by Mike Nichols

The Game:

The Mets (18-16) look to take the rubber match of their three-game series versus the Reds (15-22) today at Shea Stadium, starting at 1:10 pm.

The Lineup:

The Pitchers:

LHP Oliver Perez (2-3, 4.63 ERA) starts for the Mets. Perez earned a loss in his last start on May 5 versus the Dodgers allowing five runs on six hits and two walks while striking out over 6.0 IP. Opponents are hitting .214 (6-for-28) against Perez with RISP. He is 8-3 with a 4.06 ERA in 16 career starts versus the Reds.

RHP Johnny Cueto (2-3, 5.27 ERA) takes the hill for the Reds. Cueto allowed three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out eight through 6.0 IP in a win during his last start on May 5 versus the Cubs. In 41.0 IP this season, Cueto has struck out 41 and walked just eight batters. This is first career starts versus the Mets.

Notes:

Brandon Phillips is batting .397 with 4 HR and 19 RBI in his career versus the Mets. He is 3-for-8 (.375) versus Perez in his career.

Joey Votto is batting .367 (11-for-30) with 3 HR and 10 RBI versus left-handed pitching this season.

The Reds are 12-0 when leading after the seventh inning this season.

Carlos Beltran is batting .350 (7-for-20) in his last seven games. He is batting .259 with 1 HR and 3 RBI versus right-haned pitchers this season.

The Mets are 4-1 in rubber games of series this season.

lets go met, lets go mets, lets go mets.
The Cowbell Man is really starting to urk me.

dannyguira May 11, 2008 at 12:23 pm

I say we fire the Cowbell Man he is the rally killer!!!!!!!!

KinersKornerman May 11, 2008 at 12:32 pm

Schneider is catching and playing Dr. Phil for OP today. I feel good about that.

Happy Mothers Day to all of you, and LGM!

novanoto May 11, 2008 at 1:04 pm

happy mothers day to all! hopefully ollie thinks it’s last mothers day and puts up another 8 1/3 solid innings!!

PS-on the reds feed, they just had a quick line from arroyo regarding last night saying that he noticed things that the mets were laying off of, so he just kept going with it…i guess no one on the mets staff realized this though……………….

KinersKornerman May 11, 2008 at 1:12 pm

Fire Jerry Manuel maybe?

KinersKornerman May 11, 2008 at 12:39 pm

Wow, On the Ed Coleman’s WFAN interview, Willie said Ollie needs to step up today and that he “put up a real stinker last time” Almost spilled my coffee when I heard that.

IsiahRandolph May 11, 2008 at 12:39 pm

since its mothers day, lets say schneider is playing Dr. Melfi.

this isnt a must win game for the team, but i know the fans feel that way. boy, i cant even begin to fathom what kind of comments will appear on this thread if the mets lose this series.

over/under on fire willie comments: 37.5

KinersKornerman May 11, 2008 at 12:47 pm

Careful there I.R.
Melfi sounds like G r i f f e y.

That’s pretty low over/under for a Sunday game. Put me down for 10 bucks on the over regardless of game outcome.

Is there any action on the Fire Sandy line?

IsiahRandolph May 11, 2008 at 12:50 pm

i checked the vegas odds:

the over/under on fire sandy comments is 13.5

KinersKornerman May 11, 2008 at 1:02 pm

LOL. That’s very smart. :)

IsiahRandolph May 11, 2008 at 1:13 pm

6 pitches to the first batter. if we extrapolate, hell only face about 16-17 batters, meaning hell only go, at most, 5.2 innings. man our bullpen is done!

Church May 11, 2008 at 12:40 pm

I’m just glad we aren’t playing the Brewers, I guarantee Bill Hall goes yard with that pink bat today.

Dirtysanchez May 11, 2008 at 12:57 pm

Lets go mets

jose--jose-jose-jose May 11, 2008 at 1:01 pm

I love how Keith calls it the “Golden Glove.”

jose--jose-jose-jose May 11, 2008 at 1:06 pm

…and for those of you who have RCN (or maybe it was on other cable providers too) we are all now dumber for watching that Six Flags commercial.

giuseppe franco_procede May 11, 2008 at 1:11 pm

…and may God have mercy on our soul!

giuseppe franco_procede May 11, 2008 at 1:19 pm

Good inning thrown by Perez. Let’s hope he can get us a quality start.

