by Mike Nichols

The Game:

Weather-permitting, the Mets (19-16) will begin their four-game series versus the Nationals (15-23) tonight at Shea Stadium, starting at 7:10 pm.

The Lineup:

The Pitchers:

RHP Nelson Figueroa (2-2, 4.81 ERA) toes the rubber for the Mets. In his last start on May 6, Figueroa earned a loss allowing five runs on eight hits while walking four and striking out three over 5.0 IP. Opponents are hitting .164 (9-for-55) in Figueroa’s first time through the lineup. In his last and only career start versus the Nationals on April 17, Figueroa allowed two runs on two hits and two walks and striking out six over 7.0 IP earning a no-decision.
LHP Odalis Perez (0-3, 3.43 ERA) takes the hill for the Nationals. Perez received a no-decision in his last start on May 7 versus the Astros allowing three tuns on five hits while walking two and striking out three over 5.0 IP. Perez has allowed three earned runs or less in seven of his eight starts this season. Perez is 4-6 with a 3.93 ERA in 17 career games, 10 starts, versus the Mets.

Notes:

Moises Alou is batting .368 (7-for-19) and his reached base in all six games since returning from the disabled list. He is batting .375 (6-for-16) with 1 2B and 1 RBI in his career versus Perez.

Carlos Beltran is batting .455 (5-for-11) with 2 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR and 8 RBI during the Mets current homestand.

The Mets are 12-7 (4-1 against the Nationals) versus the National League East this season.

Lastings Milledge
is batting .154 with 2 2B in his last four games.

Wil Nieves is 11-for-31 (.419) in his last 12 games. He is batting .292 (7-for-24) versus right-handed pitching this season.

The Nationals are 4-14 when their opponent scores first, but 11-8 when hey score first.

Lets score first then!

CaseStreet May 12, 2008 at 6:18 pm

Will Wags let Figgy use his luxury box? Maybe having his family at the game is why Figgy does better at home.

stellar May 12, 2008 at 6:21 pm

“Lastings Milledge is batting .154 with 2 2B in his last four games.”

Four games? Really? Why are we using such a small sample size?

bvaz May 12, 2008 at 6:25 pm

he’s batting .252 with a HR and 11 RBI for the year. he has 26 Ks in 135 ABs.

how’s that sample for you?

deloid May 12, 2008 at 7:25 pm

I was a pro trade (and what a great trade it was) but I still which the best for Milledge. I’m not certain he can make it as an outfielder but he could be a tremendous 1st baseman since he is quick and athletic.

His batting should get better with time (as his arrogance declines).

Massey May 12, 2008 at 6:27 pm

He’s .000/1.000/1.000 in his last 1 plate appearances. Let’s hope he can’t keep up that pace, or the Mets will be in trouble!

Senator Jesus Braunschweiger May 12, 2008 at 6:23 pm

Will cold weather = cold bats? You couldn’t pay me $16 million to play tonight. Move this team to PR or the Dominican until May.

ToastyJoe May 12, 2008 at 6:24 pm

“They’re all corrupt out here, at least this one don’t make any bones about it.”

Senator Jesus Braunschweiger May 12, 2008 at 6:27 pm

Brilliant. Toasty, you were involved in the Bay of Pigs?

ToastyJoe May 12, 2008 at 6:35 pm

“Involved”? That was my idea.

gipper91375 May 12, 2008 at 6:41 pm

Poor follow through.

Tina May 12, 2008 at 7:46 pm

Dude, it’s 5/12/08.

stickguy May 12, 2008 at 6:24 pm

Good luck out there Moises. Try not to hurt yourself!

I assume Pagan is available, but Castillo is activve but not available? Hope they make it until Wednesday so they can make a move!

although if Castillo goes on the DL for Bostick, they will still be shorthanded…

bvaz May 12, 2008 at 6:30 pm

it’s a very interesting week as they need a starter wednesday, they have Wise JIC and they will need a DH this weekend.

if castillo needs a few days, they will need to DL him because they need a DH this weekend. not easy to manage the roster given these double headers and the games in an AL park. just a very weird short term period.

Massey May 12, 2008 at 6:38 pm

Bostick just needs to wear a Sosa jersey and disguise and pitch while Sosa hides in the clubhouse. Wise should wear a Heilman jersey and disguise. I’m sure that will work.

KinersKornerman May 12, 2008 at 6:41 pm

is that you, Bobby V.?

Massey May 12, 2008 at 6:56 pm

shhhh….you’ll blow my cover again

KinersKornerman May 12, 2008 at 7:03 pm

LOL, get a better fake stache this time.

Captsehorn May 12, 2008 at 6:35 pm

The Mets are on the precipice starting tonight….they can take 3 of 4 from the Nats and go to Yankee stadium on a roll, or we can have more of the “same old, same old”.

What say you? Hot streak or .500′ish?

ToastyJoe May 12, 2008 at 6:36 pm

As Little Carmine would say, the Mets are on the precipice of an enormous crossroads.

Metdamage May 12, 2008 at 6:49 pm

5-2 this week. The charge to 1st place begins.

KinersKornerman May 12, 2008 at 6:58 pm

I don’t care about the standing any more. 1st place matters only on Sept 29th.

stone11375 May 12, 2008 at 6:41 pm

when are we gonna get to see lo duca in a nats uniform?

endy.marlon.fan May 12, 2008 at 6:42 pm

aw…”Figgy and Wags”

they should have their own t.v show
with wacky hi-jinks and stuff, figgys family could go visit wags and his allpacas in virginia, and get real excited about things.
and wags can go to coney and eat some kool man, get nathans fries, and get pissed off.
…….

Koko May 12, 2008 at 6:43 pm

probably about the same time we see El Duque in a Mets uniform again.

Roach2 May 12, 2008 at 6:42 pm

I really prefer to have Easley in the 2 hole….maybe it’s because i see Delgado somewhere other than the 7 slot

gometzies_18 May 12, 2008 at 6:44 pm

Hell Yeah! AROD is gonna miss the Subway Series this weekend. I don’t care about “oh, if we don’t beat them at full strength then the Yanks will just make excuses”

Who Cares? I would rather beat the Yanks short handed than loose to them full strengh (Not that I’m saying we would loose…I mean their pitching is a legitimate joke) GO METS!

gipper91375 May 12, 2008 at 6:51 pm

Lose = to not win a game or contest; or, to misplace an object.

Loose = not tight.

I weep for the future.

KinersKornerman May 12, 2008 at 6:54 pm

is it worth booing bad spelling?

gipper91375 May 12, 2008 at 6:56 pm

The lose/loose thing is a pet peeve of mine on Metsblog because it is so disturbingly rampant.

Metdamage May 12, 2008 at 6:57 pm

Yes, then gometzies_18 will perform better next time out.

KinersKornerman May 12, 2008 at 7:00 pm

Gip, could you also explain the chose/choose thing. I can never chose the right one.

gipper91375 May 12, 2008 at 7:15 pm

Your defense of ignorance is inexplicable.

