Read: Delgado’s Loony Agent

by Regis Courtemanche on May 12th, 2008 at 10:54 am

In a post for NJ.com, Dan Graziano relays details of the heated exchange he has with Carlos Delgado‘s agent, David Sloane regarding Delgado’s contract terms.

Graziano, writes back to Sloane:

“The Mets are paying Delgado $12 million in salary this year plus a $4 million buyout on his 2009 option…I won’t hold my breath waiting for your apology”

To which Sloane replied:

“Apologize this retard, he’s making 16 this year WITH an option for next year or a buyout at 4. Nice research by you but then I guess that whole concept of fact finding escapes you huh? They didn’t teach that on the short bus did they?”

…i’m almost speechless…how can someone who represents a professional athlete act like this…

…and sloane, last time i checked, they don’t start teaching until after you get off the bus, i’m just saying…

Minors: F-Mart Heating Up

by Regis Courtemanche on May 12th, 2008 at 10:25 am

In his minor league report for the Daily News, Adam Rubin relays a story about Fernando Martinez‘s recent discovery that he is allergic to lobster.

Rubin, writes:

“A teammate said Martinez became so swollen he resembled Will Smith’s character in the movie “Hitch,” which the player noted would have been humorous if the reaction hadn’t affected Martinez’s breathing.”

Rubin also notes that after a slow start, Martinez has three straight multi-hit games and a .354 average with two homers in 34 May at-bats.

Stat: Schoeneweis Stepping Up

by Regis Courtemanche on May 12th, 2008 at 9:50 am

Scott Schoeneweis currently has an ERA of just 1.50, and has not allowed a run in 14 of his 16 appearances this season.

Anthony Rieber at Newsday writes:

Scott Schoeneweis was not only not booed yesterday when he came off the mound after a successful outing, he was actually cheered. It’s quite a turnaround for the reliever, who was booed at the home opener during pregame introductions.”

…i must admit that i didn’t notice just how good schoeneweis has been this year, as most of what i hear is about who the fans are booing, and how the bats have been slumping…however, at the game yesterday, scott got a very nice welcome from the fans when he entered, so i’m glad someone’s paying attention…

Buzz: Minor Leaguer To Start

by Regis Courtemanche on May 12th, 2008 at 9:35 am

Prior to yesterday’s game, Willie Randolph told reporters that the team will likely need to call upon a minor leaguer to start Wednesday’s game against the Nationals.

However, if today’s game is postponed due to rain, a new pitcher will not be needed, as today’s starter will pitch Tuesday, and so on.  Then, Johan Santana will likely start against the Yankees in the Bronx on Friday.

According to the Daily News, citing a ‘source’, regardless of rain today, Mike Pelfrey will pitch on regular rest on Thursday, and Santana will pitch Friday against the Yankees.

…from what i have heard, since Jorge Sosa is not an option, the likes of Adam Bostick, Tony Armas Jr., Claudio Vargas, or Brian Stokes could be called up to start on wednesday…

Health: Castillo’s Quad

by Regis Courtemanche on May 12th, 2008 at 9:25 am

Luis Castillo left Sunday’s game after the fifth inning with what the team called ‘left-quad discomfort.’

Castillo, as quoted by the New York Post:

“It’s tight.  I want to see what happens (today)…When I run to third base, I felt it tighten up and I had to leave the game.  I don’t think it is (serious), but I don’t know if I’ll be in the lineup (today).”

Following the game, Randolph told reporters that Castillo’s injury did not seem serious, adding, “but we’ll see.”

…when castillo is questionable, keep him reserved in all fantasy leagues until further notice…although he is resilient, the injuries just keep coming…

Stat: The Carlos and Carlos Show

by Regis Courtemanche on May 12th, 2008 at 9:06 am

In the three game series against the Reds, Carlos Beltran and Carlos Delgado were a combined 10 for 21 and each raised their overall batting averages by around 20 points.

Carlos Delgado extended his hitting streak to nine games and is batting .353 over this stretch.

Beltran, on their recent resurgence:

“We were expecting this to happen, and finally it happened…It’s good that we get hot at the right time.”

…it was a matter of time before beltran finally broke out, and he did it in a big way…i must admit that delgado’s struggles had me a bit more worried, but for now it is great to see him hitting the ball well again…i’m stating the obvious, but for this team to succeed, their big bats need to step up and stay up…it’s great that Ryan Church has been so consistent this year, and the team would be much worse off without him, but just saying that scares me…there is no way the team will succeed if he has to continue to carry them…good to see carlos y carlos back to form…

Read: Who Is Oliver Perez?

by Regis Courtemanche on May 12th, 2008 at 8:46 am

Yesterday, Oliver Perez pitched pitched strongly for five innings but gave up three runs in the sixth. He matched his season high of eight strikeouts as well in the Mets’ win.

After the game, Willie Randolph had this to say:

“Ollie is still relatively young in a lot of ways. His stuff is good, but it’s like someone trying to harness a lot of that talent. He gets out of his arm slot and just tries to invent things…The beauty of Ollie is he competes. He might drive you a little nuts every once in a while, but he competes. When he starts to realize that you’re going to be a lot more consistent staying within your pattern, I think he’ll be more consistent.”

Perez, notes:

“For us, the starters, we need to keep the team in the game…Guys are starting to hit the ball, and that’s why we can win games.”

…i love how simple oliver’s post-game interviews are…pitchers need to pitch well, and hitters need to hit…genius…

For More on Perez, check out the Bergen Record, the New York Post, and the Daily News.

…as i have said before, i think perez will be up and down all year as he continues to mature as a pitcher…i think yesterday’s game was a perfect microcosm of how dominant, and how shaky perez can be…i just hope the dominant side rears its head more often…

Links: Twins, Heil-O-Meter and Anniversaries

by Regis Courtemanche on May 12th, 2008 at 8:25 am

Over at Hot Foot, Gary Grund, who has changed his avatar to Guiseppe Franco, takes an early look at how the prospects that the Mets dealt for Johan Santana are doing for the Twins.

Meanwhile, Greg, at Faith and Fear in Flushing celebrates his “anniversary” and describes why he left yesterday’s game early.

…that’s why i always stay until the end, but in this case, good for you greg…

Mets Walkoffs also celebrates the anniversary of the Mets’ first walkoff win which happened on May 12, 1962.

And finally, the always entertaining Metstradamus welcomes back Carlos Beltran and Keith Hernandez. He also updated his Heil-O-Meter which has now swung to the favorable side.

…to greg’s point, i was at the game yesterday and had no idea what had happened in regards to the reds batting out of order until a kid in front of me who was listening to WFAN gave the update…just another example of how you never know what will happen in a game…
