very nice

  191. TBlz says:

This reminds me a game I watched recently…last Wednesday, maybe??

  192. PacmanJones says:

With the game starting at 3, I never thought I’d leave work at 5 and be home to see Maine still on the mound. Gotta love it.

… Of course Willie will pull him at 75 and let Shownweiss go 3 innings. Had to throw that in there.

  193. Gasface77 says:

Mets 3 - 3 on the road against two of the hottest teams in baseball and facing some tough pitchers (Webb, Haren, Penny, Owings, etc.)

    Just saying…

    • ABQMetsFan says:

should have won last night’s game

    • TBlz says:

It’s not results alone that is killing the fans. Its the difference between expectations and results, and the lack of emotion that we see as a consequence. We want them to be “professionals”, but we also want David to snap a bat over his knee after going 0-10 instead of looking at the scoreboard to see how he looked whiffing. We want them to feel the same anguish and embarassment that we do, and they probably do, except you and I can throw some isht against the wall when we are pissed and they haev to “keep it together”.

      • blains2000 says:

But David has been throwing his bat and helmet recently. So has Reyes and Delgado. They may in fact be trying too hard. I’m not saying becuase of the booing.

The players remember what happend last year too. They are probably a little edgy just like the fans.

  194. Nate W. says:

Wright with a 2 out rbi hit, nice to have him join the party.

  195. Mets Fan on Wall St. says:

The Mets looked up at the scoreboard and saw the Reds won 9-0, they decided they’ll need some practice to take them on this weekend.

As frustrating as last night’s game was, one positive sign was they were at least getting guys on base. Yes they left a ton stranded, but that’s more encouraging than seeing no baserunners at all.

  196. Roach2 says:

Well, this team surely is playing with some fire and passion…and they’re playing like they care…

Willie has an approval rating of 85%

Sounds about right for a regular win, right?

  197. ABQMetsFan says:

another good thing about last inning was all runs were scored with 2 outs. that’s clutch

  198. mex84 says:

Who are these guys and what did they do with my Mets!

  199. gipper91375 says:

Scully, talking about Maine and Game 6 of th e06 LCS….

“Six times that has happened where a team facing elimination in a game six started a rookie. All six times, the rookie was victorious.”

  200. huge_mets_fan11 says:

Give the game ball Angel Pagan because I truely believe that his great catch got this team going.

Of course Maine will probably have a long inning here and have to come out after 6 innings.

  201. npanzeca says:

Come on John, keep your focus!

  202. ABQMetsFan says:

Screw you Dewitt! Good to see that idiot strikeout.

  203. I_Need_More_Cowbell_Please says:

    last inning took too long.

  204. giuseppe franco_procede says:

Where has this team been the last 31 games? Let’s hope this is the momentum the team desperately needed. LET’S GO METS!

  205. huge_mets_fan11 says:

YES!! That a way Maine and smart play by Castillo

  206. ccmetfan says:

Just got back from the doctor’s, hoping that the Mets are winnning, turn on the tv and I see 11-0. Just made my day.LETS GO METS!!We should’ve done this in last night’s game too!

  207. ABQMetsFan says:

They are playing like millionaire superstars who know how to win.

  208. zen says:

the power of christ compels you!

  209. TBlz says:

Hope Church stays hot once everybody starts hitting.

  210. MainStMets says:

im willing to bet that church doubles up milledges stats at seasons end….get nicked in last at bat, blast a shot to right next at bat

    thats right willie-”no let up”

  211. gipper91375 says:

    Baker’s dozen, or bust!

  212. MainStMets says:

great snag by the fan w the kid!

  213. TBlz says:

Glad Willie isnt pulling John on principle.

  214. mex84 says:

Did everyone else on the site vote for Church to play in the all-star game?

  215. Nate W. says:

who are the Dodgers playing next? The Mets are beating up their pen for the last two days for the benefit of whoever it is to abuse for the next three days.

and the Mets only get one win out of it.

  216. blains2000 says:

Woah! Save some for the weekend fellas! But it is nice to see.

  217. ravi3 says:

    Whats Maine’s pitch count?

  218. Nate W. says:

ooh, bring on Chan Ho Park, we want 20 today!

How many (former) starters do the Dodgers have on their staff? seems like 7 or 8.

    • MetLifer says:

Didn’t Park go back to Korea?

BTW, did anyone notice ESPN Gameday never updates the player pics? Park is still wearing a Mets cap.. LOL

It’s funny how the Mets can rake a good pitcher, but do nothing against a crappy pitcher.