KinersKornerman May 11, 2008 at 1:22 pm

Good start for Reyes

KinersKornerman May 11, 2008 at 1:24 pm

Looks like Slappy took some vitamins this morning

jose--jose-jose-jose May 11, 2008 at 1:24 pm

OH MY GOD! Did I just see Luis Castillo….. oh my god, I’m speechless.

IsiahRandolph May 11, 2008 at 1:24 pm

did slappy just hit the ball to the outfield?

giuseppe franco_procede May 11, 2008 at 1:24 pm

Triple by Castillo? WOW! Reyes got on base early…stole second and easily scored…Potential good omen?

the Straw May 11, 2008 at 1:25 pm

Must be the pink bats!

IsiahRandolph May 11, 2008 at 1:29 pm

keep it coming

giuseppe franco_procede May 11, 2008 at 1:30 pm

Church playing with the flu? Interesting.

Web May 11, 2008 at 1:48 pm

Church is one of the few on this team with a set.

giuseppe franco_procede May 11, 2008 at 1:54 pm

Grapefruits! HA!

giuseppe franco_procede May 11, 2008 at 1:31 pm

Way to go Alou!

IsiahRandolph May 11, 2008 at 1:32 pm

oliver generally pitches to the opposition. if the opposing pitcher gives up 7 runs, he gives up 6-8. if the opposing pitcher gives up 2 runs, he gives up 1-3. lets hope he doesnt pitch to cuetos level.

Prismo May 11, 2008 at 1:36 pm

Now there’s some positive thinking!

KinersKornerman May 11, 2008 at 1:33 pm

3 runs in the first. Should help Ollie keep his head together.

MainStMets May 11, 2008 at 1:33 pm

great line about alou from my buddy im watching the game with…

“they say alou can roll out of bed and get a hit, thats why hes always hurt, he doesnt stretch”

love the pink shoes on jose lol

giuseppe franco_procede May 11, 2008 at 1:37 pm

Agreed the guys from Queer Eye for the Straight Guy dressed Reyes. LOL

KinersKornerman May 11, 2008 at 1:38 pm

Keppinger is the latest Met killer. Ugh.

IsiahRandolph May 11, 2008 at 1:39 pm

i wonder if the reds will accept jose reyes for jeff keppinger. we can also add vicente padilla and a ham sandwich to the deal.

KinersKornerman May 11, 2008 at 1:41 pm

Is it good ham?

giuseppe franco_procede May 11, 2008 at 1:43 pm

Probably Boars Head.

KinersKornerman May 11, 2008 at 1:42 pm

OP at bats usually the height of entertainment. Go Ollie.

KinersKornerman May 11, 2008 at 1:49 pm

I love how he flinches when he fouls off a pitch.

giuseppe franco_procede May 11, 2008 at 1:46 pm

Someone pinch me! Did Ollie just steal second?

IsiahRandolph May 11, 2008 at 1:46 pm

ollie!???? dont fatigue yourself. i wonder what goes through this buffoons head

CitizenSnips May 11, 2008 at 1:46 pm

Did…did Ollie just steal a base?

IsiahRandolph May 11, 2008 at 1:48 pm

im afraid the wheels might come off here. i hope oliver didnt tire himself out

SoDakMets May 11, 2008 at 1:55 pm

Good call on Oliver being tired. You could tell that he was tired by how fast he went through the inning. He only wanted to face 3 guys. He was too tired to pitch to more.

IsiahRandolph May 11, 2008 at 2:06 pm

im a disillusioned mets fan. nowhere did i say that he was definitively going to fail. i was just expressing reservations

SoDakMets May 11, 2008 at 1:51 pm

Must be tough for alot of the folks in here to always come up with negative comments when the team is doing well. But, they always find something to complain about. Well done.

Although, I assume that 99% of those folks have only been fans since 06.

Go Mets!

UncleMuscles May 11, 2008 at 1:57 pm

you hit it right on the head…its all these new fans …even if we take 2 out of 3 they will still be complaining…..

SoDakMets May 11, 2008 at 2:00 pm

The same thing happened with the Red Sox. Once they started to win alot, then all the bandwagon fans came along. It is those fans that are usually the extreme.

I think the long term fans are more even keeled and know that there team is never the best nor the worst ever. It is alot easier to be paitient when you have followed this team with the likes of BobbyBo in the outfield.

njmatt May 11, 2008 at 1:52 pm

Did anyone else watching the reds’ feed enjoy that arroyo commercial with him “playing” the guitar. Just his face at the end cracked me up. I’m not a sox fan or anything but, having lived up here in Boston I always liked Arroyo when he played for them.

