I was hoping to see Castro tonight and Schneider tomorrow. I know Pelfrey pitched a lot better with castro last time but I think tomorrow is a key start for his confidence for the remainder of the year.

I’m not a Willie basher but I don’t like this decision. It is more than one game. It is about getting Pelfrey back on track.

    • ags412 says:

Remember though, Vargas pitched to Schneider for 3 years in Montreal/Washington. Vargas said in his interview yesterday the chance to work with Schneider was one of the reasons he signed with the Mets this spring. So might as well make him as comfortable as possible.

As for Pelfrey, he looked good with Castro (who is better defensively than Casanova anyway), so I think Big Pelf will be fine.

    • chicagometfan says:

I don’t disagree with wanting to have Schneider catch Pelfrey but he has to rest either today or tomorrow and the other side of the coin is that there is a lefty pitching tomorrow. schneider is hot right now and hitting 100 points higher against righties that lefties and castro hits lefties better tha righties. Plus Pelf pitched great last time out wit Castro behind the plate. So there is no reason to make a “Willie is wrong” judgement on this case

      • bvaz says:

Well, Pelfrey pitched better last time out. Definitely not as good as early int he year with Schneider.
I’m definitely not trying to Willie bash. I actually think he gets WAY too much blame. I just look at pelfrey and think he can be the key to this team this year. I just think having another good start tomorrow is a lot bigger than one game in the standings and lefty vs lefty match ups.
Who knows. maybe Schneider gets the game winning hit and Castro hits a 3 run HR tomorrow. When I was looking at the schedule over the weekend and saw the day game after a night game, I was hoping Schneider would get the day game for this reason.

Either way, Let’s hope they can get these two games and finish the homestand at 5-2.

  2. Runshouse says:

“Vargas earned a win throwing seven scoreless innings allowing four runs while striking out six. ”

    Huh????? Scoreless… and four runs?

  3. mex84 says:

Lets go Mets! Need a W for Vargas and his first of hopefully many Mets starts!

  4. Kellman says:

Have there been any comments about the new red font? I prefer the old color. Am I alone on this?

  5. stellar says:

I started seeing the red links a few days ago. I’m using Safari.

    • Kellman says:

      Yeah, it’s safari for me.

      • Koko says:

Yeah only on safari. Well I only use it on the iPhone. Safari blows anyway, Download firefox peeps or at least Camino (mac centric version of mozilla).

The red font is only on the hyper-links for me though, not anything else.

  6. Kellman says:

All names are in red for me? This is only on my computer?

  7. Koko says:

The one thing I wish Willie did do (and I’m not a basher) is that if he knows guys like Alou, Castillo (when he is in), etc can’t play a day game after a night game, that he gives one of them off during the night game and the other off during the day game. This way the team isn’t short handed all at once.

Makes sense in my head. . . .

  8. Metdamage says:

Vargas has decent stuff but he is slow to the plate.

Off topic, I’m getting sick of watching this Jeter commercial.

  9. Jova1931 says:

Is it just me or does Vargas look very much like Oliver Perez?? Physically that is.

    • gomets6091 says:

ah you beat me to it. I was thinking the exact same thing. When I first turned the game on I thought it was Ollie pitching, until I saw he was a righty.

  10. SantanaCYYOung says:

was that the quickest half inning i’ve ever seen?

  11. Metdamage says:

I love it when Gary Cohen blasts the opposing team.

  12. andyglass1 says:

F-Mart hurt his ankle stealing 2nd in B-ham tonight ? dont like the sound of that. lets hope for the best

  13. Koko says:

Anyone see Vargas’ dance after the top of the 1st, mocking the Nats?

    Good stuff

  14. The Glider says:

    Props to Delglovo. NIce play.

  15. The Glider says:

Vargas is already better than Pelfrey.

  16. gipper91375 says:

That was way too much underwear talk for one half-inning.

  17. KinersKornerman says:

Zimmerman is 4 for 42 with RISP. If he played in NY, fans would be burning him in effigy in the parking lot.

  18. dr jones says:

I’m liking this Vargas guy.. So far so good..

    • Metdamage says:

drjones nice debate from earlier. I agree with you about Vargas.

      • dr jones says:

hells yea,, I totally agree. You made some really good points and I had to scramble a few times. It was tough cause I was really debating 3 different people at the same time. Just glad I made it out of there alive. Was much fun

  19. AlouIsNasty says:

Anyone know the name of Schneider’s song for when he comes to bat? (Not “Sweetest Girl,” the other one)

  20. ryno says:

Dukes got thrown out of a minor league game while rehabbing?? That’s fantastic. Too bad the guy the Nats hired to keep him in line off the field can’t come up to bat with him.

    • Koko says:

I can’t wait to see what trouble Dukes and Milledge get into together in the near future. . . Maybe none, but where there is smoke. . . . .

      • metsfan119 says:

Dukes threatened the life of his wife and daughter and has been in trouble with the law on mutliple occasions, comparing him to Milledge is ridiculous.

  21. Booooooooooooooo says:

Kazmir signed a 3-year, $28.5 million extension with the Rays.

    • metsfan119 says:

Apparently they’ve looked past his clubhouse music tastes

    • ryno says:

“Kazmir gets the use of a luxury suite for five home games each year, and he would receive am $800,000 the first time he’s traded.”

I’m just guessing he won’t need the first part of that sentence, but the second part will certainly pop up in a couple years.

  22. MainStMets says:

    thoughts so far…

dukes/pena are f’n HUGE –look more like LBs for the skins then OF for the nats

I liked the interview w carton/boomer–theyre hilarious in the AM drive everyday—would like to maybe see them do some mets work over the course of they ear to give the booth a break

Vargas– so far so good, thru 4 innings–the guy does have some talent

Delgados play on the bunt was awesome, he looked good

  23. metsfan119 says:

Ok, I think it’s time to hit this guy now

  24. KinersKornerman says:

Hey Redding has a no-hitter going.
    There, I said it.

    • The Glider says:

He’s already pitched a 1-hitter against the Phillies (and Cole Hamels) to beat them 1-0.

  25. MainStMets says:

oh man you mean we wont be able to sign kazmir to a free agent deal and erase the miserable deal from the pre Omar days lol

wish his arm would stay together

    • Booooooooooooooo says:

At least he won’t be signing with the Phillies, Braves or Yankees. At least not yet. Talk about pouring salt in the wound.

  26. metsfan119 says:

Don’t try to steal, let’s try to have a big inni…..good start

  27. MudvilleNine says:

Which is why he’s not a good 2-hole hitter. I’d rather take a few pitches and see if Reyes can steal second to get himself in scoring position for me so I can drive him in. Church just doesnt do that.

    • HOFMets57 says:

      Agreed.

Castillo IS the better 2-hole hitter. Alas, with Luis struggling (and limping for that matter) and Church on fire, Willie is doing the right thing by putting Ryan behind Jose…

      • MudvilleNine says:

Well he has no choice thats true and it has been working so I dont really have a problem with it. I just wish Hojo would approach Church and tell him it might be in his best interests to take a few to let Jose steal a base.

        • HOFMets57 says:

I would argue against that, actually.

Once Luis comes back, Ryan is reverted back to being a 5th/6th-hole slugger. His approach should be retained seeing as how his slugging approach proves optimal down in that particular part of the batting order.

        • MudvilleNine says:

It really doesnt take much to change approaches and just the curse of having to move around in the order. Thing is he’s been getting up with Jose on and swinging at the first or second pitch almost all the time lately and those pitches really weren’t pitches in his wheelhouse that he can drive. He’s popping them up way too many times. I mean he can wait, he’s going to see more than one fastball with Jose on first.

  28. Metdamage says:

I’m surprised to see this team is fourth in runs per game.

    • HOFMets57 says:

Let’s hope this team (specifically, the Carloses) start slugging some dingers.