  219. wallybackman'sfire says:

Penny was trying to Nickel and Dime the Mets today.

  220. huge_mets_fan11 says:

    Maine is at 79

  221. huge_mets_fan11 says:

Wow, Chan Ho Park has one save

  222. the Straw says:

To anyone who believes Oliver Perez is as good as or better than John Maine,

I submit this game as Exhibit A through Z.

OP is no where near the pitcher Maine is.

Is there a reason Omar hasnt locked Maine up through 2020?!?!?!?

    • blains2000 says:

Actually his last game was an even better example IMO. He had a bunch of chances to just throw in the towel like Ollie does but he didn’t. He battled, got a nice little rhythm and kept his team in the game.

    • Nate W. says:

yea, lets use Maine’s best game as his example, not his 4 IP, 100 pitch outings…

He’s been a few notches better than Perez this year, but he has been inconsistent as well.

The curveball (loopy slider as Gary Cohen calls it) has been a better out pitch for Maine his last two outings, so I hope to see that more in the future. Makes his miriad of slightly breaking pitches much more dangerous.

    • Deaner says:

      exactly

      a better “pitcher”

ollie probably has better raw talent, but maine is the better “pitcher” of the two

i think maine has gotten better each start this year. hopefully he can make this a consistent effort.

  223. the Straw says:

No doubt. Maine has been great all year. Hes not had his best stuff, but still battled and gave quality outings. And maybe its the warm weather, but I think Maine is starting to really get going…
    Maine for Cy Young

  224. AlouIsNasty says:

It’s official, the Mets can not get hits of pitchers of Asian decent.

  225. the Straw says:

Nate–dont make up numbers…where is this 4 inning 100 pitch game? His only bad game this year was his 1st start….coming off a full week of rest, not his usual.

A tad better than Perez….you need to get your head checked.

    • twassel says:

For the record, on 4/5 he threw 100 pitches in 4 innings in a loss to the Braves. on 4/26 he threw 100 pitches in 5 innings in a win over the Braves. Just facts.

    • Nate W. says:

you either need to pay attention more, or get higher standards for your starting pitchers…

  226. huge_mets_fan11 says:

    85 pitches so far

  227. I_Need_More_Cowbell_Please says:

    there’s your 7+ innings starter!!!

  228. HoJoWright says:

MVP of west coast trip = Johnny Maine

  229. eligoodrich says:

whats nice is being able to read the comments posted after the 4th inning. Im losing all interest in this site, well the comments not the articles because of the bashing and hating. Like honestly do these kids think they sound intelligent making random fire willie comments.just glad there arnt too many fire omar chants yet.

    • Nate W. says:

Its one guy making a ton of fire Willie posts. You dont have to read the comments, its part of what I like about this place. Sometimes I just hit the main page when I dont want to deal with all the sunshineyness that overruns this place when things are going well…

  230. anthony.velli says:

Maine is over-rated. guy is the best pitcher in spring training and people think he’s gonna win the cy young. perez had exact same numbers as maine last year and he didnt give up a run his first 3 outings. he had one terrible outing this year, but other than that has not been the bust all you mike & the mad dog disciples are making him out to be. today i noticed the fan confidence rating was 5.5. i can’t wait till it jumps back up to 7.5 after one blow out win.

  231. eligoodrich says:

or it jumped down to 5.5 after 1 blowout loss

  232. Nate W. says:

A pig just flew by my window…

  233. I_Need_More_Cowbell_Please says:

I know i sound like I’m riding on the Maine-train now cuz we are winning this game, but I love Maine ever since Game6 of the NLCS. Then the first half of 07 and the second to last game of last season further proved my point.

  234. eligoodrich says:

and for maine is over-rated. where do you see maine being talked about besides right here. and he also was pitching like a cy young winner last eyar before the all-star break. Perez might have nastier stuff ,but Maine is far smarter and will be a met for a long time hopefully.Maine is the man!!!

  235. anthony.velli says:

it’s a moot point weather the blow out loss or blow out win caused the fan’s opinion change. one game among 162, no matter how badly it is lost or won, should not so drastically effect anyone’s opinion of the overall direction of the mets. if you thought the mets werent gonna make the playoffs before today and today’s events changed your mind you should feel silly.

    • gipper91375 says:

The approval went down 1.5 points since last week. 7.0 to 5.5.

      Hardly a violent turn.

