For those who know me, you know how shy I am.
So, I did not want to post this.
However, since it involves you, i.e., the Comments Section, as much as it
involves me, I figured you would want to know.
During Saturday night’s game on SNY, Gary Cohen read an on-air promo for MetsBlog.com, after which he and Keith Hernandez had the following exchange:
Hernandez: That is an excellent blog, I must say. Very informative. I always make sure I log on in the morning, and get the scoop.
Cohen: Did you ever read the Comments Section?
Hernandez: Sometimes…after I’ve had the coffee.
Cohen: Those people love you, you know.
Hernandez: Really?
Cohen: Oh, God, yeah.
Hernandez: Well, then I’ll have to start reading the Comments Section (laughing).

Everyone be on your best behavior, you never know when Keith will show up.
Mex is the MAN!
You gals know I’m kidding; I love you.
Hernandez is my favorite player of all time and now he is my favorite announcer of all time!!
My choice for which Met I would want at bat if I really, REALLY needed a hit.
I never booed Keith. Except when he played for the Cardinals…
that is AWESOME
HILARIOUS!!!!!
Seems like “Gary is watching” is even more accurate…
Hi, Gary!
awesome mustache, keith!
Keith, you’re my favorite ball player of all time! Nothing like seeing you come to bat with the game on the line in later innings. I can’t remember how many times you came through while we were screaming in the stands! And those defensive gems!!
Kiss A$$!!!!
haha!
Lets see has been on two World championship teams, 7 or 8 gold gloves at first base One MVP (all be it a shared one) and what a .280 -.290 life time batting average. Considering all the other “average” ball players in the Hall of Fame I think Keith deserves his due.
Retire 17.
Seconded. Retire # 17!!!!!
I agree. It’s about time we gave Mr. Koo his due respect.
LOL.
Seriously, though, the Wilpons could do a much better job of respecting Mets history and the franchise’s great players of the past. I mean, we have three retired numbers after 45+ years of existence (one of which is a joke with Casey).
And, Citi Field will be chock-full of Brooklyn Dodgers and NY (baseball) Giants names/references rather than Mets names/references. Why not respect the long and fun history of their own team?
Let’s start with retiring # 17!
Retire 16, 17, 18?, 31.
As much as we all love Straw, Gooden is the 2nd best player produced by the Mets, to acheive greatness here (Nolan Ryan’s tenure here was the tip of the iceberg in terms of what he accomplished). He was far more important that Darryl was. In the ideal world, both Doc and Straw would have their number retired, but if I had to chose one, its Doc.
how about 8? A hall of famer who spent half of his career as a met and won a championship.
You got to be kidding retire Goodens or Strawberrys number? How much did Gooden Screw the Mets fans by doing drugs while he was a Met? How many chances did the Mets give Gooden to get clean? I would NEVER retire either one of their numbers
I think the Wilpons would agree with you, Stewart. Straw and Doc got in way too much trouble off the field to warrant their numbers being retired by the Mets.
Agreed…. keith is the best!!!
Even if the Mets feel it was borderline to retire it, I feel like they almost have to now with his continuing contributions to the team, even if it’s not in the uniform.
Maybe it’ll be one of the surprises waiting for us in the Citi.
He won’t get into the Hall, I would love to see the Mets eventually retire it.
I don’t think its borderline at all at this point in their history. They should do it.
Hey Keith you should hold a contest where the winner gets to hang out in the booth with you , Gary & Ron and maybe help call an inning……… the contest…….. Best naturally grown “Keith Hernandez” Mustache!!
are you just saying that cuz you rock a stylin keith stache?
a grand central station for mets information, indeed…That’s awesome. Keith and Gary read your blog, cerrone!
I wonder if gary posts, and who he is. Don’t short yourself, gary, we love you too!
my guess: Gary was Mr. Met (the poster), and whoever he changed his name to since he disappeared (or got banned.) I mean, the guy’s gotta watch every game and can’t let out his frustration on the air, wouldn’t it make sense for him to be the most negative poster on the site!
btw, I’m joking, but wouldn’t it be funny if that were true?
It would be funny, but Gary himself said in an interview ith our fearless leader Cerrone that being with the team, seeing all that goes on (on the inside) is different than when he was just a fan and, if anything, it has mellowed him out to the ups and downs.
Keith,
Keep up the great job. You make the play by play my favorite sitcom nowadays
love ‘em both. hope they pop in to chat.
Best television booth in baseball. Vin Scully a distant second.
Those of us who are out of towners and get stuck via the Extra Innings package with opposing broadcasters during Mets road trips know how bad it can be. The Nats, Fish and D-bags announcers are particularly heinous. The Mets booth is far and away better than the rest of the league. They are pros, not homers, and provide insight along with humor.
