Why can’t Alou play today? He played half a game last night. As always Willie plays his worst lineup in a weekday afternoon game. He can’t be fired soon enough for me.

    • Wright88 says:

What is wrong with this lineup? Alou will always get the daygame off after the nightgame no matter how much he’s played. It’s not just about how long he was in the game, its the preparation it takes to get in the game as well. Besides we have a bunch of OF’s who need AB’s. This is your regular day game after a night game lineup so get used to it.

      • npanzeca says:

I’ve been used to it ever since Willie has been here and i’m as sick of it as I am of him. Give me a break with preperation, this guy has played baseball all his life.

      • npanzeca says:

I never knew Anderson was an outfielder, always thought he was an infielder that played outfield, thanks for that bit of wisdom.

        • Wright88 says:

Please, that is such a stupid comment. He’s a utility player, who gets most of his AB’s in the OF. Look at last years splits for him. 90 innings in the OF, only 7 in the IF.

        • npanzeca says:

Randope has made him a nearly full time OF, doesn’t mean its right.

        • Wright88 says:

Well when you have 4 or 5 2B as we did last year what do you want him to do? There are logical reasons to to criticize Willie. This is not one of them. Its petty.

        • therealsince86 says:

npanzecadope does not realize that Anderson can’t really play IF anymore except for 1B. But that’s besides the point.

        • npanzeca says:

How about not carrying that many IF’s, that could be a start. I know its not always his call but how about have some guts and debate this with Omar? Oh I forget, he never argues with umps and will never argue with Omar…….we’ll agree to disagree on this.

        • mrose says:

npanzeca is someone on this site I want an ignore button for…he never has logical or intelligent things to say, just insults the team

        • DK says:

wow i am suprised castillo is in there… wasnt all the talk he was going to the DL?

Wonder if tatis can play a little 2B…

        • cyclone says:

          Ouch….

    • Hernandez_1B says:

I agree with you that Alou should be playing today after taking half of last night off. But their “worst” lineup? Come on….besides Alou and Schneider (day game after a night game) They have their normal starting line up out there. Lets not be so mellow dramatic

      • npanzeca says:

do you really think Shrek catching and Church not in the 2 hole is a good lineup? Oh, ok

      • plasto says:

Agreed, but it sure would be nice to see Castro go last night so Pelfrey could throw to Schneider again. His last start bucked the trend, but he’s done much better with BS behind the plate so far this year.

Fingers crossed. This would be a tough one to lose.

        • plasto says:

          *would have been nice.

          need more coffee …

        • therealsince86 says:

How many starts does he have with Castro behind the plate? Maybe it was just how bad Cassanova was.

        • Wright88 says:

I don’t like Castro as a game caller, but eventually you have to learn to pitch w/o a certain catcher. Pelfrey pitched well last time w/o Schneider so we’ll see what he does this time.

        • DK says:

Yeah i was at his sat night game… even without Schneider he pitched well… After the perfomance Vargas gave, Pelfrey knows he better step up If pedro ever returns he might be out the rotation.

    • Frank Taveras says:

I agree that Willie can’t be fired soon enough, but not for this. Alou is made of glass. He needs lots of time off unfortunately.

      • npanzeca says:

I think I’ll tell my boss I only want to work 1/2 day today and not at all tomorrow, that should be fine right?

        • therealsince86 says:

If you are old and one of the best employee’s in your field then yes it most likely would.

        • toomanyuniforms says:

Are you a one-in-a-million physical talent whose productivity depends entirely on the proper function of a body ravaged by surgeries and injuries incurred through years of physical punishment playing professional athletics at the highest level?

If so, and if your body aches every morning and will for the rest of your life, go ahead and ask for a day off.

        • MetsLv31 says:

Are you older than most in your profession, very valuable to your company, and ridiculously injury prone? Then yeah I bet your boss would ok it.

        • gameball says:

Fine with me. You sound like you need a vacation.

        • therealsince86 says:

Way to really make my post look bad. Uh that’s what I was going to say.