  29. metsfan119 says:

I knew that was going to be caught

    • KinersKornerman says:

IN the 0.5 seconds it took to get to Zim’s glove, when did you know?

      • metsfan119 says:

When I saw the trajectory of the ball off of Beltran’s bat going right toward Zimmerman, before they switched from the centerfield cam.

  30. InsaneMetsFan says:

    There’s some bad luck.

  31. HOFMets57 says:

    Claudio is looking good.

Hopefully, he actualizes his stuff and becomes our fifth starter. I’m afraid of another rotating 5th-spot a-la Lima/Park/J.Vargas/D.Williams…

    • The Glider says:

Send Pelfrey down to AAA to work on a curve ball, or something, when Pedro comes back. Keep Vargas as number 5. Omar, Omar, Omar.

      • MudvilleNine says:

Funny. Same thing was said after Figgy’s first start.

        • The Glider says:

Figgy looks like a Little Leaguer standing on that mound. At least Vargas throws 90-92 and looks like he has some poise up there. In any event, it’s apparent that Figueroa is not the answer. We don’t know that Vargas isn’t.

          : P

        • MudvilleNine says:

Well I’m just not jumping on the Vargas bandwagon yet because of what happened with Figgy. But you can reserve a seat on it for me. :)

  32. nova86 says:

that was a nice prance by alou

  33. Metdamage says:

Vargas has a confidence that Pelfrey hasn’t shown yet. if Vargas continues to pitch like this with Pedro looming, Pelfrey might be the odd man out.

    • Wondy says:

Certainly possible, but that might be jumping the gun a bit….don’t forget the Nats are one of the worst-hitting teams in the league.

  34. dr jones says:

they were just talking about Redding wearing number 17 and it got me thinking

We have only retired Seaver’s number. Do any of you think that Keith’s number should be retired?

    • KinersKornerman says:

      I think we all do.

      • KinersKornerman says:

        Keith, are you reading this?

        • dr jones says:

I should of rephrase the question.. Do you guys think the Mets will ever retire his number.. If so wouldn’t it be appropriate to do it at Shea and not at city field.

  35. Woodside20 says:

I thought Alou was gonna pull a Delmon Young just now.

  36. ness589 says:

Nice to see Willie go out and defend Alou…..

    • nova86 says:

there was no time dummy, no use getting tossed for no reason

    • MudvilleNine says:

      and what was needed defended?

      • ness589 says:

He should have done more than just stand at the top of the dugout and watch. Go talk to the ump and tell him you’re pissed he was ejected quickly. Worst case scenario is he gets ejected (which is probably a good thing since he’s useless).

        • MudvilleNine says:

Did you ever play baseball? There are several things you can do that gets you tossed out and that was one of them. There was nothing to argue. Everyone on that field knows you do that its automatic. So, there was nothing to argue. Find something else to complain about with Willie.

    • Metdamage says:

I guess he could have in the millisecond it took for Alou to get tossed.

      • ness589 says:

You guys are missing the point. It doesn’t matter if Alou was ejected in a second. It matters that Willie just let it happen. You think Bobby Cox would have just watched that and done nothing? No. The players need to know Willie has their back. He clearly doesn’t.

        • MudvilleNine says:

Bobby Cox wouldnt have done a thing. You dont seem to get the point. Every player on that bench knows you cant do what Alou did. There was nothing to defend.

        • Booooooooooooooo says:

“You think Bobby Cox would have just watched that and done nothing?”

No way. He would have gotten pissed and smacked his wife.

        • MudvilleNine says:

          LOL

  37. BlueTrane says:

    low AND outside…

  38. AlouIsNasty says:

is delagado getting booed or am I hearing things?

  39. gipper91375 says:

Schneid gets the Mets off the Schnied!

  40. edwin nieves says:

    Schneider’s song is, “Goodbye Charlie”!!!

  41. AlouIsNasty says:

And is Cohen especially playful tonight? He is making me laugh more than Keith

    • gipper91375 says:

Gary’s stoked for his return to the Upper Deck tomorrow.

      • AlouIsNasty says:

I would be too, I live in VT now and I haven’t been up there since I was a kid. I am only 20 still but it feels so long ago.

        • gipper91375 says:

I haven’t been up thers since I was a kid, either.

Frankly, I’ll take the field boxes anyday. I don’t miss the UD.

        • AlouIsNasty says:

I plan on making the drive down for a couple more games at Shea in July, but I will definitely not be in the upper deck. The reason you go there as a kid is for the novelty of being that high up, it’s Shea, it’s like a skyscraper.

  42. MainStMets says:

seems to be a light night w comments tonight

    hmmmm…

  43. metsfan119 says:

Nice, I’m liking the double plays

  44. The Glider says:

Delglovo with the nice scoop on the double play.

    Delglovo for Delgoldo glovo.

  45. backinbusiness says:

just got in and all i see is “endy chavez in left.” please tell me alou is not hurt.

  46. The Glider says:

    Crap!

We need to win this game. What are the Phillies doing?

  47. gipper91375 says:

    That Zimmerman HR was crushed.

  48. MainStMets says:

6 IP 5K 3H 1ER from guy just called up?

    I’ll sign for that

  49. metsfan119 says:

Alou’s got to learn to chill, that was the same ape-sh&t reaction that he had after the Bartman incident. Hopefully, it doesn’t come back to burn the Mets this game.

  50. Koko says:

Vargas gives us 6 innings of 1 run ball, it’s a huge win. . . Anything above that is god like for a 4th or 5th starter.

He’s at 89 pitches, so he might get a shot at inning 7 depending on how good of a shape he is in.

    • Nightlife says:

Yeah, really couldn’t have asked for a much better start than this from Vargas tonight. I think he can go one more and hopefully we will score some runs.

  51. The Glider says:

Way to come back by Vargas after the mammoth HR by Z-man.

  52. MainStMets says:

wow! all the jose haters need to calm down, after seeing that graphic they just showed on SNY

jose has been legit since ‘05

    • metsfan119 says:

All that graphic proved was that when Reyes plays well the Mets play well, I don’t think any Reyes hater would disagree with that.

  53. MainStMets says:

    3rd in games
    2nd in runs
    2nd in hits

    pretty impressive

    • zen says:

      reyes is a great player.

it’s too bad that too many expect him to walk on water.

  54. The Glider says:

    DW going long . . . now!

  55. Nightlife says:

Man. At least Reyes is going deep into counts tonight which is a very good sign.

  56. I_Need_More_Cowbell_Please says:

can someone at least run up the pitch count?? we need to get Redding out of the game!

  57. metsfan119 says:

I see Tom Glavine is working his way into blowing his 8-0 lead. Wow, thank GOD the Mets got rid of that guy

  58. Metdamage says:

    Immediate boo’s for Heilman

    • Wondy says:

Ugh…he’s the one guy that seems to listen to them, too.

      • Koko says:

Maybe they should wait to boo him until he actually does something that day.

        Talk about demoralizing.

  59. MainStMets says:

i cringe when the pen door opens and i see heilmans puss face emerge

  60. backinbusiness says:

heilman’s got pena, flores, redding. i’m pretty sure i can get them out, at least wily mo and the pitcher!

  61. metsfan119 says:

I’m fine with this move as long as Willie takes him out if a lefty comes in

  62. ccmetfan says:

Any yet seen Manny’s play today. He got a fly ball, high fived a fan, and then doubled up Huff at first base ,all in one play.

    • Koko says:

Hopefully not in that order. :D

      • Koko says:

Or was it in that order? If so Huff must not have been hustling back.

      • ccmetfan says:

I meant that he caught a fly ball near the wall, high fived a fan, and threw it in time to first base.

    • Nightlife says:

It was in that order, and it was awesome. The fact that he still managed to double the runner at first up was all the more hilarious.

I love Manny so much. I wish we could have gotten him a few years ago.

  63. metsfan119 says:

    ok, now no wild pitches

  64. metsfan119 says:

damnit Heilman, can’t you EVER come through

  65. Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

Well, if this team stays true to it’s form, then:

    This game is over.

