by Mike Nichols

The Game:

The Mets (19-17) continue their four-game series versus the Nationals (16-23) tonight at Shea Stadium, starting at 7:10.

The Lineup:

The Pitchers:

RHP John Maine (4-2, 3.00 ERA) takes the hill for the Mets. Maine was stellar in his last start, earning a victory, on May 7 versus the Dodgers allowing one run on four hits and two walks while striking out four over 8.1 IP. Maine has allowed two runs or less in six of his seven starts this season. Opponents are hitting .200 (10-for-50) and have scored only two runs off Maine after the fourth inning this season. Maine is 4-2 with a 4.84 ERA in eight career starts versus the Nationals.

LHP John Lannan (0-3, 3.43 ERA) starts for the Nationals. In his last start on May 8 versus the Astros, Lannan earned a win surrendering one run on seven hits and a walk while striking out three over 6.0 IP. In his last start versus the Mets on April 17, Lannan struck out 11 over 6.0 IP allowing just one run on three hits earning a no-decision. He is 0-1 with a 4.60 ERA in two career starts versus the Mets.

The Notes:

Jose Reyes is batting .353 with a double in 17 at-bats during the current homestand. He is 4-for-6 in his career versus Lannan.

The Mets are batting .272 versus left-handed pitching this season and are 8-4 versus left-handed starters.

Nine of Ryan Church’s last 15 hits have gone for extra bases (3 2B, 1 3B and 5 HR). He is batting .326 (31-for-95) in his last 24 games.

The Nationals are 1-18 when trailing after six innings this season.

Cristian Guzman leads the Nationals with a .346 average with RISP. He is batting .339 in his career versus the Mets.

lots of Lefties. Is Tatis in NY already? Would be the perfect time to get him a start.

mackey_sassers_arm May 13, 2008 at 5:57 pm

We’re facing John Lannon, not Sandy Koufax. And it’s not like Church or Schneider are struggling against LHPs.

gipper91375 May 13, 2008 at 6:32 pm

Mets sure made Lannon look like Koufax last time they faced him.

Piazza1998-2005 May 13, 2008 at 5:59 pm

I really hope we don’t have to start relying on Fernando Tatis to play against lefties. Please let me know when that happens and I will trade in my vintage 2006 Cliff Floyd jersey. As for Lannan and his 11 K’s against us on April 17th… I guarentee David Wright hit’s a homerun against him. Probably in the first at bat. Although I could be wrong. Of course I do know Lannan won’t strike out 11 in 6 innings again. I mean it’s not possible for Delgado to get 11 at bats in 6 innings is it? I mean unless the Mets have a huge lead or something. Which I suppose is possible… I mean they are playing the Nationals right? Last night sort of confused me. Nelson made them look like the ‘27 Yankees.

gomets6091 May 13, 2008 at 8:06 pm

I mean, you said I mean a lot.

Piazza1998-2005 May 14, 2008 at 2:03 pm

I mean… I was feeling kind of mean. I didn’t mean to offend you. I mean it wasn’t like you had to read it. Plus I wrong about Wright going deep. I mean it wasn’t like he was meaning not to… it just didn’t happen,

Tidewater May 13, 2008 at 6:05 pm

If Lannan earned a victory last time out, how can he be 0-3?

Piazza1998-2005 May 13, 2008 at 6:08 pm

I spelled guarantee wrong in my previous post. Which further proves I’m no Joe Namath or even Mark Messier for that matter. But that’s for another time. I wonder how many Mets fans around here noticed the spelling error? Probably alot less than the number of Mets fans who noticed Elijah Dukes last night and his “softball” inspired chanting. Seriously though… who is this guy kidding? I suppose he feels like the only way he can get noticed these days in Major League Baseball is to cheer like a 9 year old from the bench. Real classy buddy. Does anyone else think Lenny Harris or maybe manager Manny Acta should have said something? Both former Mets? I guess they felt like nothing was wrong with it. I did and I hope Maine deposits a fastball in someone’s back.

Tidewater May 13, 2008 at 6:21 pm

What the hell are you talking about at the top of this post?

Piazza1998-2005 May 14, 2008 at 2:07 pm

Why so hostile Tidewater? I was referring to a previous post in which I made a spelling error. Don’t be so jumpy next time. The point of the post was I wanted to see Maine drill somebody and he did. Just ask Felipe Lopez.

Web May 13, 2008 at 6:12 pm

Our lineup is a whole lot better with Castillo in the two-hole. He allows Reyes to do his thing on the bases. Plus it moves Delgado down to the seven-spot where I think a lot of pressure is taken off of him. Also, Ryan Church who is one of hottest hitters right now, would be in a lot of RBI positions if he hit fifth.