        • MetsLv31 says:

Lol quick someone else phrase a question comparing npanzeca to Alou

        • khmustache says:

well said…the mets need his bat in september

        • therealsince86 says:

Just another typical comment by Npanzecadope.

        • npanzeca says:

I don’t get paid all the millions he does so laugh all you want considering his actions are affecting our team. Keep paying 50 or more bucks a ticket to watch an inferior product while guys like Alou laugh and go home to their mansions. The Wilpons love sheep like you.

        • therealsince86 says:

Npanzecadope, you just don’t get it. If you were that good in your job you would be paid the same ratio.

        • toomanyuniforms says:

You resent that he makes millions, but you spend a significant amount of time attacking him on a blog in the middle of the day. Ever wonder why professional athletes make millions?

        • harrychiti says:

I wondering if npazneca is commenting on metsblog while sitting at work?

That could knock a day and a half off your work week without having to ask a bosses permission…

        • npanzeca says:

I have something called pride in my job, have worked it for 30 years and don’t beg for or take days off. you are clearly part of the “its ok we are still in first” gang from 2007, how did that turn out?

        • therealsince86 says:

          Nope, dope.

        • toomanyuniforms says:

I, for one, was NOT part of that group. I saw the Collapse coming, and I wanted Willie dismissed after it happened. But I don’t have to whine about every little flipping move Willie makes. He’s not going to be fired before June 1, if at all this year. Get comfortable with that, and root for your team.

And opinions on the collapse have absolutely zilch to do with whether or not it’s prudent to sit Alou today. Nothing.

        • therealsince86 says:

Exactly. This entire Willie mess will take care of itself. If we continue to play poorly he will be fired. If we start winning he won’t and everyone SHOULD be happy. Either way I am not going to make my every post be about the impending doom of the Mets because Willie is still here.

        • npanzeca says:

I thought this place was about being able to vent if needed without being attacked. Guess I was wrong.

          Lets go Mets!!

        • therealsince86 says:

Yes Npanzecadope you were wrong, this is not a venting post. It’s a blog, one that used to be excellent until so many irrational fans came on here venting and whinning and complaining all the time about the same things over and over again.

        • MetsLv31 says:

Dude you called us sheep, apologists, and commented on thereal’s mom…

        • toomanyuniforms says:

Precisely and precisely. It’s a blog where Met fans are permitted to comment on the news and comments posted by the bloggers. There’s some venting, sure, but it’s not your headquarters for boobird primal scream therapy.

        • WozzyBear says:

I don’t agree with “npanzeca’s” comments, BUT, where on this site does it say people are not permitted to vent? I don’t see that in the rules anywhere…..

Everyone needs to get over themselves and stop telling everyone else what is permitted and what’s not. To each his/her own….

        • MetsLv31 says:

He can write about whatever he wants, but don’t complain that you’re being personally attacked while writing about someone’s mom with your next post….

        • gomets019 says:

TO ALL FANS WHO CLAIM THE WILLIE SITUATION WILL TAKE CARE OF ITSELF-THINK AGAIN!
“if we keep playing badly he’ll be fired eventually, if not June 1, then after the season”
Do you morons think time stands still?
Church and Scheider-our best offensive players so far this season are only locked up til the end of ‘09. Alou is probably gone. Fmart may or may not be ready by next year-ditto Carp and Neise. Ollie, Pedro, and Duque may all be gone for good. Wagner, Feliciano, Santana, Castillo, Castro, Anderson, Easley will all be a year older. We’ve had as much talent as anyone on paper the last 3 years and have nothing to show for it. The entire roster could be different, and not necessarily better, by the start of next year. Thats when you want to change managers-to get more from a team You’re not even sure about the identity of? Lots of you sort glass for a living, right? Rey Ordonez was right. Mets fans ARE stupid. 60% of them, judging by the latest Willie approval rating. Let’s just waste a year. No big deal, huh? Always next year. Sounds just like Willie, no wonder you like him so much. You make me sick

    • NYMBosco says:

I hpe the wilpons have seen enough of willie. He needs to go this afternoon…Typical sleepy, malaise day game lineup fielded by steady willie. He needs to rest his guys even when they haven’y played full games like alou. Unbelievable..he never shows any urgency in needing wins he must go now…

      • npanzeca says:

Be careful with your comments or risk being attacked personally. And Alou is hands off for some reason.