  66. metsfan119 says:

and now Alou’s out of the game, GREAT!

  67. BlueTrane says:

    oh, Aaron…

  68. dykstraw says:

every time i get close to giving omar some credit we get burned by jesus flores.

    also: aaron, WTF?

  69. MainStMets says:

    time to go senior heilman

  70. metsfan42793 says:

RELEASE HEILMAN. HE SUCKS. MY GRANDMA CAN PITCH BETTER THEN HIM

  71. chew13 says:

I can’t take Heilman anymore. That’s not based on just this game. I simply can’t take him anymore. Please get him off this team, whether by trade, injury or assignment. I don’t care just get rid of him.

  72. metsfan119 says:

Willie is an abortion, I truly can’t even look at him anymore

  73. MainStMets says:

get the fn hook ready, hes done, i think we need to relegate him to mop up duty seems to be only thing he is good for, BURY HIM WILLIE

PUT HIM IN A BODY BAG!!!

  74. metsfan119 says:

    TAKE HIM OUT!

  75. MainStMets says:

yet hes pitching to back to back lefties, hmmm

  76. Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

I think it’s time Joe Smith gets the 7th inning.

  77. metsfan119 says:

f%CK you Mets, I hate this team

  78. MainStMets says:

    great shoot by r church

for the love of god please take heilman out of the game

  79. metsfan42793 says:

OMFG HEILMAN GET A F-ING BATTER UP. RELEASE HEILMAN.

  80. metsfan119 says:

FIRE WILLIE….PLEASE IS ANYONE UP THERE??? FIRE THIS PIECE OF SH%T MANAGER!!!!!!!

  81. MarcRabbi says:

Someone tell Keith that Dukes was running because there were 2 out and a full count

  82. dykstraw says:

if heilman has option, he needs to go down and be stretched out to start

he is DEAD as a reliever

  83. gipper91375 says:

Heilman is such a bum. It’s in his head now.

  84. metsfan119 says:

ok Heilman, give up the homer now

    • Zug says:

Ok. I have not made one, single anti-Willie comment all season long… but its completely F-ing ridiculous that Heilman continually getsthe call in close games. I think Willie takes too much flak at times and you do have to show your guys you trust them… but a guy can only blow so many games till its time to either send him down or stop putting him in close F-in games.

      Good night.

  85. Metdamage says:

Just cut ties with Heilman now. It’s that bad. He has to go away.

  86. SayItAintSo says:

    I BLAME RANDOLPH HERE!!!!

STOP BRINGING HEILMAN IN IN TIE GAMES…

WHY COULDNT VARGAS STAY IN… OR WHY COULDNT SMITH COME IN??????

STOP BRINGING THIS PIECE OF CRAP IN CLOSE GAMES..

HE IS JUST AWFUL RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  87. mets19 says:

I’d rather the mets have kept Sosa then rely on have Aaron Heilman lose these games for us. The mets PROCEDE to throw him out there when he cant get anyone out.
My hair is going to fall out of my head soon after watching the mets… thank goodness Giuseppe Franco wouldn’t put his name on the line for something that doesnt work.

  88. MainStMets says:

this isnt willie’s fault, this is all on heilman

maybe well go the route of other guys who imploded this week and DFA this chump

    • SayItAintSo says:

IT IS HIS FAULT FOR RUNNING HIM OUT THERE WITH ONE ON AND ONE OUT..

NO REASON TO TAKE OUT VARGAS

NO REASON TO NOT BRING IN SMITH IN THE 7TH

      RANDOLPH IS A COMPLETE MORON..

      THERES TWO MORE FOR YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • dc13 says:

No, this IS on Willie. No way should Heilman see the light of day in a close game. And once he walked 2 guys, he should have been yanked. Willie is so stubborn and was wrong to use Heilman in a tight spot.

      • MudvilleNine says:

I dont believe you guys. I know Willie has the last word, but Peterson is the one telling him he can use him. The guy is just putting his trust in a guy the Wilpons hired. Maybe somebody better tell Peterson to give up on Heilman.

  89. D-Day says:

heilman is the only consistent thing going on this team, he consistently gives up runs every time he pitches!

  90. Guys calm down….it’s not over yet…have some faith in your team. If they don’t come back and win, then complain!

  91. RockfordMetsFan says:

I have a lot of faith in this team, but not so much in Heilman. He can have 2 outs and be 0-2 on the third guy, and my stomach still churns. He just can’t seem to do anything right in my eyes.

  92. metsfan119 says:

I’m not even angry with Heilman, it’s Willie, once a lefty came in, he should’ve gone right to Schoe or Feliciano.

  93. Darryl Strawberry says:

This goes beyond Heilman. This is a 500 team at best. The only thing they are consistent at is being inconsistent. Errors, walks, untimely hitting, nonchalant play, over-taxed bullpen, lack of clutch hitting, getting dominated by mediocre pitching, poor managing and coaching, lack of fundamentals, lack of focus, revolving door pitching staff etc. etc. etc. This season was over before is started. No playoffs, third or fourth place.

  94. HOFMets57 says:

    *sigh*

I was REALLY hoping for a 5-2 homestand. Considering this team’s ineptitude at coming back late in games this looks like a 4-3 stretch AT BEST. Maybe even 3-4 if Pelfrey flops tomorrow.

    Horrible, just horrible…

    • gipper91375 says:

No worries, those Reds and Nats are first class baseball teams. What’s that? Really?

      Oh, nevermind.

      Tick-tock, Mr. Randolph. Tick-tock

  95. gipper91375 says:

    Boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

  96. ccmetfan says:

    Bring back Sosa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!just kidding

  97. metsfan42793 says:

i blame both willie and heiman. its willies fault because he know heilman is strugging and at this time heilman gave up a 2 run single. AND HEILMAN SUCKS

  98. MainStMets says:

he might be taken off the field by the crowd at this rate

  99. Hernandez_1B says:

Well at least we know who the new long man is. Heilman can only be trusted in blow out games. This is ridiculous.

  100. metsfan119 says:

So at best they split the series against this piece of sh*& team. Yeah, the Mets are going places….

  101. miker94 says:

hey imagine that, the mets bullpen blew yet ANOTHER game! unreal. i’d love to stay positive and hope that they can come back in the next 3 innings, but based on previous performances, it probably won’t happen.

  102. metsfan119 says:

Can we booo Heilman? Is that ok Mets fans?

  103. miker94 says:

    and thats the ball game

  104. metsfan42793 says:

    BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  105. D-Day says:

well your right its not over yet, i do have faith but willie has to open his eyes and realize that you just cant put heilman in when the game is tight, he always blows it. and trying to have him pitch out of his problems is only making him worse, put him in when were blowing a team out or at least we have a sizeable lead then forget him in the close games!

  106. SayItAintSo says:

RANDOLPH YOU ARE A FN MORON

I HOPE YOU CHOKE ON A CHICKEN BONE

    YOU ARE A COMPLETE MORON

WHY DO YOU GO TO HEILMAN?????????

TAKE A POLL ON METSBLOG NEXT TIME YOU TRY TO MAKE A PITCHING CHANGE

    YOU ARE A MOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOONNNNNNN

  107. WrightsRight says:

Who was happy with a 4-3 homestand vs. the worst teams in baseball?

    • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

4-3? Remember, Pelfrey is going tomorrow. A win is far from guaranteed.

    • HOFMets57 says:

4-3 IF we win tomorrow. With the way this team has played up till now, leaving Shea with that would be fortuitous.

    • gipper91375 says:

As I recall, Metsblog readers, in a rare case of near unanimity, voted in a Metsblog poll that 5-2 was the minumum acceptable result in this 7 game homestand against the dregs of the NL.

  108. ChiliGTC says:

Is Heilman the 2008 version of G Mota or what?

  109. Nightlife says:

    Man Heilman is bad.

