During his appearance on WFAN today, Mets C Brian Schneider had the following to say when asked about the attitude in the team’s clubhouse:
“I’ve been in a few and this is a great one. Everyone is loose. We had a great road trip, faced some top teams. Everyone enjoys each other. This is one of the best clubhouses I’ve been a part of.”
Schneider, regarding the Nationals cheering from the dugout, and whether Elijah Dukes, who was accused of being the ring leader, should be knocked down with a pitch, said:
“It caught my attention a couple of times. I’m not used to seeing that in the big leagues, but I wouldn’t use the term ‘Bush League’ to describe it…I’d rather strike (Dukes) out, keep him off base. That’s the way I’d take care of it.”
To hear Schneider’s entire interview, during which he also discussed Scott Schoeneweis, Nelson Figueroa, and the Subway Series, among other things, go to WFAN.com.
…schneider has been a great addition to the team…he’s very good at dealing with the media, and handling the mets’ pitching staff, neither of which is tracked by statistics…i feel that by the end of the season, we will feel very good about the contributions he has made on the field as well…

You may disagree with me, but this whole incident only confirms how glad I am to have Lastings Milledge off of my team.
oh, do you play for the mets? what number do you wear?
99.
I agree… I would feel dirty having to cheer for that kid.
excellent by Schneider. Who cares what the other team says or does? If the players can ignore all the hatred the fans are throwing at them, I think they can ignore the Nationals. I’m not sure which group has less of a chance of making the postseason.
if the apparently voice of our clubhouse thinks a 3-3 trip is good, i am really concerned.
Didn’t he use the word “great”?
you guys beat me to it: how is a 3-3 road trip “great”??????
i guess a 4-3 homestand will be extraordinary by his standards…unbelievable
This is the attitude Willie is teaching them. I am so proud!
It was great because the games they won they won by a lot, and the offense, which had previously been terrible, woke up. The losses were, with the exception of Pelfrey’s start, close losses, and They’ve been able to sustain that offensive momentum despite two days off (including the rainout).
But what really counts is the record. 3-3 is not great. And as I’m sure you know, momentum in baseball means nothing. The offense could very easily go silent in the drop of a hat. Bronson Arroyo proved that.
it’s honestly disturbing. if this team thinks that road trip was “great” then there really isn’t a lot of hope for them.
don’t forget ‘media spin’ Ask any of these guys before the trip if they would accept .500 and none of them would say yes.
you’re bringing in hypothetical imaginary situations
“We had a great road trip” ~ Brian Schneider, on a 3-3 road trip
is all you need to know.
You know, I think you’re reading too much into it. He didn’t say the won-loss was great. Maybe they bonded over the trip. Maybe they started to pick it up. Just maybe things happened that YOU don’t know anything about. So calm the hell down.
i’m reading too much into it? i’m reading a total of six words. you’re the one throwing out all the conditionals and hypotheticals.
Well, you have made about 25% of the comments on this particular post.
But, you assume he meant that it was a “great” road trip because they went 3-3, which is where the problem lies.
I will say that I didn’t listen to the interview, so I can’t speak to context, but unless Schneider was asked “How disappointing was the road trip, going 3-3?” and he said that it wasn’t disappointing, it was great, to assume he meant that .500 ball was great is putting words in his mouth.
ESPECIALLY because it says at the top that he was asked about clubhouse attitude, to which he says they had a great road trip. In that context, it has nothing to do with the record.
this could be the clubhouse that goes all the way to the clubhouse world series
Back on this one again. Almost every team in the majors would be happy to go 3-3 on a road trip against the best team in the MLB and the hottest team int the MLB.
Recipie for success is to win around .500 on the road 40-41 and go .650 at home 52-29. 92 win season is usually in the playoffs.
almost every team might be happy with that, but the ones who believe they will win a championship probably aren’t.
I don’t have too much time to look at it but go back and look at the Sox and Rockies road records last year. Now look at their road records against teams above .500. If you come back and tell me it’s way above .500 then I will concede your point.
the actual record isn’t the point. calling the .500 trip “great” is. it’s a matter of attitude.
boston was 9 games over on the road. colorado was under but 1) they were a complete flash in the pan that 2) plays in a home park that is a huge anomaly.
which is all water under the bridge, because even if a team should statistically be content with a .500 trip under those cirumstances, do you think that’s the reason? do you think willie called up baseball prospectus and asked for a detailed overview of playoff teams and their records on road trips against good and hot teams? and that’s why schneider is so happy?
actually i am laughing at my desk thinking about the speech. willie the saber geek! who knew?
If going 3-3 against 2 good teams on the road isn’t great, then what should we expect to do against 2 bad teams, 5-1?
Do you expect like 60-21 on the road or something?
3-3 is the very DEFINITION of “not great”
i don’t see how anyone can argue otherwise
i don’t think anyone should be angry or upset about a 3-3 trip, but there’s a pretty wide gap between that and calling it “great”
i mean unless the boys went out to some killer strip clubs in LA and that’s what he’s talking about
that i would be fine with
Where in the world is Paul LoDuca?
Give credit where credit is due— getting this guy and Church was a great move by Omar.
broken hand…
Elijah Dukes deserves to get knocked down simply because he threatened to kill his girlfriend and children.
I agree, if by “knocked down” you mean “jail time”.
Agreed, Dukes has got to be one of the biggest scum bags in baseball.
I think the Nationals have every right to cheer. It’s not like they’re heckling their opponents, they’re encouraging their teammates. Besides, the last player in all of sports that you want to mess with is Dukes.
Figgy believed that they were heckling him.
Yeah, it takes a big man to threaten a Woman and child and knock up his 17 year old foster child. Wow, he is scarry! He is a total scum bag!
Granted they played two teams that were hot on the west coast swing…but to characterize a 3-3 trip as great????
C’mon!!-this team is theoretically supposed to compete for the pennant and Schneider classifies a .500 roadtrip as great!!!
This is the attitude that annoys Mets fans and justifiably so.
Instead of worrying what the other team does or doesn’t do, the Mets should worry about pitching well, good defense and good offense…. they should only worry about winning games instead of wasting their energy in pointless issues.
Schnieder said alot of good things here. Perhaps he chose the wrong word? I think he meant “good” road trip:.)
The thing that bothered me the most was hearing Willie during a pre-game on WFAN saying, “We need to get ourselves way above .500 so we can relax a bit.”
Relax? What is that all about?
Oh wait, that is what the Mets did last year. Ran out to a good record, relaxed….and choked.
he can relax when he gets away from a .500 club
Can Johnny make someone taste some dirt tonight? That’d be nice.
You know, if I had a fan base that booed my team even though I was over .500 exactly like the rest of my division, and one that wanted to debate semantics, I’d call any road trip out of town “great,” let alone one that went to PHX and LA.
comments like that are what makes even losing road trips great in comparison
I’d rather have what was coming out of the Nats dugout, than a bunch of mellow professionals who take things for granted. Time and time again these emotional teams outperform the stiff businessmen of the game. Just look at the NL East standings right now for an example.
So you’re saying the Phils are “businesslike” as well? Or the Nationals for that matter?
I don’t buy it.
The Phillies are emotional. The Marlins are emotional. They’re in 1st and 2nd place.
It’s impossible to really make a strong argument that that’s why they’re in first place, but I’ve played on a lot of teams in my life (not professionally, of course), and it’s only the fiery teams that overachieve. The sum can be greater than the parts.
Besides, passionate underdogs are always more fun to watch.
Don’t throw at lastings…throw at Willie…
Although, the only result would be knocking down the cardboard cutout of him standing in the dugout.
