Minors: F-Mart Heating Up
By Regis Courtemanche - May 12, 2008 10:25 am

In his minor league report for the Daily News, Adam Rubin relays a story about Fernando Martinez’s recent discovery that he is allergic to lobster.

Rubin, writes:

“A teammate said Martinez became so swollen he resembled Will Smith’s character in the movie “Hitch,” which the player noted would have been humorous if the reaction hadn’t affected Martinez’s breathing.”

Rubin also notes that after a slow start, Martinez has three straight multi-hit games and a .354 average with two homers in 34 May at-bats.

Would there be a chance he would get moved up to AAA this year? How good would he have to do in AA for that to happen? Would a consistent .300 average do it?

He needs to conquer shellfish first.

I don’t think so. He is still learning. Even though his May numbers look good at first glance, there are still problems there. He isn’t doing too much against LHP (.214 ba) and his eye isn’t that good (7 walks, 39 k’s in 151 at bats). Just looking at the numbers, it seems like he presses too much when there are runners on base as well (1 walk, 14 k’s in 53 at bats).

For the record, I thought it was funny. I didn’t “lol” as the kids say, but it was funny.

And it was intentionally corny, batsinthepelfrey.

Wow, it would really suck to be allergic to lobster. I’d much rather be allergic to something I was never going to touch in the first place, like liver or rhubarb.

You should look into strawberry-rhubarb pie. It will change your whole outlook on rhubarb. It’s delicious.

I too am allergic to lobster, it’s not so bad. For one thing it’s pretty easy to spot something with lobster in it. I feel for anyone with something like a peanut allergy who has to live in fear of anything baked, fried or thai.

what are the odds he’s starting for us in LF next season? I gotta say, im not too sure of that. That being said, what to do with LF next year? Does Pagan hold it down for a year until he’s ready, if we dont trade Pagan? I know it’s way early to look into next year, but still….it’s not like we’re gona sign burrell or Dunn to a 2 year contract or something…just seems to me f mart is still 2 seasons away

Yea, more like 2010 or 2011 before they have him in the starting lineup. Let him develop, he obviously needs to.

He might be ready in two months, two years, or never. Just glad to see him starting to get some hits and staying healthy.

There’s lobster in these eggs?

Not that much. You know, they tend to shrink in the water.

“This place is quite breathtaking, huh? ”

“Yes, it was built by Karl Fargman.”

Love that episode.

Would you have given up F-Mart instead of Carlos Gomez? I think I would’ve. F-Mart may be a power guy, although I haven’t seen that yet, but Gomez seems to be a more exciting player. Imagine having him and Reyes playing together, Wow! Hopefully F-Mart lives up to the hype.
