The following is my segment with Matt Yalloff during tonight’s pre-game show on SNY, during which we discuss the Confidence Rating, Ryan Church and the Subway Series:
…i probably should have waited to discuss Willie Randolph, as i suspect people may have some choice words for him following tonight’s game…
…nevertheless, if you have any constructive criticism regarding my first attempt at being a ‘talking head,’ i would appreciate hearing from you…

CERRONE FOR MANAGER!
Matt,
I love the site and think you offer great insight. However, I think that your TV presence would be much better if you used the phrase “you know” a bit less. I think that if you were to count the number of time you say “you know” it would easily be in the double digits.
Good luck with it. You are on your way.
Hey Matt, great job. Do you feel nervous when you have to do these segments? Maybe pounding a few beers before going on air would help. Haha.
Also, I would get rid of that laptop they put in front of you, which I’m guessing is more of a prop than anything else.
Too many “you knows”.
You know what I mean?
23, to be specific.
Bound to be more nervous in a longer, live format than in the Metsblog minute pieces, which I assume are taped. Don’t worry about the “you know” tic…it’ll dissipate the more you do those sorts of appearances.
That said, I’m glad they are giving you longer segments. Hopefully, you can have a larger role on SNY as a talking head (if you desire such a role) than having them focus almost exclusively on the *very* unscientific polls from the blog.
Don’t feel too bad about it. Omar says it all the time.
i think you did ok. I hate when people give you notes, since who of us has any idea how to manage a television appearance? But having said that, lose the computer or put it to the side (if you have any say over that) beacause it makes you look like your hands are behind your back, and don’t move your head so much!! Why the hell do they always have you standing (not at a desk or torso shot only)? Probably to indicate you come from the common man’s perspective, but it does seem to me having one’s whole body on screen is much more difficult for the novice than having a desk.
I guess the producers want you to report on your polls, but those results need to be heavily qualified. Why not also say a few words about the reaction Willie is getting around the blogosphere, esp. since it seems many reputable bloggers are really calling for his head (discloser: i am not one of them)? That’s at least as indicative of fan opinion IMO as an internet poll. I don’t see why they aren’t interested in this facet of your expertise–your knowledge of the various mets blogs, which in this realm act as opinion leaders, for better of for worse.
you’re up from one minute to two! you’re trending in the right direction too!
good job.
I see a Bloggers Beat half-hour show on SNY in your future.
no way! i would rather an extra half hour of BEER MONEY.
Bloggers Beat would be awesome with Matt leading the pack. I am so glad SNY put you on the team, this will only make the TV home of the NY Mets that much better now that it has the home of the Web incorporated into it.
I actually like the computer near you, it gives off that “up to the second’ type of feel. It makes me believe know that you have the latest scoop on what is going on before it leaves the carton.
Matt, I think you’re doing great, you get better each time.
But let me give you some feedback from a woman’s point of view.
Avoid the sweater vest.
Instead opt for woven button downs, either dark stripes or if you choose a solid color, then go with something light!
good job,
once you get over the butterflies you will be great.
the best way to get better on TV is to watch and listen to yourself.
I have been in the biz for a long time,
well done.
you might want to learn some voice exercises,
that way the words will come out with greater ease
and articulation.
on the polls…my favorite quote..
“there liars, damn liars and statisticians”
attributed to G B Shaw and Ben Disreali.
Maybe instead of a laptop in front of you, you can dress up as a computer chip with a bowtie and use internet buzzwords like “Call To Action” and “Above The Fold”.
Good job that stuff is nerve-racking, I agree with the “You Know” comments, Hillary Clinton does it all the time and it drives me nuts.
Let’s go mets!
“it is what it is” -Matt Cerrone
Good job…at least you didn’t pull a Sue Simmons…
good job matt..well done
Matt,
You’ve done fine on all the sny appearances I have seen. I didn’t notice the overuse of “you know” until reading some of the comments and rewatched the segment. In my opinion, you are a regular guy who is a big sports fan and that is the guy you should be on tv. Nobody should expect you to be a Chris Cotter or Matt Yalloff(both total geeks). Speek the way you speek, “you knows” included. People like Gary Cohen, Keith Hernandez, and Kevin Burkhart because they are regular, good guys who are big fans of baseball, not overly animated tv personalities. Be yourself and they will keep asking you back. Good luck and let’s go mets.
Matt good job keep t up.
However sadley as it is Im already starting to look foward to next year as scary as that seems I didnt feel this way till july last year,Lets try to get something for perez and whoever else we know wont be back next year and start to build something that does not represent a team of guys mostley born in the 70s ,Does any one else feel this way
Great job Matt, despite the “you know”s! You’re definitely improving in front of the camera. From someone who’s been there before, remember to practice talking in front of a mirror every day!
nice job, matt. glad to see that your positive outlook on the mets has led to success with the blog and on sny.
there is a lesson in that for everyone.
I have to say that I was bothered by the misrepresentation in the polls. 60% of us don’t aprove of Willie Randolph…the averge confidence in him is 6 out of 10..
I don’t know if the producers wanted you to give it a positive spin, but you’re not fooling anyone when you say that the general concensus among the fans is that we approve of willie randolph. Not even close.
On the oher hand, I thought you were absolutely fine on the screen. I didn’t notice the “you know”s at all…perhaps its because im from the region so it seems normal to me…but I gotta say the it is refreshing to hear a normal person speak on TV…I hope they continue to increase your air time…
I think you did a fine job on SNY. Everything will get much smoother the more you do it.
I would have to agree with the majority of the posts regarding the content. The Confidence Ratings stats are quite unscientific and a bit dull. I would spend more time getting into the specifics of what posters are saying.
The great thing about the blog world is that everyone’s voice can be heard. To emphasize a point, you could quickly read a few lines from select posts and perhaps respond to them.
Aside from that being more entertaining(especially if someone is funny or makes a valid point) people would watch more hoping one of their posts was chosen. People would log on and post more.
Either way, win, win.
Fantastic job on the blog. I admire your passion, keep it up.
(this was my first post)
Just a final few things before I shut down this post…
1) I was a bit nervous, to say the least, being live, with the producer talking in my ear, etc, so it’s amazing to me I even got the poll numbers correct, let alone rushed through it and accidentally misrepresented anything – if I did in fact do that. That said, I appreciate the advice, and do plan on qualifying the numbers. It bugs me that it’s such a flat statement, when I know the people voting are just a small sample of the fan base. So I do want to point this out in the future.
2) Nobody at SNY has ever suggested what I say on air or in print, so if I’m rosy or positive, it’s because I tend to be that way in general when it comes to something like sports, which is supposed to be a game and be fun. I’ve always talked and written this way, as you would know from having read the site for the last five years.
3) This was my first spot like this, so I just tried to focus and get through it. However, my larger goal is to include quotes from other comments, talk about other blogs, etc. In this case, I was just trying not to pass out.
4) I am far more comfortable in this setting than pre-taping and reading from the prompter, which was stealing any personality that I may have. This first live spot is out of the way. Next time I will be significnatly better, and I’m really excited for it.
5) THANK YOU for the support and advice. I always appreciate it.
