RHP Scott Moviel has begun to break out of his early season struggles, winning for the second time in as many starts. The tall right hander allowed two runs on four hits and three walks in five innings, striking out five.
After seeing his average drop to .200 on April 18th, C Francisco Pena has absolutely scorched the baseball, hitting safely in 17 of 18 games. After going 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored and three driven in, the 18-year old catcher has his average up to .297. Fellow Dominican, 2B Greg Veloz, was 2-for-5 with a run scored. 23-year old OF Casey Craig raised his average to .579 in his first five games for Savannah after going 2-for-4 with a walk, a double and two runs scored.
Over at Metsgeek, Jeff Mathews analyzes Mike Pelfrey‘s performance this season using a variety of statistics, including the very impressive use of Pitch-F/X data.
Based on the data Mathews believes Pelfrey should try pitching backwards, writing:
“Right now, Pelfrey is throwing a first-pitch fastball more than 80% of the time. Instead, maybe he should try to get ahead of the hitters with a get-me-over slider, and then finish the ‘em off with that moving fastball. I mean, why not? Whatever he’s doing now isn’t working, so why not try something different?”
…i’ve followed pelfrey’s career since he was drafted by the Mets and i’m still unsure why he abandoned his curve ball that he used successfully in college and his early stint in the Mets minor league system…
…that being said, i feel the same way about pelfrey as I do with Oliver Perez, i have no idea what to expect from start-to-start…
..it is interesting to note, pelfrey is 2-0 with a 1.50 era with Brian Schneider behind the plate, as opposed to 0-2 with a 8.34 era without schneider…so, with schneider back i’ll be curious to see how he pitches in his next start…

Number four on the list is the 1986 New York Mets, of which he writes:
“It’s a rare group of non-felons that can inspire a book titled The Bad Guys Won!…Shea’s clubhouse served as breeding ground for scumbags-in-training like Kevin Mitchell and Lenny Dykstra.”
….hmm, larry eh…i know that’s you chipper…
…as for the label “scumbags”, i couldn’t have been more proud of a group of bad guys then i was of them…

Braves 1B Mark Teixeira is able to be a free agent after this season.
According to Jon Heyman on SI.com, citing ‘sources,’ the 28–year-old Teixeira and his agent, Scott Boras, could be seeking a ten-year, $200 million deal.
Teixeira, who has 174 career home runs in 779 games, is hitting .254 this season following a 5–for-32 start.
In the report, Heyman writes, “Jeff Wilpon is said to have been a Teixeira admirer for years,” while listing the Mets at 4 to 1 odds of signing the first baseman.
Ultimately, Heyman believes that the Yankees are most likely to sign Teixeira, with the Mets next in line, followed by the Orioles, Mariners, Braves, Red Sox and Giants.
…well, i am sure it will make Scott Boras more than happy to wrangle in both new york teams…
Speaking of first baseman, according to Jamey Newberg of the Newberg Report, Rangers 1B Jason Botts has cleared waivers and will return to the team’s farm system.
Today is John Maine’s 27th birthday,
and Church of the Fonz has baked him a cake.
Speaking of Maine, he is still the team’s second-best starting pitcher, according to Joel Sherman and his blog for the New York Post.
Meanwhile, at Faith and Fear in Flushing, Jason writes a letter to Fred and Jeff Wilpon suggesting they begin looking for Willie Randolph’s replacement, such as Larry Bowa, Wally Backman or Bobby Valentine.
…bowa…seriously…has it really come to that…yikes…
Brady Clark chose to accept an assignment to Triple-A New Orleans, instead of retiring, a decision that his family supported, explains Bob Furtos in the Times-Picayune.
According Gene Duffey, at MLB.com, Nationals manager Manny Acta is committed to playing Lastings Milledge in center field.
Lastly, Ed Ryan at Mets Fever explains why Marlon Anderson should be starting at first base over Carlos Delgado.