Tidewater May 13, 2008 at 6:16 pm

But Castillo is hurt so what are you gonna do, right?

Web May 13, 2008 at 6:33 pm

Yeah I know, I’m just saying. With Castillo in the two spot, I think our lineup is a lot more dangerous.

Tidewater May 13, 2008 at 6:36 pm

It would be great with Pujols in the 4 hole.

mex84 May 13, 2008 at 6:19 pm

Lets go Maine! Your a STOPPER now!

robmenna May 13, 2008 at 6:21 pm

WHO ON THE NATIONALS IS GETTING BUZZED TONIGHT????

jose--jose-jose-jose May 13, 2008 at 7:11 pm

Lopez, lol.

neoncleon May 13, 2008 at 6:25 pm

I think tonight will be a test of the Met’s mettle. After the embarrassing stink-o-rama of last night, it is definitely time to man, or should I say, MAINE up. I want to see some crisp baseball, a dominant Maine pounding the zone, and some timely hitting. A brushback or two would be nice, too.

Tidewater May 13, 2008 at 6:27 pm

Neon Cleon!!!!!! lol!

neoncleon May 13, 2008 at 6:38 pm

It’s got a ring…..

kowalski69 May 13, 2008 at 6:41 pm

Maine throws a ball at Elijah Dukes’ Gut Percentage: 40%

Over/Under

kowalski69 May 13, 2008 at 6:42 pm

Over

ABQMetsFan May 13, 2008 at 6:48 pm

Under.
1. The mets have not shown any intensity on field this year to lead me to believe that they will bean somebody on purpose.
2. It should have happened last night. So, if that idiot does it again tonight, I say get him between the eyes.

ABQMetsFan May 13, 2008 at 6:49 pm

Under

metz1 May 13, 2008 at 6:52 pm

what we need is a 6 game win streak!

metz1 May 13, 2008 at 7:00 pm

i just hope we make the right decisions in the upcoming 2008 amatuer draft!

gipper91375 May 13, 2008 at 7:03 pm

Okay, my fellow Long Islanders, current and former….can we get a “Chaminade boys take bubble baths, together, together!” sing-song taunt going aganist Lannan tonight?

gomets6091 May 13, 2008 at 8:08 pm

why don’t they have stairs at Chaminade?

because fairies….oh, you know the rest.

beltran the warrior May 13, 2008 at 8:19 pm

i went to hellenberg so i can’t comment.

kellenberg = chaminade with girls

gomets6091 May 13, 2008 at 8:30 pm

haha I went to St. Mary’s, not exactly the cream of the CHSAA crop.

Most of my friends went to Kellenberg though…it may have been Chaminade with the girls, but at least they were good looking girls.

gipper91375 May 13, 2008 at 9:07 pm

My cousin played football at Kellenberg then later was a teacher/coach there as was his wife.

atrain311 May 13, 2008 at 11:01 pm

I went to Riverhead High so the ladies weren’t always the hottest… oooh, here comes the wife and she went to RHS too. :)

gipper91375 May 13, 2008 at 7:11 pm

Well, it didn’t take long for Maine to send a message.

gomets6091 May 13, 2008 at 8:08 pm

I missed the first few innings, who did he hit?

Jefferies 9 May 13, 2008 at 7:16 pm

Maine did a better job than Shawn Estes did …

gipper91375 May 13, 2008 at 7:22 pm

LOL. That’s for sure.

Jova1931 May 13, 2008 at 7:19 pm

I said it earlier today, I’m glad he hit someone. He brushed Kent back last week, now this. Great!

Jova1931 May 13, 2008 at 7:20 pm

Jose & D. Wright better be careful.

Gasface77 May 13, 2008 at 7:48 pm

Keith sounds a little tipsy.

gipper91375 May 13, 2008 at 7:53 pm

bases juiced, nobody out, score only one. I wonder if that will come back to bite us in the derriere.

ABQMetsFan May 13, 2008 at 7:57 pm

You are absolutely right. Gotta score more than 1 run in that situation.

gipper91375 May 13, 2008 at 7:59 pm

Yes, it has. Only took 6 minutes.

Wright88 May 13, 2008 at 8:00 pm

with your 8 and 9 hitter up

ABQMetsFan May 13, 2008 at 7:55 pm

There is a good chance it will

WrightsRight May 13, 2008 at 7:55 pm

nice job by reyes

MudvilleNine May 13, 2008 at 7:57 pm

I’d like to say something about Easley but I wont. He dropped his elbow on the throw and as I’ve said with Wright, that happens to infielders. So I give him a pass on that one.

gometzies_18 May 13, 2008 at 7:59 pm

Hey, you can’t blame Gotay – everybody knows who he is, all bat, no glove.

