Note: Mets, Best Person in the World
By Matthew Cerrone - May 15, 2008 8:43 pm

Tonight on Countdown, MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann listed the Mets as his Third Best Person of the Day for what he described as, “The best ironic baseball promotion, adding…

“This afternoon, they already lost two runs on base running blunders.  Then, in the bottom of the ninth losing 1–0 to Washington, and Carlos Beltran at third base with one out, instead of playing it safe he broke to the plate just as Carlos Delgado lined in to an easy double play to end the game and it was all Beltran’s fault.  After the game, the Mets let all senior citizens in attendance come on to the field to walk around the bases – and Beltran came out of the dugout and got doubled off again.  Alright, I made that last part up.  None of the senior citizens had the kind of trouble on the bases that the Mets runners did.”

…great, they’re being mocked on national television…lovely

Olberman still has a tv show? Good for him!

  2. therealsince86 says:

He obviously does not read this blog, if so he would have know that it’s always Willie’s fault. Come on Olberman needs to focus, he just does not have enough drive or fire if he has not been doing his research on here.

How many posts do you have where you mock those that want Willie removed by saying “Oh yeah, and I guess ___ is Willie’s fault, too, right?”

We get it. For whatever reason, you like Randolph. We’ve been over the merits times and again. I think it’s safe to say that the tide of fan opinion is turning against him, well beyond that “vocal minority” that wants every manager fired immediately.

      • therealsince86 says:

Nope, I have said for weeks that he needs to go. So you don’t get it. I was 1 providing comic relief. 2 It is quite clear that most things are not Willie’s fault like many irrational fans will tell you, however the team needs a change and he is the best one to start with.

        • deloid says:

Exactly. Willie will make mistakes just like any other manager without a hidden crystal ball.

But…the mets need a shake up so that they can stop focusing on their slumps but refocus on something else like a new manager. The sacrificial process of sports, business, politics….

  3. Dwright5kiddflushing says:

And how many major league games has Olbermann played?

I think Beltran racing Olberman from home to first base would be even funnier, Unless Beltran missed a game because of it.

    “…great, they’re being mocked on national television…lovely…”

Well the good news is that it was on Keith’s show, so more people saw it actually happen in person at Shea than heard about if from him. :)

  5. Olbermann should focus more on his Jimmy Johnson hairdo and trying to make a funny joke more than…ummm, ever.

  6. Phantaroth says:

Olbermann is my favorite news person no matter if he twists the knife.

  7. Dwright5kiddflushing says:

    No doubt sports dog

When it comes down to it, Olbermann having public airwaves is like having Flava Flav having his own show……Ok maybe not that bad

  8. Joe D says:

Countdown has 365,000 viewers during each telecast and over 1.5 million each week.

    • toomanyuniforms says:

Yeah, but how many of those viewers are able to chew their own food?

      • Phantaroth says:

Watching Countdown, and to a lesser extend both Hardball and Verdict, is a cathartic experience for those of us… whatever you want to call us, I was going to say “far left” but I don’t consider myself “far left” so I don’t know.

Of course they are biased, and you don’t really learn anything, but it’s nice to listen to someone who I can agree with sometimes - and just get SOME enjoyment out of the political process, which has been taken away by this never-ending primary.

  9. Prismo says:

Haha yeah, I watched that live.

Yesterday, Countdown gave a tour of Citifield!

  10. Frank Taveras says:

Any hope that if we drop the next six, Willie goes? Long term its for best. He brings nothing to the table.

  11. IronMan says:

can we please get the willie confidence ranking up please …thanks , hope there is no excuse this time for it not being up …..

  12. TobeRinkler says:

    Pretty funny.

  13. The Ghost of Shea Past says:

Olberman is a detestable human being. That said, this team is certainly worthy of the ridicule.

  14. The Ghost of Shea Past says:

Can we get an Omar confidence rating going? Something like given the team’s drafting, farm system, talent scouting, stable of coaches and collection of players, how confident are you in the direction Omar Minaya is leading the organization?

  15. chew13 says:

If you want Willie gone it’s this simple. Openly Boo him. Start a ‘fire willie’ chant. The wilpons are openly concerned about their teams public image, this year more than others, as they prepare to move into CITI. They’ll respond to the message. Now i’m not advocating doing it when it’s not justified. Don’t do it just for the sake of it. I would do it but I refuse to go to Shea until this team becomes more fun to watch. (not wasting my money) In the meantime I’ll watch from home.

  16. djstue says:

Everybody was saying that Maine’s first pitch the other day would be a turning point. Guess what, we had our turning point today folks. Let’s see how they respond against the Yanks. Time to turn this around. Thank you Wags.

  17. QueenOfQueens says:

Man, I have been missing MSNBC and Keith since I got Verizon FiOS over a year ago. Now maybe its not so bad…lol

  18. the_other_matt says:

I missed the game today (thankfully) and checked in here first for the wrap up. When there wasn’t any I thought Matt was huddled in a press room at Shea awaiting the “Willie is fired” press conference….Dare to dream.

    • toomanyuniforms says:

“guys, I did my best, and I’m proud of what I’ve done. I’m proud of my guys,” blah, blah, blah. Seems like a good guy. Maybe too good to be a good manager for this team.

  19. tlagee says:

There are two types of Mets managers: the “great strategists/turn the team around” type and the “safe maintainers”. The former type includes Bobby Valentine and Davey Johnson. The latter is more the Art Howe/Buddy Harrelson/Willie Randolph. I always thought Willie entered the world of Major League managing ill prepared to run the team. His credentials of being a third base and bench coach for the Yankees - sitting next to the greatest maintainer style manager in the history of baseball - meant to me that he would be an on-the-job trainee. And, sure enough, he still is. He’s a nice guy who you want to root for, but his handling of the team - and motivating the team - leaves a lot to be desired. Willie’s insistence of sticking with Looper through August and September in his first year arguably cost us a post season shot. His mishandling of the post season in 2006 against a much weaker team cost us an appearance to the World Series. Last year was last year when the team, as a whole, forgot how to win. The Mets sloppy play so far this year is less a “hangover’ from last year as it is a reality of the way Willie’s teams perform. Davey and Bobby would find ways to get the most out of less - Art/Bud and Willie have teams that underperform.

  20. tlagee says:

Don’t doubt that, King, but I don’t get him here in Sydney, Australia.

  21. iamatwork says:

Don’t forget, Olberman is a Mets fan (and his mom was hit in the head by a ball thrown by Chuck Knoblauch!)
