The NL Central and the AL West. The fact one has 6 teams and the other 4 screws up any kind of symmetry you'd have. You'd never be able to play the same number of interleague games. AL east plays NL Cent., AL E plays 18 games, NL C plays 15. Same year, AL W plays the NL E, AL W plays 15 games, NL E plays 12. Say the Mets play the Yanks, Jays, and Orioles home, and the Rays and Red Sox on the road. Next time they play the AL East (3 years later) the home sites reverse. And there's just way too much angst associated with playing the Yanks every year. Ultimately beating or losing to the Yanks in the regular season matters little in the bragging department.