That said I don’t really think he’s much of an overall drop off from Castillo…

WrightsRight May 13, 2008 at 8:00 pm

and THAT’S why you need to score more than 1 run with bases loaded, no outs.

Wright88 May 13, 2008 at 8:03 pm

usually I’d agree, but cmon who didn’t see that coming it was your 8 and 9 hitter. Thats usually 2 auto outs, so it was up to Reyes.

metsjam May 13, 2008 at 8:33 pm

Willie always bunts the pitcher with 1st anf 3rd and one out. I can’t believe that enhances the chances of scoring. It leaves the lead off guy with having to get a 2 out basehit (which is damned near impossible these days). Note that I’m writing this after Maine’s NEXT at bat in which he got a basehit. You never know what’s going to happen.

SayItAintSo May 13, 2008 at 8:06 pm

and reyes suwg at the first pitch as usual.. pitcher on the ropes, first pitch swinging..

TAKE A FEW JOSE.. man on third, who knows?

zen May 13, 2008 at 8:07 pm

the power of christ compels you!

gipper91375 May 13, 2008 at 8:07 pm

So this guy really was supposed to be unable to hit lefties?

What a great trade.

Jefferies 9 May 13, 2008 at 8:07 pm

New drinking game ….

Every time Keith says Bill Webb do a shot ….

You would be drunk every game …

Gasface77 May 13, 2008 at 8:07 pm

Church again…starting to think this guy is for real.

SayItAintSo May 13, 2008 at 8:07 pm

i would marry ryan church, or form a civil union, whatever you say.. HE IS THE MAN!!!!!

gomets6091 May 13, 2008 at 8:10 pm

not if I get there first. Are the Mets playing at Fenway this year?

SayItAintSo May 13, 2008 at 8:08 pm

come on boys… LETS GO METS!!!

SayItAintSo May 13, 2008 at 8:11 pm

WTF??????????

dr jones May 13, 2008 at 8:12 pm

dr jones May 13, 2008 at 8:13 pm

how many first pitch ground outs and pop us have we already seen

MeesesGlokmah May 13, 2008 at 8:14 pm

Way too many.

ABQMetsFan May 13, 2008 at 8:15 pm

Phillies and Marlins are losing. Oh yeah!

MainStMets May 13, 2008 at 8:17 pm

lol gotay doesnt get to that ball, slappy pulls up lame

MudvilleNine May 13, 2008 at 8:18 pm

And thats why I had to give him a pass on the grounder.

IsiahRandolph May 13, 2008 at 8:20 pm

the mets have given up a lot of unearned runs this year

gipper91375 May 13, 2008 at 8:27 pm

Dear Lord that sucks.

SayItAintSo May 13, 2008 at 8:27 pm

ARE YOU FN KIDDING ME REYES?????????

You are officially the 6th best SS in teh NL!!!!!

WTF Happenned to you???

IsiahRandolph May 13, 2008 at 8:27 pm

has reyes gotten slower? or is he running less hard out of the box? what the deuce!!

metsjam May 13, 2008 at 8:34 pm

He’s not as fast as he was a couple of years ago.

Koko May 13, 2008 at 8:29 pm

This is what gets me about the Mets staff.

Maine has only had 5 base runners (2 hits, 1 walk, 1 HBP, 1 on an error). But he has already thrown 74 pitches threw 4 innings. (18.5 per inning)

You look at the Nats pitcher, he has given up 8 baserunners through 4 innings and he still only has 61 pitches.

Of course the bullpen is going to wear down when they are expected to go 3+ innings per game – even if there is a good start by the pitcher.

I’m not sure if it is a philosophy or what, but the staff needs to get a lot more efficient then they are. It’s actually kind of ridiculous because it is effecting everyone on the team, not just the #4 and #5 pitchers.

SayItAintSo May 13, 2008 at 8:30 pm

It is due to the fact that the Mets hitters are not getting deep into the counts.. When was the last 3- count this game???

The opposing pitcher cotinues to be let off the hook by give up hits like reyes just demonstrated.. that shouldve been another ten pitches that inning with 1 out..

Koko May 13, 2008 at 8:34 pm

But it doesn’t hide the fact that the Mets pitchers are inefficient. They have faced guys like are hackers and they don’t put them away quickly. They allow them to work t he count instead of aggressively going after them when they have 2 strikes on them. It’s rare for a Mets pitcher to get an out right after the second strike, unless it was 3-1 or 2-1 (ie if it was 0-2 or 1-2, it usually ends up at 2-2 or 3-2 before the out occurs).