IsiahRandolph May 11, 2008 at 1:54 pm

florida is up 1-0… i feel like they havent been behind in a game in a week!

UncleMuscles May 11, 2008 at 1:58 pm

who cares

KinersKornerman May 11, 2008 at 2:00 pm

They are hot right now. 6 game winning streak, including 2 shutouts. However, the competition is the Nats right now.

KinersKornerman May 11, 2008 at 1:54 pm

Ollie in a groove right now. He loves Mothers Day starts.

giuseppe franco_procede May 11, 2008 at 1:56 pm

And according to Cohen he also enjoys Cinco De Mayo. LOL

KinersKornerman May 11, 2008 at 2:02 pm

Me too. Margarita’s for all my friends!!

giuseppe franco_procede May 11, 2008 at 1:56 pm

Another good inning by Perez. He’s doing it with his pitches and quite frankly, his speed. Who would’ve thought he knew when to steal second. Cohen mentioned the steal was the third of his career.

AndrewP May 11, 2008 at 1:59 pm

The Reds are just the type of team Ollie likes to face.. on the whole they are pretty hacktastic. This is gonna be a good one boys!

Happy Mother’s Day

LET’S GO METS!

KinersKornerman May 11, 2008 at 2:03 pm

Looks like Willie is looking for more running. 3 SB attempts in first 3 innings, altho I’m not sure OP’s steal was intentional.

AndrewP May 11, 2008 at 2:12 pm

About Ollie’s steal, like you said it probably wasn’t called from the dugout….Ollie on a mission to prove something to his teammates? That can’t be a bad thing.

AndrewP May 11, 2008 at 2:13 pm

I remember once in Little League I was daydreaming on first base and got picked off.. I was burning for a whole week, then next week first time I got on I stole second, stole third on the next pitch, and ended up scoring on a wild pitch. That’s what Ollie’s steal reminds me of.

stickguy May 11, 2008 at 2:06 pm

Cueto seems to be settling in. Ollie better keep this up, because if Cueto keeps dealing like he just was (and King everyone), those 3 runs might be it for the day. Not that we have ever seen that happen, right?

KinersKornerman May 11, 2008 at 2:13 pm

Well, Cueto did walk Wright to start the inning and Wright got caught stealing. Not sure he is locked in. 61 pitches thru 3 innings.

giuseppe franco_procede May 11, 2008 at 2:10 pm

Okay to continue the conversation Cohen and Hernandez are discussing, I enjoy and love the Mets black alternate uniform. I think I am in the minority. As far as the worst Mets uniform is concerned. I agree with Cohen, the Mets road uniform with the words New York written in script are among the worst Mets uniforms.

giuseppe franco_procede May 11, 2008 at 2:11 pm

But then again…you have to think about the Mercury Mets as the worst. Remeber those? LOL

zemonstar May 11, 2008 at 2:13 pm

i also love the Black Alternate uniform

Lets_Go_Mets May 11, 2008 at 2:14 pm

The 1995-1997 uniforms were the best.

KinersKornerman May 11, 2008 at 2:15 pm

The road grey uni’s? Really?

giuseppe franco_procede May 11, 2008 at 2:17 pm

The one’s from the early nineties…not the current road unie’s…It was written in script. Do you remember those? YUCK! LOL

KinersKornerman May 11, 2008 at 2:22 pm

Oh…yeah, those were terrible.

AndrewP May 11, 2008 at 2:17 pm

I didn’t like the black jersey for a while, I guess I’m a bit of a traditionalist and of course all these alternates are just to make more money. My favorite has always been the blue hats and the pinstripes, but the black has grown on me.

giuseppe franco_procede May 11, 2008 at 2:20 pm

I agree…the black unies is to capitalize on merchandising. Each sport allows their teams to utilize an alternate (i.e, NY Ranger, NJ Nets etc). I currently enjoy the old school Mets blue cap, too.

gipper91375 May 11, 2008 at 3:06 pm

I prefer the traditional pinstripes, blue hats at home and grey road unis with traditional blue hats. I’m ok with teh road blacks as an occasional alternate on the road only, but use the all black hats, not the awful black-n-blue hats. The NY just doesn’t show well on TV on the black-n-blues.

stickguy May 11, 2008 at 2:13 pm

gotta love Keith. He was just complainging about the weather, and asked how the Pilgrams made it through the 1st winter. Now he is talking about the Framer’s almanac.

THink you get this kind of stuff from Joe Buck or John Sterling?

giuseppe franco_procede May 11, 2008 at 2:14 pm

True…but Hernandez is likable. Unlike the other two, who quite fankly, try too hard!

