News: SNY Team in Upper Deck
By Regis Courtemanche - May 13, 2008 11:55 am

On Thursday, Gary Cohen, Keith Hernandez, and Ron Darling will broadcast the Mets vs. Nationals game from near the last row of the upper deck at Shea Stadium to revisit where Cohen had watched many a game while growing up.

…i think this is such a great, and original idea…when i first heard this i didn’t believe it, but i’ll definitely be watching to see what goes right, and what goes wrong…overall it should be a lot of fun, but keith will need to bring a lot of tootsie pops to appease the shea masses…

Damn, wish I could go. The upper deck is where it’s at.

    • giuseppe franco_procede says:

Agreed. The upper deck is where it’s at. Only SNY would create an ingenious idea. I wish I had tickets.

      • mackey_sassers_arm says:

Upper Deck tickets for tomorrow’s game are only $5.

        • giuseppe franco_procede says:

Cha-ching! Question…where in the upper deck will they sit?

        • mackey_sassers_arm says:

I think they said during the broadcast last night they will be in an Upper Res Box in section 1 or 2. I am not positive though.

  2. fortleemets says:

I think that there should be a metsblog.com event in which we get hundreds of fans to sit in the farthest section of the upper deck during some no-name game against the padres.

  3. metmaniac89 says:

    Lets not boo them please

  4. GregB says:

I like that SNY is willing to try new things…some will work and some won’t, but that’s fine…it keeps things fresh for the fans and the SNY crew.

i’d like to suggest they do a game suspended from a hot air balloon over center field wearing Mr. Met costumes. :-)

  5. metties1 says:

Is Cerrone on vacation? Isn’t his job a vacation to begin with?

  6. MetsFiend19 says:

SNY can do all they want. Unless this team starts winning games on a consistant basis, the fanbase won’t care.

Winning cures all….and the Mets don’t have it.

  7. Tidewater says:

It’s going to be a wild ride! I hope they bring their 7-second delay with them.

  8. khmustache says:

i hope it’s the no alcohol section..otherwise this might have to be broadcast on hbo or comedy central’s secret stash

  9. Dirtysanchez says:

I heard that during the broadcast yesterday. Pretty cool idea.

  10. jimyager says:

Just another blowout game. We will get them today. Im sick of hearing that crap. We got blown out by the Dodger, Reds and now Nats, I see a pattern. Im getting sick of hearing the same old same old and watching this team roll along. I feel like 2007 never ended. And that scares me. They are NOT playing good and I dont see any signs of life. I think we are a third place team, at least we are playing like one. I GIVE UP. Lets hope that 2009 in the new stadium is better.

    • Knuckler says:

Wouln’t it be better to wait at least till’ the break before jumping off the cliff buddy?

    • Tidewater says:

Huh? The pitching was awful yesterday, but there were plenty of signs of life in that game.

      • giuseppe franco_procede says:

The offense played to its potential yesterday. Some good defense, too. Our achillies heal last night was the pitching. Figgy couldn’t keep it together, Sosa blows. What else is new? I’m not giving up on this team, just yet!

    • darkstar73 says:

I would like to repeat a sentiment I made yesterday. This is not 2006, in fact, in the vast majority of years, divisions are not win in May, June, and July. In 2006 it was, but that was the aberration, not the rule. It’s like everyone around here is expecting 2006 all over again, and if we don’t get that, you’re ready to give up. Let things play out a little bit, I know I know, everyone will call me an apologist, but i’ll make this clear this time, I don’t think we’re playing good ball right now. We’re inconsistent right now, but that doesn’t mean we won’t be more consistent later in the year. You have to let these things play out. 2006 was a fluke guys, anyone who thought we’d walk through the division form day one was joking themselves and/or was fooled by someone who said that. People call me the guy with the rose colored glasses on, but I’m the realist, I’ve realized from the beginning this year will be a fight. Everyone who is so upset about inconsistent play seems to have the expectation that this team would be great and wouldn’t be inconsistent at times. Who was wearing the glasses? This team had to have SO many things go right for it to be a good to great team, and it hasn’t happened. Let things play out people. Divisions are rarely if ever won in May, June, and even July.

      • Gasface77 says:

I agree and I think we definitely need to give this team more time. Harold Reynolds made a good point last night. He said this is not football. There are not 16 games. There are 162 games. He also noted that this is an older, veteran team and from his experience, these types of teams take longer to start clicking. Assuming the pitching gets more consistent (Ollie, Pelfrey, Pedro back?) then I think things will be fine. I hope.

      • Ceetar says:

I know..sure yesterday was bad, but keep in mind Figueroa was our ..7th? starting choice. He’s done alright for a 7th Starter right? Also, for all this talk of ‘beating up on the weak teams’ we’re now..4-2 against the Nationals, which is good. 2-1 against the Marlins, who have played well, 4-2 against the Phillies, who can hit, and 2-3 against the Braves which isn’t as good but certainly not panic-inducing.