Darryl Strawberry May 13, 2008 at 8:29 pm

We have this guy on his heels and just can’t get the big hit.

shamsky May 13, 2008 at 8:31 pm

Jose Reyes – great talent between the lines, little talent between the ears. Unfortunately in baseball, you need both.

gipper91375 May 13, 2008 at 8:38 pm

That does sum him up.

stickguy May 13, 2008 at 8:32 pm

Reyes is killing them this game. ANd it has been unfortunately a fairly regular occurance.

GIDP? amazing. Better off with the pop ups!

They should have run Lannan out of this game by now. Can’t believe they are just tied. These are the games of lost opportunities that never seem to end well.

at least Delgado has flashed a little leather today. And a bunt, it’s the new Carlos!

IsiahRandolph May 13, 2008 at 8:33 pm

score some runs here!

IsiahRandolph May 13, 2008 at 8:35 pm

another first pitch hack

gipper91375 May 13, 2008 at 8:40 pm

Of course.

Speechless.

MainStMets May 13, 2008 at 8:40 pm

gipper91375 May 13, 2008 at 8:41 pm

Horseshoes and hand grenades.

IsiahRandolph May 13, 2008 at 8:40 pm

this is not our game, series, or year

zen May 13, 2008 at 8:42 pm

i hope you’re enjoying your first season watching baseball.

Koko May 13, 2008 at 8:42 pm

Wow. It’s a tie game, game 2 of 4, Mets are above .500 and it’s not their game, series or year already?

IsiahRandolph May 13, 2008 at 8:46 pm

the mets have a 150 million dollar payroll! we should not be 2 games over .500! extrapolate… we are on pace for 85 wins… but who cares, its only april, right?

and seriously, all the optimistic mets fans seem to have the same generic insult to pessimists: we dont know baseball/we are bandwagons. i frickin play D-I baseball at a school you couldnt even conceive of getting into, so dont tell me i dont know baseball

zen May 13, 2008 at 8:48 pm

“but who cares, its only april, right?”

it’s may on our planet.

IsiahRandolph May 13, 2008 at 8:50 pm

its sarcasm…… i shouldnt have to say that

gipper91375 May 13, 2008 at 8:54 pm

C’mon, zen, that was a valid sarcastic point that Isiah has about the sunshiners and their refrain about April.

zen May 13, 2008 at 8:59 pm

i’m still dreaming of getting into isiah’s second rate university.

darkstar73 May 13, 2008 at 9:04 pm

as far as the optimists go, we’re not saying we ARE going to get better, we’re just holding out the hope that we might just do that, and be a real good team. Its happened, oh, maybe a few times in the history of baseball (‘06 Cards, ‘04 Sox, ‘03 Marlins, ‘02 Angels, just to name a few), so i’m willing to let things ride out. As for as which school you go to, I wouldn’t go throwing that stuff around here, cause you’re bound to get it shoved back down your throat by someone with a little more education then yourself.

shea rocks May 13, 2008 at 9:04 pm

Isiah is playing for a “D-I” baseball team that no-one could get into and, like the rest of us, didn’t so they must not know baseball. I do appreciate your point about the payroll but feel as though just because you play baseball at the collegiate level doesn’t mean you know more than us who haven’t made it.

P.s. In all seriousness if your are in D-I and good then I hope you get drafted to the NY Mets, then traded for a player like Johan!

gomets6091 May 13, 2008 at 9:09 pm

haha nice. And I played baseball in high school with a few guys who were more talented than I am, some of whom went on to play college ball. None of them knew more about the sport than I did: it came naturally to them. I had to work my ass off just to start. I hate that argument, that if you’ve never played a sport at a high level you “don’t know anything about it.”

gipper91375 May 13, 2008 at 9:10 pm

Judging by his comments yesterday,. he seems to be at Cornell. Not exactly a baseball powerhouse nor is it considered one of the better Ivies academically. better than Brown, of course, but that’s about it. ;-)

EliPorter May 13, 2008 at 9:44 pm

andy bernard went to cornell

gipper91375 May 13, 2008 at 8:45 pm

Chill out, Isiah. It’s bad. It isn’t that bad.

Koko May 13, 2008 at 8:52 pm

Just because you play baseball doesn’t mean you know baseball. . . . Now that is a fallacy to think it does.

As for optimists vs. pessimists.

Yes there are things wrong with the Mets, but to come out and say in a tie game in game 2 of a series in early May that the Mets baseball world has come to an end, shows you actually might not know about baseball as much as you think.

How about this, realists vs. pessimists. Realists actually realize where our team stands and what needs to improve/not improve, but don’t go out and claim the end of the Mets world. While pessimists think every thing is the end, regardless of taking the whole picture into consideration.

ninohernes May 13, 2008 at 8:54 pm

Baseball is a game of averages. The season is young. I would rather have the Mets stumble a bit now, rather than at the end of the season. You can’t pe perfect all the time.