Steve in DC May 11, 2008 at 2:15 pm

I’m watching the Reds feed on Extra Innings and I just saw a commercial for a dating site- FarmersOnly.com. The tag line: “Keep away from those city slickers.”

Yikes.

giuseppe franco_procede May 11, 2008 at 2:15 pm

A bunch of Yokels looking for love. HA!

AndrewP May 11, 2008 at 2:20 pm

Yeah I’m watching that feed too. For anyone without Extra Innings, if you like Gary, Keith, and Ron now, just imagine if you had to listen to the Marlins’ announcers for an entire 4 game series… we have the best announcing team around…they have a turtle and a ferret.

gipper91375 May 11, 2008 at 3:08 pm

Oh man, the Marlin’s and Nats announc`ers are the worst…with the D’bags close behind. On days like today when the Cini feed is on Extra Innings, I go to MLB.tv and am thrilled to have the SNY (in this case ch. 11) feed…even if it is on my computer rather than on my large TV.

stickguy May 11, 2008 at 2:15 pm

Hey, I like this Ollie better than the one we have had so far this year. I think the Mets should keep him, and dump the other one.

Now just have a couple of efficient innings, and go at least 7.

although with the forcast, would not be surprised if they get another unexpected day off tomorrow. Man, they are going to need about 8 SPs in the rotation later in the year when they have to make up all these games.

stickguy May 11, 2008 at 2:18 pm

Now Keith just called his duaghter (who he was in the process of texting) a “knucklehead”, so of course Gary made an apple not falling far from the tree crack.

I’m glad I got the mlb.tv this year. Otherwise, I would never get to see these guys.

giuseppe franco_procede May 11, 2008 at 2:24 pm

When Gary, Keith and Ron were paired up in 2006…I was against it. But, since then, wow, they keep me entertained. They have their own sense of humor and have great chemistry. What would I do without them? LOL

KinersKornerman May 11, 2008 at 2:18 pm

OP is a madman. Nice bunt.

giuseppe franco_procede May 11, 2008 at 2:18 pm

Perez is pitching well…stealing bases and bunts. As Keith just mentioned, he should pretend every start is Mother’s Day!

KinersKornerman May 11, 2008 at 2:20 pm

Dammit. Delgado’s clogging up the basebaths for OP. No steal this time.

IsiahRandolph May 11, 2008 at 2:24 pm

jeff keppinger…

KinersKornerman May 11, 2008 at 2:25 pm

i hate that guy

SoDakMets May 11, 2008 at 2:26 pm

I say that we start a petition right now that Perez can only be caught by Brian. WE need to get this done ASAP.

No “stinker” so far…

giuseppe franco_procede May 11, 2008 at 2:29 pm

And the same can be said for Pelfrey. He pitches well with Schneider. Although, he had a good outing last night.

SoDakMets May 11, 2008 at 2:34 pm

I think that just by having a guy that is called a “defensive catcher” it makes the younger and less successful pitchers go with what he says.

With the other backstops, I think that the confidence that the hurlers have in the called pitches is much less.

Koko May 11, 2008 at 2:32 pm

He wouldn’t have if he had pitched last nights game with Pelfry.

But I think Schneider should catch as many games as possible regardless – and he will. But catchers need their games off – more so then certain players (not named Alou and Castillo).

AndrewP May 11, 2008 at 2:38 pm

I’m curious about exploring what level of Schneider-ness exists, but today from what I see I also give credit to Wagner’s mouth. Sometimes his words are ill-advised, but in the case of Ollie’s last start I think he said what needed to be said.

IsiahRandolph May 11, 2008 at 2:32 pm

ollie!!!!!!!!!

giuseppe franco_procede May 11, 2008 at 2:34 pm

I think someone stated earlier…Ollie is trying to prove a point. He was called out last week. And now he’s trying to prove he is not the incosistent pitcher in recent weeks. I hope he pitches like this throughout the season.

Koko May 11, 2008 at 2:36 pm

And maybe Scott Boras told him he is playing for multi millions too.

KinersKornerman May 11, 2008 at 2:33 pm

one-hitter through 5 innings with 8K’s
This is what we are looking for from Ollie.