The radio booth needs to lose Wayne Hagin, though!
Mark Grace is a joke.
grace is simply terrible. The game the other day with all of the boxing analogy was particularly painful. The Braves guys are probably next down on my list after “Gracey.” TBS getting national games is terrible.. those guys were obviously rooting against the Mets on last sunday’s game in zona.
You are so right, Gipper. The contrast is startling (and depressing on nights you flick on the tube and get some bozos who are not SNY).
No doubt. some are worse than others…but there are none that I am happy to see in lieu of SNY (other than Vin Scully).
The worst offenders (I am looking at you, Nats, FIsh and D-bags TV guys) are complete homers and totally unprofessional. Gary, who we all know is a lifelong Mets fan par excellence, always manages to call an opposing team’s big play or big homer in an exciting way. He plays it straight. Some of the hacks broadcasting for these other teams literally root on the air. The Nats guy yells, “Get up! C’mon! Get out of here! Yes!” for Nats homers but says, dejectedly, “oh no,” or “that’s not good” when the opposing team hits one. Very odd.
The Fish guys call all their players by their first names/nicknames and also openly cheer on-air.
The D-backs guys are unlistenable. One literally has to mute the TV to avoid being dumbed down by the experience.
All that plus horrid directing/production by comparison to Bill Webb and the SNY crew.
We are very lucky to have the SNY guys. I hope that broadcast team stays together a long time.
Howie is great too on the radio. Wayne Hagin…well, let’s hope that contract is only for this season.
Some of the crews (Fish are teh very first that come to mind) offer little-to-no analysis at all of what is taking place on the field. I am confident that I could do the same job they do from my couch. They just bring absolutely nothing to the table that enhances my experience of the game.
I agree that the D-Backs are the worse but I would have to have the Phillies announcers a close second. I liver near Philly so I have no choice but to watch the Mets games with the Phillies muted!!
I agree… I am not feeling Wayne Hagin at all!
Gary Cohen knows more about the mets than all of us combined, possibly about baseball too.
When it comes to baseball knowledge i am going with Ronnie!
all my yankee friends are jealous we have gary, keith and ron. thank the LORD we dont have the YES crew or the WCBS crew, otherwise we’d be hearing: “Oh my… oh my Gosh, it’s Jose Lima in Wilpon’s booth! the greatest day in mets history! the savior has arrived!”
Who does this guy think he is?
He’s Keith Hernandez.
Keith – and all the other SNY folks – keep doing your thing. Even when the quality of the Mets themselves are in question, the telecast is league-leading every night. From Gary, Keith, and Ron, to Kevin Burkhardt, to Matt and Mazz in the studio, it’s a quality product to be enjoyed by any fan of baseball.
Bob Murphy would be proud!
glad someone got teh seinfeld reference
Gary, Keith, and Ron…best team in MLB! Awesome exchange…reminds me of how much I miss Mets telecasts down here.
Who came up with the tag: Where baseball is always on?” Matt Cerrone and the gang….gotta love it Matt!
oh, and in case gary or keith are reading, can you show us how you scored that cincinatti reds ninth inning yesterday? not sure if you showed it during the game, since i was at the game. very confused how to score it.
The guy called out for batting out of order is a put out by the catcher. Beyond that, I am lost.
Keith is awesome. I’ve got nothing to add beyond that.
Keith, hook me up buddy! Put me in touch with the right guy! I will work out of pure joy.. and if you ever want to visit Puerto Rico, well let’s just say you won’t ever want to go back home. I promise Keith! The Latin angle, that’s gotta be points with Omar too, no?
Best defensive first baseman. Leader. Champion. ‘Nuff said.
that’s awesome!
Keith, if you’re reading, sign the damn licensing agreement already to get your name on the back of the authentic 86 Mets home jersey so i can shell out $300 to pay tribute to you!!!
I hate to be the bearer of bad news Matt, but your days of being shy and “in the background” are now over. Being the creator of, in my opinion, the best blog on the ‘net makes you a defaco celebrity.
Have anyone else wondered if any of the Mets players read/post on the site? If so, who do you think would be the most likely to do it?
Me. Try to figure out who I am!!!
lol j/k. I’m just some guy.
David Wright, absolutely. a) he’s young and almost certainly computer savvy. b) everyone loves him, so he has no reason to avoid sites like this. c) if you were him, wouldn’t you come on here to read all the good stuff people write about you? Plus, Chipper does it, and Wright’s gotta keep up with the other 3rd basemen in the NL East.
Wags should he would have the most awesome comments.
Church definately does, he admitted in postgame he had read and heard a lot about Cueto in the papers and web.