IsiahRandolph May 13, 2008 at 8:54 pm

maines gotta learn how to put away hitters with 2 strikes

Koko May 13, 2008 at 8:56 pm

I agree, as my post earlier in this thread. It’s not just Maine, but the entire Mets staff.

SayItAintSo May 13, 2008 at 8:51 pm

when does luis come back???

MudvilleNine May 13, 2008 at 8:53 pm

Maybe I should have said something about him.

Koko May 13, 2008 at 8:54 pm

What someone wants Castillo back? I’m sure all the people that wanted Easily in there fulltime will now say, wait a minute I actually wanted Castillo in at second the whole time.

(not that you were one of them).

dykstraw May 13, 2008 at 8:57 pm

castillo has murdered us with some huge errors at second, too

including one whopper last september 30

MudvilleNine May 13, 2008 at 9:00 pm

I don’t want Easley anywhere near the infield. Said this from day 1. Remeber when Gary was saying how Kent was the only starting 2ndbaseman at the age of 40? There are none at the age of 38 either. The middle infield is a young man’s position, thats why as those players get older, they move to the corner infield positions.

MainStMets May 13, 2008 at 8:52 pm

isiah youve gone off the deep end, i graduated with a guy who was drafted in the 8h round by the M’s and he will be the 1st to tell you he doesnt kno squat abt baseball other than how to mash it, im glad you go to such a fine institution and play baseball

dykstraw May 13, 2008 at 8:55 pm

not that it counts, but for a great defensive catcher, schneider sure likes long tossing with beltran

jose--jose-jose-jose May 13, 2008 at 9:02 pm

He’s been very good throwing the ball this year. I’m pretty sure that he heard the ump call strike 3 and then he took a little bit off that ball and let it fly, possibly to avoid any chance of Easely getting injured on a close play.

IsiahRandolph May 13, 2008 at 8:56 pm

haha im going to cool off- ill concede im getting too wrapped up in the success/failure of this team…

gipper91375 May 13, 2008 at 9:05 pm

Charlie Samuels the longtime clubhouse guy likes to tease Keith by giving 17 to craptastic players.

Retire #17!!!!!!!!!!!!!

gomets6091 May 13, 2008 at 9:11 pm

lets see Keith hit 2 grand slams in an inning, then he can talk.*

*I’m just kidding, I love you Keith, I want your number retired (and I know you’re gonna read this tomorrow with your coffee)

dykstraw May 13, 2008 at 8:59 pm

hey keith! when you log on after the game let us know what you think of fernando tatis’ new number.

IAmKeithHernandez May 13, 2008 at 9:15 pm

The number 17 does not belong on Tatis’s back, I’ll tell you that much Gare.

MainStMets May 13, 2008 at 8:59 pm

tatis does look pretty good tho, i recall him being heavier

Retire 17! Are we just giving the number to everyone now?

gomets6091 May 13, 2008 at 9:12 pm

maybe we should pull out the “Mets Way” and boo the crap out of the guy for taking Hernandez’ #, hopefully ruining his life until he gives it back.

Does anyone else completely hate that completely off key “Lets Go Mets” chant by Kevin James? (I think that’s his name, the guy from King of Queens)

IsiahRandolph May 13, 2008 at 9:07 pm

is it off key for comedy? bc its not funny at all

dykstraw May 13, 2008 at 9:07 pm

weird thing is that he’s a really big mets fan

and it’s not off key, but off tempo

gomets6091 May 13, 2008 at 9:13 pm

right, off tempo….I knew off key wasn’t the right word, but I couldn’t think of the right one.

jose--jose-jose-jose May 13, 2008 at 9:10 pm

It is absolutely awful. Bring back the “Network” guy!

SayItAintSo May 13, 2008 at 9:05 pm

he ran out of the box like a benchwarmer sent up to pinch hit in a ten run game…
that was totally pathetic

exactly what I mean……….that was gross

darkstar73 May 13, 2008 at 9:07 pm

I think I just became religious…

WrightsRight May 13, 2008 at 9:07 pm

The question is: who is the real Reyes? 2006 Reyes or June through Present Reyes?

darkstar73 May 13, 2008 at 9:09 pm

that’s not really the question, the question is, will Reyes ever be able to fully bottle all of talent on a consistent basis. He’s emensely talented, he’ll be a good player over the course of a season, but it’s yet to be seen if he can be an MVP type player, which he’s capble of.

gipper91375 May 13, 2008 at 9:12 pm

As somebody said above, he has immense talent between the lines, but a bit challenged between the ears. Let’s hope somebody gets through to that head of his.