KinersKornerman May 12, 2008 at 7:20 pm

just trying to lighten it up a little. No offense intended.

cb32 May 12, 2008 at 7:21 pm

Don’t worry, go_metzies18 just needs to get into a little bit of a rhythm. He is just pressing, he has spelled correctly before, he’ll find his rhythm.

KinersKornerman May 12, 2008 at 7:27 pm

yeah, I trust go_metzies18
Nobody knows my posters better than I do.

gipper91375 May 12, 2008 at 7:32 pm

My gut said that gometzies_18 was going to come through in that spot. He’s got to execute his spelling better that that. I mean, that’s a basic, little-league type concept. We’re gonna do some their/they’re/there drills with him in a side session to get him back in the groove. He’ll come around. I trust my guys. And my gut.

NY Cuban May 12, 2008 at 6:49 pm

I like this lineup. I think we’ll be ok. Lets go Mets!

Metdamage May 12, 2008 at 6:55 pm

Red Sox DFA’d Julian Tavarez. Anyone interested?

KinersKornerman May 12, 2008 at 7:01 pm

is he related to Frank Tavarez?

dykstraw May 12, 2008 at 7:01 pm

i have tix for tonight but i am not dragging myself to sit in the frozen tundra of the upper deck

NY Cuban May 12, 2008 at 7:30 pm

Me neither…I wimped out. Plus it would have been cold for my 2 year old.

Metdamage May 12, 2008 at 7:05 pm

Did anyone notice the Met lineup being announced with the names in pink on the shea scoreboard?

I take it that someone has decided the Mets hit better with some form of pink on or around the players.

If they win tonight I will wear a pink and white David Wright jersey to shea tomorrow night.

jcervone7 May 12, 2008 at 7:05 pm

I don’t envy the outfielders in this game. Hopefully Figgy can keep the Nats on the ground.

Metdamage May 12, 2008 at 7:11 pm

Agreed. Someone will get a HR off a routine flyball because of the 40mph winds.

the Straw May 12, 2008 at 7:10 pm

is it really that cold? has no one been to Giants stadium in december….THATS COLD!

domosnacks5 May 12, 2008 at 7:13 pm

i see the mets groundkeepers took a page out of the Nats’ groundkeepers playbook by putting our logo on the back of the mound

skylog May 12, 2008 at 7:13 pm

anyone watching on mlb.tv? does it just look awful to me?

m00kie May 12, 2008 at 7:16 pm

the colors seem extra bright tonight.

gipper91375 May 12, 2008 at 7:18 pm

Looks normal on Extra Innings. Pony up and get the Mets on real TV! ;-)

m00kie May 12, 2008 at 7:20 pm

have to say I enjoyed the free preview of that this year, but it doesn’t fit the budget, and I like to watch the games at work and have access to the archive so I can go back and watch games I missed…i will say the dvr really speeds up a baseball game!!

gipper91375 May 12, 2008 at 7:24 pm

Definitly love the DVR combined with the Extra Innings package. Isn’t the cost only about $50 more than MLB.tv? I suppose you lose the at-work option, though if you do just Extra Innings and not MLB.tv.

skylog May 12, 2008 at 7:39 pm

as much as i would love to, i am a poor college student. it is about 100.00 more, at least where i am. it would actually be even more as i would have to upgrade my cable plan. it is hard for me to justify this expense as is, but i will, as i have the past few seasons, contemplate it some time next march.

gipper91375 May 12, 2008 at 10:24 pm

Oh, I feel you, I was a poor collgege student, briefly rich and young working in the city, then a poor grad student….now not worried about cash. At least the MLB.tv thing is relatively reasonable.

m00kie May 12, 2008 at 7:14 pm

that was dale not chip

baseballshell May 12, 2008 at 9:15 pm

haha, I was yelling at the tv he was wrong too. Easy way to remember it: nose reD = Dale, black nose = Chip. It’s ok, they can be up on their baseball facts and I can be up on the Disney facts.

gipper91375 May 12, 2008 at 7:16 pm

Nights like this (and the sad, poor attendance at Johan’s start this weekend) are why nobody should kvetch about the reduced seating capacity at Citi Field.

cb32 May 12, 2008 at 7:23 pm

Poor attendance at Johan’s start? I was there, it was packed.

gipper91375 May 12, 2008 at 7:26 pm

There were swaths of empty seats in the mezz, UD and, sadly even the orange/field seats. There were multiple comments about it here on the blog.

CLYONS May 12, 2008 at 7:36 pm

nope man there were 53,000+ at johans start

Metdamage May 12, 2008 at 7:17 pm

The evil empire is in the park.

Metdamage May 12, 2008 at 7:20 pm

I’d rather the Reyes ESPN commercial than anything featuring Jeter

KinersKornerman May 12, 2008 at 7:21 pm

Speaking of evil empire, I noticed Guisseppe France now has his commercials on the YES network. Look out ESPN..you are next!!

KinersKornerman May 12, 2008 at 7:25 pm

France = Franco but you probably guessed that.

gipper91375 May 12, 2008 at 7:33 pm

Ew, you were watching YES? Ick.

KinersKornerman May 12, 2008 at 7:39 pm

I was drunk and confused

KinersKornerman May 12, 2008 at 7:28 pm

Beltran !!!!!

IsiahRandolph May 12, 2008 at 7:29 pm

marlins up 2-0.

nats average 3 runs a game… woof!

Metdamage May 12, 2008 at 7:30 pm

A 2 out run? Is this the Mets?

NY Cuban May 12, 2008 at 7:31 pm

I don’t know, but it looks like the same old Delgado.

IsiahRandolph May 12, 2008 at 7:33 pm

same OLD delgado

darkstar73 May 12, 2008 at 7:33 pm

hearsay! I won’t consider Delgado “back” until he doesn’t ever strike out again!

Metdamage May 12, 2008 at 7:36 pm

Delgado did get 2 low strike calls that really killed his AB. Keep in mind the man is hitting .353 in the last 9 games!!!!

NY Cuban May 12, 2008 at 7:33 pm

DELGADO IS GARBAGE…FIRST THE K, THEN THE ERROR….THATS A GIFT OF A HOP…

The Glider May 12, 2008 at 7:35 pm

It wasn’t an error, the ump blew the call.

NY Cuban May 12, 2008 at 7:46 pm

Maybe it was a blown call, but was there reason to make that play close? Some of you people really can never accept criticism.

KinersKornerman May 12, 2008 at 7:37 pm

Figgy got lucky there…that’s a 3 run homer without the wind.

CLYONS May 12, 2008 at 7:42 pm

but guess what pal…the winds there so no worries

KinersKornerman May 12, 2008 at 7:46 pm

it’s all good, brother

KinersKornerman May 12, 2008 at 7:38 pm

umps are killing us this inning.

IsiahRandolph May 12, 2008 at 7:39 pm

Delgrandma

Metdamage May 12, 2008 at 7:44 pm

One strikeout and going .353 2HR 4DBLS 6RBI in the last nine games is worthless.