Couple that with scoring hard in 3 of the last five games, and starting pitching doing very well in 4 of the last 5, I actually feel pretty good about this team. Most people would, if they didn’t pretend the 2008 season started in June of last year. Guess what, the Mets record from last year has 0 relevance today.

  11. iamatwork says:

Can I get tickets to their booth if they’re getting tickets to the upper deck?

    • gipper91375 says:

      Darkstar,

I agree. And I doubt you’ll find any Willie-basher or “negative”-types like myself simply giving up, stop caring or even stop believing (somehwere way down deep in a place in their heart they do not dare access). Everybody knows it’s a long season and things can end up working out. It isn’t the 2006 season that we want or expect (those rarely happen – last time we saw that was 86)…..we just want to see evidemce that this team isn’t playing like 2007. So far, the evidence is skimpy. And that stresses us out.

  12. Santanaman says:

The problem is that Willie doomed us by sending Figgy out for the fifth. Yes, there were signs of life that were extinguished by our fearless leader.

Did anyone see Willie hanging his head in the dugout after two batters reached in the fifth? He knew he screwed-up. He should be playing for a win and not dodging a loss. That was a very important game yesterday.

jimyarger may be correct. This season is slipping away. Perhaps it would be less stressful to embrace that thought.

    • mackey_sassers_arm says:

It’s not like sosa would have slammed the door if he were to start the fith either. Willie was probably hanging his head because he knew that all of his options for the 5th inning would have blown the lead.

    • RPsJacket says:

It was our #6 (arguably #7) starter. Not our pitching match up. willie was trying to get some length, manage for the long haul, it didn’t work out and Sosa sealed it.

How was last night’s game more important than any of the others this week? Either way, he gets killed.

I’m curious how the season is “slipping away”? Do they have to sweep every series? If they play .600 ball between now and the ASB, would you change your mind, or will it have to be .700 or .750? I’m not flaming, just curious what everyone’s expectations are for May 13.

      • MEX says:

Nothing about this team tells me they are capable of playing .600 ball; that’s 97 wins over the year. Do you think this team can win 97 times in a season? I don’t think they can. To go .600 from here to the All Star Break would be 36-23. I’ll take it, but not when I see 4-3 home stands and 4-4 road trips in the club’s future.

      • gipper91375 says:

        RP’sJacket (great name, btw),

As you know, the vast majority of the fans (I have rarley seen such unanimity in a Metsblog poll) voted that 5-2 was the bare minimum threshold for this seven-game homsetand against two craptastic teams. After last night, that means the Mets will have to win the next 3 to reach that agreed upon bare minimum threshold (so much for exceeding expectations, btw).

How confident are you that the Mets will sweep the remaining 3 games against the Nats? Personally, I am not holding my breath. And that is troubling.

  13. raylyman78 says:

I have to comment on one thing that is annoying when reading the comments section. What is with the use of “We” when talking about the Mets. No one here plays on the team. There is nothing more annoying than hearing fans comment about a team like that. Leave talk like that to Yankees fans.

    • mex84 says:

Uh, then dont read the comment section. “We” understand that we dont play/work for the team. But, we are a group of fans that enjoy (most of us) the team and have a sense of together as a result. Get out of your basement for once.

    • cyclone says:

God, I hate anal retentive comments like this.

Yeah, none of us work or are affiliated with the Mets, but we do support them through this blog, by watching the games on tv, going to the games at the stadium and buying team merchandise. A lot of people invest a lot of their time and energy and money into this team just to feel like they are a part of it, win or lose. Purely because we love the team. So when they lose, we feel it. When they win, we feel it. You can’t invest that much into something and not in some way feel a part of it, especially when winning is something that has never come easily to this franchise. If you’re able to disassociate yourself from the team, great for you. But don’t criticize others because they feel their connection to the team is runs a little deeper than yours.

And for the record, I’m not a “we” guy, either. But the fan policing on this blog is a little sickening already.

    • AlreadyMissShea says:

Yeah, and the other 122 pro sports teams and their fan bases. It happens everywhere, and it’s perfectly acceptable.

      • AlreadyMissShea says:

Besides, Raylyman , how do you know some people here DON’T work for the Mets. I would bet at least a few people here do have some kind of affiliation with the team. What difference does it make anyway?

Oh, and I hope we win tonight.

  14. on0itzjoe says:

i like how a topic that had nothing to do with any games suddenly was spammed with “OMG THE SEASON IS OVER!! I GIVE UP” messages.

  15. giuseppe franco_procede says:

Has anyone seen Cerrone? He’s been M.I.A since yesterday? Vacation?