  110. The Glider says:

No hitting. Heilman’s had his problems and may need a change (starting? another team? or both). But this team had problems scoring runs – as has been pointed out by this site and others.

Either Beltran, Delgado, Wright, Reyes and Alou need to turn on the engines (hopefully sooner than later) or Omar has to get to work.

    • Nightlife says:

I was going to mention this too. We had a guy making a spot start against the Nats, the offense should know that 99% of the time in this kind of game that is going to take more than 1 run to win.

  111. Woodside20 says:

Now would be an opportune time for Heilman to punch a watercooler or wall with his pitching hand as hard as he possibly can and save Mets fans from him for the rest of the year.

  112. I_Need_More_Cowbell_Please says:

    im sick to my stomach

  113. Darryl Strawberry says:

Don’t forget this is a last place team we are facing and before everyone starts celebrating Claudio Vargas, just remember the lineup he pitched to was right handed dominated and not all that impressive. He will get lit up by teams like the Phillies and Braves.

  114. cyclone says:

5-1. Down by more than 3, late innings, looks like it’s time for the Mets to lay down and go to sleep. I’ve seen this movie before, time to change the channel…

  115. Metdamage says:

Heilman comes in and promptly gives up 4 runs. Willie is at fault here because Heilman is struggling while Joe Smith is pitching very well. Going with Heilman was a terrible choice.

    • MudvilleNine says:

True, lets bury Smith with an over abundance of work. How about asking Peterson why he keeps recommending Heilman to Willie.

      • Don Logan says:

So you know for a fact that every pitching change stems from a Peterson recommendation? Nice job assuming that’s how it works. The manager makes the final call on all decisions, thus the criticism of Willie. Deal with it.

  116. metsfan119 says:

and this is why, when you’re batting in the ninth inning of a Game 7, you swing the fuc^&ing bat, because you never know when you’ll get there again

  117. gipper91375 says:

Disgusting. Seven home games against the fricking Reds and Nats and they’ll be fortunate at this point to come away 4-3.

  118. all the booing of your own players has to stop!!!!

  119. goheels42 says:

I can’t take this anymore, when will Willie get it in his freakin’ head, Heilman has no business pitching the 7th or later, he sucks, send him to New Orleans.

  120. dr jones says:

That dude is cursed!!! He should go back to the way he threw a few years ago. If you don’t remember they changed his arm angle windup. Maybe he can work on that in the minors.

  121. Ryan Synagogue says:

Tell me right now that Mets fans are wrong for booing Aaron Heilman. Screw that piece of [Chipper]. He just Mota’d us right out of this game.

And look at that, Joe Smith comes in, 3 pitches. inning over.

I hope Claudio Vargas kicks Aaron Heilman’s @$$

  122. oklametsfan says:

Joe Smith to Heilman: I hope you were taking notes.

  123. D-Day says:

this is just sad, and vargas pitched a good game too. way to go heilman!

  124. The Glider says:

Heilman’s been pretty damn effective the last couple years. Now, he looks like he’s lost movement off his fast ball and his change-up looks sucky. Doesn’t Rick Peterson, who got credit when Heilman was going good, get any of the blame?

  125. metsfan119 says:

Unfortunately for Willie there are no do-overs. Great managing bonehead

  126. Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

Smith comes in and strikes out Zimmerman on 3 pitches. Why wasn’t he brought in instead of Heilman. It should be Smith-Sanchez-Wagner. End of story.

    • D-Day says:

seriously, everyone seems to get it except for the one person calling the shots, COMMON WILLIE OPEN YOUR FING EYES!

  127. johnolerud says:

If the Mets lose tonight and tmrw…wowww… as a poster stated above… tick tock willow… tick tock…

  128. WrightsRight says:

    2005

  129. goheels42 says:

When was Heilman ever “really” good? In meaningless games with nothing on the line? The only meaningful spot I remember him in was Yadier sending him deep.

    • jose--jose-jose-jose says:

He was very good last year… and no, not just in meaningless games if you were watching.

However, he has absolutely totally 100% sucked this year.

      • goheels42 says:

Give me a meaningful spot? He’s been terrible for 88% of his Mets career.

  130. you dont boo your own f in players !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! plain and simple

    • gipper91375 says:

      Grow up, man.

1.) Been a Mets fan long? Were the “Sisk Sucks” days before your time?

2.) The Mets have a better home than roadrecord, so much for the booing hurting the team theory.

3.) Did you simply ignore Matt’s great interview with Darryl about “boogate”? When Darryl laughed off the “controversy,” said it had always been like that at Shea, and that Mets fans are the greatest because they are passionate. Thathe missed the passionate fanbase when he was in LA?

    • SayItAintSo says:

      you are a moron

    • Metdamage says:

SHUT YOUR STINKING FINGERS!!!!! WHEN HEILMAN AND WILLIE TAG TEAM TO DESTROY A GAME YOU BOO. PLAIN AND SIMPLE AND IF YOU CAN”T TAKE IT THEN YOU CLAP FOR HEILMAN.

  131. pkpiazza31 says:

does anyone kno how long heilman is signed for, is this his last year?

    • metsfan119 says:

too long, but right now all I care about is getting rid of the downs syndrome adult who is managing this team

      • jose--jose-jose-jose says:

…nice, make fun of a disease.

        • gipper91375 says:

Seriously, that is so wrong. Downs Syndrome is a serious affliction.

And, it’s highly insulting and demeaning to those who suffer with it and their loved ones.

After all, Willie is much dumber than anyone with Downs.

  132. cyclone says:

It’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon…but do I have to watch the same race over and over and over….

  133. WrightsRight says:

    God Hates the Mets

  134. dont boo your players.com

  135. goheels42 says:

Luckily Sosa was DFA’d, otherwise Willie would be trotting him out in 2 outs.

  136. SenorMet says:

    HEILMAN MUST GO!!!

FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY……..

    HEILMAN MUST GO!!

  137. I’m putting down the koolaid. Fire Willie. Free Wally Backman!

  138. metsfan42793 says:

    FIRE ISIAH!!!!!!!!!

  139. you wanna bitch how about the weak offence tonight

    • gipper91375 says:

Offense is horrible tonight. “Boooooo, offense!”

PS: Nice spelling, punctuation and capitalization.

    • WrightsRight says:

Offense was horrible but that doesn’t excuse Heilman. And I usually give Willie the benefit of the doubt but he can’t pull a Pat Riley/Jon Starks here and assume Heilman will pitch his way out of it. In a close game, he should be home not on the mound.

  140. dr jones says:

With the way Heilman has been throwing there is no friggin reason that he should of had 2…….2…………..2………….. guys up in that pen. What on gods earth was he thinking? So even if Heilman had nothing he would of had a guy warmed up and ready.. That is a terrible managerial decision..

    • dr jones says:

      Meant to say

With the way Heilman has been throwing there is no friggin reason that he shouldn’t of had 2…….2…………..2………….. guys up in that pen. What on gods earth was he thinking? So even if Heilman had nothing he would of had a guy warmed up and ready.. That is a terrible managerial decision..

  141. backinbusiness says:

Some baseball purist needs to explain to me the fairness in Vargas getting the loss here (likely) and not Heilman.

    Just gross.

    • nova86 says:

the leading run was his base runner. i assume you knew that, but just in case.

      • gipper91375 says:

Yup, but Backinbusiness has a point. Just further evidence of how meaningless the the W-L stat can be for pitchers.

      • backinbusiness says:

Yeah, I get it, but it just makes no sense. “Wins” and “losses” are such stupid stats.

  142. WrightsRight says:

Heilman is horrible…but Redding is no Koufax and the Mets made him look like that tonight.

  143. freshprince07 says:

Is it me or does it seem like Willie gives up on this team?