Were I Wright, I’d find some of the posts a little creepy. I can’t imagine any Mets would read the comments without an uncontrollable urge to demand a trade.
Aaron Heilman
If he does, that would explain the look of pain on his face.
haha it’s how he gets the poopy face before he even throws the 1st pitch
He probably has it bookmarked on his Blackberry. Is there Wi-Fi in the bullpen? We could have him live blog from the game.
Aaron if you are reading this, just want you to know i will NEVER EVER forgive you for that HR in 2006!
LOL, yeah, because Aaron Heilman is the sole reason we lost that game.
Build a bridge and get over it.
I would if i could, he is by far the biggest reason!
When you find yourself in that particular situation’s analog in whatever you do in your life, the world will no doubt reflect your unforgiving nature back at you and throw post toasties at your head.
I think you are right, god continues to punish me with the constant disappointments year after year of my team!
i say joe smith. just cause he seems down to earth enough to do it.
Joe Smith is definitely a regular guy… that video of him barking at Cubs fans in Wrigley is hilarious!
I’d say Maine
Or maybe at least some guy in a dress pretending to be him
Perhaps Guiseppe reads these too?
If only. He and Gary Busey probably spend much of the afternoon playing with each other’s hair and commenting on MetsBlog.
Nah. Maine as much admitted earlier in the season that he can barely check his e-mails.
Keith is the coolest guy in sports. Did anyone catch the picture of him smoking in the dugout on ESPN.COM from when he was a player. If i was 15 I’d have started just from that.
Gary is the most underrated play by play guy in sports and Darling is awesome too.
If the mets played like they called we be 162-0.
i wish willie was reading. then maybe he would know when he’s supposed to call for the sacrifice. : )
his own sacrifice
I would also like to motion to the members that anytime the name of Keith is mentioned that the words “Gold Glover” must precede it. Much like “Your Honor” does with a judge.
haha seconded.
SoDak’s e-mail reminded me –
on the subway this morning i saw a guy in a met hat and met jacket that looked like Cerrone. I was going to say something if he looked up but I didn’t think he’d be taking the 6 train at 9AM from the UES.
matt – you are a celebrity in mets fans eyes.
I thought they were fantastic in that 9th inning yesterday. They knew exactly what the rule was and they both were great in explaining it.
I can’t believe Dae-Sun Koo wore Keith’s #. What a disgrace. Those were the great teams, Keith, Straw, Doc, Darling, Mookie, Nails, etc. This blog has become extremely popular. I remember reading about it when they interviewed Matt from the bleachers. Now, he gets his own segment on SNY.
The Mets broadcast is the best baseball broadcast in the country. Cohen calls a great game even though his jokes are stupid sometimes, Keith is hilarious and when a player deserves to be knocked he does it, and Darling is as solid as it gets.
My only problem with the SNY telecast is that their camera choice seems to be off (for example the walk off Wright hit this year when he couldn’t see if the ball was fair or foul. The balls and strikes are also incorrect alot of the time.
So much of their camera work and direction is stellar. It’s a notable difference watching other broadcasts. (I’m on mlb.tv.) Angles, dissecting plays, the way ronnie takes apart what a pitcher is doing, with camera shots to illustrate. They do a brilliant job.
No doubt about it. We’re spoiled by them! When I have opposing feeds on Extra Innings (other than Vin Scully) it takes so much away from the game.
i had a crazy turn of events yesterday. my yankee buddy and i were arguing about keith vs donnie baseball. we were both arguing stats and late inning heroics and all that crap, then i said something that i very rarely get to say to a yankees fan. i asked him “who has more rings?”
quite possibly one of the top ten things in my life.
and yes i understand just how pathetic that last line was…i stand by it though
While we’re on the topic of the SNY booth, I have to say that I’ve grown to love the spot appearances by Ralph Kiner. He’s a baseball lifer, and he’s got a quick wit to boot. Plus it’s interesting to listen to the dynamic between Kiner (a HOF’er) and Keith (a should-be HOF’er).
ummmm i will pass on Kiner, always good time for a bathroom break!
Do you have to intend a “quick wit”?
Wow…knocking an elderly Mets original broadcaster (the last original Mets broadcaster still aline) and HOF hitter who has Bell’s Palsy yet still, if you listen well, adds a lot when he is in the booth. Sometimes, alleged Mets “fans” embarrass me.
Ralph is a connection to my youth watching Mets games with him and listening to the greatest radio broadcaster ever, the late Bob Murphy.
You’ve disappointed me “Gipper.” Kiner has been famous for his Yogi-esque malaprops for years. They’re part of his legend. Do a Google search for Kiner quotes. They’re terrific.