KinersKornerman May 11, 2008 at 2:35 pm

Slappy doing what he does best.
Finally we got one over on Keppinger.

khmustache May 11, 2008 at 2:36 pm

i don’t know if anybody is watching the cincy feed, but they have this commercial for a fast food place where bronson arroyo plays the guitar and sings the jingle…it’s so wonderfully bad, it makes guiseppe franco look like citizen cane…

giuseppe franco_procede May 11, 2008 at 2:38 pm

Guiseppe Franco says on his death bed, “Procede”

AndrewP May 11, 2008 at 2:39 pm

Thanks, I was just starting to forget it! You need earplugs to watch a Reds feed..

giuseppe franco_procede May 11, 2008 at 2:39 pm

Way to go Mets…Beltran is finally turning things around. WOO HOO

AndrewP May 11, 2008 at 2:40 pm

Beltran’s the MAN

KinersKornerman May 11, 2008 at 2:41 pm

Beltran’s back, and there’s gonna be trouble

giuseppe franco_procede May 11, 2008 at 2:41 pm

Back to back! Beltran and Church! Damn, I’m glad the Mets picked up on Church! Get better Church!

twassel May 11, 2008 at 2:41 pm

Church on Sunday! Oh wait…

giuseppe franco_procede May 11, 2008 at 2:43 pm

Damn I was about to say that…Great minds think alike. :0)

KinersKornerman May 11, 2008 at 2:41 pm

Church!!! Not bad for a guy with the flu.

Steve in DC May 11, 2008 at 2:42 pm

I still don’t get this offense. 12 runs, 1 run, 6 so far…
Dizzying season indeed.

UncleMuscles May 11, 2008 at 2:43 pm

booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Steve in DC May 11, 2008 at 2:53 pm

I’ve never booed a Mets player, it’s just startling how we can go from highs to lows so suddenly.

JohanMartinez May 11, 2008 at 2:42 pm

Lastings who??? Nice trade Omar ……GO METS!!

giuseppe franco_procede May 11, 2008 at 2:44 pm

And although he’s been a bit inconsistent great trade on Santana. :0)

KinersKornerman May 11, 2008 at 2:48 pm

Angel Pagan trade looking decent, too

jws366 May 11, 2008 at 2:43 pm

Can Oliver finish this game without exploding…that is the question…

WrightsRight May 11, 2008 at 2:48 pm

you mean imploding….

jws366 May 11, 2008 at 2:59 pm

no, exploding…its more serious

Nate W. May 11, 2008 at 3:14 pm

I’m with imploding, pressure makes things implode… or collapse.

sorry, bad choice of words.

IsiahRandolph May 11, 2008 at 2:44 pm

his pitch count is near 80. if we get 2 more from him, im content

giuseppe franco_procede May 11, 2008 at 2:46 pm

Yup two more innings and he will earn his pay. lol

MetsUKfan May 11, 2008 at 2:45 pm

well then?

who was worried yesterday by the mets splitting the double header?

the bats are coming alive with better weather and more balance of righties and lefties.

KinersKornerman May 11, 2008 at 2:48 pm

It’s only one game, just like yesterday evening as well as yesterday afternoon.

Let’s keep our swings level, and not make hyperbolic predictions on one gaem, good or bad.

IR, what’s the over/under on the word “inconsistency”?

giuseppe franco_procede May 11, 2008 at 2:48 pm

Last nights loss was disappointing, but remember, most of us felt the Mets would win five out of seven on this home stand. Right now, it looks good.

IsiahRandolph May 11, 2008 at 2:53 pm

trying … so… hard … not … to be … pessimistic

AndrewP May 11, 2008 at 2:54 pm

Brandon Phillips exemplifying the meaning of the word “hacktastic.” Ollie says, “Thank you very much!”

Nate W. May 11, 2008 at 2:56 pm

Moises Alou trying to endear himself to the fans by doing his best Angel Pagan impersonation in LF? ;)

IsiahRandolph May 11, 2008 at 2:58 pm

keppinger….

KinersKornerman May 11, 2008 at 2:59 pm

Jeff Freakin’ Keppinger

Nate W. May 11, 2008 at 3:00 pm

regarding what Gary was saying about a call up of a starter…

Not only was Bostick removed after 3 innings last night, but Armas Jr. was held out of todays start, which was his turn in the rotation.

Oddly, I’m hopefully they get the rainout tomorrow so they can avoid needing the extra starter, and can get Wise activated.

I wonder how long the Mets can keep Wise a ‘healthy scratch’ until the union starts complaining.

jws366 May 11, 2008 at 3:00 pm

PANIC

KinersKornerman May 11, 2008 at 3:00 pm

Walk to G r i f f e y started this inning. True what they say about walks.