Quality reasoning there. Give the guy a break, he fought back from .192 for crying out loud.

IsiahRandolph May 12, 2008 at 7:45 pm

theres no justification for .192. especially after last year

Metdamage May 12, 2008 at 7:54 pm

No justification? This is sports!!!! Have you been watching? Ok so then there is no justification for Cano and Giambi struggling after last year but they
are. There is no justification for Barry Zito being terrible but he is.

This is sports. This not mathematics. David wright could lose it all and no one would know how to justify it.

CLYONS May 12, 2008 at 7:42 pm

does anyone understand how well easily just hit that ball?

Steve in DC May 12, 2008 at 7:42 pm

Castillo!

KinersKornerman May 12, 2008 at 7:42 pm

nice work Damian. Castillo haters should be here in about 30 seconds.

MainStMets May 12, 2008 at 7:43 pm

fast ball up, d ease is crushing!

Metdamage May 12, 2008 at 7:46 pm

Easley should be tested. As should Rick Ankiel.

IsiahRandolph May 12, 2008 at 7:50 pm

the mets give up a lot of hits to pitchers

Nate W. May 12, 2008 at 7:56 pm

At least they dont walk them, Mets pitchers have been getting a nice amount of walks lately.

MainStMets May 12, 2008 at 7:51 pm

easley is just an excellent high fastball hitter, he crushed one to left last year thats wouldve hit citi field

Nate W. May 12, 2008 at 7:52 pm

How did the Nats score without a hit in the first?

I was in a meeting and missed it.

Dafatone80 May 12, 2008 at 7:54 pm

Reach on Delgado error (replay showed the guy was out, Delgado managed to make two bad plays, misplayed the ball, then made a bad throw.) Walk. Runners move over on a groundout, then a sac fly.

Nate W. May 12, 2008 at 7:55 pm

TY

Nate W. May 12, 2008 at 7:54 pm

…make that the 2nd

KinersKornerman May 12, 2008 at 7:57 pm

homeplate ump is missing all sorts of strikes.

IsiahRandolph May 12, 2008 at 7:59 pm

first run scores bc of an error. second run scores bc the opposing pitchers gets a leadoff single. meet the mets, greet the mets!

metsfan42793 May 12, 2008 at 7:59 pm

what happened to nelson. it seems as if he lost his touch that he had in the beginnnig of the year. im starting to get worried about him

IsiahRandolph May 12, 2008 at 8:02 pm

honestly, what did you expect? hes a career journeyman. 9-19 with a career 4.67 era

i respect the guy tho. hes gritty

Dafatone80 May 12, 2008 at 8:04 pm

He’s… not all that good?

He’s been great for us so far, and I’m not suggesting we yank him out of the rotation right away. But he’ll most likely come down to earth a little.

I like all the suggestions to make him our long man in the pen, especially when (if?) pedro returns, or if bostick or claudio vargas end up pitching significantly in the majors. Or if we get Freddy Garcia.

crclark79 May 12, 2008 at 8:14 pm

I also like the idea of making him the long reliever

Metdamage May 12, 2008 at 7:59 pm

Figgy needs to lay off his slider the Nationals are on it

ABQMetsFan May 12, 2008 at 8:02 pm

It’s not your night when the Nats are on anything

KinersKornerman May 12, 2008 at 8:01 pm

How did Milledge miss that hanging slider?

Metdamage May 12, 2008 at 8:04 pm

He was fooled. He swung like he was looking for a fastball thinking Figgy wouldn’t throw a slider on a 3-2 count. But all Figgy threw was sliders save one fastball on the corner which he should use more.

KinersKornerman May 12, 2008 at 8:06 pm

That’s it. Thank you.

Metdamage May 12, 2008 at 8:11 pm

I fancy myself as the Keith Hernandez of the blog. LOL

MainStMets May 12, 2008 at 8:02 pm

wow, the mics are she are either insanely good, or theres so few people there, but you can here the nats bench cheering for their hitters like its a softball game

still sweet to see blastings strike out

ninohernes May 12, 2008 at 8:03 pm

Gotta love those shotgun mics!

IsiahRandolph May 12, 2008 at 8:03 pm

why do mets fans harbor any negative feelings about milledge? he busted his butt with the mets and played really well last season. he got traded! he didnt willingly leave the team

KinersKornerman May 12, 2008 at 8:05 pm

IR, I was wondering the same thing. I hope he does well…against the Phillies, Braves and Marlins.

metsfan42793 May 12, 2008 at 8:06 pm

milledge was a disgrace to the organization. we gave him a chance but he just made stupid decisions and dumb comments.

KinersKornerman May 12, 2008 at 8:08 pm

C’mon, he was at Shea for less than a season. Disgrace is a bit much, considering he didn’t do steroids or get arrested for DWI.

IsiahRandolph May 12, 2008 at 8:08 pm

like….??

IsiahRandolph May 12, 2008 at 8:09 pm

last time i checked, darryl strawberry did a couple of bad things, yet most mets fans love him and sny even hired him. why the double standard?

gipper91375 May 12, 2008 at 8:28 pm

Um, because LMillz is no Darryl. Also LMillz trashed the Mets in the offseason.

metsfan42793 May 12, 2008 at 8:03 pm

it seems that a lot of pitchers on the mets rely on a certain type of pitch and teams are starting to pound the pitching. perez- fastball, heilman- changeup, sosa and figgy- slider

Metdamage May 12, 2008 at 8:09 pm

7 of the 12 pitchers throw sliders. The bullpen looks so similar to the starters.

MainStMets May 12, 2008 at 8:05 pm

eh to me its more of the assorted comments he had for the org. in the offseason/spring training

endy.marlon.fan May 12, 2008 at 9:09 pm

i predict with 2 men on, delgado steps to the plate with that scared look in his eyes, swings at the first pitch, then hits into the shift, right to the second baseman….

oh wait, he just did that last inning, my bad.

NY Cuban May 12, 2008 at 8:07 pm

I love Keith and Gary cracking on Little League. At least I’m not the only one who hates the rah-rah…

MudvilleNine May 12, 2008 at 8:08 pm

Seen that more when I was coaching high school against Brooklyn teams.

ABQMetsFan May 12, 2008 at 8:08 pm

Figgy sticking back to the Nats dugout. Hopefully he’ll pitch with a purpose now and shut them out the rest of the way. Here’s to wishful thinking.

IsiahRandolph May 12, 2008 at 8:12 pm

here is why delgado will not be a useful contributor, and this will be the explanation eventually adopted by mets fans. delgado has a huge swing- with his age, he has lost a lot of bat speed and therefore struggles to make contact. earlier in his career, he could take that huge swing and still make contact. he has yet to shorten his swing, and i dont expect his bat speed to quicken unless he goes to a party at jose cansecos house

ABQMetsFan May 12, 2008 at 8:15 pm

I hear Roger Clemens is in charge of entertainment at that party

KinersKornerman May 12, 2008 at 8:17 pm

Looks like Perez has him fooled big time. He needs to take that outside pitch.