Chan Ho Parking Lot May 13, 2008 at 9:16 pm

Whatever he did in the second half 2006 is what he should be trying to duplicate. He was patient, took walks and hammered balls all over the place.

Chan Ho Parking Lot May 13, 2008 at 9:14 pm

2006 was a very good year for him. 2007 was a regression. This year (so far) is looking like it might be a carbon copy of 2007 again (unless he gets hot and takes off like he did in the second half of 2006).

Koko May 13, 2008 at 9:07 pm

Tatis looked funny as he approached second. Like he was going to stumble or something. . .

Nice hit??

Chan Ho Parking Lot May 13, 2008 at 9:07 pm

Good god Kearns is terrible.

I_Need_More_Cowbell_Please May 13, 2008 at 9:09 pm

deep breaths.. the ball is in the hands of the pen

ExileInLA May 13, 2008 at 9:09 pm

Funny, but while we heard Lastings talk about going out and beating the Mets, I didn’t hear Ryan Church talking to the media about how he wants to go out and beat the Nats…he just went and DID IT.

jose--jose-jose-jose May 13, 2008 at 9:11 pm

Word

I_Need_More_Cowbell_Please May 13, 2008 at 9:12 pm

first , i think Church is a professional that keeps personal opinions to himself or at least in the locker room. second, i think he’s glad he got traded

Wondy May 13, 2008 at 9:10 pm

Well, at least we get to see what the new guys can do right away.

robmenna May 13, 2008 at 9:10 pm

Where would we be without Church and Santana??

All those Minaya bashers this offseason should be kissing his arse

SayItAintSo May 13, 2008 at 9:11 pm

now why would he go to wise in thisgame????

he just came up, why not smith???

MudvilleNine May 13, 2008 at 9:15 pm

Your real question should be what is Heilman doing up in the bullpen.

MudvilleNine May 13, 2008 at 9:19 pm

Must have been a snafu in communication. Looks like they corrected it, sat him down, and got Sanchez up.

Koko May 13, 2008 at 9:20 pm

It’s Sanchez now.

MudvilleNine May 13, 2008 at 9:24 pm

Must have been a reflex action on Heilman’s part. Said to himself it’s near the 8th inning, let me get up and start loosening. Bullpen coach must have went over to him and reminded him he lost that spot.

Gasface77 May 13, 2008 at 9:15 pm

Anyone watching The Zen of Bobby V. I would love to stay tuned to the game, but this is much more fascinating. He’s the man.

didnt you hear the cheers all over queens???

gipper91375 May 13, 2008 at 9:17 pm

Huh? No he didn’t he was warming in the pen. Sosa and Figgy got DFA’d.

Cornell “scholar-athlete” needs to work on his reading comprehension. Unsurprising.

playmaker3128 May 13, 2008 at 9:21 pm

Be interesting to see how sanchez pitches tonight. I know alot of people had a problem with willie bringing him in last night. However if you noticed last night, sanchez threw alot of fastballs. In his previous couple of outings he’s been afraid to throw it. It was good for him to get out there and work on his fastball a bit and maybe gain some more confidence in it. If he’s going to be successful he’s gonna need it.

ExileInLA May 13, 2008 at 9:26 pm

Why pull Wise after 12 pitches?

Except for Johnson and one guy on the bench, everyone on WAS is a lefty. Willie should have left Wise in; after 2 batters, then he can go to Feliciano or Show for Johnson, and switch back to Sanchez later if needed. Then, if they get WAS 1-2-3 in the 8th, if the Mets score again in the 9th, the lefty finishes it up; if not, Sanchez comes in for the first righty…

This is why the pen is burned…

SayItAintSo May 13, 2008 at 9:22 pm

we need more from 456 than a 123 inning

SayItAintSo May 13, 2008 at 9:23 pm

It happened. If I hadn’t seen it, I wouldn’t have believed it.

Koko May 13, 2008 at 9:30 pm

Well in the real world most managers today don’t go more then 1 inning with their closer, regardless of who it is.

I’m fine with it. Wagner has shown that he has trouble finishing seasons at his age anyway.

gipper91375 May 13, 2008 at 9:36 pm

oklametsfan May 13, 2008 at 9:37 pm

you’re right. i cant believe david threw it into right field and that run scored and now Sanchez has to get out of a 2nd and 3rd jam.

Oh, wait.

therealsince86 May 13, 2008 at 9:38 pm

Hey wait a minute calm down. I am one of the biggest Mets supporters on here. I was just thinking that was an easier play. I know it gets rough on here but before you jump on someone show some respect.

gomets6091 May 13, 2008 at 9:40 pm

Im with thereal here….that was a legit baseball question that deserved a legit baseball answer. I didn’t sense a hint of team bashing in that one

Well I do apologize Aretha. Didnt mean to pile on.