With Heilman falling apart out there, with runners on second and third with the score 3-1, still a close game, he just leave heilman out there to give up 2 runs. Why is he afraid to put Smith in? He almost seems like he just doesn’t care…

And he really needs to learn to stop giving second chances. Once heilman can prove hes more consistent, by pitching in blowouts, then…maybe…just maybe…we can trust him again. But what does willie think, heilman will magically pitch better today?

He really does need to be fired. He’s an embarrassment

    • SayItAintSo says:

i love that willie got the crap booed out of him walking back to the dugout..

he has joe torre scott proctor syndrome

HE LEAVES PITCHERS OUT THERE TO DIE…. IT ONLY HURTS US!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • cafuq says:

i wish it were second chances… what has it been, 7 or 8 for heilman this year alone

    • HOFMets57 says:

Willie is notoriously stubborn. It’s the same old story…

Willie’s frame of mind: “I really need Aaron to get going. Our bullpen is overworked as it is. We need the Aaron-Duaner-Billy trio of 2006. It’s only May, better Aaron work out his kinks now rather than later…”

What Willie does NOT realize is games count just as much in May as they do in September. You’re right, he tossed the game for the sake of getting Aaron ‘going.’ Willie’s digging his own grave as far as I’m concerned.

    • Slappy McSingleton says:

Yeah, it is ridiculous that he was left in. Ok, whatever, he gives up a run see if he can get out of it. But after the second run he should have been pulled no question, I think Willie should be fired on that reason alone. (among others, obviously)

  144. SayItAintSo says:

HE AND PEDERSON HAVE THE COMBINED BRAIN POWER OF MY LEFT NUT

    SEND WILLIE TO THE MINORS!!!!!

  145. metsfan119 says:

I just hope in all the papers tomorrow the writers put the blame on Willie and not Heilman

    • nova86 says:

willie shouldnt have left him out there, but the blame should go to the guy serving them up.

  146. edwin nieves says:

Ditto “Chan-Ho Paking Lot” Willie gets the blame on this one!

  147. AlreadyMissShea says:

Heilman makes me reach for the aspirin, and Willie left him out there too long, but unless I missed it, nobody has addressed this:

You’re not going to win too many games when you only score two runs. The Mets are still threatening and hopefully will score some more runs, but if they don’t, it’s a team loss.

    • gipper91375 says:

No doubt. But at some point, the blame has to fall on the manager, whose job it is to get his guys playing up to their potential and to play well on homestands like these, when they ought to be feasting on the second division teams like the lowly Nats and Reds. The guy’s whole reputation is that his motivational skills overcome his poor in-game tactical decsions. Not so sure that reputation is being earned.

      • AlreadyMissShea says:

Hey, as far as I’m concerned Willie can go manage a Duane Reade store, and Heilman can go with him to stock shelves. I’m just pointing out that this team is very inconsistent. Seems like they either score 12 runs or 2 runs. I know it’s not that drastic of a difference, but it feels that way.

And yeah, sometimes I think the only guy Willie motivates is Willie. I don’t know if anyone else is even listening. I’m not there, so it’s just my opinion. But I listened to his spot with Ed Coleman during the pre-game, and Coleman brought up Church’s success.

How did Willie respond to Coleman’s bringing up Church being hotter than hell? By talking about himself for the next three minutes. He knows this, he knows that. The only thing I missed was the part where he actually agreed with the freaking point that Church is on fire. But that’s only because he never addressed it. Willie was too busy talking about Willie.

And I’ve laid off of the guy for a little while now. So I guess my point is, when I said it’s a team loss, it’s not meant to let him off the hook.

        • gipper91375 says:

Well said. And, you are quite right that there is plenty of blame to go around.

Hey, it could be that this group just isn’t as talented as we think, or that they lack the requisite mental make-up (or both). Only way to find that out is to dunp “Brains” Randolph and see what happens in the post-”Brains” Randolph era. If they continue to be mediocre at best, then it’s time to re-evaluate Omar and start over.

    • backinbusiness says:

      AMS is exactly right.

Come on Mets, 3 runs off these scrub relievers, is that impossible?

  148. dr jones says:

WHY WASN’T ANOTHER GUY WARMING UP IN THAT PEN!!!!! WHY WILLIE WHY.. WHAT ARE YOU THINKING

  149. goheels42 says:

Art Howe would of figured this out by now……………….

  150. helicopter ben johnson says:

even thinking as objectively as possible, there is no way HEILMAN can remain with the mets after this latest display. and yes it is fair to repeat the fact the he gave up the season in 2006.

  151. dr jones says:

I can’t believe he didn’t have someone warmed up and ready in case Heilman couldn’t get the job done. I really just don’t get this guy. He falls asleep as a manager.

  152. metsfan119 says:

3-3 on this homestand against the f’ing Reds and Nats. And yet, I’m not in the least bit surprised.

  153. MudvilleNine says:

What I find funny is that there was hardly any posts while the game was tied and things were going well. Then all of a sudden something bad happens and everybody comes out of the woodwork.

    • dykstraw says:

because i am so angry at this latest display of pitching ineptitude and managerial incompentency that it’s either this or i literally start destroying my apartment

    • gipper91375 says:

I was wondering where everybody was…semmed like it was only myself and like 5 other guys commenting and then, bam!

Still….is human nature. People want to vent.

      • MudvilleNine says:

As good an explanation as anything else and of course the more likely one.

    • AlreadyMissShea says:

Well I won’t speak for anyone else, but I couldn’t stop working to post on here during a game where there wasn’t a whole hell of a lot going on. I love pitchers duels, which was what we basically had, but there’s wasn’t much for me to say about it. I’ll say Vargas did a nice job tonight, but that’s all I would have said an hour ago too.

  154. Slappy McSingleton says:

HEY MATT WHERES THE “WAS WILLIE RANDOLPH RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS LOSS” POLL? I BET IT WON’T BE 50/50 THIS TIME, CHAMP.

  155. Metdamage says:

Wille will not have an answer for why Joe Smith was not the first choice out of the pen in a close game. Heilman has shown that he can’t handle that spot. Why bring him in?

  156. backinbusiness says:

Can you imagine if Smith had sent down and not Sosa, per the original plan? It would be 8-2 at least.

  157. D-Day says:

once again joe smith shows how its done!

  158. Runshouse says:

Everything is great, this team is fine, no reason to be concerned… I have no idea why people are so upset with this team it’s not like they are losing to a last place team… The more SNY content on this site the more we will apologize for this 100 million dollar plus bag of balls.

  159. WrightsRight says:

Hate to say it but the Mets should look to the Phillies for inspiration. They were down 8-0, it’s now 8-5. Utley, Werth, Rollins, Dobbs = grit and never say die…

  160. Ryan Synagogue says:

Thank you Joe Smith. SOMEONE knows how to keep his team in the game. Take notes, Aaron. Take notes.

  161. metsfan119 says:

I guess we won’t see any Willie Confidence Polls any time soon. Gotta win 2 or 3 games in a row first.

  162. SayItAintSo says:

    because hes his guy

smith will be sent down tomorrow for getting too many outs

  163. D-Day says:

i really think this all falls on willie and not rick peterson, we dont see what goes on behind the scenes. i bet peterson is saying the same crap we are but because willie is so fing stubborn (which he is know for being) he wont listen and we keep losing!

  164. howellmetsfan says:

Wille will not have an answer for why Joe Smith was not the first choice out of the pen in a close game. Heilman has shown that he can’t handle that spot. Why bring him in?

hes going to say he wanted aaron to get him through the 7th and use smith in the 8th trying to get Duaner some rest since he hasnt been as sharp as of late

  165. HOFMets57 says:

    You know what I’m realizing?

    Willie is sentimentally nostalgic.

He needs to realize Heilman and Duaner are no longer the automatic shut-down guys of the past. Get over it, Willie. Your stubbornness will cost you your job…

  166. ccmetfan says:

The Braves-Phillie game on espn is more interesting,8-5

  167. MainStMets says:

ok here we go, nice job marlon

  168. howellmetsfan says:

Jose Reyes at this point is an automatic out….where is roger cedeno?? Rey Ordonez?

