Health: Pedro in PSL Update
By Regis Courtemanche - May 12, 2008 10:10 am

Omar Minaya told reporters yesterday that Pedro Martinez threw 60–pitches in St. Lucie over the weekend.

According to Minaya, Martinez used all of his pitches, and looked ‘good,’ but a timetable has yet to be set as to when Martinez will throw a simulated game.

    loch ness pedro.

well, not really, we know he exists. please please please be healthy now, petey! he’s gotta be so frustrated, and I hope he’s able to take it out on the other guy’s lineup for at least 20 starts this year.

  2. therealsince86 says:

I am guessing he comes back for Figgy? Or are Figgy and Pelfrey competing with each other?

    • Chris Jelic says:

It really depends what the rotation looks like when Pedro is ready to return. We could be talking about the all-star break. He’s still got sim games and then a month of rehab.

    • toomanyuniforms says:

Optimism is great, but this is kind of sad. Expect the best, but prepare for the worst. I’m operating under the assumption that we won’t see much of Pedro this year.

      • AlreadyMissShea says:

Yep, at this point if we are reasonable with our expectations, anything we get out of him is a bonus

  3. rM teM says:

I’m trying to guess what his next injury will be.
    Lower back spasms maybe?

    • MetMaven says:

Maybe vertigo from a mysterious ear infection where he won’t be able stand on the mound without losing his balance.

  4. MetsFanTX says:

Maybe move Figueroa into the bullpen as your “innings” guy. In all of his starts, he’s been effective the first couple of times through the order, then gets roughed up the third time around. Then maybe reassign Sosa, and hope he accepts a minor league spot. Jorge’s won four games somehow, but he looks awfully shaky out there.

    • krumbledkookie says:

Absolutely, Sosa has been plain bad. Time to go, you Eazy-E looking mofo.

    • da burg's greatest says:

yeah, figueroa has something like a .150 baa the first time through the lineup, so he would be a great reliever…sosa has four wins because he has surrendered leads only to have the offense regain them and win the game.

    • jamie says:

assuming he can get it up quickly, absolutely.

      • Gasface77 says:

Well, if he has problems “getting it up,” he could always talk to Rafael Palmeiro.

    • darkstar73 says:

To anyone who hasn’t figured this out yet, wins for a relief pitcher are either a BAD thing, or literally mean NOTHING. Just a heads up to the people who as of now, haven’t made that connection yet.

  5. Metropoliben says:

Is 12-15 starts out of him unrealistic?

I’d take another September performance like last… maybe with some August action thrown in.

  6. bigchart333 says:

yeah man, i been sayin it for a while now and it seems liek im not alone.

    Petey in for Figgy
    move Figgy to the bullpen
    cut BLOWsa

just gotta figure out what to do with matt wise…in the ideal world, we could trade say Heilman and Pagan and pick up a decent starter or somethign and put pelfrey back down in the minors, or maybe a better back up first baseman or them 2 and maybe another one or 2 mid level prospects and get nady…then wise can slide into heilman’s spot and we’ll have a 1b or starter and that can solidify the team and we can get some Ws on a more consistent basis like this team is SUPPOSED to

this is all contingent of course on the health of Pedro and Alou, which is a bad bet

  7. Mets Fan In Philly says:

I also feel like he’s the kind of player that needs to be around and making an impact on the clubhouse, especially with this team.

  8. Hubie says:

I guess the anti-Sosa club is out again today. DABURG PLEASE GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT. NONE of Sosa’s wins have been of the vulture variety. He pitched well in 3 xing games to win agst the Phils, Nats and Bucs, allowing zero runs each time.

  9. mza4eva says:

    Pedro Who???

P.S. who is this allegeed El Duque I hear of?

  10. DK says:

If game on the line, and its a choice btw sosa and heilman I am going with sosa!

  11. metterman says:

I agree with Mets fan in philly,

I really feel like when pedro comes back the team will be pumped, i feel like that may be a huge motivating factor for the rest of the team. I don’t think 12-15 starts is out of the question but still I’m preparing for any more starts to be a bonus. The way he’s pitching right now i can’t see figgy leaving the big league roster, however alot can happen in the 6 or so weeks till pedro may be ready. I’d like to see pelfry stay in the lineup so as of right now i think the only logical move would be to move figgy to the bullpen as the long guy. but again lots can happen till pedro returns…i mean…if pedro returns.

So after saturday seeing heilman go twice in the same day, I’m really just wondering what the mets are doing with him. At this pace he’s due for 90+ appearances…someone made the comment about possibly trading heilman, and I’m wondering if thats not the mets plan. lets use him 50 times by the all star break, and then trade him??? Conspiracy Theory, i know, but i can’t come up with any other logical reason why he continues to get all these appearnces over guys like, smith, feliciano, and schoey who at this point are all pitching better than he is.

    • darkstar73 says:

heilman came into those games with us either down runs, or up a lot of runs. Smith has seen time with us up runs in a close game, clearly he has supplanted Heilman in the bullpen pecking order.

  12. gutterkizmet says:

I heard a rumor, from someone that works at Shea … that Pedro is actually healthy. They are saving him for the all-star break so they can treat him like Clemens on the Yankees last season.

    Motivator
    Savior

    And most of all

less starts equals more likely he is healthy in September and October
