Buzz: Mets A Likely Suitor For Garcia
By Mike Nichols - May 12, 2008 3:50 pm

Ken Davidoff of Newsday lists possible suitors for Freddy Garcia and ranks the Mets as the likely destination for the veteran right-handed pitcher.

According to Davidoff, the 32-year old Garcia would not be available to pitch until the All-Star break.

Garcia is 117-76 with a 4.07 ERA with a 1.30 WHIP in his nine year career. He appeared in 11 games for the Phillies last season going 1-5 with a 5.90 ERA with 50 strikeouts and 19 walks in 59 innings pitched.

…before his injury and his stint in philly aside, garcia proved he was a quality middle of the rotation type starter…so, if he can prove he is healthy, i see no reason why the Mets shouldn’t look into adding garcia to the mix, especially with the status of Orlando Hernandez in doubt and the questionable durability of Pedro Martinez

Well he’s only 31 so he’s not old, but that won’t stop the complaining.

you must be real racist and stupid to profile players by their race and not by their numbers. that being said i take it as you would prefer 45 year old David Wells who is not a colored player than a 31 year freddy garcia who recoverd from injury and might have a brand new arm because Garcia is spanish. If you don’t like latinos might as well become a brave or phillie fan nuthead

I think he was making fun of the people that were going to make the “Omar only signs Latinos” post.

Dude I’m not racist. I was only making the point that there are idiots out there who will slander Omar for only going after Latino ball players which is not true. I don’t care that he’s Spanish, I will care if he is injured and cannot produce when he recovers. It could be a risk signing, but it could also be a reward. Omar is known for doing moves like this.

I am not a fan of Garcia, but if he can help the team then it could be a good signing.

He’s a traveling boot salesman. And he must be a pretty good one because I read that he makes about $6 million a year. His hobbies include throwing off flat ground about once a month.

If nothing else, it would be so awesome to have him come on board, be somewhat effective, and then win a game vs. phila. I would really love that outcome.

My hope would be that we slide Figueroa into the bullpen and cut Sosa.

If Pedro is healthy, Pelfrey is in AAA where he probably belongs right now as our 6th starter ready for the callup.

Figueroa is a nice story and all but i think we all have to realize this story is not gonna have a happy ending. in 4 of his 6 starts he has pitched 5.0 innings or less. That puts strain on the bullpen and Figueroa will be optioned once a better option (Pedro hopefully) emerges

that is why Danny is saying Figueroa should go in the bullpen… also he has ridiculous stats his first time through the opposing lineup (you can look them up if you want, but i dont want to) … that is a good indicator for his potential as a relief pitcher

Well I certainly don’t want to see him filling a role with atlanta or philly…and if the marlins keep it up you don’t want to see them going for a veteran starter either.

He’d definitely be an upgrade over Figueroa. Duque is not throwing a pitch this year. I mean, come on.

If the Yanks’ pitching situation doesn’t improve–and even if it stays where it is right now–I’d be very surprised if they don’t make a big push to sign him.

I don’t condone racism in any shape or form. I was brought up to judge people as indivduals, based on their actions and that’s what I try to do.

I think it can be argued — without injecting racism into the discussion — that Omar Minaya has potentially let his comfort level (rapport, whatever you want to call it) with the Latin ballplayers cloud his baseball decisions. For instance, Brian Bannister was considered expendable for the enigmatic Ambiorix Burgos. Burgos was inconsistent and unsuccessful in Kansas City, but Omar apparently felt that he could be “fixed” in New York and be another steal of a trade (a la John Maine). However, we don’t know if Burgos will pitch again, much less be any good, and Bannister is at least having a respectable career with the Royals.

Omar seems to be obsessed with finding these “diamond in the rough” bargain players and, more often than not, they are Latin ballplayers. He got lucky in a couple of cases, but he’s been wrong in many others.

That being said, Freddie Garcia might be worth looking at because he’s a professional major league pitcher with a decent track record and he isn’t all that old.

But then again whos to say brian would have had the same success in ny. Its impossible to tell. Brian was expendable at the time because we had alot of SP. Omar was making a call for the bullpen and while it has not really paid off, it just seems as such because burgos is injured and bannister is doing well. Again there is no way of knowing brians success in ny if he was still here. Omar was confidant in the abilities of the jacket to fix some of these players who have potential but just need good direction. As far as the race thing it is rediculous. Hell if my whole team was latin but they won 100+ games in a year i and im sure alot of people would not care. And if you wanna go there, remember estrada(latin) would be our catcher but omar shipped him to washington along with milledge for schnieder(white) and church(white). His baseball judgement has not been clouded. Just not all his moves have paid off as he would have wanted. That goes with all GM’s

I can imagine a rotation of

Santana
Maine
Pedro
Garcia
Ollie

with

Armas/Vargas avaiable if Pedro’s return is a mirage that recedes infinitely into the horizon.

Figgy would go to the bullpen, Pelfrey would return to New Orleans for more blackened catfish, and Sosa would be allowed to pursue other career opportunities.

That does look nice, but what happens next year. Hopefully Pelfrey keeps getting better and Ollie stays, despite his ups and downs, you can’t give up on his upside and he’s a lefty.

I really wish we would’ve pursued Livan. Everybody was hating on him (not me), but look how good he’s done for the Twins.

Our current rotation would’ve been:
Santana, Maine, Perez, Livan, Pelf/Figueroa.

I honestly thought the mets should have given Garcia a deal similar to what Lieber got with the Cubs/Yanks a few years ago. This guy was one of the better pitchers in baseball prior to his injuries and if there’s any real belief that he can recover and be 80 percent of what he used to be, that would be a great pickup for the back end of the rotation, this year and next.

I believe that I read that he wasn’t interested in that type of backloaded deal that Lieber got. His goal was to sign a deal mid season, prove he was healthy, and then get a bigger deal next year. We’ll see if it works out for him. If he is healthy I think he’d be able to help the Mets.

correct, that is exactly what Garcia wants to do, so blaming the Mets for not being inventive and signing him doesn’t quite fit here. It was Garcia’s decision to wait it out and prove his health down the road and sign a multi-year deal in the offseason.

Pelfrey clearly needs improvement (15 walks in 33 innings won’t cut it, and he needs to put batters away better when he’s ahead in the count), but his BABIP is absurdly high at .368. He’s given up a lot of “defensive swing” hits (BABIP on 0-2 counts of .400, and on 1-2 counts .500). You can argue he’s been somewhat unlucky, and with some regression to the mean, he’ll be a solid young pitcher as soon as this year.

i used to love Freddy Garcia here in Seattle - what talent he has… but i got very disalusioned after a few years of his crazy inconsistency.

he’s one of those pitchers with talent, who really can’t get it straight enough in the head to be consistent at all. i thought that maybe he’d get it together as he got older, but… he never has.
kinda reminds me of Ollie Perez actually…