I like that he will ALWAYS be able to tell a good story. How he still recalls some of the details I have no idea.
TMU, I know what you’re saying. I still think he add something.
Never said he didn’t. I just doubt he intended to say, e.g., “all of his saves have come in relief appearances,” “on Fathers Day, we again wish you all happy birthday,” or my personal favorite, “most solo home runs come with no one on base.”
These aren’t recent quotes, either. Ralph was dropping malaprops when we were in diapers.
Gary, Keith and Ron are the BEST! and when Kiner joins the booth for a few innings it’s Heaven. I could listen to any of them talk baseball especially Mets baseball all day long.
send me a tootsie pop, Keith!
Maybe its my age (32) but the guy is horrible now and was even worst on Kiner’s corner… maybe I have to pay a certain age to appreciate that geeza?
pay=be
I don’t know, I’m only 29…but personal taste is always a factor.
I’m 27 and the voice of Kiner to me IS METS BASEBALL.
His voice alone brings back so many awesome Met memories.
I don’t know, I’m only 30 but Kiner’s mumbling knowledge of old school baseball is just fun to listen to. brings you back to him McCarver days. altough now i’m getting a little tired of McCarver though. Joe Buck on the other is another good one.
but still the best are when the three amigos, Gary kieth and ron are in the booth for a game.
The baseball package should let us choose which feed we want.
TMU,
I remember well all of the Ralph malaprops. It’s part of his charm. Like Murph always telling us the type and variety of clouds at gametime.
“Nice, warm ,mostly sunny May day here at Shea. Just a few wispy cirrostratus and one or two passing altostratus in a mainly blue sky here as we get ready to play.”
32 and you don’t like Kiner?
i’m 26 and i remember the guy and he always brings back good memories.
WWOR…channel 9
DK: “geeza”? That’s in Egypt, isn’t it?
…mainly “Azure” blue sky…
Murph!
Sorry guys, if I never see or hear kiner again in the mets booth it will still be too soon.
Mcarver’s career turned after Deon Sanders celebrated with him…
Hey Kiner is an acquired taste like fine wine or great prime rib. Not for everybody.
Seriously, tho..he was one of the 3 announcers that taught me how baseball works and gave me a lifelong love of the Mets. I will always admire and respect him.
“This game is being brought to you by Manufacture’s Hangover Bank”
Yes, Gary and Keith, we love you both!
You too Ron.
By far the best booth in baseball. I live in Philly, and can’t always see the SNY broadcasts. When I have to watch a Mets game with any other commentating team, the drop off in quality is really ridiculous.
Best announcing team in baseball, bar none.
I heard the exchange and was almost hoping Gary and Keith would say they DIDN’T read the comments section, as it gets . . . well, you know, and I’m as guilty as a lot of others.
Those ribs looked really good . . . .
I was actually pleasantly surprised by the Reds’ duo, which “Extra Innings” forced on me. They were dull, but at least they weren’t as ridiculously biased as a lot of teams’ announcers (I’m looking right at you, amateurish Washington Nationals broadcasts) and there were a few insights scattered here and there. Generally, the NL east announicing teams are horrid, and it just makes the SNY group look all the more impressive. Braves’ announcers have long been a National embarrassment, and the Nats’ and Marlins’ teams have that generic, ACC football C-team feel to them. Harry Kalas has a classic voice, of course, but the whining of Chris Wheeler ruins the Phillies’ broadcasts.
Anyway, uh-oh — I went negative. Just wanted to join the SNY love-in.
Being as how I do not live on the east coast and reside in the midwest, I end up with alot of Twins, Tigers, Royals games. Not to mention Cubs, Cardinals, etc. The SNY guys are by far the most entertaining group.
The thing about the guys in the booth is that alone they are good at what they do, but when they are all together it becomes great. You know, the whole “the sum is greater than the parts” thing.
Granted, if you watch enough Twins games Bert might just swear on live TV, but that doesn’t make up for the rest of the game!
Keith, as you can see in my post name been a big fan of yours since 84. When ever there was a wiffle ball game in my neighborhood you can be sure i was emulating your swing, even though i am a RH batter!
Am I the only one that think Keith is a moron…
I normally don’t call out spelling, but when you’re calling someone else a moron, please bother to edit. Moron.
Hey moron. It wasnt a spelling mistake. So when your calling someone a moron, know what your talking about. Moron. It was a grammar mistake, but please, point out the spelling mistake in my statement you idiot. Please bother to edit is some smart sounding English as well. So if your going to call me out, you better get more than a 2nd grade education!!!
It actually involved mistakes in both spelling and grammar, much like your latest post. Please put the glue away, turn off the computer, and attempt through phonics and PBS children’s shows to patch together some semblance of literacy before you return to your duties as MetsBlog media critic/ Phillies’ left fielder.