Gasface77 May 12, 2008 at 8:13 pm

I wish Alou would stop playing so hard and hustling. He is going to get hurt out there. He looks like a 25 year old but you know he could break any minute.

Metdamage May 12, 2008 at 8:14 pm

All the runs are off two out hits. A great sign going forward.

ABQMetsFan May 12, 2008 at 8:15 pm

yeah. lots of that going on lately

Nate W. May 12, 2008 at 8:16 pm

btw, Tony Armas Jr. is pitching tonight for New Orleans, so scratch him off the list of options to start on Wednesday.

KinersKornerman May 12, 2008 at 8:17 pm

Looks like Bostick is the choice for Wed.

Koko May 12, 2008 at 8:19 pm

Stop it Figgy!!!

Booooooooo. . . .

Metdamage May 12, 2008 at 8:20 pm

Hey Willie can we put the Wheel on?

Nate W. May 12, 2008 at 8:21 pm

tonight for St. Lucie, Dylan Owen is working on 5 shutout innings, 7 K’s and for Savannah Steven Cleto has done exactly the same.

both teams are in 0-0 games…

IsiahRandolph May 12, 2008 at 8:21 pm

jesus christ

IsiahRandolph May 12, 2008 at 8:22 pm

MOTHER F man… the nationals average 3 runs a game. this is too much for me

Nate W. May 12, 2008 at 8:22 pm

well its was a nice first couple starts from Figueroa, but its become apparent that he is not a big league starter. It was a nice story while it lasted… time for someone new.

KinersKornerman May 12, 2008 at 8:23 pm

Figgy, with the Oliver Perez imitation

IsiahRandolph May 12, 2008 at 8:25 pm

if he was imitating ollie, the score would be 6-3 nats. i look to look at the runs a pitcher gives up vs the earned runs he gives up. the disparity indicates how well the pitcher responds to crisis. last year, ollie gave up 70 earned runs and 90 runs.

Metdamage May 12, 2008 at 8:23 pm

Figgy is determined to give the Nationals every opportunity to beat him.

MudvilleNine May 12, 2008 at 8:24 pm

If we didnt know better it would look like Figgy was throwing the game.

IsiahRandolph May 12, 2008 at 8:25 pm

nelson donaghy?

Nate W. May 12, 2008 at 8:25 pm

He’s really going after that ND with everything he’s got!

MainStMets May 12, 2008 at 8:30 pm

haha good to see that lo duca is up to his old tricks lol

fiesty old guy him, reminds me of jake taylor from major league

KinersKornerman May 12, 2008 at 8:36 pm

post-roid rage

IsiahRandolph May 12, 2008 at 8:31 pm

teixeira left game 1 of the braves double header with back spasms.

KinersKornerman May 12, 2008 at 8:36 pm

Vlad Guerrerro had bad spasms too the year he was a free agent. I’m not complaining…just saying that’s no big deal.

Metdamage May 12, 2008 at 8:32 pm

I really dig the behind the plate camera shot.

ninohernes May 12, 2008 at 8:37 pm

The director (guy calling the shots) Bill Webb is fantastic! He calls excellent shots, and his cameramen are really on top of their area of responsibility. I have rarely if ever seen him call a bad shot.

IsiahRandolph May 12, 2008 at 8:34 pm

the umps love us

KinersKornerman May 12, 2008 at 8:37 pm

Hey Blue, you’re missing a great game, here.

Dafatone80 May 12, 2008 at 8:37 pm

You know, I generally don’t mind Willie’s not arguing close calls.

But he has to go out and throw an absolute tantrum next time Jose gets screwed on a call.

That’s what, the 3rd time he’s been called out wrong on steals? He’s now 12 for 16. Three of those four caught stealings have been mistakes.

A few bad calls are what sent Jose tailspinning last year. Say what you want about how he has to mature and all, Willie should be fighting for him

backinbusiness May 12, 2008 at 8:39 pm

he looked out to me…

sheahey81 May 12, 2008 at 8:39 pm

He was out.

Dafatone80 May 12, 2008 at 8:40 pm

Oh, well then, okay.

I’m listening on radio, and Hagin and Rose were more or less jumping up and down calling him safe.

Nothing to see here. Carry on.

KinersKornerman May 12, 2008 at 8:42 pm

Not your fault. Hagin missed the call. I got both radio and TV on.

JNGordon May 12, 2008 at 9:35 pm

I have to tell you that Hagin calls everything the same. Homeruns sound like routine fly balls until the go over the wall. He needs some Red Bull or something

IsiahRandolph May 12, 2008 at 8:45 pm

this team scores 3 friggin runs a game. you have to be kidding me. and i guarantee you the marlins win again

The Glider May 12, 2008 at 8:40 pm

Did Walter Alston ever throw a complete tantrum? Did you ever see Joe Torre throw a complete tantrum?

Throwing a tantrum like some kind of maniac is stupid if you’re not that kind of person. Then it comes off as phony and you really lose your players.

Dafatone80 May 12, 2008 at 8:44 pm

If Jose wasn’t upset, then I have no problems.

backinbusiness May 12, 2008 at 8:42 pm

that description of the schoe pitching without a tendon (!) was disgusting and makes me feel at least a tiny bit bad for hating him so much last year.

KinersKornerman May 12, 2008 at 8:43 pm

Kevin Burkhart, investigative journalist, just cracked the Showenweis caper.

KinersKornerman May 12, 2008 at 8:44 pm

Cripes Figgy, can we stop walking the 7-hitter EVERY time.

KinersKornerman May 12, 2008 at 8:45 pm

Jesus Freaking Flores

cyclone May 12, 2008 at 8:47 pm

Odalis freaking Perez…

KinersKornerman May 12, 2008 at 8:46 pm

Who pulls Figgy out here?

IsiahRandolph May 12, 2008 at 8:46 pm

odalis perez is 2-2. nelson figueroa, you just got yourself demoted to the minors. i dont want to see this pitcher again

Metdamage May 12, 2008 at 8:46 pm

Well, we could see coming all night.

IsiahRandolph May 12, 2008 at 8:47 pm

SIX RUNS TO THE GOD DAMN NATIONALS. THIS TEAM SCORES 3 RUNS A GAME. god im having memories of the nationals offense from last september

The Glider May 12, 2008 at 8:47 pm

Walks will kill ya. Figgy’s been playing with fire all game. 6-3, ugh.

HITorDIE25 May 12, 2008 at 8:47 pm

Figgy..figgy …figgy…we have a great spot for you in AAA. How about we try Armas jr.?

cyclone May 12, 2008 at 8:48 pm

I think the love affair with Nelson Figueroa is coming to an end ….

the Straw May 12, 2008 at 8:49 pm

this may be the end of the Figgy era.

IsiahRandolph May 12, 2008 at 8:49 pm

i cant wait to hear this guy get booed off the field. thats your last memory with the mets.

backinbusiness May 12, 2008 at 8:53 pm

That’s disgusting. You can’t wait to hear the guy whose life dream has been pitching for the Mets, has really overperformed to date, is clearly trying, and until this inning had a tie game, booed off the field?