Frankly, the question Matt uses is hard to go very low on as far as a rating, since the query includes the new network and stadium, etc as factors in your analysis.

Personally, my rating hasn’t changed on that question this season. Six. It would vascillate between 3-5 if only for the play of the team…but the new stadium, the new network, and the owners spending more willingly than before pumps it up to six.

  236. ccmetfan says:

Complete game by John Maine., just watch

  237. huge_mets_fan11 says:

Maine should be able to go the distance

  238. mex84 says:

Willie has to let him go 9, his pitch count is below 100. Lets go Maine!

    • Nate W. says:

Hopefully if someone gets on base they dont yank him right away, ala Torre.

This is what pitchers have to do to make it obvious to the manager that they dont need to go to the pen. Its not just Willie, its all across mlb.

  239. anthony.velli says:

i love watchin Penny get beat. that guy’s such a punk.

  240. Nate W. says:

wow, note the date. Gary Cohen’s memory was off.

He said Maine threw a complete game in his last start last year.

  241. twassel says:

    Maine’s going for the CG.

  242. gomets6091 says:

ugh….I’m writing a damn paper so I turned my internet off for a few hours, completely forgot to start Maine on my fantasy team (but don’t worry, I had Penny and his 10 ER in there). Kill me.

On a related note, HOLY HECK, this is what last night should have been! 12 runs, only 6 runners stranded. Not too shabby. This is the kind of win they’ve been needing for a long time. Now hopefully whoever is pitching tomorrow doesn’t come out and give up 7 runs before getting an out like the last time the Mets won a blowout with Maine pitching a shutout…

    • Nate W. says:

good to see you are concentrating on your work, the Mets are off tomorrow. :)

  243. anthony.velli says:

how come i set aside time to watch yesterday’s crap performance till 1am, but maine tosses a gem and the bats wake up while i’m at work.

  244. mex84 says:

    I hate Andrew Jones.

  245. Nate W. says:

Maine up to 105 pitches… he’s just giving them a reason to pull him if he gets over 110…

  246. blains2000 says:

With apologies to Regis. There’s Red Sox nation and Yankee universe. We should be RollerCoaste nation.

    • blains2000 says:

of course I meant - RollerCoaster nation - damn

    • anthony.velli says:

this is annoying. i think willie has all of the Mets starters on his fantasy team and he refuses to risk their ERAs.

  247. ABQMetsFan says:

Andruw Jones is a human puss bag

  248. twassel says:

Nice outing, Maine. You came through when we needed it.

  249. ccmetfan says:

I can finally enjoy Mets Post Game Live

  250. MeesesGlokmah says:

Rats, I missed the game because of school and work. It appears that my Maine man dominated the Dodgers today. Yay!

  251. D-Day says:

man talk about feast or famin with this team! no that im complaining, good to see what this team is capable of when there alll on the same page!! now a little consistency and a few wins strung together and were in business! good win today, lost the series but good for the mentality of this team! LETS GO METS!!!!

  252. D-Day says:

hey anyone else know that maine has won his last 3 starts and they all came after mets loses. i guess hes become our stopper now as much as johan! way to go maine man!

  253. IsiahRandolph says:

johan is our stopper, that much is clear. but we need maine to step up and give us more strong outings like this. our rotation hasnt been giving us much in terms of innings, but a lot of that goes on the shoulders of the offense. maine was really aggressive today and didnt hesitate to put the ball in play since he knew he was nursing a 4, 5, 11, and eventually a 12 run lead. in 2006, we scored a lot of 1st inning runs- we need to get back to that, and were going to need jose to step up his game a notch. this will let our pitchers relax and be more aggressive

  254. BBmetsfreak36 says:

yep w/ all these pessimstic met fans u can say w/e u want but dont denie that the bats are heating up for ovious reasons(alou) and delgado is getting his swing. IM not worried about anybody else really. Castillo will come around. with the little fondation of macanics he has it shouldnt be too long for him either. Once pedro’s back we can keep figgy in #5 and let pelf find himself until well idk what happens with el dudge. And no matter what has happened….the bullpen IS solid.

  255. grotesmask says:

Most dominating game of the season for Mets! First statement-type game. Please make it the shape of things to come!!!

    • IsiahRandolph says:

weve had statement games this year- beating smoltz, hudson, hamels, and haren. the mets have gotten really unlucky with the draws they get. i feel like we always catch a teams ace and atlanta misses them. trust me, someone should look at the braves schedule and see how often they got a teams 3-4-5