        • therealsince86 says:

Not his Npanzecadope, just yours. He has been on here a long time and earned it.

    • shinjosplints17 says:

You got to play Alou, he did not play the whole game last night, Not to mention the 35 he missed this year.

  2. Gasface77 says:

“RHP Jason Bergmann (0-1, 11.68 ERA) takes the hill for the Nationals. Bergmann is making his first start since being optioned to Triple-A Columbus on April 12.”

Translation: We are getting shut out.

    • npanzeca says:

Get ready for another disappointment today, maybe 1 run in 6 or 7 innings.

      • therealsince86 says:

Ok, I am getting ready. What must one do to get ready? Should I bang my head into a wall? Get drunk before the game? Should I just not even watch the game? It’s already over? I guess I should go make some bets in Las Vegas.

    • IronMan says:

ok i laughed really loud when i read that but i also feel like crying because its true …….

    • toomanyuniforms says:

Exactly what I was thinking. . . . If it was Hudson, we’d shell him.

  3. atlantasnumberonemetsfan says:

Wait..is Castillo really playing?? I thought he was going on the DL??

    • Gasface77 says:

He probably is after the game today so he will be out for the full two weeks. Why would we want to screw him with his vacation time. We don’t want no retroactive BS.

  4. met pete says:

I understand its a day game after a night game but considering Pelfreys numbers with Schneider behind the plate and anyone else why not play him. Honestly I know its May but considering last year, this is a must win game…we can’t lose 3 outta 4 to the Nats at home, a “championship” team should not do that

    • npanzeca says:

A championship team shouldn’t have to fight to win the 4th game to earn a split.

      • metaje says:

to quote willie….”its a marathon…not a spirint…its a long season man….just another game man…no sense of urgency man”…..cant wait to see you fired man (or as omar would say…”ya know”

    • cafuq says:

his last game, in which he pitched pretty well, was with castro being catcher

  5. mikey says:

I think 5 times this year the Mets have faced a pitcher who was struggling only to have trouble. Odds are that today is no different

    Chad Billingsley
    Tom Gorzelanny
    Ted Lilly
    Bronson Arroyo

  6. jimyager says:

When looking at the lineup and th epitchers you would think that the METS wil walk over the NATS and go into Yankee Stadium on a posotive note, you would be WRONG!! I have no faith at all in this team and allthough I feel that they should t-off on this NATS pitcher, I know better than that. I dont know what the team is doing , but, ITS NOT WORKING !! Eother Willie is NOT yelling enough or he is yelling to much I dont know/? They are having too many team meetings or not enough? I dont knwo, but, ITS NOT WORKING!! Its time to do something different. Dont wait until its ti late. Do whatever it takes to light a fire under this underachieving team. I hope we loose tonight and get sweept by the Yankees. Perhaps that will get them going. Im sick of the 7th and 8th inning looses and I want to see them win 5 or 6 or 7 in a row, loose 1 and win 4 more. This win 1 loose 1 is CRAP.

    • npanzeca says:

That will help out because hopefully the Wilpons will be upset enough to fire him, but that won’t happen, they are too pre occupied with what Dodger to honor next at Citifield while ignoring their own team.

    • mex84 says:

What sucks is the team is starting to resemble the 1991 and 2001clubs that just never could get it going consistently. We may be a .500 team. Sucks, but you can just hope that something happens to change that.

    • therealsince86 says:

I WILL NEVER ROOT FOR THE METS TO LOSE. That has to be one of the dumbest ideas possible. I want Willie gone but I would much rather win.
And the general idea that Willie yelling or not yelling is the answer, that’s really funny.