He’s not a great pitcher. That should be obvious given that he is 33 without a regular job. He’s done as well as could be expected and he is the last Met I would boo for a bad outing.

SantanaCYYOung May 12, 2008 at 8:49 pm

i think its time to end the figueroa experiment

dr jones May 12, 2008 at 8:50 pm

So this is going to be very interesting.. Lets see what team comes out for the rest of this game. The Mail it in Mets or the gritty group we all know they could be. Now I don’t care if they win or not, but they better go out there and try.

IsiahRandolph May 12, 2008 at 8:50 pm

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoo

cyclone May 12, 2008 at 8:54 pm

This got a laugh out of me, thanks Isiah…

cyclone May 12, 2008 at 8:52 pm

I’ll take the Mail it In Mets for 200, Alex…

Hope I’m wrong, but I seen it too many times this year.

MudvilleNine May 12, 2008 at 8:53 pm

May I ask how you will know whether they’re trying or not?

dr jones May 12, 2008 at 8:59 pm

that a good question mud… I guess i could be a matter of perspective,, but we do have a constant. They deff mailed the second game of the double header against pitts. So far their looking good. Just don’t want to see lazy baseball. Errors and giving away at bats..

HITorDIE25 May 12, 2008 at 8:50 pm

His stuff just isnt that good…and hasnt been for 4 starts. Honestly he has got lucky…really lucky.

backinbusiness May 12, 2008 at 8:51 pm

Until this inning, Figgy kept us in the game. He “limited the damage.” He’s just the 5th starter and frankly neither Perez nor Pelfrey, on average, have been better than Figgy on average.

This isn’t the guy to boo for all of those who claim they are booing “no effort” guys. This guy is all effort.

He’s just not a great pitcher.

Koko May 12, 2008 at 8:53 pm

So you think guys like Delgado, Scho, Heilman, etc don’t put out effort?

Please. They put out a lot of effort and still get booed. They have struggles as many MLB players do or they are just seeing their skills fade. It doesn’t mean they aren’t putting effort out there.

backinbusiness May 12, 2008 at 8:55 pm

No, I totally agree with you. I was just alluding to all those who CLAIM they are booing “no effort” when they are really booing “bad performance.”

Koko May 12, 2008 at 8:59 pm

Sorry my bad then. I agree.

gipper91375 May 12, 2008 at 9:50 pm

Or booing “boredom.”

The Glider May 12, 2008 at 8:51 pm

Aaron Heilman for the 5th spot?????

Metdamage May 12, 2008 at 8:53 pm

No.

HITorDIE25 May 12, 2008 at 8:53 pm

stop. Cant get lefties out…and cant even pitch in relief yet…

The Glider May 12, 2008 at 8:55 pm

He’s tired of relieving. He wants to start. He’s got better stuff than any other potential 5th starter and, yes, he can get lefties out with his most excellent change-up.

HITorDIE25 May 12, 2008 at 8:58 pm

That no names like Scott Speizo and Kelly johnson have killed us on….thanks for proving my point

HITorDIE25 May 12, 2008 at 9:00 pm

PS he doesnt have a 3rd pitch. SLider sucks. You cant start with two pitches

The Glider May 12, 2008 at 10:02 pm

Pelfrey starts with only 1 pitch!

SantanaCYYOung May 12, 2008 at 8:51 pm

does this team know what a winning streak is?

gipper91375 May 12, 2008 at 9:50 pm

Nobody’s with you except Aaron’s momma.

Mets Fan on Wall St. May 12, 2008 at 8:53 pm

I was at Figgy’s first start against the Brewers and was pleasantly surprised he wasn’t another Chan Ho Park or Brian Lawrence right out of the gate. But ever since then he’s been putting on a ton of runners, not getting through innings efficiently an it seems to have gotten progressively worse every start. This afternoon I called him a Houdini-like pitcher…I think his magic trick is up.

ABQMetsFan May 12, 2008 at 8:53 pm

Is this the part of the evening where a sub-par pitcher decides he is Cy Young?

SantanaCYYOung May 12, 2008 at 8:55 pm

i have a feeling they’ll come back in this game. and i haven’t had this feeling since early last year

Koko May 12, 2008 at 8:55 pm

Odalis Perez isn’t sub-par. Maybe par, but not subpar.

cyclone May 12, 2008 at 8:55 pm

Come on Beltran….let’s get it started..

backinbusiness May 12, 2008 at 8:58 pm

By the way, Manny Acta not shutting up his bullpen when they (esp. Dukes, I believe) acting like 10 year old boys is interesting to me.

he likes their youthful enthusiam, that’s why he likes Milledge..

In game poll:
WIth 1 being the least and 10 the most, how much confidence do you have in Sosa coming in in this spot?

backinbusiness May 12, 2008 at 9:04 pm

4

IsiahRandolph May 12, 2008 at 9:06 pm

on a scale of 1 to 10, how confident are you that the mets will lose this game: 8.5

IsiahRandolph May 12, 2008 at 9:04 pm

win one, lose one… win 2, lose 3. win 2, lose 1, win 3, lose 4… the most mediocre team money can buy!

SayItAintSo May 12, 2008 at 9:13 pm

blown out b thte nationals, who just got swept by the marlins!!!

Is this september again???

Oh wait, i forgot, odalis perez is pitching…

Send down figueroa sosa and bring up anyone else who can throw a strike.

MudvilleNine May 12, 2008 at 9:13 pm

Sosa’s pretty much pitching himself out the door.

cyclone May 12, 2008 at 9:14 pm

Why do the Nats play like the 27 Yankees every time they come up against us….

backinbusiness May 12, 2008 at 9:15 pm

or….the mets are 4-1 against the nats this year, but good try!

cyclone May 12, 2008 at 9:17 pm

Oh please, I’m not limiting it to this year…they handled us at the end of last year…

Odalis must be Babe Ruth, that’s his third hit…

SantanaCYYOung May 12, 2008 at 9:14 pm

SayItAintSo May 12, 2008 at 9:16 pm

I GUARANTEE sosa does not get DFAd…

i cant stand his ugly face.. every time he gives up 4 runs, he looks like a little girl on the mound with a puss on his face.. id like to run onto the field and physicall harm him!!!! :)

npanzeca May 12, 2008 at 9:19 pm

This team never does the things it should, Sosa and Figgy will keep on getting run out there and the Bostick game is a sure loss. We will be damn lucky to split this series, pathetic.

npanzeca May 12, 2008 at 9:18 pm

This is unacceptable and one of the reasons Randope must go. We’ll hear the same tired crap after the game and if anyone thinks Sosa is leaving this team you are seriously dreaming. Another typical mail it in performance under Randope, I can’t this anymore.

MudvilleNine May 12, 2008 at 9:20 pm

You keep saying this but you keep coming back

npanzeca May 12, 2008 at 9:22 pm

Hoping for a turnaround but not going to happen with guys like we have and especially Randope. Hey don’t worry Willie, turn the page after getting embarrassed at home by the Nats. Our last 3 home losses have been blowouts and that CAN NOT be tolerated.

