Phillips wasn’t great, but he did make some good deals. Trading Todd Hundley for Armando Benitez and Roger Cedeno was a very good move. Trading Cedeno and Dotel for Mike Hampton was very good. Letting Hampton walk to draft David Wright was very good.

On the other hand, Billy Taylor, Mel Rojas, Kevin Appier, not so good.

    • itsmetsforme says:

“letting Mike Hampton walk to draft David Wright” So you’re saying he knew that Hampton’s pick would get Wright? Just clarifying.

      • domosnacks5 says:

Yes, he’s saying that, because it did. The compensatory pick we got for Hampton signing with Colorado was the sandwich pick between the first and second that year which we drafted one David Wright.

        • mrose says:

domosnacks5, I think most of the message board knows that fact by now, but itsmetsforme was just trying to sarcastically state that there is NO way possible that Steve Phillips KNEW DWright would be there and obviously couldn’t see the future on him. It could just as well turned out that hampton had multiple cy young seasons and our draft pick for him was terrible…

  2. pvhornet05 says:

    He also signed Reyes.

    • Metdamage says:

No he didn’t. Scout Eddy Toledo “discovered” Reyes and told Omar Minaya, who at that time was the Head of International Scouting, Minaya told Asst. GM Jim Duquette.

There is a story that the Cubs were going to sign Reyes when Toledo told the Cubs that Duquette passed on him.
Once the Cubs got into the mix, Jim Duquette signed Reyes right after his 16th birthday.

Steve Phillips had no input on Reyes and viewed Met prospects as assets for trades. Phillips was never into scouting and development.

  3. D in Ben Lomond says:

Yeah, And almost traded Reyes for Larkin and Wright for Cruz Jr.! The fool was in love with the aged.

    • ravi3 says:

Didn’t know about Larkin, but Phillips DID offer him in the Alomar deal, but Cleveland opted for Escobar instead…Of course its hard to kill him on that one, because nobody forsaw Alomars steeeeeeeep decline.

  4. Wright88 says:

His suggestions are just so stupid…nothing else to say. Dunn for Lind and Marcum?! Griffey for Quentin or Crede?!

  5. NickA33 says:

I just threw up in my mouth a lil bit…

    • KinersKornerman says:

Too many people on this site throw up in their mouths too often. Can we go for more varied forms of negative reaction, like “fell off my chair” or “dropped my chalupa”? Just a thought.

  6. MetsFan21 says:

So Steve Phillips is an asinine GM… and those “trades” if we can call it - you can definitely make them in MLB Baseball 2008. So now, where does that leave Jim Duquette - who must have been stupidly drunk on tequila shots and vodka to trade Scott Kazmir for someone not named Carlos Zambrano.

  7. metterman says:

Eveytime i see steve phillips on baseball tonight i curl up into the fetal position and whimper under my bed. oooo the nightmares.

  8. Dafatone80 says:

Steve Phillips has the right idea. Kind of. Sort of. Not really.

The Reds should look to unload a few players. They have some great young talent, but they’re not a good team quite yet. Phillips is an idiot (of course) for thinking that you trade your aging veterans for budding superstars. You trade them for prospects. Actual minor league prospects. Or you hold onto them and let them walk in walk years, gaining sandwich compensation picks while your team’s fans complain that you’re getting nothing for them. Either way works.

Anyway, they should trade Dunn, to us, for Jorge Sosa. Anyone object?

Also, they should’ve gotten rid of Aaron Harang a while ago. The guy is GREAT. Absolute #1 ace great. He’s 1-5.

    8 starts, 55.1 innings, that’s just under 7 a start. 47 k’s, era 3.09, whip 1.10, terrible pitcher’s park. Can we have him?

And yes, that Sosa Dunn trade is a joke.

  9. rogasm says:

For the record, I am NOT a Steve Phillips fan, however he has been to more World Series’ than Omar. Come on Omar! You’re better than that. LETS GO METS!!!

  10. therealsince86 says:

Funny but I can’t seem to post about KGJR.

  11. therealsince86 says:

Next person to read this try and post the last name of the Red closing in on 600 HR.

  12. krumbledkookie says:

Phillips is dumb but the Mets should try to get Affeldt away from the Reds, to fill Sosa’s shoes.

  13. kevinmets31 says:

“Phillips thinks Steinbrenner is a raging moron who smokes PCP dipped in embalming fluid.” that comment gave me a good laugh

  14. miker94 says:

as i read this article, the look on my face resembled that of the aflac duck after yogi made those comments in the barber shop.

  15. metjim says:

LOL, it’s funny how many people think Phillips traded Kazmir.