*you’re”
BTW, I know this guy Sloane who thinks you’d make a really nice friend.
Toomanyuniforms = Keith Hernandez…
Woman Hater
Narcissist
Overrated ballplayer
Sellout
Awful Actor
Fall asleep during every game, with a tootsiepop in your mouth….
Complaining that the games are too long for you…
Texting during the Games…How unprofessional can you get…but then again, those $20,000 mink coats and your fake mustache paint may help portray an image of yourself that fools the morons that frequently post comments on this site…
Um, toomanyuniforms is NOT Keith Hernandez. For starters, he’s clean-shaven. A clean-shaven Keith Hernandez is like Jack Lord with a buzz cut — not in this lifetime.
Hey, getaclue…….takeahike
getacluemets = Jim J Bullock
wahaha thats the best line i’ve heard all day
I think Jason Giambi is just jealous, back in your hole Giambino!
Me think no!
My wife doesn’t care for him either, especially since that “I’m not gonna say they belong in the kitchen, but they don’t belong in the dugout” comment.
But for my money, the Mets SNY broadcast team is far and away the best in all of baseball. Cohen has a great voice and knows more about baseball than most people; Darling’s analysis is top-notch and generally without flaw; and Keith’s perspective is what brings it all together. SNY has to do whatever it can to keep these guys together for as long as possible.
Keith’s snafus are odd; if he wasn’t so loved, he would’ve (rightly, I think) taken a lot more crap for that “kitchen/dugout” line than he did–but sports is “conservative,” anyway, & so an archaism or two is perhaps to be expected.
Perhaps due to my age (20) I am not able to appreciate Keith to the degree that everyone else here does, and while I find him entertaining, often times I feel his anecdotal stories are WAYYY too egotistical… For example, it was a few games ago that Gary and Keith were talking about their fondest Shea memories, and Gary mentioned his being about getting down to the field and claiming some turf after clinching the division in ‘70 (?). Then Keith of course talks about his greatest memory being winning the batting title (’79?) while playing for the Cards. I have no problem with honesty, and I prefer it over disingenuity, but it seems Keith never passes on an opportunity to promote himself. I find this rather annoying and somewhat embarassing. I do believe he does a good job for the most part during the game and is able to complement Ron and Gary’s serious approach with his easygoing attitude, though I wish at certain times he would be more intrigued by the game than he actually is… Thoughts? Do you guys believe that me not getting a chance to watch him in the 80s doesn’t give me the full perspective on him???
Lets put it this way, if he was on this team right now playing first base you would see a much better team! As a fan of his in the 80’s you loved seeing his fire and desire on/off the field. His arrogance gets a free pass in my book.
I agree with that – if you knew more about Keith as a player, you’d appreciate his attitude more. What’s great about Keith is that he’s always honest, sometimes painfully so.
He’d be the first to acknowledge he has an ego. Still, compared to some on the 1986 team, he is downright humble (see,e.g.: Carter, Gary).
He makes fun of it, so he can’t be too full of himself. I mean, even his appearances on Seinfeld made fun of his ego:
ELAINE: Well, thanks for a nice evening. It was really fun.
KEITH: Yeah, it was. [mind] Gosh, should I kiss her good night?
ELAINE: [mind] Is he going to try to kiss me?
ELAINE: I love Cajun cooking.
KEITH: Really, you know my mom’s one quarter Cajun.
ELAINE: Uh, my father’s half drunk. ha ha ha ha
KEITH: Maybe they should get together. [mind] Go ahead. Kiss her. I’m a baseball player dammit.
ELAINE: [mind] What’s he waiting for? I thought he was a cool guy.
KEITH: [mind] Come on I won the MVP in 79. I can do whatever I want to.
ELAINE: [mind] This is getting awkward.
KEITH: Well, goodnight
ELAINE: Good night
[they kiss - REALLY KISS]
ELAINE: [mind] Who does this guy think he is?
KEITH: [mind] I’m Keith Hernandez.
one of the best episodes ever
KEITH: Ya know I hate to brag but, uh, I did win eleven straight golden gloves.
ELAINE: [chuckles]
KEITH: I wouldn’t have brought it up but since you mentioned it.
ELAINE: Ha, I didn’t mention it.
KEITH: Well I won them anyway.
ELAINE: Well so what. I mean you played first base. I mean they always put the worst
player on first base. That’s were they put me and I stunk.
KEITH: Elaine. you don’t know the first thing about first base.
ELAINE: ha ha well I know something about getting to first base. And I know you’ll never be there.