MudvilleNine May 13, 2008 at 9:42 pm

Oh that Lastings, LOL.

MudvilleNine May 13, 2008 at 9:43 pm

You think we’ll see “Thrilledge4prez” tonight or tomorrow?

Koko May 13, 2008 at 9:39 pm

Honestly this Umps strike zone is pretty damn inconsistent. I can live with a bad strike zone as long as it is consistent, but his is all over the place depending on how he feels that second.

SayItAintSo May 13, 2008 at 9:40 pm

THERE YOU GO JOSE!!!!

backinbusiness May 13, 2008 at 9:42 pm

I thought Lastings had some decent promise, but I gotta admit, I smile when he drops the ball.

Darryl Strawberry May 13, 2008 at 9:42 pm

Why is Jose in the dugout?

Koko May 13, 2008 at 9:44 pm

He got benched for getting a hit.

MainStMets May 13, 2008 at 9:43 pm

nice hit, nice fielding job by millz

why was jose in the dugout as SNY went to commercial?

the Straw May 13, 2008 at 9:44 pm

It did work out…but I would disagree with sending Schneider there…Church is coming up and his our hottest hitter. I would not have chanced it….but good thing we traded Spilledge to Washington.

gomets6091 May 13, 2008 at 9:45 pm

he’s still on the bases…you sure you saw him in the dugout?

EliPorter May 13, 2008 at 9:45 pm

MainStMets May 13, 2008 at 9:46 pm

backinbusiness May 13, 2008 at 9:49 pm

can you do that? i mean, had the nats stepped on 1st, would he have been out? that’s just weird.

Koko May 13, 2008 at 9:51 pm

I think it’s basically a TO since it was a pitching change. If not then the Mets could continue to steal bases as the pitcher comes in, etc. He probably need to adjust something or get a drink of water.

backinbusiness May 13, 2008 at 9:46 pm

Life in the later innings by the Mets! Woot!

4 RBIs for Church against his old team. Ryan Church ain’t no softball cheerleader.

SayItAintSo May 13, 2008 at 9:47 pm

Wondy May 13, 2008 at 9:49 pm

Actually, yeah…a lot of those “anti-aging” clinics where everyone gets their HGH are based out of Fla……

backinbusiness May 13, 2008 at 9:48 pm

You see Marlon waving Jose back there? Add that to him being the one to call the player’s only meeting last colla…September, and my love for Marlon runs ever deeper.

zeekster May 13, 2008 at 9:48 pm

can we pore the champagne yet?

Koko May 13, 2008 at 9:49 pm

With a three run lead, I think Wagner should plunk Dukes for leading the cheers yesterday.

Okay, I kid.

Actually I have little problem with them cheering. As they say, if you want to shut them up, shut them down.

gomets6091 May 13, 2008 at 9:50 pm

Church and Wright are currently on pace for 130 and 140 RBI, respectively. Obviously those projections almost never hold up, but how nice would it be if those two push each other all year making a run at Piazza’s franchise record of 124? It’d be like in ‘06 when Wright, Beltran, and Delgado were all making a run at that number.

MudvilleNine May 13, 2008 at 9:51 pm

Sit right down Dukie, Sit right down…clap, clap

therealsince86 May 13, 2008 at 9:51 pm

And that is why we can’t always blame Willie. He had a 1 man bench last night.

EliPorter May 13, 2008 at 9:51 pm

that was greeeattt

Wright88 May 13, 2008 at 9:52 pm

Interesting note, Gomez has 3x as many HRs as Edge. I always liked Gomez way more than Edge. He’s going to be an exciting player for years to come in the AL.

darkstar73 May 13, 2008 at 9:59 pm

gomez is also just a humble kid, full of talent, but just humble, just loves to play ball and show you what he’s got on the field, by making plays.

backinbusiness May 13, 2008 at 9:53 pm

Perhaps the Sosa/Figgy DFA have lit a fire under the other player’s behinds…(“this can happen to me”)…one can hope.

EliPorter May 13, 2008 at 9:58 pm

“put it in the books”

darkstar73 May 13, 2008 at 9:58 pm

remember that guy who use dto post on here like every single day about how Milledge was going to be a star this year because he was doing so great in spring training, and that Church was nothing because he wasn’t doing so great in spring training? I miss that guy…ha!