Metdamage May 12, 2008 at 9:27 pm

I don’t get how Sosa’s pitching relates to Willie Randolph.

npanzeca May 12, 2008 at 9:38 pm

I don’t think Sosa came into the game on his own, Randope brought him in and is keeping him on this team, he is this years Mota.

andyglass1 May 12, 2008 at 9:28 pm

plus, the added benefit that whatever team picks up sosa gets a dead arm sosa! mwahaha!

andyglass1 May 12, 2008 at 9:26 pm

did any of the monsters in the stands have the audacity to the boo our professionals as they trotted off the field after the sixth inning carnage came to an end ? as long as the guys keep trying you have love the effort.

jimyager May 12, 2008 at 9:35 pm

They lost all heart after that 6th. Those at bats in the bottom looked terrible. Remember that game against the REDS last week that we LOST 12-1? We all said it was one of those games and all teams have them, Well, here is another one of “those games”. The poll that we taken here said that the METS should go 5-2 on this home stand to be a success. Well that means we win the next 3. Im just getting sick and tired of making excuses for this team and watching a blow out game once a week. We should roll over these bums, not the other way around. Oh, well, we will get the Tuesday. (Now I sound like Willie) NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SayItAintSo May 12, 2008 at 9:26 pm

time and time again this happens with this team..
i have not been a FIRE WILLIE guy all year, but come on..

How many times do we have to get BLOWN OUT by HORRIBLE OFFENSES>??????

FIRE PEDERSON

Then FIRE RANDOLPH…

and all you happy go lucky met fans out there, especially the creator of this site, i dont care who manages the team..

my left nut would be better than randolph right about now..

How do you NOT see sosa getting blown out here???

How do you let figueroa stay in when he has NOTHING left…

THis team is PAINFUL to watch.. i am physically in pain, and am done…

1-3 vs the nats, swept by the yankees, and i can give up on th emets in may..

thats my pessimistic prediction…

IsiahRandolph May 12, 2008 at 9:28 pm

cyclone May 12, 2008 at 9:30 pm

didn’t he try that last September, didn’t work out too well if I recall…

ABQMetsFan May 12, 2008 at 9:32 pm

How can this organization spend so much money on players and all we have done this year is hope (let’s hope we take the next 3, let’s hope Sosa has a good outing, let’s hope blah blah blah). Hope is for pretenders.

the Straw May 12, 2008 at 9:31 pm

tru….but Pedro and Johan?!?!!?

Come on I need something here.

NPerez May 12, 2008 at 9:31 pm

Well, with Figueroa starting, you’re always taking the chance of his fluke ending, which is what happened. With Figs’ disaster being followed up by Sosa, you know what to expect..

I’m disappointed, but not surprised. Figs can’t perform well consistently, and Sosa isn’t good enough for this team.

TheIcon May 12, 2008 at 10:22 pm

Wow. A voice of reason. Thanks.

SantanaCYYOung May 12, 2008 at 9:32 pm

wow last year there were so many people on this site preaching calmness and that the team is in first, and we’ll get them tomorrow, etc. etc., and look how last year turned out.

1. why not just leave sosa in there?
2. why bring in sanchez? wasn’t he hurt and its 30 degrees
3. does this team know what a winning streak is?
4. can somebody check when the last time the Mets came back from a defecit of 3 or more after the 5th inning?

skylog May 12, 2008 at 9:32 pm

i will simply echo everyone here. this is embarrassing.

i will save eveyone the rest of my comments, but come on, why can met pitchers never find the zone? this has to be a peterson problem. ALL, think about it, ALL the pitchers are having problems finding the zone. even johan. they come in contact with 3 balls more than an adult film star.

it is one thing to throw it and be beaten, but the whole staff is nibling to death and walking the park. even worse, when they actually manage to get ahead, they just nibble, nibble and lose it. enough.

the Straw May 12, 2008 at 9:33 pm

It just sucks because from the start, it looked like this team would take this one…1 2 3 first for Figgy…mets score in the 1st three innings…you just felt like this should have been a Victory.

WrightsRight May 12, 2008 at 9:33 pm

12-6
1-7
8-3
3-10

So ridiculous. And now Gary is making excuses – cold weather, small crowd, bad team. That’s BS. Suck it up. Have so pride.

Was watching Fran Healy’s show yesterday and his guest was Chase Utley. He is at the ballpark by noon every day watching video of all of the team’s opposing pitchers. Every day. And when he has a bad (or good) at bat, he runs into the videoroom to see what went wrong (or right). I’d like to believe the Mets do the same thing. Would like to believe that.

dr jones May 12, 2008 at 9:34 pm

one thing that becomes more and more apparent is that this team underestimates its competition. They lack a killer instinct and an edge. We’ve seen too many of these types of games already, where the mets either blow them out or we get blown out. I think that speaks volumes about this teams mentality.

IsiahRandolph May 12, 2008 at 9:34 pm

just so you know, the marlins, who were down 8-4 to the reds, are mounting a comeback… its 8-7 after 3 runs in the 8th

IsiahRandolph May 12, 2008 at 9:35 pm

bases loaded 2 outs for the marlins. 8-7

ABQMetsFan May 12, 2008 at 9:38 pm

The Marlins playing well doesn’t worry me that much. There is no way they can keep it up all year long (jinx). What bothers me is that those idiots in Miami will start to think they have a team and pretend that they were there the entire season and deserve a winner.

WrightsRight May 12, 2008 at 9:45 pm

LOL… Just like last year when there was no way those Phillies – all offense, no pitching – could actually win the division. I’ve learned not to underestimate any team. Phils proved that all offense, and just a bit of pitching can win a division (still work to be done to win a championship, but close enough).

ABQMetsFan May 12, 2008 at 9:48 pm

I hear ya man. That’s why I qualified my comment with a “jinx”.

the Straw May 12, 2008 at 9:36 pm

WHY IS SANCHEZ IN THE GAME!!!

IS HE NOT THE SET-UP MAN? WHAT SET UP MAN COMES IN TO THIS GAME AT THIS SPOT?!!??!

USE HEILMAN FOR 2 INNINGS

WHY WASTE SANCHEZ WHO HAS NOT FULLY REGAINED HIS STRENGTH AND SHOULD NOT BE USED WHEN UNNECESSARY.

THIS IS A REALLY REALLY STUPID SPOT TO PUT SANCHEZ IN.

IsiahRandolph May 12, 2008 at 9:38 pm

no reliever knows their role on their. i dont think willie knows their roles either.

rob macowiak is a lefty and due up 2nd in the 8th. do you think willie will bring in wagner to take advantage of the lefty-lefty matchup. at this point, i wouldnt be surprised. this man needs to be fired.

andyglass1 May 12, 2008 at 9:37 pm

do we get another hit the rest of the way or will it be 3 more innings of 1-2-3 ?

