Read: Subway Series Debate

by Mike Nichols on May 15th, 2008 at 10:26 am

Over at SNY.tv our very own Matthew Cerrone from MetsBlog and Steve Lombardi, who writes the very informative Yankees blog WasWatching, which is part of the SNY.tv blog Network, go head-to-head and debate this weekend’s Subway Series between the Mets and Yankees.

Each give their reasons on how their team will win this weekend’s showdown.

Cerrone believes the Mets pitching staff will be the determining factor in the Mets ability to take two of three versus the Yankees, but thinks the Mets have more to lose this weekend than their crosstown rival, writing…

The thing is, and what worries me, is that I believe the Mets have far more to lose this weekend by being embarrassed by the Yankees, than the Yankees have to lose by being embarrassed by the Mets. The expectations for the Mets coming in to this season were much higher than for the Yankees, and so – for the first time in a long while – there may actually be more pressure on the Mets.”

Lombardi also believes pitching is the Yankees key to winning the series, however history is on their side, writing…

Since 1997, the Mets have come into Yankee Stadium 10 times during the regular season (prior to this series). And, in only one of those ten visits have the Mets ever taken two of three games from the Yankees (2005). In the other three game sets, the Yankees have taken two of the three games eight times and swept the Mets once (in 2003).”

Note: Polls, Willie and Missing Comments

by Matthew Cerrone on May 15th, 2008 at 9:22 am

…i am constantly being accused of only posting polls following a win, or a positive moment…

…for the record, i post the Willie Randolph poll on Monday, win or lose, and i post the Confidence Rating poll on Wednesday, win or lose…it has always been this way…

…unless you think i have magic powers and know in advance that the Mets will play well only on Mondays and Wednesdays, there is no conspiracy theory here

similarly, i do not ban comments that demand willie be fired…sadly, comments get pulled for a variety of reasons, all of which you can learn about by reading this site’s policy on posting comments to MetsBlog…for what it’s worth, there are over 4,000 comments in on this site that include the phrase “Fire Willie,” and none of them have ever been deleted…so, if yours disappeared, you may want to consider another reason other than me protecting anything other than this site’s reputation…

Health: Schoeneweis’ Pain

by Regis Courtemanche on May 15th, 2008 at 9:13 am

Scott Schoeneweis was rushed to a Greenwich, CT hospital yesterday due to abdominal pain.

Schoeneweis, as quoted by Anthony Rieber at Newsday:

“I thought I was going to die. I was in dire straits. I looked at my arm and my arms were like blue and I was like, ‘I need to do something. I just can’t lay here.”

He was treated with IV fluids and anti-nausea medicine, and was able to make it to Shea before last night’s game.

…very scary stuff, but glad to see show is ok since we need him more than ever…before the season, who would have thought i’d be saying that, but he has been spectacular so far…

Quote: Alou’s Magic Word

by Regis Courtemanche on May 15th, 2008 at 8:46 am

After arguing a called third strike in the fifth inning, a normally even-keeled Moises Alou slammed his bat down in frustration.

Alou shouted a few words to umpire Dana DeMuth, who immediately ejected him.

Alou, on what he had said…

“I might’ve said a bad word. It was a bad call. But I’m going to get in trouble, so I don’t want to say more, or say what I really feel.”

For more on Alou, and his eagerness to finally play at Yankee Stadium, check out the Daily News.

…it was a big spot for alou, and i certainly felt his frustration…who would have known that the frustration was soon to grow worse…

Quote: He’s The Skip

by Regis Courtemanche on May 15th, 2008 at 8:27 am

Claudio Vargas pitched very well in his first start this season, and left to a standing ovation.

The 29-year-old allowed three hits and two earned runs over 6 1/3 innings. He struck out six, and walked four.

Vargas, spoke with reporters after the game…

“I felt good and I pitched good, and I gave the team a chance to win the ballgame.”

…on how he felt when Willie Randolph removed him from the game after 97 pitches…

“I felt good, he made the decision, he’s the skip, you have to respect that.”

…it’s all we could have asked for, unfortunately it wasn’t enough…as for willie removing him from the game, he couldn’t have predicted how heilman was going to pitch, but i didn’t think it was a good point in the game to take vargas out…

Quote: It’s Not Fun

by Regis Courtemanche on May 15th, 2008 at 8:13 am

Last night, Aaron Heilman threw one-third of an inning and allowed three earned runs on three hits.

The game was tied when he was called in, and he left with the Mets trailing 5-1.

Heilman, when talking with reporters…

“What can I say? I’ve been kind of up and down all year. It sucks. You’re out there to make pitches and get outs. It’s not fun when you’re not able to do that.”

…on the overwhelming boos pointed in his direction…

“It doesn’t really affect me. I don’t begrudge them for voicing their opinion. You’re just trying to go out there and compete and help the team win.”

Brian Schneider, who hit a home run in the game, on Heilman’s performance..

“It’s a shame. Hopefully he’ll keep his head because we’re going to need him.”

…like Mike Nichols said in the postgame, i almost felt bad for the guy…almost…

…the vibe at shea was so positive until the wheels fell off…heilman deservedly bore the brunt of the fans’ boos which were to an extreme you don’t often hear…it’s just so disappointing…

Quote: He Didn’t Make Pitches

by Regis Courtemanche on May 15th, 2008 at 7:59 am

After last night’s disappointing loss to the Nationals, Willie Randolph spoke with reporters.

Willie, on why he didn’t pull Aaron Heilman when he seemed to be struggling…

“In that situation, you have to let him work his way through it…we just went through the top of the lineup and I needed some length, Schoeneweis was under the weather, we wanted to stay away from Wise…so I was trying to get two innings out of him…obviously he didn’t make any pitches.”

“I don’t think this will set him back or anything like that. He’s a guy who’s a big part of our bullpen.”

…on Claudio Vargas’s performance…

“He did exactly what we needed him to do, came in and did an outstanding job for us. That’s what we’re looking for, it’s a shame we weren’t able to put together any type of attack.”

…it’s hard to determine who to blame here, heilman for not throwing well, or willie for leaving him in…it was just such a frustrating loss after vargas’ promising start…

…like schoeneweis before him, heilman will have to learn to play through the boos until he can prove he doesn’t deserve them, but for now, and i don’t often say this, he does…
