Links: Q Ratings, Heilman, Hogwash and Wagner
By Matthew Cerrone - May 9, 2008 7:23 am

In a clever post to Brooklyn Met Fan, Adam dishes out Q Ratings for the entire Mets roster, such as a High Rating for the Wilpons, a Very Low Rating for Carlos Delgado and Very, Very Low Rating for Willie Randolph.

Meanwhile, in a report for Newsday, David Lennon takes a closer look at Aaron Heilman and his road back to being the eighth-inning set-up guy.

At SNY.tv, Ted Berg lists a series of concerns that don’t concern him, and says, “Hogwash,” to the idea that Carlos Beltran is too patient.

According to Steve Popper of the Bergen Record, Billy Wagner is an open book, much to the dismay of the Mets.

…i actually don’t believe this…i mean, if the Mets were truly afraid of wagner’s mouth, why would they allow him to appear regularly every week on ESPN 1050, as well as take part in Steve Serby’s Q&A last week in the New York Post…i realize such appearances are often negotiated through the player and his agent, but the Mets protect their players very well, and if they didn’t want wagner talking to these outlets, wagner wouldn’t be talking to these outlets…sure, they are probably not happy when he rips Oliver Perez, but, it’s not like billy’s candor is suddenly a surprise to people…

The Mets knew what they were getting when signing Wagner. And it’s not like they are just figuring this out in Wagner’s third year with the team.

Q ratings have nothing to do with being positively or negatively thought of, they’re just how recognizable you are.

  3. Metlomaniac says:

Jova beat me to the punch. If the Wilpon’s were truly surprised by Wagner’s outspokeness, their “Q rating” should be lower than GWB.

  4. Bobby Bones in SC says:

I’m surprised all of the rating are not much worse. I’ve tried to stay quiet and positive, but inside I am boiling at the ineffectivness of the Mets this year.

Leave Wright out of the equation and just say he is playing well enough. Then look at Reyes, Castillo, Beltran and Delgado. Combined they are batting .233. No real pop. Slugging percentage and RBI’s look horrible.

Conversely look at Church, Schnieder, Casanova, and Pagan. These guys have carried the team this year and are combined batting .304. More runs, hits, HR’s and RBI’s than the above mentioned players when you look at averages per AB. All I can say is thank God for the new guys and fill-ins.

I’m not sure who is to blame or if I should just be mad as hell at each of the players. These guys make boat loads of money because they are proven entities. Are they expected to perform? YES. When you make that much, to bad , so sad. You better step up and get the job done. It is always easier to blame Willie or Omar, and I’m not their biggest fan, but I really think the players need to get with the program.

I don’t really give a crap if they have special hand shakes or not. Whether they get along, or question Willie. Or whether or not Wagner says something crazy. They’ve got a job to do. GO GET IT DONE.

Delgado I’ll cut some slack because I think the end of the road may be near and it is not his fault they signed him to too many years.

Beltran though. A career .275 hitter with big RBI production looks terrible. Reyes batted .300 two years ago, and .280 last year while finishing horrible. He is so inconsistent this year he looks like someone suffering from some sort of bipolar problem. Castillo, a lifetime .300 hitter has never had pop, but always productive. He doesn’t look good either.

I don’t even want to get into the salary comparison.

Bottom line…If these guys were producing just close to normal then the team would be in first place probably 3-5 games up.

Now, I know people are going to think, well it is still early. I’m not so sure. My Opinion: The season is 20% over. Time to get with the program.

I couldn’t agree more Bobby Bones. It is TIME NOW for Beltran, Delgado and Reyes to step up and get going. Massive contracts and no production is a disgrace. We will get beaten badly by the teams that are showing more heart and desire like the Phillies and the Braves if we don’t get going now. We cannot be a .500 team in July or we will be over 10 games out in the division. If Willie is going to get dumped, it must be by June 1st. Hopefully the high priced duds will wake up now and give us a good run in 2008 but I have no faith in these underachievers…

What exactly is our record vs. the Phillies and Braves and the rest of the NL East?>

        • Jova1931 says:

          Mets:
          vs. Phillies: 4-2
          vs. Nationals: 4-1
          vs. Marlins: 2-1
          vs. Braves: 2-3

          Overall: 12-7

        • iamatwork says:

Based on his comments we’re clearly 2-47 this season. Relax, it’s a long one. Beltran will have an insanely good 3 week stretch soon enough.

          Believe.

    • Jova1931 says:

The Mets never signed Delgado, they traded for him. The Marlins backloaded his contract so that if they could not afford him they could unload him. He’s actually looked a lot better the past few weeks.
Statistics and performance are two different things. The way the team has played has not been great – stats suggest that they are above .500, but still have not played to their capabilities.
Reyes & Beltran are not hitting well but Reyes has played relatively good defense, while Beltran has played great defense. Their offensive numbers will come around. I remember in ‘06 Reyes was hitting about .240 and went on a tear, eventually hitting .300. You have to give the players time. It’s incredible seeing the amount of negativity towards the team from it’s fan base. Mid-June is a good time to assess the team and make necessary adjustments.

      • therealsince86 says:

Exactly the fact that we are above .500 and our stars have not really been stars is actually a good thing. You have to expect that all of them except Delgado will get going and are just in a slump. Delgado may or may not be. Obviously you can’t expect Schnieder to continue to bat way above his career numbers but hopefully Castro will be back to help against LHP. In the long run if we are talented enough things will start to even out.

        • Jova1931 says:

Yeah, I really believe that. I really think it’s too early for US the fans to overreact. I think the team will do well, and the fact that we’ve played well against the NL East (no matter how mediocre) is a good sign. We were horrible within our division last year.

  5. Bobby Bones in SC says:

I’m not being negative towards the team. I just think several players need to start stepping it up.

Stats and performance do go hand in hand over time. The teams pitching has been in the top 10 in baseball which has kept the team winning enough to be over .500. However, their offense has been one of the worst, and ranks way down in almost every category.

I hope you are right that it is too early, but I also think it is overly optimistic to think these guys are going to turn it around and just start producing huge numbers. I know guys get off to slow starts, but right now the numbers on Castillo, Delgado and Beltran look very rough.

If Reyes bats .350 for the next 126 AB’s then he will pull his average up to .300. For Beltran if he batted .350 for a month plus then he pulls it up to .270. His average has dropped over the last 10 games.

Remember in the off season when everyone said the team needed another pitcher, that the Mets have the offense to contend with anyone. Well we went and got the pitching, but the offense doesn’t look like a contender after the first 32 games. Do you think anyone would have predicted we would be saying “thank you” to Church, Schnieder, Casanova, and Pagan?

  6. GregB says:

I wouldn’t surprise me to learn that the team is actually quite happy that Wagner is speaking out…he’s saying the things that they want to but can’t.
