Read: El Duque’s Boot is Off
By Matthew Cerrone - May 7, 2008 4:05 pm

According to Adam Rubin, at his blog for the Daily News, Orlando Hernandez has taken off the protective boot and has been cleared to do light throwing and jogging, “though his bunion remains.”

yipee…the thing is, this just makes me wonder how much closer we are to his next bizarre injury, and what will it be…

Is this a guy from the minors or something?

i dont think i’ve ever heard of him…hopefully he can be the reliable young sparkplug that this team needs

  2. BIG17EASY says:

My guess on his next injury is a bruised coccyx.

  3. giuseppe franco_procede says:

El Duques next injury will be a paper cut!

  4. Dave Magadan says:

How does this really help us? It just gives Willie more ammo to screw things up with.

  5. BlueTrane says:

I REALLY wish he would just go away…

  6. Anthony De Rosa says:

My money is on the sciatica or ‘whiskey leg’ as the next Duque ailment.

  7. Danny1986 says:

Now don’t do anything sudden and illogical, El Duque…..like putting that boot up for sale on EBAY.

  8. Slob says:

Isn’t there another boot under that boot?

  9. jedimynd says:

Next on House – “House seems perpelexed that actual spider webs grows inside pitcher’s arm as the team scurries to find the symptoms of elduquechronia.”

  10. Blue_n_Orange says:

JUST LOSE THE BUNION ALREADY!!!! We all know you won’t be back for months anyway!

  11. kevinmets31 says:

who cares anymore this guy’s bound to get hurt somehow…in fact tonight my prediction is that he hurts his pinky finger flipping through channels from his sofa

  12. Dave Magadan says:

Can we please just ask Alou to pee on his bunions so they’re not a problem anymore.

  13. metsfan42793 says:

wait a second. orlando hernandez is still on the Mets? i forgot he was even on the mets.

    • metsftw says:

did you really? or are you just using hyperbole to express the fact that duque has been hurt all year?

  14. ToastyJoe says:

Other potential El Duque injuries: dropsy, the grip, scrofula, the vapors, jungle rot, dandy fever, poor man’s gout, housemaid’s knee, climatic boo-bow, the staggers, dum dum fever.

OK, I stole those from Abe Simpson.

I’m still waiting for when he misses a game due to ‘Massive Diarrhea’.

    Who?

  17. I work in the IT dept of a hospital and one of my friends is surgeon. According to him, a bunion requires surgery to be removed. Have the Mets been given a reason he didn’t have surgery in the off season to remove it???

    • Constnza81V2.0 says:

I’ve heard on multiple occassions that it could take El Duque “years” to recover from bunion surgery. Given that this is his last year anyway, might as well play through pain or not play at all.

Hey. I read on ESPN.com “Insider” that Buster Olney is reporting that the Mets are interested in Brewers’ reliever Derrick Turnbow if he would be interested in a minor league contract.

I then went on the Brewers blogs and found some pretty interesting thoughts on NY fans and media. Pretty much the common thread is that if Turnbow thought that the Brewers fans were tough, just wait till he gets to NY! Their feeling is that NY is no place to go if you’re a struggling ball player (especially one with talent) and a fragile ego to boot. The fans and media here are like vultures and prey on players like that. Not an unfair point. E.g. Ed Whitson.

In any event, I wouldn’t be opposed to a minor league deal for Turnbow. Let’s see if he can straighten himself out.

    • dontstopbelieving says:

In general, I’m not opposed to minor league contracts, as they are generally no-lose situations.

Here, though, I would stay far, far away. Turnbow is a “stuff” guy – AKA a guy Omar loves (see: Burgos, Sosa, Mota). I could easily see him ripping through AAA. Sadly, though, he has gotten plenty of chances with the Brewers and has been just awful. He’s got bad control, gives up homers — exactly what you don’t want out of a reliever. But I’d see Willie/Omar continuing to give him the ball because he’s closed games before. (Remember Shingo Takatsu? Gah.)

I would rather see a guy like Muniz – who has actually demonstrated an ability to get hitters out – than a roll of the dice like Turnbow.

Will get hurt on a collision with Alou during warmups.

  20. IsiahRandolph says:

any word on when pedro will return?

  21. HITorDIE25 says:

El doche sucks…everyone should get over him. He’ll be ready in mid-august to come out of the bullpen. Get better socks and clean your foot…

  22. Mookie 1986 says:

Last I heard he was just about ready to make his first minor league start when suddenly he came down with a rare strain of smallpox.

  23. wallybackman'sfire says:

El Duque should just buy some Gels…. And then he could be gelling like there’s no telling (on the pitcher’s mound….) or in his boot.

THE PREVIOUS WAS NOT A PAID ADVERTISEMENT OR ENDORSEMENT OF ANY KIND

    • JarvisJanesAddiction says:

Ain’t no tellin’ if he’ll ever be gelin’……………
I hate to see you go, Orlando……but when they remove the boot…..they should give him the boot………

  24. I love El Duque jokes.

    • cape mets says:

They’re gonna make a movie about El Duque’s life. It’s gonna be called “Das Boot”.

  25. Felonious Monk says:

It just kills me how Omar lets guys like Gotay walk for nothing, but desperately holds on to El Duque, who has been overall mediocre in his tenure with the Mets during the few weeks he hasn’t been on the DL. They don’t need El Duque right now. They need to instead start thinking about long-term solutions for the starting rotation and getting some of the guys in AAA to take it to the next level.

    • In defense of the Duke, he has had some really good quality starts since we traded for him in the beginning of the 2006 season. Getting hurt 48 hours before game one of the NLDS vs. Dodgers was the first step, and then his erratic starts in 2007, and then the whole bunion/foot/been-in-a-boot-for-almost-6 months thing really just made the former WS MVP into a complete joke.

  26. KevnCt says:

    laughin out loud here!

  27. cape mets says:

Sandpaper has been shown to be effective in removing bunyons.

Are bunyons anything like Funyons? ‘Cause I love Funyons! Very salty!
