Health: Castillo has Quad Discomfort
By Matthew Cerrone - May 11, 2008 4:25 pm

Luis Castillo left today’s game after the fifth inning with what the team called ‘left-quad discomfort.’

Awesome. This investment is going to be well worth it in three more years. Wait nevermind, I guarantee he is a bench player after this season. I just don’t understand the logic of Omar overpaying for Castillo the way he did, especially when it really didn’t seem like anyone besides the Astros were interested in him.

Can Binghamton 3B Dan MUrphy play 2nd base?????

        • Gina says:

I vaguely remember someone in her posting that none of them, Murphy, Evans or Carp are very good defensively. I might just be lumping Murphy in with the other two though.

    • harrychiti says:

Aren’t Castillo and Santana good friends after spending time together in Minny?

If that is the case, do you think that signing was maybe to entice Johan a little more? After all, the rumors at the time were that he pushed the deal a bit and wanting to come to Queens.

I’m not saying that the signing had a lot to do with it, but maybe inking Castillo had some other benefits for the organization.

      • AlreadyMissShea says:

I don’t buy that for one second. Where else was Johan going to go?

By the way, if the Yankees or Red Sox seriously wanted to deal for him, that’s where he’d be.

You know, when you make about $6,000 a pitch, you can make new friends just about anywhere you go.

In other news the sun is expected to rise tomorrow.

  3. AlreadyMissShea says:

Get well soon. Don’t rush back this time.

Starting to think Castillo is 30 in dog years. Im not sure he could steal on Mike Piazza anymore.

      • KinersKornerman says:

Dude, he has 7 steals this year. That’s second on the Mets and 10th in the NL.

Let’s do a little research before we go off.

anybody else here willing to trade this colorado announcer wayne hagin for a bag of balls yet? he makes jon miller sound exciting

    • AlreadyMissShea says:

I was listening to WFAN between the two games yesterday and heard one of his calls. Maybe it was Schneider’s HR? I thought it was one of the Reds announcers. He’s not a good fit here.

      • Necciai27 says:

Yes. Agreed. Hagin is very unprofessional. Now, you can get away with being unprofessional, but if you do that, you also have to be entertaining, memorable, and incisive when the need arises (I’m looking at you, Keith Hernandez….). But Hagin is NOT entertaining, NOT memorable, and NOT incisive. Also, while Keith Hernandez generally acts like your crazy neighbor or that one college roommate you had, Hagin is very robotic and unemotional. I say dump him. I almost wonder if Howie should just broadcast the games alone. He’s good enough for it, IMO. Because unfortunately, you’re probably not gonna get Eddie C. into the booth as much as we’d all like that. You could even try Kevin Burkhardt, in theory. He’s unpolished, but I think he’ll be a good broadcaster with some experience (remember folks, that was the knock on Gary Cohen when he first came here).

        • oldoobie says:

Matt should do a poll of Hagan’s popularity. I personally find him to sound like a machine. No heart just words

        • altru426 says:

Burkhardt called a AA game on SNY last year and I thought he did a good job. I think him and Howie Rose would be a great radio team.

        • KinersKornerman says:

Howie and Matt Cerrone. Now THERE’S a broadcast team.

    • SayItAintSo says:

      HE IS THE ABSOLUTE WORST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • gipper91375 says:

Hagin is the only blight on an otherwise excellent Mets broadcast team, both TV and radio.

        Hagin must go!!!

        • rd says:

Sounds unanimous…….. Seems like a nice guy, but not cutting it. After losing Bob Murphy and Gary, they need to do a better job finding a partner for Howie.

  5. stickguy says:

I hope that Omar bought the extended warranty when he got Castillo. He is going to really need it.

Assuming Castillo goes out for a period of time (at least a 15 day DL), what is the back up plan? Easley every day? Or do they call up one of the young guys from the minors (or do they have a veteran 2B down there?) to play for him?

It never seems that the Mets have a prospect ready for a try at the right positions (any positions?) when a starter goes down.

  6. dontstopbelieving says:

I’d love to see Marlon Anderson play 2B every day if Castillo is out (well, frankly, even if Castillo is healthy).

    • Nate W. says:

Its a good thing they are a bunch of fly ball pitchers, because a Delgado/Anderson side of the IF will be brutal at getting to balls.

  7. metsfansberealistic says:

    play Easley at 2nd

    bat Easley 2nd

    Castillo should be suffering

    left-out syndrome, not left-quad syndrome

very bad signing - cut your losses, Omar

  8. batsinthepelfrey says:

i have discomfort every time I realize we signed this slap-happy corpse to a quad-year contract

  9. Gilch says:

When talking about the lack of position player depth in the farm you people fail to realize over the last 4 years it has yielded david wright and jose reyes

  10. Hubie says:

Agree Dan, what a pathetic bunch of comments on Castillo. Its unfortunate but 25% of the Met fan base this years is a bunch of low lifes who are happy when one of our players get hurt. Don’t hate Castillo. Hate the contract Omar gave him.

