Note: David Letterman is a Jinx
By Matthew Cerrone - May 9, 2008 10:42 am

In a report for the New York Post, Bart Hubbuch talks with David Wright about his recent slump.

Wright is hitting just .155 in his last 58 at bats.

Howard Johnson, on Wright, as quoted by Hubbuch:

“He’s just been over-swinging.  That’s going to happen in the course of a year.  We’ll keep making adjustments.  He’s going to get back to going off the way he used to do.  I’m convinced of that.”

Last season, Wright hit .244 in April with just six RBI, yet finished fourth in the MVP vote for the National League.

frankly, i am not at all concerned about wright…he’s in a rut…it happens…he’s always shown the ability to pull out of it and i am fairly certain he will do so againof all the things surrounding this team, he is the least of my worries…

For what it’s worth, prior to his appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman, Wright was hitting .311.

Since Letterman, Wright is hitting .259.

In 2006, Wright hit 20 home runs prior to an appearance on Letterman during the All-Star Break, after which he hit just six the rest of the season.

it’s official: letterman is a jinxalso, he’s a Yankees fan…

How worried are you about David Wright?

Wright is getting a steady diet of NOTHING because Carlos and Carlos couldn’t hit their way out of a paper bag. Why would Wright see any pitches to hit when pitchers can simply pitch around him. This is obviously causing him to get frustrated and he is trying to do too much. He is trying to pick up the slack for the rest of the slumpers and it is hurting his numbers. I am not worried at all about Wright. Once Carlos B comes around, everything will start to click in the lineup.

“Once Carlos B comes around, everything will start to click in the lineup.”

–Yea but how long are we going to have to wait for that to happen.

yeah, they’re feeding him nothing but breaking pitches on the outside corner, and he keeps swinging at them.

Its all connected, to start the season the order of Wright, Beltran and Delgado was ok. As it became apparent Delgado was in the same place as last year Beltran stopped getting pitches to hit and has gone down the drain. Now pitchers can attack/pitch around Wright and he is the one having a hard time now.

Church cant bat behind everyone, eventually someone else below Wright is going to have to start hitting for the lineup to work.

Anyone who voted “very worried” care to justify that?

The curse of Letterman, eh? If he didn’t go on that tear in Philly soon after the Letterman appearance I might be inclined to believe Letterman is working some kind of black magic lol.

Realistically Wright probably just needs to chill. You can’t get a hit everytime up.

Well considering what Wright did the beginning of last year and where he is now, Id say hes ahead of the game.

my thoughts exactly…Last April I was a bit worried. However, Wright has proven to be avery hard worker, and has made adjustments as the league adjusts to him. I’m sure by the time its all said and done, he’ll have a line of .310BA/30+HR/100+RBI

I agree. Wright is definitely over swinging and thus is a little behind some fastballs. That ground rule double he hit in LA looked good. During the course of a season slumps occur. It’s just a fact of the game. He’ll heat up in no time.

Concerned about Wright-no.
Concerned about the teams hitting collectively-YES.

Mets are 26th in the league in Homeruns and 23rd in the league in batting avg at .250.

Considering they are OVER .500, I guess we should feel lucky right now.

Because HRs are worth bonus points…
Batting avg and homeruns are stupid, here are some stats that matter:

8th in OBP
19th in Runs

And if you’re really concerned with HRs, then look at the real stat which is slugging %. We’re 21, not great but better.

Obviously not good in Runs and SLG, but if we weren’t getting on base then you should really be alarmed. If everyone was pressing and striking out then I’d be worried. Right now we’re putting runners on but not getting them in, as anyone who’s watched this season could tell you. Hits will come, and if we keep putting guys on we’ll score some runs.

right-o. eventually some of those hard hit balls that are going directly at fielders will fall in somewhere. And you nailed it: if no one was getting on base, that would be something to be worried about.

Also Beltran needs to take some pitches to left field. He is so strong he should be able to put balls in both gaps. He tops over way too many ground balls to second. I would love to see some of those pitches turn into line drives over short.

I really don’t see anything to be concerned about. But yeah, I agree that Beltran needs to pick up some slack to help him out.

Go to baseball-reference.com and look at Wright’s numbers over the last 365 days in his career splits. Sick! I am not worried at all. He hits a rut like everyone from time to time. Once the big bats start swinging we are gonna go on a nice run. Its the mark of a good team when your offensive studs are not clicking but the rest of the team is carrying them.

I’ll admit to being worried last year after his putrid April, but I’m a believer after his huge rebound the rest of the year. He’ll be fine.

Not overly, more accepting. Even hall of famers like Joe Morgan had some up and down years early in their career. He is still on the learning curve, once he figures it out he will string together some monster seasons!

Please, he’s on a pace for 140 RBI’s, he’s hitting 260, its a slump…a rough couple of weeks. Big deal, do we need a poll on everything? If you are worried about Wright, you must lead a very stressful anxious life. Many more pressing concerns with this team than David Wright

I am not concerned with Wright at all. The same goes for Beltran.

That being said, if you are one of the folks that is concerned about Beltran, then you also have to be concerned about DW. Beltran is walking alot more, where as it seems that DW is swinging at alot of pitches that he shouldn’t be. Especially that breaking stuff away.

Flip em. It worked for Mantle and Maris. Hit wright 4th. He’s a better contact hitter, and needs less protection than beltran, as seen when he was batting fifth behind delgado in 06. If beltran keeps getting on base at this clip, it will create a great deal more RBI opportunities for a very good clutch hitter