      • MetsLv31 says:

Agreed. If you aren’t rooting for a win why bother watching or being a fan of that team?

  7. mex84 says:

Well I remember last week we had a poll showing most of us wanted a 5-2 homestand. Sucks that it wont happen, but lets root for a 4-3 homestand! Lets go Mets! Light these punks up!

    • therealsince86 says:

No no I would rather them lose tonight and get swept by the Yankees and Braves. It’s good for the team.

    • metaje says:

you could see this coming a mile away….once again folks the mets will never ever win anything with willie….sadly it might be better to lose now while there is still time to save the season….

prediction….mets will be 3-7 on upcoming road trip….5 games out….and willie will finally be gone….let the Ken Oberkfell era begin

      • mex84 says:

Well I hope it doesnt come to that, but I am hearing great things about Wally Backman. Get it done Omar!

        • therealsince86 says:

How are you hearing great things about Wally Backman? Have you been attending spousal abuse meetings with him and Brett Myers? Who is currently telling you anything good about Wally? Seriously. That’s like me saying I am hearing good things about Gary Carter.

        • khmustache says:

the guy has won at every level…personally i’d root for cobra commander if he could get some w’s

        • mex84 says:

Publications. I dont know the whole story on the guy. He apparently has alot of baseball people who stand behind him and say he has gotten a bum wrap. Sounds like you know more then me.

        • toomanyuniforms says:

I want the Mets to win. Really do. Want Randolph to win manager of the year, take the Series, and pop champagne in a tickertaper.

          It’s never going to happen.

        • therealsince86 says:

Most likely not. Even if we were to start winning then it would be that we were supposed to win. Randolph is in a no win situation right now. Time for him to move on.

        • cyclone says:

I heard Cobra Commander racked up a lot of W’s in the Cape Cod league last year….

        • wallybackman'sfire says:

My ears are burning. Somebody talking about me? I managed the South Georgia Peanuts to a first place finish last year. I can manage any team to first place.

          Go Mets!

        • wallybackman'sfire says:

On the Mets radio-cast they said the Mets are 5 for 28 in this series with RISP……

  8. I’m with mex on this one….Let’s do what we can today to just get this W and head into the Bronx with a positive attitude!
    Let’s Go Mets!

  9. khmustache says:

the more they talk about scho the more i respect that guy. he’s one tough b*****d

still should’ve been on the dl last year though

  10. NY Cuban says:

Lets just get the W here and end up the mediocre home stand at 4-3. Lets continue the .500 baseball and we can all keep spending our money to root for this team. This team has completely drained me. Its just one game, its early. Its a little rough patch, we’ll get our rhythm soon. Can’t wait.

    • therealsince86 says:

You really should just take a break then man. I still enjoy having hope. It would be pointless for me to even keep watching the games or coming on here if I thought there was no hope for this season.

      • NY Cuban says:

See…I honestly started out that post trying to be positive. I really want to believe, but the more I typed, the more I couldn’t keep lying to myself. I hate this team. Not the Mets, I can’t stand the players in the uniform. I hate the manager. I hate the way they play the game. Its such a blah, boring style. They give me nothing to cheer for, and much less, have hope for. As least in the 90s, we knew what we were. What are we now? A .500 team? The favorite in the NL? A huge disappointment?

        • therealsince86 says:

Then at this point you may just need to move on. Pull for the Mets in general but find another pass time. You can’t get that worked up. I understand that Willie needs to go, that we are not playing up to potential and there are a lot of holes. But I still have hope that tonight when I watch the game I paid to watch that they will win and I will do the same this weekend. If they don’t I will be sad and angry but I will still have hope for the next day. Shoot I even did that all throught the 90’s. I would still get up the next morning grab the paper and look to see who one.

        • NY Cuban says:

After last year (and the fact no one was held accountable), I feel like the crazy fan (Randy Quaid) in Major League who spends the whole season waiting for the other shoe to drop.

        • khmustache says:

nice analogy…i definetly feel that way sometimes

        • therealsince86 says:

I realize that, but it’s over. We can’t go back, otherwise I would have traded Heilman, LOL.