    • andyglass1 says:

Absolutely agree, it is the contract we dislike, not the man. as soon as the deal was announced a collective groan eminated from NY. Guarantee when Omar is out of a job, the explanation will be, we had to go 4 years, in order to show Johan that he was truly in charge of the franchise. Louis either tells jokes that Johan really likes, or maybe he brings him late night snacks when the team is on the road…. Today’s extra base hit was great. it only the gappers could come more frequently; the rally killing squibs and rollers get to be really deflating.

  11. Hubie says:

Recall earlier in the year when people were posting how bad our record was when Castillo was batting 2nd. Well this week 3-0 this week with Luis batting 2nd and 0-3 when he was not!

    • batsinthepelfrey says:

note it also corresponded to alou coming back and being able to move church to 5, alou to 6 and delgado to 7 where he belongs. castillo doesn’t bring much to the table but the limited tools he brings are best utilized in the two hole.

  12. bvaz says:

yeah, I wish the negative fans would just stay away from shea and the comments section.

does anyone know if Matt Wise can play 2B?

  13. oldoobie says:

At times I believe that they are booing Randolph not the player. Still not cool but better for me to accept

  14. Castillo is a good #2 . …the Reds announcers love they guy….bottom line if hes out .. platton Marlon/ and Damon to the Pitching match ups (R/L) and put Church 2nd again

    Reyes
    Church
    Wright
    Beltran
    Alou
    Delgado
    Easley/Anderson
    Schneider
    P

    • metsfansberealistic says:

      that IS the lineup

but Ryan Church is too young for Willie

he needs an old guy in the 2 slot

  15. AlreadyMissShea says:

It’s amazing that people are still talking about this “booing problem” as Shea, considering the team is now 11-6 at home and seems to enjoy scoring plenty of runs now. It’s too bad that the whole thing was blown out of proportion from the beginning, to the point that people actually believed it was hurting the team at home.

If you only knew just how little booing has actually gone on there this year… Heilman and Delgado being the exception. And most of us have not booed even one player. Most of us have now once again stood by our team through the worst of times, and continue to support them unconditionally, and yet people still want to believe everything they hear from Mike and the Mad Dog, etc. It’s not your fault, but many of you have been misinformed.

    • AlreadyMissShea says:

      Edit:
It’s amazing that people are still talking about this “booing problem” AT Shea.

  16. Slob says:

    I have 4-year contract discomfort.

  17. KinersKornerman says:

Let’s go back to mid-November when your choices of avaiable 2B’s were Kaz Matsui, Tadahito Iguchi, David Eckstein, Mark Loretta, and Marcus Giles. Would you prefer any of that?

    • TurboDan says:

      Yeah, Eckstein.

      • KinersKornerman says:

Check their stats, bro. very comparable, except that Castillo walks more and is slightly younger.

        • Don Logan says:

Yea if we had Eckstein the same people who spend too much time on here crying about Castillo would be complaining about Eckstein’s arm. They’d all be saying their grandma throws the ball better than him.

        • Slob says:

And they’d be right. Anyone one who prefers Eckstein to Castillo is crazy. He might well be one of the most overrated players of all time.

    • AlreadyMissShea says:

I think most people wouldn’t have objected to Castillo for two years. Then again, I seriously doubt he will still be playing when the third year comes around. I mean, even people who love the guy have to admit his body is shot. But again, for most people, I think it’s the contract more than the player.

    • andyglass1 says:

did any one of those guys get a two year deal, a three year deal or a four year deal ? none of them netting anything close to $24.0m did they ? i think loretta gives you more offensively at least for this season. if luis can provide the good d, approach 25 steals, and approach 20 doubles then he will have been reasonably productive. we know he’s not going to drive in 50; 40 would be great.

      • AlreadyMissShea says:

Hey, it’s a bad contract. No question about that. I personally can’t stand the guy and won’t miss him one bit if he’s on the shelf for a while. All I’m saying is most people would not have objected to him getting two years, but the four makes almost everyone scratch their head even if they like him.

My opinion of Castillo is simple. I think he’s probably legitimately 36 years old, and whatever his age is, his body is old. And I don’t take anyone seriously when they tell me we should expect him to produce based on past experience. These are the same people who tell you 2007 is in the past and should be forgotten. Yet everyone is ready to break out the resumes for the Castillos of the world. Either the past is a good indicator of the future or it isn’t. It can’t be both.