  169. D-Day says:

    common church!!!!

  170. backinbusiness says:

That glimpse at the Met “braintrust” was interesting. “Damn, can we really cut a 3rd pitcher in two days?”

    Yeah Marlon! COME ON LGM.

  171. AlouIsNasty says:

Put yourself in his shoes. You go out there and get lit up with men on repeatedly. Yet they do not demote you, they put you out there again and again. You try to regain your confidence but once that first mistake slips you start getting the shakes. The boos start after the first walk and it’s all downhill from there. Yet game after game, you are sent to the mound. The man is not made of stone, he’s a baseball player for Christ’s sake, the streakiest kind of athlete there is. THIS IS ON WILLIE.

  172. Wondy says:

This bullpen is worse than ours…let’s try to salvage this debacle here…

  173. dr jones says:

did you guys see that stat on sny it said heilman was 2 for 8 not allowing inherited runners to score. Why would you show blind trust to a guy that having such a problem in situations like that. Why bring him in, in that spot. He should of had smith warming up with him at the very least…

  174. Heilman_must_GO says:

Willie should’ve takened Heilman out much sooner, seeing too much of Heilman self destruct out there.

    it’s deja vu

    1. getting behind the hitters
    2. walking hitters
    3. giving up hits with RISP

  175. edwin nieves says:

I can’t remember the last time the Mets came back and won a game?

  176. metsfan119 says:

    get on base Church

  177. SayItAintSo says:

heilman is in mota terrritory now

  178. metsfan119 says:

    now tie this f’er up!

  179. Koko says:

Funny. . . For most the game very few comments. Mets start sucking and all of a sudden an explosion.

Once again Willie can only use the guys he has. He used Wise and Sanchez yesterday, so you’d like to give them a rest or wait till they are really needed in a tie game (extra innings). . . It failed, but it was the right call.

In hindsight we’d all love to have had Smith in their in the 7th, but he should have been saved for the 8th. . . .

I know we can’t DFA heilman because he’d be picked up in a second and probably start for a team too.

    • dr jones says:

      NO DUDE

    • dykstraw says:

do you really think smith was being saved for the 8th? smith is now our 8th inning guy after he was almost sent down? yeah that sounds like trademark willie openmindedness.

heilman needs to be sent down if he has an option.

      • Metdamage says:

        Two things kill this theory.

        1. Smith hasn’t pitched in a while so he could pitch two innings, like he did tonight anyway.

        2. If Sanchez couldn’t pitch then why was he warming up in the 7th and is still warming up bottom 8th?

        • Koko says:

          2. Answer: Everyone is usually able to pitch, it is you’d not like to have to have them pitch.

He was warming up in case the flood gates continued.

          1. Answer: now pitching two innings, as everyone is clamoring for, pretty much knocks Smith out for tomorrow’s contest.

Ideally, everyone would just go one inning, but it didn’t work out that way today.

        • Metdamage says:

So Willie was managing for tomorrows game when your in a one run game tonight that you should win. Dude you are not going to win no matter how you spin it. Heilman in a one run game is not smart. Period.

      • dykstraw says:

sanchez is warming up. again. there goes that willie defense.

  180. WrightsRight says:

    Let’s go Wright….

  181. jimyager says:

WOW!! What a game, We played well and hung in there with an inferior last place team until the end. We put up a good fight and lost to a better team. GOOD GAME GUYS. We will take them Thursday. A poll taken here said that if the Mets went less than 5-2 on this homestand it was a bust …well…ITS A BUST !!!! The best we can hope for at this point is 4-3 and the way we are playing it may be 3-4. We do NOT play like champions or winners we play like a middle of the pack 500 team. FIRE WILLIE and make some changes NOW before it gets to late.

    • therealsince86 says:

Why do you make these type of comments before we lose?

    • MudvilleNine says:

See Gipper, this is what me and Koko have said. You didnt see Mr. Yager above or Mr. SayIt AintSo until the game went downhill because all they like to do is complain about Willie or something else that was wrong. Never on here to say anything about what might have gone right in the game. Maybe they can only type when they have to vent I guess.

      • gipper91375 says:

I don’t disagree that there are some who only come out to spew negativity. I am as down on this club and especially on it smanager as anyone, but I am always here and willing to laud them when they do well.

        So,

1.) Don’t lump all anti-Willie types into one camp.

2.) Some, like AMS, have a good point. Not much to say during a pitchers’ duel like we had for most of tonight.

        and

    S–T!!!!

  203. AlreadyMissShea says:

By the way, since I wasn’t here earlier I’ll say it now. WTF was Alou thinking?

    • SayItAintSo says:

      HE WAS TIRED

    • AlreadyMissShea says:

I’ll expand on that. I know he was upset, but the fact is whenever he’s not around the catchphrase of the day is always “When Alou comes back…”

And I agree with the catchphrase, because when he’s around he flat out rakes. But the thing is, when he’s around, healthy, and in the line-up we really can’t afford to have him come out of a game like that.

When he can play he’s just too valuable.

    • jose--jose-jose-jose says:

I thought we all loved guys showing “fire” and getting tossed from games.

Oh, wait, have you guys finally realized now that that line of thinking is stupid and it hurts the team much more than it helps us? Ok, good…. finally.

      • AlreadyMissShea says:

        Who are you talking to?
I never said that about any player… ever.

        • jose--jose-jose-jose says:

Sorry, not you in perticular, but there are always comments on this blog about Willie and the players not showing enough fire, and not getting ejected enough and some stupid stuff like that.

        • AlreadyMissShea says:

OK, because I said earlier that if they lost this game it was a team loss. Alou will get a pass, but what he did hurt tonight as much as anything else. Really could have used his bat later in the game.

  204. almar1965 says:

For all the talk (and rightly so) of heilman and willie garnering the blame if they lose, a case can be made for alou for getting tossed for reacting in a bush league way.

    • D-Day says:

at least he showed some life, you have to admit this team has been pretty flat!

    • dykstraw says:

alou got mad and slammed his bat down. bad move, but it was uncharacteristic. i can let that go.

willie did what he always does – goes to heilman in a close game with runners on – and heilman did he always does – completely suck. that’s not excusable.

  205. SayItAintSo says:

  212. D-Day says:

and here i thought beating up on the reds and nats would give us some nice momentum going into the yanks series, so much for that. mediocre has defined this team so far!

  213. HeadlinerG60 says:

Three things on this team are consistent:

    1) Willie’s inability to manage
    2) Heilman’s inability to not allow runs
    3) This team’s inconsistency

  214. SayItAintSo says:

    6-3 no outs

  215. Mex_17 says:

The only reason Randolph is still employed is the Mets are too cheap to eat his contract and admit their terrible blunder in hiring him.

Minaya has zero confidence in Randolph, the players have zero confidence in him, and the fans have zero confidence in him. He’s dead man walking. Or maybe dumb man walking.

Even the Willie apologists on this blog can’t possibly believe that any other MLB team would hire Randolph as a manager when the Mets finally fire him. So if no other MLB team would hire him, why is he still our manager???

And yes, for the love of god, get RID of Aaron Schiraldi Heilman. I’d rather have Sosa, literally, no joking. I never want to see that piece of crap in a Mets uniform again. I don’t care if he goes to Atlanta, becomes a starter, and wins 30 games a year until he’s inducted in the Hall of Fame, I want him GONE NOW.

    • dr jones says:

he will find another job.. he’ll be a bench coach in LA next season.. maybe one day he’ll even make it back to coaching third base. A man with a dream..

  216. NY Cuban says:

Can someone explain to me how the confidence rating went up today?

    • gipper91375 says:

      A win last night.

      • NY Cuban says:

So we only get confidence ratings after wins…I love it. And Willie polls after 3 game winning streaks…sounds scientific.