        • cyclone says:

“Wild Thing! You make my butt sting!!!”

          LMAO

      • DK says:

seriously what have you seen in this team that gives you so much hope? tell me i want to be as positive as you but i just dont feel good about this team…

        • therealsince86 says:

Nothing, but I would be miserable without hope of them winning. What fun would that be? Do you think that the Rockies entended on going to the WS last season? There is always hope for a decent team in baseball. I really enjoy following the Mets and I have done that through the ups and downs and still look forward either way to rooting them on.

        • NY Cuban says:

Yes, but the Rockies were overachiverers, who you can get behind, admire and enjoy watching. The Mets right now are underachievers

        • You are right on the money! We sometimes forget that, in reality, we are fans of a game! Yes, we are very invested in this team and this game, but in the end it should be something we do for fun. The minute that watching them isn’t entertaining for us, we have the right to turn off the TV…or leave the stadium…or just stop following them all-together. It is our right to do that. For many of us, that isn’t an option because we simply care too much – for better or for worse. Regardless, if as fans we decide to follow this team – let’s follow them 100% of the way and see where it leads. Who knows? We may win it all…we may not…either way, I can’t stand to not be a part of it.
          Let’s Go Mets! =)

        • cyclone says:

Cuban is alright with watching where it leads, as long as it leads to Willie’s firing….

    • cyclone says:

      Where’s my champagne?

      • DK says:

when i think of champagne i think deon sanders / tim mcarver

        • cyclone says:

I wish Deion would have smashed the bottle over McCarver’s head.

Oh well, Maybe one day I will see that come true when Elijah Dukes is part of a championship club…lol

        • DK says:

haha that dude is a time-bomb hopefully he didnt hear Gary talking about his rap sheet during the game the other night…

    • mex84 says:

I took a break from the team during the 1991 season. Real frustrating but it worked. I did not read a sport article for a whole month and felt better. The team actually did well during that month and were back in contention only to fall flat on their face before the year ended. Dont watch if its affecting you so much that it pours into your daily life and makes you a miserable sod, not worth it.

    • npanzeca says:

Shhh, don’t be negative, you’ll wake all the sheep and apologists.

    • HoJoWright says:

      here, here

  11. dr jones says:

The had better not get blown out today or you’ll find me in the Mezzanine all by myself with giant poster calling for change. I say all by myself because of the lack of fan attendance lately. That right there has to show the wilpons everything they need to know.

What is going on with fan attendance lately? the ballpark is barely half full.. That is a sad turn of events for the final season at shea.

    • therealsince86 says:

Played the Reds and the Nat’s. That will do it every time.

    • NY Cuban says:

Well, I have eaten 3 sets of tickets this year because its not worth the gas or tolls to watch their display of baseball. I actually “save” money by not going. And all 3 games I ate, we lost, so I have to say I was happy I skipped.

    • shea1012 says:

The weather has been horrible. Even last night, it was nice during the day – but absolutely freezing at Shea when the game was played. Come June, when it is nice at night, the kids are out of school and we play teams like SF, SD, LAA and COL, the place will be fuller. At least god willing it will – I have eaten tickets to three games already!

  12. Thee Bruce Dickenson says:

I am starting to think the Mets are not as good as they are being portrayed to be.The way they have played so far proves they are not that special….. Hopefully, they start to play better and they are consistent or it will be a very upsetting season…. again.

  13. zen says:

i want the mets to win today. didn’t know there was another option for fans unless it was the nba or nfl and a big time draft pick was coming out.

    • therealsince86 says:

Not on here anymore Zen. I really wish that Matt would split up the comment sections. One for the ones who want the Mets to win and think they still can and one for the ones who think they can’t win and want them to lose.
Then maybe we could have actual intelligent debates on things that actually matter.

      • zen says:

there have always been a lot of critics posting and i have learned from them and have been convinced of a few arguments along the way.

unfortunately, it has really taken a terrible turn. odd since the blog itself is rational and positive.

it is what it is. let’s go mets!