AndrewP May 11, 2008 at 3:03 pm

Yeah, especially leadoff walks with a 5 run lead.

SoDakMets May 11, 2008 at 3:00 pm

Maybe this is a good thing. If Ollie can work through this inning, perhaps it will be a step towards him not imploding all the time.

Although, I do give all the bandwagon jumping trolls about 10 minutes to flood in here…

IsiahRandolph May 11, 2008 at 3:02 pm

sodak, i dont think you know what bandwagon means. dont bandwagon fans follow good teams?

SoDakMets May 11, 2008 at 3:46 pm

It is nice to hear that Beltran is saying his knees are starting to come around. When he gets going, then we will see this team become more consistent on the offense which will also let our pitchers relax.

jws366 May 11, 2008 at 3:01 pm

“This is so Oliver Perez.” – Keith Hernandez

gipper91375 May 11, 2008 at 4:08 pm

We can just use “Oliver Perez” as a synonymous phrase for “inconsistent”.

Nate W. May 11, 2008 at 3:02 pm

The OF’s got their running in that inning. Come on Perez, get it back together!

KinersKornerman May 11, 2008 at 3:02 pm

Well, we got 6 innings from Ollie. 3 runs and about 100 pitches. Are we satisfied?

AndrewP May 11, 2008 at 3:05 pm

Seven would have been nice, but all that’s important now is we close out the game. Let’s finish them off! How ’bout we tack on a few boys?

Nate W. May 11, 2008 at 3:07 pm

Its exactly that, satisfactory. A minimum quality start, going back to the talk about QS’s earlier in the week.

SoDakMets May 11, 2008 at 3:03 pm

Can’t really blame that inning completely on Ollie. Alou should have had that fly ball.

jws366 May 11, 2008 at 3:05 pm

He’s no Ryan Church…

KinersKornerman May 11, 2008 at 3:05 pm

But Church and Beltran made some pretty good plays on well hit balls. The wild pitch was on Ollie.

MudvilleNine May 11, 2008 at 3:04 pm

As I said yesterday when it comes to pitch count. Ollie reaches 85 pitches and loses it.

metsfanmurph May 11, 2008 at 3:05 pm

You can never trust Perez. A 6 run lead and you walk the leadoff hitter… that is all you need to know.

jws366 May 11, 2008 at 3:06 pm

Luis Castillo out with “tightness in his left quad.”

“Thats a concern…he is your second baseman.” – Keith

…really?

Nate W. May 11, 2008 at 3:10 pm

yea, OF’s dont need thier quads apparently…

I dont get Keith today, he seems to be mailing it in after the double dip yesterday.

wrightstuff08 May 11, 2008 at 3:11 pm

Castillo is hurt?? what a surprise

gipper91375 May 11, 2008 at 3:17 pm

Keith can say what he wants, after all, he;s Keith Hernandez.

Still……this booth is at its best when all three are working a game.

Wondy May 11, 2008 at 3:29 pm

Wonder how tight that quad will be 3 years from now…ugh.

IsiahRandolph May 11, 2008 at 3:12 pm

it could be precautionary.

IsiahRandolph May 11, 2008 at 3:13 pm

huge tack-on run

gipper91375 May 11, 2008 at 3:20 pm

Alright. This is a game you have to get after that debacle yesterday afternoon. Let’s see if the pen can put up some zeroes.

jws366 May 11, 2008 at 3:22 pm

Scho has a 1.74 ERA in 15 appearances…

eligoodrich May 11, 2008 at 3:24 pm

the mets are rad…. 32 runs in 4 games, im down

jws366 May 11, 2008 at 3:28 pm

WOAH…that was not scott schoenweiss on the mound…

props to willie for putting him out there against lefties…

IsiahRandolph May 11, 2008 at 3:28 pm

do we stretch out scho for one more inning?

InsaneMetsFan May 11, 2008 at 3:31 pm

I would

Wondy May 11, 2008 at 3:31 pm

Turning it back on w/ two outs after giving up a couple is definitely a good sign…I’m liking this lineup a lot, especially with Beltran and Delgado showing signs of coming around.

IsiahRandolph May 11, 2008 at 3:37 pm

i think either church or delgado should assume the #7 spot in the lineup. alou should be placed in between to avoid the back-to-back lefties in the lineup. if delgado begins to turn it around, itll be interesting to see if willie keeps him in the 7 hole

IsiahRandolph May 11, 2008 at 3:51 pm

let smith bat!