        • gipper91375 says:

          NYCuban,

I agree with you on canning Willie, but you have to drop the crazy “the CIA killed Kennedy” conspiracy theories about the polls. The Confidence Rating is run every Wednesday. Period.

      • dr jones says:

You really can’t trust Willie anymore to make the correct moves. I would not want him coaching this team in a big time game

  217. playmaker3128 says:

Just to comment on a thing or two quick. First off aaron heilman, he obviously has talent. However the most frustrating thing is he looks scared out there. He nibbles way to much. Like for example, the harris AB. No excuse to freaking walk that guy right there. He’s most likely not gonna beat you with the long ball anyway, throw strikes.

Also i’m not one to fire any managers or anything. However if we end up losing this one, and then lose to the nats tommarow. Does anyone think theres a slight chance willie gets fired? I’m not blaming this season entirely on him, but tonight right now this loss is on him. I know some will blame the offense, but your not gonna score runs every game. Thats baseball. Redding has been pitching well. Leaving heilman in in that 7th inning was inexcusable and may have cost us the game.

    • InsaneMetsFan says:

      Agreed

    • AlreadyMissShea says:

“However if we end up losing this one, and then lose to the nats tommarow. Does anyone think theres a slight chance willie gets fired?”

      Definitely not.

  218. therealsince86 says:

Got here late, what did Willie do wrong this game?

  219. gipper91375 says:

This movie is getting very old.

  220. D-Day says:

win lose win lose win lose, is this how it will be all year, COMMON pull this out in the ninth inning and shut me up!

  221. cohen1333 says:

Watching Aaron Heilman pitch is like going on a roller coaster. You sometimes go up, you sometimes go down, but no matter which way you go, you have to puke your guts out in the trash can on the concourse.

  222. InsaneMetsFan says:

Typical Willie Randolph…he took out Vargas too soon and left Heilman in too long.

    It’s a Willie Randolph special.

    • D-Day says:

the man has no clue when it comes to managing a pitching staff, thats probably why this team isnt hitting, the pitching (bullpen) has taken the life out of us!!!!! why hit when we know the lead is gonna be lost anyway!

    • Wondy says:

Yep, you allow a runner after your 100th pitch, and your name’s not Johan, you’re yanked.

      • Koko says:

That is Peterson’s fault more then Willie. Peterson has this nebulous 100 pitch count. . . If you want to blame someone, blame him. I do think pitchers should go more then 100, but not the Guru Jacket.

I do give a little nod that Vargas might not have his stamina as he hasn’t pitched much so far this year. He might have been tiring as well.

  223. playmaker3128 says:

So 9th inning we have delgado, schneider, easily. If anyone gets on in all likelyhood i would imagine tatis would grab a bat.

  224. ccmetfan says:

    marlins tie it up

  225. InsaneMetsFan says:

Our hopes hinge on Fernando Tatis??? I’m going to bed.

  226. D-Day says:

ok, im putting my last ounce of faith into this inning, LETS GO METS!!!!!

  227. SayItAintSo says:

marlins score 6!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! to tie it up

  228. playmaker3128 says:

wow and to make things worse. Florida ties it up. cmon delgado. take one.

  229. NY Cuban says:

Willie for manager of the year…where do i vote?

  230. Koko says:

So everyone understands. Since baseball is a marathon, you need think about today’s game, tomorrow’s game, and the game in three days at the same time.

Everyone is clamoring that Smith pitched two innings anyway, why not have him pitch two starting in the 7th?

You know why? Because now that he did pitch two (and if he had at the beginning) he would probably be not available for tomorrow’s game unless it was an emergency.

Sanchez was warming up in case the flood gates were being opened up even more. Ideally he would not have been used at all, but at times you just have to over use your bullpen.

Bringing in Heilman was the right move in the 7th. You hope that he gets out of it fine. He didn’t. But if he had – and the percentages said he actually would – then he goes one inning. Smith one, and then Wagner one. . .

And then all are available in some capacity tomorrow. You use Smith for two, the capacity Smith is available tomorrow is low. Willie or Peterson can’t forsee what Heilman is going to do unless against a poor hitting Nats team. Heilman struggled from the beginning when the fans booed him before he even threw a pitch. But unless Omar gives Willie another option, that is what it is going to happen.

  231. EliPorter says:

i want to see that poll that said what mets fans wanted from this home stand

    • gipper91375 says:

It was a landslide for 5-2 as a minimum acceptable result,

      So much for that!

      • NY Cuban says:

I guess that means it a landslide that 4-3 is unacceptable…but the sunshiners will talk about how its still over .500 and early and we didnt have our best pitchers going, etc.

        • therealsince86 says:

I guess I am who you speak of. I too think its unacceptable. I just choose not to whine about it.

  238. NY Cuban says:

Did you all see those numbers? Tell me Heilman is stellar on the road and horrible at home because of the boos? HE IS AWFUL EVERYWHERE!!!

  239. m00kie says:

you know it’s bad when even my wife knew heilman should not be coming in to that spot.

  240. Mex_17 says:

This makes a lot more sense when you remember that the Mets owner’s favorite team is still the Dodgers.

Willie’s favorite team is the Dodgers too, because Torre is going to be the only person who returns Willie’s call for a bench job in 2009.

  241. SayItAintSo says:

    HEY WILLIE!!!!!

    WHY DID YOU PULL VARGAS??????
AND WHY DID YOU BRING IN HEIMLICH WITH A MAN ON?????

    YOU ARE DISGUSTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  242. ccmetfan says:

Heilman blew the game but at least the offense didn’t go down too quietly. They managed to score at least 2 more runs.

  243. D-Day says:

i thouht that anything less then 6-1 on this home stand would be a failure but THIS, well be lucky if we win one tommorrow and pull out to 4-3

  244. dykstraw says:

maz just called willie out on not going out to get heilman after the walk to harris

but he isn’t a former big league manager, right willie fan club?

    • Ryan Synagogue says:

Nobody, NOBODY can defend willie randolph after this one. you have a VERY capable bullpen outside of Heilman. They should have been warming up from the beginning of his outing.

This L should be removed from Vargas and put on Randolph’s stats, cuz he managed us OUT of this game.

This evaluation cant come soon enough

  245. Ryan Synagogue says:

Thanks a lot Willie. Everyone in that stadium but you knew Heilman was going to blow that game (thats what the boos mean, by the way). Please fire this idiot.

Now we all know hes going to run the B-Squad out there tomorrow.

    Im thinking something like:

    Reyes
    Tatis
    Wright
    Beltran
    Easley
    Castro
    Chavez
    Anderson
    Pelfrey

So we take 1 out of 4 from a JOKE team.

  246. EliPorter says:

whether willie is a good or bad manager is irrelevant; the mets need a shakeup. whether it means firing willie, peterson, or signing sam cassell to play 2nd place, something needs to change.

    • therealsince86 says:

      I agree

    • InsaneMetsFan says:

I agree, enough is enough. This is supposed to be the best team in the National league and they can’t even beat the Nats at home.

I don’t know if Willie should be fired or not, all I know is something has got to change.

      • Don Logan says:

He should’ve been fired after last season’s collapse. I don’t believe the collapse was his fault but he represents the leadership of a gigantic collapse and you couldn’t have that same leader going into this season. Needed to start a clean slate this year w/ a new manager but the team didn’t want to eat his contract. (The extension he never should’ve gotten but only got b/c the team actually seemed pressured into it by local sports columnists.)

The team could deal w/ Willie’s poor tactical moves for a couple seasons but its gone on too long now and the learning curve is over. He’s shown he’s not improving as a tactical manager. He’ll forever be this bad. A lot of people refer to him as stubborn on here. Maybe that really is the case.

        • therealsince86 says:

But he WAS not. Thats past. Only prob. is now it will take us losing for him to be gone and I would rather win.

        • InsaneMetsFan says:

True, we’re in a catch 22. The only way to get rid of Willie is to lose, but I don’t want this team to lose and if they do win and keep Wille then everyone on this Blog knows Willie will blow a crucial game in the playoffs or World Series. Catch 22.