  16. mex84 says:

Sorry to draw comparisons from the Skankees, but last year at this time they were 17-19 and made the playoffs at 94-68. The season is long and things can change. Hopefully Omar and Willie switch to caffinated coffee and figure things out. We are getting over a deep injury period and things should right themselves. Keep the faith!

    • RPsJacket says:

People want instant gratification. Unfortunately, they are only as good (or bad) as their last game.

Figgy gave all we could have expected. Fact is, we already have a 5th starter in Pelf and its tough to get on a roll when your rotation is not whole.

Unfortunately, we have alot riding on Pedro in my opinion. If he comes back and gives them 5 strong months and OP gets back on track, they should be fine. In the end, if they are relying heavily on figgy/vargas/armas/bostick/etc then Omar will have to face alot of questions.

But not now, we have to see how it plays out, one series at a time.

    • MEX says:

The Yankees also went 97-65 the previous season and won their division. You can’t compare their slow start from a good season to the Mets’ slow start following a dismal collapse.

      • mex84 says:

Not comparing, just providing a sense of hope. Some people need to step back from the edge and relax. As Yogi says “It aint over til its over”.

  17. Santanaman says:

OK, I appologize. My thought about the season slipping was in reference to every game being important. How in the world does Willie leave Figgy in the fifth or when the first two get on in the fifth?

I don’t mean to sound like I’m giving up but it seems to me that getting our a** kicked by a last place team 2 of the last 3 games is not building momentum.

My bad, I’ll be more positive

  18. koosman says:

It has been a year of .500 ball now. Pointing this out does not mean you have given up on the season, or that you are not a fan. There are simply not very many reasons to think they will be in the playoffs this year when you watch their level of play.

    • boozermetsfan says:

i’m sure Keith is not happy with this idea. he’s resitant to anything that inconveniences him or takes him out of his comfort zone.

good idea they decided to do it during a day game rather than risk being cold and around more drunk fans

    • MEX says:

Koos, you’re absolutely right; I hope the Mets make the playoffs and win a World Series, but their play right now doesn’t make me believe they will, and that’s what is sucking the joy out off the Mets for me right now. All I want is something to point to and say, this will get better, that last June through September was fluke and not the portent of a slide into mediocrity that this season’s slow start suggests it was.

I love the Mets, and always have belief in them when I can fix on one thing which shows promise. Hell, I predicted they would climb back into the race in 2001.

      • koosman says:

I agree, Mex. It does seem like a slide into mediocrity, which is alarming because it seems to be acceptable to everyone in the organization. But there is always hope. The lineup has been better with Alou back and that’s something positive. We need to hope Pedro can contribute, and that no one runs away with the division before the Mets can start playing better ball.

        • gipper91375 says:

Well said Koos, and Mex. The well reasoned points of the rational Mets fan. Neither ignoring the many problems nor childishly whining “this team sux.”

  19. SoDakMets says:

As of yesterday the Mets are at about a 53% winning percentage. That projects out to about 85 wins. And they had that number without having a complete roster for the entire first month.

i can honestly say that I do not see the team at a 53% winning percentage the remainder of the year with a full roster. Now that we have Alou and Castro back, Beltran finally getting his legs under him, and Main returning to form I see the team steadily improving as the season progresses.

This team will make the playoffs. There is no doubt in my mind.

    • Ceetar says:

I agree. If the Mets improve..barely..each month. They’ll probably be able to win close to 95 and that will easily take the division.

      • MEX says:

That’s a .603 winning percentage the rest of the season; no team last season finished with a winning percentage that high! I see this team winning 90 games tops, and that’s if they win 56% of their remaining games.

  20. gipper91375 says:

As for the SNy upper deck idea, it would be more fun to have them set up the booth in UD Sec 48, near the top – where Gary was for the 1969 LCS. I’d love it just to hear Keith complain about how horrible the seats are. “That pitch was, well, Gar, I can’t tell. Let’s just say it was in the general direction of the plate.”

UD Res box sec 1 actually aren’t all that bad. I mean, I haven’t sit that high since I was in 4th grade, but as I recall they are okay. ;-)

    • AlreadyMissShea says:

I practically live in the upper level. The only parts of the UL where you can’t really see everything is near the lines. Even there, it’s not terrible. There are parts of the Loge where you can’t see anything hit in the air. From most of the UL you can see everything. It’s pretty cool, and the price is right. :)

      • gipper91375 says:

I dunno, I’ve gotten spoiled in my old age and with my disposable income. Anything above field box 43F seems far away to me. ;-)

That said, you are right about the res sections in loge and in the upper part of the Mezz. Citi Field will solve those obstructed views. Loge boxes behind home are pretty sweet seats.

        • AlreadyMissShea says:

Well I never have a problem with disposable income. In fact, by the middle of each month, it’s disposed.