IsiahRandolph May 12, 2008 at 9:38 pm

at this point, i know we are going to lose, but i just want to see some runs. show some grit

probably not, but at this point, i don’t even care. what difference would it make.

i just do not get this team.

dykstraw May 12, 2008 at 9:40 pm

didn’t the metsblog poll results show that the majority of metsblog readers felt a 5-2 stand was acceptable?

well, here are the two losses. 3 in a row or bust.

nice drive by wright.

Hubie May 12, 2008 at 9:40 pm

dr jones, do you really think they lost this game tonight b/c they have no killer instinct or they underestimated the Nats. Or did their starting pitcher and middle man go out and stick up the joint.

Also, don’t love Sanchez being bought in tonight either, but its not the end of the world. Sanchez has been lightly used since returning so you mind as well give him an inning tonight.

andyglass1 May 12, 2008 at 9:47 pm

i would have left sosa in there. if he continued to give up tons of runs, then he pretty much seals his fate. maybe at some point he just gets angry, the light bulb goes on and he fights his way out of this mile deep rut. why use other guys tonight and not have them available tomorrow ? if sanchez hurts himself in a blowout during the cold, its really gonna deflate the teams self confidence it they have any left.

way to go wright,,

ninohernes May 12, 2008 at 9:52 pm

Hell yeah Dave!!!!!

David Wright is someone who I admire very much, he is one of my heros. He is dedicated, passionate and always trying to improve himself, and this is something that I respect and admire very much. Even though his bat has been cool lately, we all know that he is a very talented player, he displayed it last year. He is still young, and I am confident that he will be one of the best players baseball has ever seen. Seeing Dave play, and his attitudes toward the game inspires me to excel at what I do. Dave, for my generation, you are a breath of fresh air!!

If I could meet any celebrity (and I have met quite a few in my travels in the audio industry) it would defiantly be Dave. It would be an honor to shake his hand!

Lets go Dave! LETS GO METS!

c.1970 May 12, 2008 at 9:42 pm

“Was watching Fran Healy’s show yesterday and his guest was Chase Utley. He is at the ballpark by noon every day watching video of all of the team’s opposing pitchers. Every day. And when he has a bad (or good) at bat, he runs into the videoroom to see what went wrong (or right). I’d like to believe the Mets do the same thing. Would like to believe that.”

Brilliant point. For example, Mets have been stymied by Arroyo for three tears now. You figure in that timespan, Willie or the coaches would bring out some tapes for the team to study. Gene Michael is scouting the Mets tonight. Anyone from the Mets scouting the Yanks this week?

This game is done. Four game series, including a day game. Would’ve let Figueroa and Sosa mop the entire uninspired slop up.

TheIcon May 12, 2008 at 10:26 pm

Of course someone from the Mets is scouting the Yankees. It’s called advance scouting. That’s the way baseball works.

skylog May 12, 2008 at 9:47 pm

i just don’t understand how sosa keeps getting a pass of sorts. he came in, he did nothing. why not leave him in there, suck up some innings, and leave them some more options the rest of the series?

i know the argument, not leaving a guy in there, getting shelled. WHATEVER. he has been sucking, leave him in. at the very least, he helps the team that way. the team actually benefits in some way.

no attack on wright here, but how many solo shots does this team have? it would nice to have a few more with men on. i am more of a run, attack fan, but a good ole earl weaver three run shot would be nice every now and then.

SayItAintSo May 12, 2008 at 9:59 pm

your hero???hes a baseball player,,

thats why these athletes make so much money, because of idiots like us who call them heros..

miker94 May 12, 2008 at 9:48 pm

how many times has milledge caught a 3rd out popfly and didn’t know how many outs there were? he did it all the time last year and just did it again. i’m so glad he is gone.

skylog May 12, 2008 at 9:50 pm

last rant.

no matter what else happened in this game, you are just not going to win many games giving up 9 hits, 7 walks, 2 hit batters and two errors in seven innings.

too many walks.
not enough getting ahead.
too many pitches.

that should be the team slogan so far this season.

WrightsRight May 12, 2008 at 10:14 pm

much better than “Your Season Has Come”

miker94 May 12, 2008 at 9:50 pm

figures too, the marlins finally lost and we can’t gain a game on them. you’d think it should be a great opportunity for the mets to gain a game, but we get shelled by the nats, so frustrating.

darkstar73 May 12, 2008 at 9:54 pm

yup, season’s over, pack it in folks, not gaining a game on the Marlins in May is a pretty freakin’ big deal, so i’m not sure this team can overcome that.

miker94 May 12, 2008 at 9:56 pm

it is a big deal and it’s people like you who don’t think it is a big deal who were saying, “oh we’re still in first place,” all of last year. look where that got the mets. every opportunity is a big deal and should be siezed when possible. what kind of a fan are you?

darkstar73 May 12, 2008 at 10:03 pm

did you expect this team to never lose to the Nats? games like this happen, WAKE UP, no one said this was going to be a GREAT team, we’re going to have to fight the whole season for the division. You were mislead if you thought we’d walk through the division in 1st place like in 2006. 2006 will not happen again. WAKE UP. It’s comments like yours that make me think fans out there really expected this team to just cruise, to be a great team, to be in 1st all year. Did you actually think that? C’mon, wake up. This isn’t a great team, never was. Realize that baseball is a fight, divisions are RARELY won in May, June, July, RARELY. In ‘06 it was, when a lot of you probably became fans, but that’s not how it works.

miker94 May 12, 2008 at 10:09 pm

don’t question “when” I became a fan. I can assure you that I was cheering on the mets when you were in diapers! And no, I never thought for one second that the mets would run through the division and of course i don’t expect them to win every game against the nats. i simply stated that it’s a shame that we couldn’t pick up a game on the marlins tonight and you jumped all over me, like another uninformed, blind, fool of a fan. losing to the nats is not what has bugged most people on here, it’s the way it happened, and the way it’s been happening all year. all we’re asking for is a little consistency. i know we cant be consistent for the entire season, thats unrealistic, but how about for a 2 week span maybe? we havn’t seen that yet either, and it’s just a shame. it’s my opinion, and i have the right to post that. i didn’t even say anything negative, but you have to put your two cents in when anyone on here says anything you don’t agree with. take it easy pal and just relax.

npanzeca May 12, 2008 at 10:12 pm

And happen, and happen, and happen. The last 3 losses have been blowout losses to 3 horrible teams. You can blow it off all you want, but if this is acceptable to you I don’t know what to tell you. You obviously don’t have anymore fight than Randope or his merry band of gutless millionaires

miker94 May 12, 2008 at 10:17 pm

darkstar73 May 12, 2008 at 10:19 pm

god, you people take this sh*t way too seriously, I made a sarcastic comment to combat some of the absolutely ridiculous fatalistic attitudes around here. Relax, its baseball, this is NOT life. Fact is, people used to come to this blog to talk about baseball, not complain, not whine, not bash, not say the same things over and over and over again. Maybe i’m just fed up with that. I’m as big a fan as anyone here, I don’t need anyone else’s affirmation for that, but yeah, maybe i don’t take it all as seriously as some of you. I’m still willing to be calm when the Mets lose, sue me.

npanzeca May 12, 2008 at 10:27 pm

If we didn’t see the same crap over and over again we wouldn’t have to talk about it over and over again. Its been a year now. I really don’t know how you can be calm when watching a game like this but good for you if you can.

darkstar73 May 12, 2008 at 10:30 pm

i’m not calm when watching it, the Mets losing is frustrating, no matter what, but I don’t let that seep into everything else, including my blog comments, its called controlling your emotions, being rational, realizing (and I know fans like you hate this) its a long season. But whatever, continue on as you were, I’m done.

npanzeca May 12, 2008 at 9:57 pm

Blow off a loss to the Nats, a blowout loss at that if you want to.

the Straw May 12, 2008 at 9:53 pm

At least we didnt LOSE another game on them….but honestly, i really dont care what the Marlins are doing, as long as we arent way behind the phils or braves, its no big deal.