IsiahRandolph May 11, 2008 at 3:52 pm

florida came back from a 4-1 deficit, scoring 3 in the 8th to beat the nats 5-4. you have to be kidding ,e

METS08WSCHAMPS May 11, 2008 at 3:53 pm

Stinkin Marlins win again

WrightsRight May 11, 2008 at 3:55 pm

Uggla had 2 more HRs. He’s on my fantasy team so I’m happy… i asked this last night: when do we all acknowledge that the Marlins might be for real?

METS08WSCHAMPS May 11, 2008 at 3:54 pm

time to blow it open with weathers in

METS08WSCHAMPS May 11, 2008 at 3:54 pm

good thing this team has a dayoff tommorrow. Long 24 hrs

MudvilleNine May 11, 2008 at 3:59 pm

What team?

gipper91375 May 11, 2008 at 4:15 pm

Wachutalkinabout Willis??!? That is not the case for the Mets, who play the Nats tomorrow at 7:10pm.

METS08WSCHAMPS May 11, 2008 at 3:59 pm

The Mets it will be ppd tommorrow

MudvilleNine May 11, 2008 at 4:03 pm

More than likely but they did have 2 days off before this past 24 hours. They’ll also probably play a double header Wed. or Thur. if that was the case.

METS08WSCHAMPS May 11, 2008 at 4:04 pm

No they wont because the Nats come in later

MudvilleNine May 11, 2008 at 4:08 pm

Bunch several double headers closer to the end of the season? What happens when they come in that last time and one of those games get rained out? Play back to back double headers? Thats why ATL scheduled the upcoming doubleheader this time in and not the last.

METS08WSCHAMPS May 11, 2008 at 4:08 pm

Reds batted out of order

MudvilleNine May 11, 2008 at 4:09 pm

That batter bats again

MudvilleNine May 11, 2008 at 4:11 pm

Only if Patterson gets up. If Freely gets up and sees one pitch than the batting out of order becomes moot.

WrightsRight May 11, 2008 at 4:14 pm

I was informed there would be no math involved during this game…

Nate W. May 11, 2008 at 4:14 pm

What a pathetic display of lack of understanding of the basic rules by both Willie Randolph and Dusty Baker. Disgraceful!

jose--jose-jose-jose May 11, 2008 at 4:16 pm

By willie? Seriously, you are going to blame him for this? Jeez, the umpires hardly even know what the heck is going on.

What we learn in the end is that Baker is an idiot for batting his guys out of order. End of discussion.

AlreadyMissShea May 11, 2008 at 4:20 pm

Willie was wrong when he came out of the dugout. Even Cohen is saying so, but it should be obvious anyway. You let them bat and let the inning play itself out. You come out only after it becomes necessary. Meanwhile Feliciano is standing on the mound getting cold. Yeah, Willie was wrong here too. Sorry.

MudvilleNine May 11, 2008 at 4:26 pm

Willie was wrong but he would have had to come out before Freel got up because Freel would have been batting in the correct order. Once a pitch would have been thrown to him, Willie couldnt argue the first two batting out of order. My question is where’s Jerry Manuel on that? He’s the bench coach and the one to keep Willie from going out there that early. And what about the other coaches? They didnt know either so they didnt say anything? Says something about the whole coaching staff there.

AlreadyMissShea May 11, 2008 at 4:35 pm

Well, this will start to drift off topic, but all the more reason that everyone here should (hopefully) agree that regardless of how we as individuals feel about Willie, the best course of action is for the team to win with him.

I don’t like Willie, but there isn’t anyone else, at least with the team right now, that I would trust any more than I trust him. I hope they get as far as they can with what they have this season, avoid as much interruption as poosible, and then if they want to run everyone out of town and bring in a new staff in ‘09, go for it.

MudvilleNine May 11, 2008 at 4:41 pm

Totally agree.

AlreadyMissShea May 11, 2008 at 4:18 pm

Yes, by BOTH of them. Something I’m glad was pointed out while I was watching this stupidity on TV. You are correct.

Now come on, the game for all intents and purposes is over. Can we just finish this off please?

Nate W. May 11, 2008 at 4:21 pm

TY. I thought it was rather obvious, and I love that Gary is pointing it out how Willie messed up.

met optimist May 11, 2008 at 4:25 pm

the real rules for a man batting out of order are such (the SNY announcers got it wrong):

6.07 (c) When an improper batter becomes a runner or is put out, and a pitch is made to the next batter of either team before an appeal is made, the improper batter thereby becomes the proper batter, and the results of his time at bat become legal.