KEITH: The way I figure it I’ve already been there and I plan on rounding second tonight at around eleven o’clock.
ELAINE: Well, uh, I’d watch the third base coach if I were you ’cause I don’t think he’s waving you in. You know I hate to say this but I think we’re really hitting it off. Get it? Get it?
KEITH: Funny.
Classic case of getting too big of a head. You can downplay it all you want -”you know how shy I am”. Gloat on your own time, this blog is supposed to be a place for Mets fans to get info and share opinion not a place where Mets fans come to see how much you’re proud of yourself. If you had any credibility you would’nt have made a deal with SNY, now all this site is is a 24 hour shill fest. The only reason this site is a factor is because the Mets were afraid of bad publicity so they got their hands in it and made you a faux star thus making you a professional shill. Congrats Matt, Gary Cohen talked about your site on the air, he also reads CW11 morning news promos-it’s the same thing.
Wow. Get some fresh air.
If you don’t like it then go away.
Gladly.
that will show us…keep on keepin it real dude…damn the man and all that crap
A little jealous arent we Fonzi13?
Looks like someone’s drinking the HATER-ade!
WOW! Time to up the meds, man!
I think Matt and this site get plenty of publicity. Maybe you missed the point of him posting it.
I think you’ve missed the entire point of what a blog is. Whether the creator is shy or not, he is right on the money in saying that the fact that the Mets announcers, including a Mets legend, talking about metsblog is about everyone who comes onto this site to share their thoughts with each other.
As for “credibility” – start your own blog then. Unlike you, who is probably wasting hours of some company’s time and money spending time on this site, it’s Matt’s job, and no one should fault him or anyone else for making a sound business decision to align with SNY. How does that make him a “shill”? Is he only “credible” if he rants and whines like a baby like half his readers, and creates conspiracy theories about why Church is not hitting #2 or why Oliver Perez did not sign an extension?
Get over it. If I were Matt I’d be proud as hell to have something I created be recognized in this way. And so would you I’d imagine.
wait, what’s wrong with wasting hours of my company’s time? they can’t expect me to work all day, can they??
Shhhh. Don’t tell my boss.
second
The only reason they talked about the site on air is because they have a deal with each other. It was a promo. I’m not saying he shouldn’t be proud of the site, just be proud on your own time. The second this site becomes about the blog and not about the Mets then there is no reason to come here. There is no question he sold out; you lose all perspective when you start taking money from an organization that you previously evaulated independently. Also, that was cute that you’d assumed I’m wasting some company’s time and money. All the Love Dave.
this is Matt’s own time.
I think he posted it because it was FUNNY and he thought we would enjoy it, not to be “proud”. If that were the case, he would be posting all the time about promos/publicity which he gets alot of.
I missed the exchange, and I am glad he posted it because it was another goofy keith exchange that can happen at any instant during a telecast.
I thought Fonzi said he was leaving.
Or some Valium or something.
All I know is, if I created a sports blog and my favorite team read a promo for it on the air, i would be pretty pumped up too.
I feel that the site has been much improved this year after the SNY deal took place. The videos and extra access (i.e. spring training) have led to a much greater experience. At least in my opinion.
See, there it is right there. No doubt Matt has that extra “bug” (SNY suits) in his ear, but the site experience has been exponentially enhanced….on the other hand, the comment sections somedays…..
Also, it was more than a promo. They read those every game. The point was that after reading the promo, they commented PERSONALLY about visiting the site, and enjoying reading it. BIG difference.
clown.
Fonzi13 = Loser.
Cerrone is living every Met fans dream with the access he gets to the team. The guy simply worked hard to get as far as he has. Everybody keeps whining about the SNY deal, but I don’t see any difference in the way Cerrone has posted info and his opinions since I have been reading this site, and that was before the deal. Everything is always on an even keel because that’s just how Cerrone is.
Don’t let the door hit you on the way out, “Fonz”. I guarantee you that you will not be missed.
Matt, we’ve met a couple of times, but I wouldn’t say I know you – are you really a shy guy? Has it been tough doing all of these on-camera spots?
I’m sure thinking “So glad i’m not sitting in a cubicle right now” helps him get through it ;-)
Hi Keith, and welcome.
signupcall: I also think he sometimes is egotistical and he talks about himself too much. Sometimes it seems he has no filter and some of his comments has gotten him in trouble.
And yes, sometimes he is annoying.
