    Santana vs Yankees=media field day

We had better win the last 3 games against Washington. To go 4-3 @ HOME against, arguably the two worst NL teams is indefensible.

A 5-2 homestand, coupled with taking 2 of 3 from the Yankees would produce a 7-3 clip before leaving New York for Atlanta.

Should we lose any more games against the Nats and LOSE 2 of 3 from the Yankees, we’d be right @ .500 heading to Turner Field: historically, the toughest place to win games for this franchise…

So Vargas & Pelfrey in the doubleheader at the ted next Tuesday? ughhhhh

    • mackey_sassers_arm says:

They’ll probably need about 10 bullpen innings that day… Imagine if one of the games goes extra innings?

      • backinbusiness says:

10 BP innings, and no long man! I hope Wise is nice and stretched out…

Sosa I’m fine with, but him and Figgy in one swoop creates a giant innings-eating hole.

        • mackey_sassers_arm says:

The only thing I can think of is if they start vargas in the day game and then call up a guy like Bostik in between games just in case.

        • yagottabelieve says:

Absolutely. In fact, I would venture a guess that’s why it’s Vargas instead of Bostick, as originally believed. Vargas can get one start and go right back down, replaced by Bostick or Muniz. But since you’re going to need someone to cover Fig’s next start (and possibly the next few depending on how you want to fill until Pedro gets back) so you don’t want to bring up a Bostick, demote him, and then have to leave him down for ten days.

        • Nate W. says:

          excellent call MSA!

I would agree the Mets will do something to that effect. They may even call up a reliever (like Collazo who could be a long man) for a few days, then call up Bostick for the May 24th start which is when they will need the next 6th starter. Of course this all assumes everyone stays healthy from now until May 24th…

          (/me knocks on wood)

What I don’t understand is, both the Mets and Braves have an off day the Monday before the double header. Wouldn’t both teams prefer to play one game each on Monday and Tuesday, rather than doubling up on Tuesday?

Makes no damn sense to me. Unless there’s some monster truck/gun show/tobacco spittin’ convention at the Ted on Monday.

    • Another Matt says:

There’s one bit of flexibility the club has for the double header:

If they need lots of innings from the ‘pen in the first game, get as many as possible from Smith, then option him between games and replace him with Muniz or Collazo for the second game.

I don’t know how long Smith would have to stay down before they could reverse that switch, though, which is problem #1 with doing that.

The other problem is all those pesky lefties in the Braves’ lineup… don’t really want Smith pitching to a string of lefties.

      • adropofvenom says:

It’s 10 days btw that Smith would need to be down for….

        Barring an injury of course.

It’s nice to have the best three going against the Yankees. I can’t remember the last time it lined up that nicely.

alright,, good job today omar,, lets get some positive vibes going and go out and DESTROY this nationals club. Then we have our horses going in the bronx. Lets make this an exciting week. Lets go Mets!!!!

  5. mex84 says:

Ok, we just need to get Pedro and El duque back and get on a roll! Lets see what these guys are made of with a good test this weekend!

mixed feelings. it will be nice to pummel the yanks but the series in atlanta is so much more important.

    • mackey_sassers_arm says:

why mixed feelings? It isn’t like it’s just one or the other, is it?

    • Ceetar says:

Perez and Santana still pitch against the Braves. Maine misses out, but they’ll be other series and you can’t always line them up exactly right for every series. those other guys gotta pitch too.

    • wrightnow5 says:

It’s still going to be the same 4 guys in Atlanta. Teams usually split double headers so I like that we have Pelfrey and Vargas going to get a win out of one of them with Santana and Ollie rounding out the final 2. Of course none of this matters unless players step up. This is not going to be the time for the Mets to make a run with a tough road trip coming up. Take these 3 from the Nats (or 2 out of 3) survive the 10 game road trip, and come back and start taking care of business.

      • dr jones says:

actually not to nitpick but teams don’t normally split double headers.. In the past 10 years its something like 50%. Gary and Ron talked about this a few days ago

      • keithc says:

If Pelfrey pitches like he did last time he was in a double header, then all the Mets need to do is hit.

  7. Jova1931 says:

I knew the Mets would line up their three best pitchers against the Yankees. So I figured they’d put Maine in the Sunday Night game. P.S. Maine has never pitched well on a Nationally Televised game; vs. Atlanta this year on fox; last year @ Shea vs. Yankees; last year @ Wrigley vs. Cubs, etc. (except game 6 of the NLCS).

    • Metropoliben says:

      That’s a BIG exception.

    • metsftw says:

4 games. what a huge sample size. if we’re using 4 games as a sample size, angel pagan is an effing hall of famer.

I’ma pull a “David Sloane” and ask you to step off your short bus and read my comments carefully. I referenced a few different examples. If you want to further expand upon my point, or refute it, do some research. I was giving you the base of my opinion.