Jova1931 May 13, 2008 at 10:03 pm

It’s still early. I thought this would be a good trade for the Mets, but not GREAT, which it’s been so far. I know it’s early but Church has been fantastic and Schneider has hit a lot more than we could have ever thought.

darkstar73 May 13, 2008 at 10:05 pm

oh i know its still early, it was just funny how adamant that guy was that we’d miss MIlledge THAT much. He was providing daily updates of spring training stats of Milledge on here, it was just amusing, and now he’s no where to be found.

gipper91375 May 13, 2008 at 10:15 pm

ExileInLA May 13, 2008 at 9:59 pm

OT: Keppinger fouled a ball off his knee in the 2nd inning. After working a walk, and playing til the 4th, he left the game — having broken his kneecap.

Tough guy — bad break…

Koko May 13, 2008 at 10:01 pm

Yeah, I like him and always have. I wish Omar had never traded him for Gotay to begin with. He’d be the perfect backup for the team, if not starter at second base.

therealsince86 May 13, 2008 at 10:02 pm

Do you honestly think he would still be here if we had not traded him? He was released by others.

cafuq May 13, 2008 at 10:02 pm

except for the broken kneecap

Jova1931 May 13, 2008 at 10:03 pm

He’s going to be a lifetime backup.

therealsince86 May 13, 2008 at 10:04 pm

Nice story but I just don’t care.

darkstar73 May 13, 2008 at 10:06 pm

it’s true, KC released him, good to see a guy getting a chance and running with it though, too bad about the injury.

Hey guys… a new documentary on Bobby v called the Zen of Bobby v is on right now on espn 2.. check it out its amazing.. about his life in japan

EliPorter May 13, 2008 at 10:08 pm

now thats a coach with character

therealsince86 May 13, 2008 at 10:09 pm

Now that’s a character that coaches.

gomets6091 May 13, 2008 at 10:14 pm

Im watching it now…looks like he has the same problem with closers over there he had over here.

dr jones May 13, 2008 at 10:20 pm

I am a huge Bobby V guy,, I’m sure thats clear, but we need to try and get this guy back here.. He wants a WS championship and we have the kids and vets to achieve this in the next few years.. Lets bring bobby v back. I truly feel he is supposed to be a mets and the guy that takes us back to the promise land

Gasface77 May 13, 2008 at 10:26 pm

I am watching it now and it is amazing. I always loved Bobby V and watching this has only made me respect him more. After seeing this, I am almost honored that he was the manager of the Mets. Like him or not, he is a unique person who absolutely LOVES baseball.

metsfan119 May 13, 2008 at 10:30 pm

He was a fantastic Xs and Os manager who was great at inspiring his teams to overachieve (a quality not found in overrated managers like Joe Torre). If I were the Mets GM I’d hire him yesterday, unfortunately the rift between him and the Wilpons is probably too deep.

dwrightisgod May 13, 2008 at 10:08 pm

i was extremely critical of the lastings trade but wow i take it all back. great job by omar. this guy has been incredible thus far. he smokes every ball he sees.

dykstraw May 13, 2008 at 10:13 pm

feeeeeeel the LOOOOOVE

metsfan119 May 13, 2008 at 10:25 pm

Watching that documentary of Bobby V brings back memories of when I actually had confidence in the Mets manager. It’s been awhile. By the way, that Hagan guy on the radio truly blows.

Gasface77 May 13, 2008 at 10:36 pm

All of your statements are 100% true.

dr jones May 13, 2008 at 10:46 pm

This is the first time I’ve seen this… I can’t believe how lucky we were. They truly worship him there.. What a feeling that must be for him.. Good for him.. on that not…

Lets get him back..

Bob-by Val-en-tine- clapclap,, clapclapclap

dykstraw May 13, 2008 at 11:14 pm

there’s is no way he’s leaving what he has there

The Glider May 13, 2008 at 10:54 pm

You Bobby V fans kill me. You all were probably dogging him back then, when he managed the Mets, for overmanaging and making too many double switches, and letting Al Leiter and Johnny Franco for running the team (remember????)

If Jim Leyland was managing the Mets, fan would be dogging him too.

They’ve been dogging Charlie Manuel in Philly for being a big dope . . . until he won.

Pu-leeeez.

The Glider May 13, 2008 at 10:56 pm

(Pardon my poor grammar; forgot to proof read . . . again.)

. . . and, btw, I liked Bobby V. But when it was time to go, it was time to go.

metsfan119 May 13, 2008 at 10:59 pm

I never accused Bobby V of being incompetent (as opposed to our current manager). The Wilpons were the main culprit in the Mets post-2000 downfall.

dr jones May 13, 2008 at 11:02 pm

Bobby V was the only great coach this organization has had in almost 20 years. Have some respect .

The Glider May 13, 2008 at 11:24 pm

Hey, hey, hey . . . speaking of showing some respect, I think you need to excuse yourself for not naming Gil Hodges and Davey Johnson in that category.

dykstraw May 13, 2008 at 11:31 pm

“almost 20 years”