Hello SNY team (Gary, Keith, and Ron if you’re reading this)! I think you’re doing bang-up job and are the best sportscasters in baseball. Keep up the good work!
w/ regards to a previous post, I was listening yesterday on the fan, and boy does Wayne need to go!!! they should let Howie “Scully” the damn thing on his own!! I mean he packs as much witt and knowledge as ron keith and gary put together at times. (well maybe not that much but enough to very well hold it down on his own!!) I mean listening to Wayne is like eating a regular flavored rice cake.. (the buttered popcorn flavor ones are pretty good though…)
It’s tough to do radio solo all year long. But, I agree that Hagin is the one weak link in the Mets broadcast team, TV and radio. He has to go after this season. Sorry, Wayne. Nothing personal.
I listen to the games most days (rarely get t.v. here in Ireland). Like everyone else, I think Howie’s fantastic. However, I’m willing to give Hagin a longer time to get settled in. The on-air partnership takes time to develop. It’s still possible that Howie and Wayne will click.
There are times when Hagin bores me, but he can be a good, rational voice at times. Howie’s like us – wired to the team – where as Wayne is a little distant and can be saner. Hagin’s far from the worst there is on the radio around the league.
Far from the worst, indeed. But, we’ve been spoiled on radio over the years from the greatest of all time, Bob Murphy, to Gary and Howie…we’ve been very lucky as far as the radio booth.
We’ve had some clunkers in the TV booth (I’m looking at you, Fran Healy and Tom Seaver), but now have the best TV booth in baseball.
Gary Cohen is the best play by play man this side of Vin Scully……hands down. He’s professional and passionate.
Cohen is all right. Not in Scully’s class though. Keith is :aloof”.
Scully is amazing working by himself like that. Only negative about him is I’ve seen him off mic but on camera berating his staff rather heatedly (gesturing angrily, seemed to be yelling at them) on more than one occasion. He’s not the kind of guy I’d like to work for, but I do enjoy listening to him.
People have criticized Keith, so I’m going to say I can’t stand Scully. Goes back to the 70s. Never liked him, still don’t. He never stops talking, he never stops offering his folksy wisdom and useless stats, he never stops trying to sound poetic or profound. Uggh.
Yes, I know. I’m alone.
I think he’s a bit overrated. Most of it is his longevity — which is impressive, don’t get me wrong. Judged objectively, though, he’s good, but not some sort of ideal. Jack Buck had him beat by a good bit, in my opinion. Too bad his son is such a brat.
Totally agree with you on Jack Buck (& his son). Jack Buck was much, much better than Scully.
Met announcers excluded (because we’ll all be partial to Murph,) Buck was the best I heard.
Admittedly, I used to like Jon Miller, too, when I was a kid and he did Orioles’ games. Unfortunately, he’s slowly turning into a cross between Roger Angell and Chris Berman.
Go and listen to Scully’s call of the Kirk Gibson home run in 1988. I’m sure you can find it on youtube. Absolute perfection.
I’m not saying Scully doesn’t have good moments, but it’s when I have to listen to him do a whole game that he does my head in.
Scully is the best for a fluid play by play as action takes place, but his tangents in between pitches are insufferable.
even better was his call on a walkoff inside the park homerun last year against the Giants.
the FAN compared his call to Steiner’s for the Giants..it was not pretty
The talkative-ness of Scully is related tothe fact that he is simulcast on radio. Need to provide more for radio listeners than typical TV chatter.
He’s way better than most (some are unwatchable like the Nats, Fish, Braves, D-bags), though I’ll take the SNY booth over anyone.
Gipper,
That’s interesting that the Dodgers use the same broadcast for both radio and television. Does any other team do the same?
I’ll grant you that does exonerate Scully to some extent, but still he needs to draw breath sometimes – for my sake. Maybe if he didn’t work alone? I don’t know because I didn’t like him with Joe Garagiola on NBC.
And, yes, there are many broadcast teams that are simply awful. As I said, I listen more than watch and listening to Atlanta or Florida’s announcers is painful. San Diego and Arizona are equally bad. Don’t much care for Houston’s long-serving announcer either (can’t remember his name). I only once listened to the Nationals’ guys and thought they were all right.
Wayne Hagin is brutal. Hagin doesn’t add any suspense when he calls a big play and he shows more emotion when the other team scores then when the Mets score. I love Howie (and would actually like to see Gary vs. Howie in Mets jeopardy) and the Yankees have Sterling do the entire game so why can’t WFAN just have Howie do the whole game with Ed Coleman adding comments.
Gary vs. Howie in a Mets trivia contest for charity. Definitely should be done.
Fear the ’stash…
My buddy Chris turned me on to metsblog.com last year and I decided to log on one day and I was impressed. It is the one blog site that I visit religiously…..as for SNY, I live in central CT and comcast FINALLY brought the network on back on opening day, and I wanted the network just for the broadcasters alone….you just can’t beat Gary, Ron and Keith in the booth…and Kevin out in the stands…and the radio guys are great too….the immortal howie rose, ed coleman and wayne hagin (who actually isn’t bad). We are blessed with great broadcasters for our Mets.