  18. Gilch says:

stop the eckstien crap … when Luis is himself, there is no better hitter to hit behind Jose … takes a million pitches for Jose, always 0-2 but barely ever strikes out over his whole career. Can slap the ball through holes all over the infield started with hit and runs .etc.
NOW, thats when he’s right ….
And he’s not coming off a down year last year.
Everyone killing the 4 yr contract has to understand that its pratically a given your only getting 2 productive years at his age. Is his $ over the last 2 years of his deal really going to handcuff the mets in the free agent market? come on … they will either release him and eat the $ or use him as a bat/defensive upgrade late in games off the bench.
All the being said .. if hes going to be hitting in the 7 or 8 hole and not be the player we saw last year … then yes, Eckstien would have been a better choice…..
    and by the way
    ECKSTIEN .246 1HR 12RBI’s .315obp
so ..whatever … every team has holes .. and if luis is on the downside we are going to have a hole there.
At least he’s still an above average 2B in the field

  19. Gilch says:

i guess your right …. maybe im starting to think yankee fan mentality .. “overpay and over extend, who cares, we’ll worry about it later”

  20. AlreadyMissShea says:

Eckstein can stay far away from this team. Like I said, for most people, it’s the contract not the player. And while the Mets can release him in time, we know they are typically very stubborn about doing that when a guy has money coming to him. I think it’s more likely that Castillo just won’t be able to honor his end of the deal when the third year comes around.

    • KinersKornerman says:

I’m amanzing at all the accountant-fans who complain about the contract. I don’t believe anybody figures him to be starting past 2009, but let’s worry about 2008 now.

      • AlreadyMissShea says:

Well it is a bad contract. I already said I think it will be Castillo that will be unable to honor his end. But it is something that has a lot of people scratching their heads.

        • KinersKornerman says:

No doubt on the contract. But unless we know what the situation was when he was signed, like if Houston was offering 3 years, then the 4 years might make more sense. Unfortunately, we don’t have that information. In any case, he’s better than average for a 2B in 2008. The Castillo hatred seems over the top to me. Just an opinion.

        • AlreadyMissShea says:

Well I don’t hate him, but I’m not a fan of his by any means either. I meant it when I said get well soon. I don’t ever wish anyone to get hurt. And right now, we don’t have anyone who can do a better job anyway.

Having said that, if he decided to retire with a couple or three years left on the deal, I would wish him nothing but the best in retirement as well and would be more than happy to move on. But for better or for worse, he is a Met, and that means he is on my team and my support of the team comes first. So I guess I’m not Mr. Positive where he’s concerned, but I’m not the most negative fan by any means either and don’t wish him anything bad.

      • KinersKornerman says:

meant to say “amazed” getting late.

        • AlreadyMissShea says:

I was a little quick to click the add comment on the last one. My main concern with the contract and the Mets being the Mets is that they are either going to end up trying to have him work for every last dime if he can still stand up, or they are going to eat a good part of the deal and throw good money after bad. We’ve seen that before (not just with this team), and it doesn’t usually work out all that great.

        • KinersKornerman says:

I would hate to see that too. The decision point will be who else could be acquired. Mark Ellis and O-Hudson are FAs in 2009. They might be upgrades, but not much else is out there. If Argenis Reyes makes progress, maybe he is the guy to take over 2B in 2010.

Love that double play combo. Reyes-Reyes-Texeira.

        • AlreadyMissShea says:

“If Argenis Reyes makes progress, maybe he is the guy to take over 2B in 2010.”

Now that is something I could look forward to, because you are not throwing good money after bad to get someone else who may or may not produce while you are still on the hook for the Castillo deal. And by that point, I don’t see how Castillo could be anything more than a role player, and probably an effective one at that.

For now it’s just watching him go through the daily grind and knowing there are still 127 games left that makes me hold my breath and pray a lot. :)

        • KinersKornerman says:

I’ll be saying those prayers, too.

Would be nice to add more home-grown talent to the team, too. Substitute Carp for Tex and bump the prayers up to a Novena.

        • getupkids026 says:

you do realize that argenis reyes is not homegrown. he played his entire career in the indians organization, before getting released this past winter. he’s utility player at best.

      • metsfansberealistic says:

the problem is that the contract makes the team, apparently, feel obligated to play Castillo

same as it was with Kaz Matsui

        and Schoeneweis

it’s a very stupid way to go about things

your team is your team, and the best player should play each position

at this point, that’s Damion Easley

        • KinersKornerman says:

are you saying Easley is a better player than Castillo (when healthy) ?

  21. Gilch says:

an all star 3rd baseman and an all star shortstop. 2 of the better players in the league is not enuff homegrown talent for you?

    • KinersKornerman says:

Don’t get me wrong. I’m very happy with the Allstart leftside of the infield plus the two starters and the OF we now have on the roster.

The context of my point was that for 2B, I would like for Argenis Reyes to get a shot at replacing Castillo in the future.

  22. Koko says:

Who cares how long Castillo’s contract is? Yes it is long, but at the end it is only a problem if it stops the Mets from signing a player down the road. The Mets aren’t short of cash - hence their #3 payroll.

Castillo may not be the best second basemen around, but there are a few Brandon Phillips or Chase Utley’s in the league. He does his job on occassion and that is what we ask of him.

    • therealsince86 says:

What I don’t get is people complaining about Castillo and how they don’t like him or his contract and then let in on the contract even more.
Either way he would have been on the team this year. Worry about how bad he is in 2010 in uhhhhh 2010. There is no reason to constantly complain about his production and his contract.