Therefore, if Freel came up to bat after Ross, the order would have been legal. If Freel got a hit, Willie could not have come out of the dugout to argue that Freel batted out of order because according to the rules, the order becomes legal if no appeal is made. So the SNY announcers were wrong and irrespective of whether or not you like Willie, he did not do anything wrong in this situation.

MudvilleNine May 11, 2008 at 4:28 pm

Met Opt – No they had it right because Corey Patterson was getting up and he would have been batting out of order also. If it was Freel then you would be right and them wrong.

met optimist May 11, 2008 at 4:31 pm

if i recall correctly, SNY showed a video shot of Freel coming to bat right after Ross, and Patterson sitting in the dugout without a helmet on.

MudvilleNine May 11, 2008 at 4:33 pm

No Corey Patterson was just outside the batters box when Willie came out of the dugout. Even Gary was saying that Patterson was out there to hit.

Nate W. May 11, 2008 at 4:34 pm

that was after Baker came out to talk to the umps, which was after Willie came out. Before that Patterson was on deck ready to go. Baker took Patterson back to the dugout with him.

Baker almost let Freel bat out of order as well, but the umps went back to get Ross the second time.

met optimist May 11, 2008 at 4:36 pm

that works. then willie should have waited. my bad.

MudvilleNine May 11, 2008 at 4:38 pm

The real strange thing is Patterson was in the ondeck circle when their previous at bat ended ready to pinch hit the inning before. What the heck was he thinking?

acraane May 11, 2008 at 4:15 pm

Cohen is such a dork

METS08WSCHAMPS May 11, 2008 at 4:16 pm

Keith has dinner reservations at 5

gipper91375 May 11, 2008 at 4:16 pm

Blind confused by the blind here between Dusty and Willie.

Arsenal13 May 11, 2008 at 4:16 pm

these umps are going to hate willie for bringing up this whole issue and making them look like morons

Nate W. May 11, 2008 at 4:16 pm

I think the Mets have Ross batting somewhere other than 8th or 9th, and that is the extra confusion.

Arsenal13 May 11, 2008 at 4:18 pm

these umps are killing me

IsiahRandolph May 11, 2008 at 4:18 pm

“can i tell you something, howie. these umpires just don’t know”

IsiahRandolph May 11, 2008 at 4:19 pm

shouldnt feliciano get to warm up again?

Nate W. May 11, 2008 at 4:22 pm

He’s already effectively pitched three innings, do we need him to throw more pitches?

METS08WSCHAMPS May 11, 2008 at 4:21 pm

Put In the Books!!!!!!!!!!

MudvilleNine May 11, 2008 at 4:21 pm

An extra ten minutes for nothing

IsiahRandolph May 11, 2008 at 4:21 pm

glad to hear howie say “put it in the books”.

AlreadyMissShea May 11, 2008 at 4:25 pm

They take two out of three and move on to the Nats. Most of us said 5-2 would be acceptable in these two series. I don’t see any reason why they won’t do that (weather permitting), so I can go do the Mother’s Day stuff feeling pretty good about where things are at the moment.

Nate W. May 11, 2008 at 4:28 pm

I hope there was something more to the batting out of order mess than was obvious. I think they showed the Mets lineup card in the dugout and it looked like Ross wasnt in the 9th hole or the 8th hole. Maybe the Mets had Weathers 9th and Ross 5th?

IsiahRandolph May 11, 2008 at 4:31 pm

we need 3 out of 4 against the nats

Nate W. May 11, 2008 at 4:33 pm

I’ll take 3 out of 3 ;)

the rainout tomorrow would let them reset the rotation and avoid needing another starter. At least until they go to Colorado.

AlreadyMissShea May 11, 2008 at 4:38 pm

My refrigerator magnet is gonna start sliding down pretty soon from all of the tickets it’s holding up that have to be PPD. It already looks like tomorrow will be another one.

MudvilleNine May 11, 2008 at 4:52 pm

I dont see them delaying tomorrow’s game till the next time the Nats are in unless there’s a day off the day before or after that series. If there isnt I could see them playing a doubleheader Wed. or Thur. As I said a little further up this thread, cant take the chance that a game in that series gets rained out and be forced to play doubleheaders back to back. Then again as I sit here typing, Willie and Omar might want to take that chance so as not to have to bring up someone to pitch. Well after looking at the sched they have days off on each side of the 2 game series and thats in Sept so they could have someone called up to handle a doubleheader if neccesary. So I guess my whole response has become moot. LOL