And I wholeheartedly agree with one of the previous posters regarding the Yankees. Sterling and Kay were excellent on the radio back in the 1990’s, but now you have Sterling with that Waldeman…..who is just HORRIBLE. And Michael Kay on television just isn’t that good….YES is just horrible.
Keith is developing into our version of Phil Ruzzito. I read that someone on here called him aloof and unprofessional. I think when he is texting during the game and mowing down toosie pops it just adds to his charm. Keith could get by solely on his baseball knowedge and baseball stories but what makes him so endearing to Mets fans is his personality.
Keith was the most charismatic player on the most charismatic team in baseball history.
He kicked Darryl’s punk ass…
He hooked up with Elaine!!!
I don’t know if Gary could have pulled Elaine, but I guarantee you he could win Marisa Tomei!!!
“So, tell me, how is that a man like you, so bald and do quirky and funny… How is it you’re not taken?”
Marissa Tomei is one fine women!
When having to listen to the other team’s announcers on some of the MLB Extra Innings games, one will greatly appreciate Ron, Keith, and Gary. Especially when you are stuck with Grace (ARZ), Carpenter (WASH), or Chip Carey.
May as well give Keith a lapdance as he may be reading…..
There is a VERY strong argument for Keith to be in the HOF. Aside from being one of the best hitters in the game for nearly 2 decades, his defense should be enough justification.
My logic….Look around the infield and consider the best players to ever play their postiion defensively. 2b-Mazeroski. SS-Ozzie. 3b- Robinson. All of them are in b/c of their glove moreso than their bat.. Hernandez was a far better hitter than all 3 of these guys, so how is it that the greatest 1b ever to field the position gets no accolades. Doesn’t compute.
re: bad announcers, in addition to those you deservedly pointed out, Hawk Harrelson on Chicago White Sox games is the worst homer I’ve ever heard. He’s intolerable. Also the Padres’ guys root far too much for my taste.
Can’t stand Ted Leitner, but I like Hawk, just because his homerism is so outrageously over the top that you get the sense he doesn’t really buy it. Besides, he owes the Sox faithful, big time, after destroying the team in the ’80s.
Keith gets screwed because the nincompoop HOF voters consider 1B a “power position” and he only hit 162 HRs. Never mind that he revolutionized the position and was a nonparalleled leader.
Keith should be in the Hall. So should Gil.
I agree regarding Vin Scully as well…..truly the best announcer in ALL of baseball. I had the chance to listen to the Mets-Dodgers game last week on XM and they carried the KABC/Dodgers feed and it was great to hear Vin Scully calling the game. Not only very knowledgeable, but very classy. A true legend.
Well im gonna start giving AM shoutouts every morning to Keith, Ron and Gary when I post here.
Gary, thanks for being a million times better then Michael Kay. You are forever my ace card in arguments with yankee fans.
Keith, can you clone yourself two times, stay in the booth cuz we love you, and have one clone play first base, and the other manage the team?
Ron, thank you for all the pitching insight. I pitched 3 no-hitters in mlb 2k7 last year thanks to your techniques and announcing
Keith is the only Met whose jersey I’ve ever owned. With the one excpetion of that comment he made about women belonging in the kitchen, he is the man.
Keith is also the second best color guy in baseball–the best is Ron Darling. Ron Darling might actually be one of the best people ever. For those of you like me who were young fans in the 80s, you’ll remember that no one signed autographs like Ron. Always the first one out of the locker room, and he would stand and sign for at least 15-20 minutes. Ray Knight was pretty good, although he would prefer to sit in his car and sign.
Darling is a class act. Talked to him a couple of times when I happened to be staying at the team hotel when watching Mets series out here on the West Coast. Very approachable and genuine. Truly a bright guy. We started talking baseball, meandered into philosphy, college hockey (my undergrad college and his, Yale, are hockey rivals) and politics. Kevin Burkhardt is a good guy too.
Alright, hey Keith: nice commercial–”back-field in mo-tion!” ha ha ha
hahahah…. yea, no play for Mr. Gray
Gary is enternaining to listen to and he’s pleasant. Keith is too full of himself and obnoxious and Ron is a little annoying when he shows every pitch with the ball he keeps in the booth but, i gottta say, he is funny when he mispronounces some player’s names.
This might be the coolest thing I’ve read in a long time. Keith Hernandez loves this blog!!!
Everyone – thank you for the kind words.
–Gary
THERE HE IS… GARY GNEW, INTERACTING WITH THE METS FAITHFUL!!!
HOW COOL IS THAT?!?!