        • Don Logan says:

No, by keeping Willie they wanted to lose for 2 seasons instead of 1.

        • therealsince86 says:

Right I am sure they all WANT to lose, just like you get off when we do.

        • Don Logan says:

Why don’t you watch a game instead of coming on here to try to agitate the people who vent and actually watched it. I’m guessing you failed your SATs in reading comp b/c you never seem to grasp any of what I say anyway. And dude, I could write the greatest post every, and you’d make some stupid comment under it. You actually look for my name just to post something in response to it. Get a life, troll.
Like I said, watch a game sometime.

    • Koko says:

      I agree there. . .

I’m defending Willie because I don’t think this is his fault nearly much as the players. But I do think a shakeup is needed just to gain the attention of the players. It usually only is a short period where a shakeup helps, but it helps and maybe all the under performing players will realize they are better then their numbers say they are.

Last year it was Rick Down. Short success, but it hasn’t worked long term. But a lot of fans wanted it.

  247. InsaneMetsFan says:

This team has lost 2 out of 3 (so far) to the Washington Nationals…AT HOME…WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    So disgusting.

  248. backinbusiness says:

Vargas gets the loss. 6.1 IP, 3H, 1ER. That is just fundamentally unfair.

    Welcome to the Mets, guy.

  249. playmaker3128 says:

Didn’t heilman want to be a starter at some point? trade him to a team that wants him to be a starter for some relief help.

So far were 3-3 on this homestand vs two of the worst teams in the national league. even if we win tommarow i think we could have done much better than 4-3, now if we lose, thats pretty terrible.

Thing is after this homestand we go to yankee stadium, then four against the braves. How are we going to get anything going against any of the better teams if were playing this way.

    • InsaneMetsFan says:

5-2 was the goal, they failed to reach that goal. Let’s just pray they salvage 4-3.

  250. Metdamage says:

Lee Mazilli in the post game:” you cannot bring in Heilman in close games right now.”

  251. johnfromflushing says:

WHY DID YOU LEAVE HIM IN AFTER HE GAVE UP THE LEAD?
      WALKED HARRIS?
      GAVE UP A DOUBLE?”

      YOU SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  252. D-Day says:

im looking at the game on mlb gameday, can someone give me the highlights of willies postgame pressconference

    • InsaneMetsFan says:

It hasn’t happened yet, but let me give it a crack….

Willie: “We’ll go out there tomorrow and get them.”

“Heilman is my horse in the pen, I’m trying to get him going.”

“I know I suck, but they’re keepin me so I’ll keep on showing up.”

  253. Ryan Synagogue says:

oh goody, a post game interview with Willie. Hey i got a question for you: “WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU?”

  254. playmaker3128 says:

By the way to the people that have said fire willie or peterson, if it happened i guess i really couldn’t argue. However we can’t fire omar, and i know he wont be one of the first to go if this kind of play continues. Every move he’s made isn’t perfect. But the guy has changed the fabric of this franchise. What he did to get santana this offseason was perfectly played.

    • Ryan Synagogue says:

plus Church and Schneider. I got no problem with Omar. People complain about Bannister and Bell, but they sucked here. and i wish we had Burgos here now instead of Heilman. we need another flamethrower in the bullpen

      • SayItAintSo says:

bann pitched good here… he got hurt running out a triple and never pitched here again

  255. NY Cuban says:

He claims no one else was available…Schoe- under the weather, Wise – 3 days in a row. He wanted 2 innings out of Heilman.

  256. dr jones says:

You can’t trust Willie anymore to make the correct moves. I would not want him coaching this team in a big time game

  257. SayItAintSo says:

VARGAS PITCHED REALLY WELL IN A PITCHING DUEL(TIM REDDING, LOL)
WILLIE SAYS THIS WONT SET HEILMAN BACK, HES UN A LITTLE RUN, AND NEEDS TO FIGHT HIS WAY THROGH IT, HIS STUFF IS THERE, HE HAS TO THROW PITCHES(?????)

    I CANT LISTEN ANYMORE…

he had 0-2 on flores and he threw 3 junk pitches and then gave up the lead……….

WILLIE, I WISH YOU PHYSICAL HARM!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • InsaneMetsFan says:

I’ll settle for Willie to be unemployed in the morning, if physical harm comes, then so be it.

    • Ryan Synagogue says:

Translation: you bet im throwin him out there tomorrow, no matter the score.

    • johnfromflushing says:

you forgot to add the annoying post nasal drip snuffing noise after every sentence…..

    • freshprince07 says:

Willie always says that kind of garbage. “Oh, hes just in a little funk, Oh don’t worry he’ll be fine”

What happened when he said that about mota and delgado and the team in general last year?? “Oh, we’ll bounce back, we always do, we’ll make the playoffs” Yeah, that really went well.

Really, heilman should be sent down for awhile. Hes clearly not getting any better up here in the majors and the pressuring is getting to him. And it’s not like we don’t have anyone who can replace him. I remember Carlos Muniz in spring training pitching pretty well, i mean come on, there have got to be bullpen options in the minors that are better than heilman right now.

  258. SayItAintSo says:

WE NEED A JOBA RULE HERE

heilman can not pitch in a 4 run gamem winning or losing

    omar, PLEASE!!!!!

tell willie he cant pitch heilman at shea EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  259. Ryan Synagogue says:

Hey Gary Cohen reads these comments. Gary, PLEASE tell willie that putting pitchers in high pressure situations is not the way to break their slump.

    M-O-T-A

he cost us the division last year, and you’re doing it again Randolph. and if you manage us out of the playoffs again, then this team can take their fancy new field and shove it, i will not support an 09 mets team with that retard at the helm

  260. SayItAintSo says:

    com on reds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  261. freshprince07 says:

Ha, i wonder what the confidence meter in Willie will read in a few days…is it possible to have a negative percentage lol

    • Mex_17 says:

I think the confidence will still be over 50%.

Let’s face it, anyone who still had confidence in Willie after “The Collapse” will always have confidence in him no matter how much he drives this team into the ground.

      • gipper91375 says:

I think these positive Willie polls are driven by Skankee, Philthy and Braves fans. I mean, did you hear Shea booing Willie today?

  262. Metdamage says:

In his press conference Willie said he went to Heilman and kept him in the game because he was short on relievers.
Vargas went 7 1/3, that means you have 4 relievers for eight outs. You have Smith, Heilman, Feliciano and Wagner.

My question is this, with one out and a runner on, why go to Heilman FIRST? Bring in the most consistent arm, Smith, then deal with the eighth inning with Heilman starting fresh with no one on base.

Willie made the right move to take out Vargas but he chose the wrong reliever.

  263. Don Logan says:

I don’t advocate for Baseball Tonight but everyone should just cheer up by watching the “Manny being Manny” segment. (Plus it’ll get us well schooled for when he’s out in LF for us next season. (j/k or am i?)

Don, Don, Don…Manny is not over the hill just yet, so there is no way Omar signs the guy. 41+ to play LF for the Mets.

According to ESPN, with runners on base, Heilman’s OPS this year is 1.086. Hahaha….holy crap, Heilman turns every NL hitter into Barry Bonds. That is crazy. And I think that stat is before tonight’s meltdown, so it will be going up even more.

Joe Smith’s OPS with runners on is .633.

Unable to get a job in the states after his ego got in the way of managing.

        • InsaneMetsFan says:

That Ego took a far more inferior team than this to the World Series and was the only Manager to scratch out 1 win verusus the Yankees since Game 2 of the 1996 World Series.

I’ll take the Ego if it means winning.

    Highlights from heilmna talkling

    1. i made some good pitches
    2. i felt strong
    3. i got some ground balls

If thats the case, then lets face it, you suck then..

if you felt great, made pitches, you clearly suck then.

PLEASE TRADE OR SEND HEILMAN DOWN!!!!!!
