the buzz from shea suggests Luis Castillo could still end up on the disabled list, though he continues to tell reporters that such a move is not necessary

…if the disabled list was a parking lot, castillo would have a spot with his name on it…

with all of his injuries how often does he really end up on the dl?

DK May 14, 2008 at 9:29 am

WOnder how long before Tatis will take over at 2B?

darkstar73 May 14, 2008 at 9:39 am

not as often as the guy who is taking over Matt’s job thinks he does. He writes this post as if Castillo is Alou or El Duque or someone.

Regis Courtemanche May 14, 2008 at 9:42 am

Don’t worry, Matt will be back soon, I couldn’t even pretend to do his job. And you’re right about Castillo, as he has played the majority of each season since ‘99, but it’s all in good fun. He just seems to be ailing from something all too often lately.

therealsince86 May 14, 2008 at 9:49 am

That was a low comment. Castillo is very rarely on the DL and has played as many games in a season as most 2B in the league.

Dirtysanchez May 14, 2008 at 9:17 am

saw this coming……
kinda sux too as he was just starting to heat up and be a good #2 guy. The lineup looked good with him in there. Hope he can come back soon and get into the swing of things

Anyone know where Jose Valentin is? Last I heard he was going back to St. Lucie to rehab. He would be a good fit while Castillo is out. He’d play much better defense than Easley.

Gregg May 14, 2008 at 9:26 am

Easley has been doing a pretty decent job at 2nd base aside from yesterday’s debacle. He’s just as good a hitter as Valentin (better in my opinion) and can play in the outfield as well. I’d rather keep Easley.

cyclone May 14, 2008 at 9:41 am

I would like to think yesterday’s game for Easley was an abberation as well….hopefully it was just one off night…

dontstopbelieving May 14, 2008 at 9:45 am

Yeah, I think he’s still in rehab…given his condition I’d be shocked if he could handle playing every day, if he winds up playing again at all. I would love to see Marlon Anderson get some starts, though…given his production for us last year, I don’t quite understand why Easley and not Anderson is the default option when Castillo goes down. I know Anderson’s our premier lefty pinch-hitter, but if the guy’s good enough, he should be getting 4 ABs a game, not 1. Why not an Anderson-Easley platoon?

kandiman May 14, 2008 at 9:54 am

There was a tough lefty on the mound last night and easley is hitting over .400 against lefties. I would assume Anderson would be in there against a tough righty.

mza4eva May 14, 2008 at 10:07 am

Anderson was so bad at 2B they moved him to the outfield, remember. He could probably play there in a pinch, but he has less range than easly. That would make a massive hole on the right side

Nate W. May 14, 2008 at 10:47 am

I hope they dont pair Delgado and Anderson up on the side of the IF. Lots of ‘empty net goals’ allowed with them paired up…

41 franchise May 14, 2008 at 11:08 am

Because when these teams pay the big bucks they tend to try to have the stiff play and hope he justifies the signing.

I’m still in shock today that the Mets are going to eat Sosa’s contract in favor of Joe Smith(right move about time).

In years past you could guarantee that Freddy”formally ” Coupon would of had Smith ride the New Orleans shuttle to save a few bucks.

What a novel idea letting players play who produce and not base it on what you are paying them.

followmelevi May 14, 2008 at 11:47 am

It isn’t always about money. We are potentially losing a (potentially good) reliever if Sosa doesn’t make it through waivers… he may end up finding himself again and be a very good reliever for us. I think that was difficult part of the Mets roster decision.. it wasn’t so much about the money as it was about losing Sosa for the year.

stickguy May 14, 2008 at 9:45 am

just get him on the DL. Let everything rest and heal, instead of playing a man short for another week, or rushing him back and having him aggrevate something.

Too bad there isn’t a 2B prospect ready to call up for a taste of the show (there isn’t, is there?) Don’t know who they would call up, but IMO Easley shouldn’t be out there every day.

mza4eva May 14, 2008 at 9:46 am

just don’t let him pinch hit or pinch runner or anything so they can put him on the dl retro to Sunday

Maine Event May 14, 2008 at 10:04 am

The buzz from metsblog suggests Matthew Cerrone has been kidnapped

Nate W. May 14, 2008 at 10:45 am

“well played”

;)

UnclePauly May 14, 2008 at 10:22 am

How many more years of this guy??

mza4eva May 14, 2008 at 10:27 am

his contract expires 2011

DK May 14, 2008 at 10:41 am

He will be our 8th batter for the next 2 years then the Mets will eat his salary… Prob get a tax credit somewhere.

mza4eva May 14, 2008 at 11:09 am

donate him to charity…like a used car you don’t want to go through the hassel of selling

Nate W. May 14, 2008 at 10:45 am

Of all the moves that took place yesterday, DLing Pagan so Tatis could replace a lame Castillo didnt seem like a fair deal.

I though they may be saving Castillo’s DL stint as a way to recall Joe Smith after a one day option, but they dont need another pitcher until 5/24 now. I could see them carrying a lame Castillo for 10 days, they’ve done it with Schneider this year, and Beltran in years gone by.

41 franchise May 14, 2008 at 11:00 am

Could go down as one of the worst signings ever(for my money Vince M-80 Coleman is the all timer) for the Mets. Giving a one legged slap hitter a FOUR year deal just because he is buddies with Johan.

If/when he does play why doesn’t he hit from the right side all the time. Lefty he can barely get the ball out of the infield.

Anyone notice that Reyes problems tend to coincide with Castillo being brought aboard? Just a coincidence? Hmm.

Omar should have gone with just a veteran platoon and saved some dough.

therealsince86 May 14, 2008 at 11:06 am

And added a ton of runs to our pitchers ERA because of defense.

41 franchise May 14, 2008 at 11:11 am

You could get the same offensive and defense production from Anderson Hernandez and not have to worry about the extra runs.
If you are worried about defense Hernandez could do the job at 2b and have saved the team a ton of $$$.

41 franchise May 14, 2008 at 11:14 am

I don’t think you’ll be thinking of all the extra runs when little Luis is leaving 5-6 guys a night on base batting in the 2 hole.
You’ll be too busy(like me) retriving the remote control from wherever you threw it.

therealsince86 May 14, 2008 at 11:50 am

Are you serious? You think Anderson Hernandez can hit .300 with an OBP of .360?

mza4eva May 14, 2008 at 12:20 pm

I dont this AHern can hit .300 w/ an OBP of .360 but then again I do think he can hit .245 which is what Castillo is hitting

41 franchise May 14, 2008 at 1:08 pm

Let me know when the Castillo from his Marlin days shows up.
All we are stuck with now is a one legged slap hitter that can’t hit lefthanded anymore.

darkstar73 May 14, 2008 at 11:34 am

why can’t you just blame reyes for sucking, why does there need to be a scapegoat? I could care less what coincides with what, Reyes should be man enough to step up and play to his abilities despite anything else going on. That being said, Castillo is a winner and accusing him of bringing reyes down is nonsense.

41 franchise May 14, 2008 at 1:05 pm

Why all the love for Luis? He is a shell of the player he once was and will prove to be a huge waste of money to this team. He is an old 32.
If he does ever bat 2 again watch how many runners are left in scoring position as he slaps a ball to 2nd.

Signed him as a #2 hitter and he can’t do that.

Omar knew he had leg/knee trouble and still signed him.

Dwright4life May 14, 2008 at 11:02 am

Castillo,

on the DL?

Hey, let’s give him 4 years. In fact he is such a big addition, we only need him for 2 years. Then we can waste 12 million dollars for the remaining 2 because ……money grows on trees.

Any way you look at it. This is a terrible signing!