What i dont like is that they remain 1 to 3 games over .500….

They need to go on a streak and get Waaay over the .500 mark.

npanzeca May 12, 2008 at 9:56 pm

Not with this team or manager.

miker94 May 12, 2008 at 9:55 pm

RetireNumber17 May 12, 2008 at 9:56 pm

Figgy gets the loss on this one, but the game wasn’t over until Sosa gave up the four in the sixth.

Joe Smith strikes out the side in the eighth, and he’s the one who’s going down?

Release Sosa, activate Wise, fire Randolph, hire Backman. Stop the madness.

Here they come. Matt Wise is going to take the Mets to the promised land. A lot of people on this board don’t know much about baseball, which is surprising to say the least.

WrightsRight May 12, 2008 at 9:57 pm

i like easley, but please, at least show a bit of patience…i know it’s cold but seriously…

gipper91375 May 12, 2008 at 9:58 pm

Sooo, before the homestand, there was a huge majority of us that voted in Matt’s poll that 5-2 would be the acceptable performance in this 7 game homestand against two craptastic teams. To attain that minimum threshold, the mets will have to win three straight against the Nats.

So,

–Scale of 1-10, what is your confidence level that this team will win 3 straight to attain that 5-2 homestand threshold???

I say 2.5.

npanzeca May 12, 2008 at 10:02 pm

0.0, they have no chance

IsiahRandolph May 12, 2008 at 10:02 pm

if you look at it in terms of probability. we should have a 75% chance of winning game 2 and 4. game 3 is a tossup- ill say we have a 50/50 chance.

the probability that we win the next 3 games is 28% (arbitrary, i know). so ill put my confidence at 2.8

SayItAintSo May 12, 2008 at 10:02 pm

i say split with nats, 1-2 against stankees..

Willie didn’t notice, he’s too busy with:

A.) Editing his resume so he can be bench coach in Boston and get a ring, because he’s a “winner.”

B.) Consulting his gut.

C.) Thinking about how much stronger the pen will be when they send that uppity youngster Smith back down to the minors yet retain Sosa.

D.) Fantasizing about sweet, oh so sweet, Champagne.

E.) All of the above.

NY Cuban May 12, 2008 at 10:13 pm

Ooooh, oooh…I know, I know…

E. All of the above.

Keep drinking the kool aid.. keep buying tickets to watch this crap… keep buying the merchandies, wear your met hat proudly tomorrow..

or we can stop watching until they give us somethign to watch..

but hey, i drink the kool aid too.. its like a train wreck you cant look away from.. i want to see how we DONT make the playoffs this year.

At least cerrone is strating to hurt like the rest of us and admit to it..

hey carlos, we are still the team to beat right???

wow, the couple 1000s that are still in the stadium are cheering pretty good.

KinersKornerman May 12, 2008 at 10:24 pm

Can’t stand using Billy in these situations. He’s a closer, and wants pressure. This is so unnecessary.

stickguy May 12, 2008 at 10:25 pm

THis is one of those games that, IMO, isn’t as systemically bad as it looks from the score. Really, it proved a few things:

1) Figgy isn’t the answer for the rotation. He doesn’t have the stuff to get further than 5, and will still give up some runs by the end. So, better suited to the Sosa (aka the Oliver) role

2) Sosa really does stink, and they should bite the bullet, trade him or eat the money. Send him down, and be done with it. Figgy can fill that role OK.

3) Beltran is looking better.

4) playing games on cold, raw, wet, windy nights really really sucks. DId that way too many times coaching my sons LL team in April and October!

5) Alou is simply amazing. Pray that he sells his soul to the devil (whatever that might be these days!) and stays on the field for the rest of the year.

So yes, this is one of those games you write off and move on. Look at the positive, 12 hits and 2 HRs!

miker94 May 12, 2008 at 10:28 pm

all very good points, still hurts, but they are good points

backinbusiness May 12, 2008 at 10:29 pm

I’m with you, stickguy. And I’m not abandoning Figgy yet, at least for the long man role. He has had major control issues, but he stays in the game. The bats are going. Sometimes a pitcher stinks. Can’t win ‘em all.

Runshouse May 12, 2008 at 10:27 pm

HOORAY FOR UNDERACHIEVING!

When does the apologist post get put up?

NY Cuban May 12, 2008 at 10:33 pm

Well, Cerrone will talk about how its not Willie pitching or hitting. And how its not time to panic yet.

The apologists will blame Omar, or the booing, or the weather, or the earth’s rotation, or some other assinine rationale…

Willie will talk about turning the page, and grinding it out, and the little bumps in the road, and how its early, etc…

stickguy May 12, 2008 at 10:30 pm

ah, figure out if Armas or C. Vargas is most likely to have a run of success and get them up too. Unless Bostick does well and they ride that horse for a while.

dr jones May 12, 2008 at 10:56 pm

We always here things about Veterans not wanting to be encouraged/managed in the dugout. We hear Willie say things like my guys know what they have to do. They know how to turn it on..(Not quoting)

it seems like this team doesn’t know how to make any sort of a comeback. The second they got down big, they stopped working counts and swung at some really bad pitches.

Is there ever a time that the manager or a teammate will refocus the club.. It seems like in most dugouts(not just the mets) that players and managers rarely do things like that. How did baseball get this way? It really defies logic. I was just thinking that in every other team sport I can think of, you have constant interaction between player and coaches. You have adjustments being made and a constant push for guys to play at there best.

I know its a completely different situation but in football and basketball, there is rarely a second that coaches and players aren’t interacting. IMO the Mets need to more of this. Tonight the mets tried to hit the 6 run home run. When bloops bleeders and singles are exactly what we needed..

dr jones May 12, 2008 at 9:34 pm

The one thing that becomes more and more apparent is that this team underestimates its competition. They lack a killer instinct and an edge. We’ve seen too many of these types of games already, where the mets either blow them out or we get blown out. I think that speaks volumes about this teams mentality.

npanzeca May 12, 2008 at 9:40 pm

It relates to the man at the top, the terrible Randope