  14. Nightlife says:

Wow. 100+ pissy comments and the game hasn’t even started.

  15. jay15 says:

I don’t understand how people can be complaining about the lineup. They are resting the catcher because it’s a day game after a night game. Everyone does that. And they are resting a guy who would end up on the DL for sneezing wrong.

He put Castillo in there who is most likely not 100%.

I’m no Willie supporter, but this is not a give away- getaway day lineup

  16. howellmetsfan says:

I thought the guys were going to call the game from the last row of upper reserved…Looks like they are in section 1 Upper Box!

  17. metsfan119 says:

If the Mets get behind in this game, the crowd is going to get UGLY

  18. howellmetsfan says:

Keep in mind Metsfan119, Its a bunch of little kids at the game today looks like its school trip day or something..wont be that bad ;)

  19. khmustache says:

they shoulda stayed with the blue hats

    GREAT CATCH

  20. zen says:

    best centerfielder in baseball

  21. Nightlife says:

    Awesome catch.

  22. backinbusiness says:

It’s funny listening to Keith’s shock at how small the players look from the upper deck. If it weren’t Keith, it might even border on condescending — yep, that’s what it looks like to us crazies who pay $575 for 2 tickets to sit up there every Saturday. Oy.

  23. khmustache says:

    wow what a horrible bunt

  24. howellmetsfan says:

    1,2,3 inning…. Minimal pitches, great start…..

And as I type reyes hits first pitch 6 feet for a ground out….Whats wrong with him??

    Dare I say HGH?

  25. jay15 says:

That’s 3 flyball outs for a guy who when he is “on” is supposed to be a ground ball pitcher with a good sinker.

    Should we be concerned?

  26. dr jones says:

” A leader needs to preach, He needs to preach, to those that are following, and what he is preaching, must be his belief. You must repeat and you must repeat until its understood”

    Bobby Valetine

  27. backinbusiness says:

    4 pitches, 4 bunt attempts!

In all seriousness, why does Reyes nearly always show bunt on the first pitch, not bunt, and it is almost always a strike? Very annoying and peculiar.

  28. Nightlife says:

Lets just bunt the entire game.

  29. khmustache says:

you can hear all the kids screaming in the crowd…thats a welcome change

  30. theperfectgame says:

Wow. I knew David hit lefties better, but he’s .450 against them this year versus .210 against righties. Weird…

  31. howellmetsfan says:

Wow these little kids are going to be even more amplified with there annoying screams thinking every pop fly is a homerun

  32. Nightlife says:

Watching Milledge play center is hilarious.

    • Gasface77 says:

Speaking of hilarious, what Manny did last night was one of the funniest things I have ever seen on a baseball field. He is on his own little planet. The part that is funny is that he does not try to be funny and that’s why it works.

  33. khmustache says:

    i need fuller thicker hair

  34. theperfectgame says:

How does Pelfrey look (just Gamecenter here at the office)? Is he laboring, or does he seem to have command of his pitches? So far (asde from Lopez) it seems like he’s been pretty darn efficient (can’t complain about 12 pitches in the first and 9 in the second). Although I suppose it’s still very early…

    • Nightlife says:

He looks great so far. Command is good, gettiing alot of swings and misses (though only 1k I think) and ahead in counts.

    • backinbusiness says:

he’s thrown 16 strikes out of 22 pitches. looking good.

      • theperfectgame says:

Well, that’s always a good ratio. But how is he doing in terms of location within the zone? Is he hitting the glove consistently? Thanks.

        • backinbusiness says:

I am mostly listening to the sound and taking occasional glimpes at the picture (playing it on my work computer), so I suppose it is fairer to say he “sounds” good.

  35. Nightlife says:

    Pelfrey looking sharp so far.

  36. backinbusiness says:

Big Pelf is looking good. 21 pitches through 2.

I seem to recall even a few weeks ago that concern about him tipping his pitches was the real reason for the mouthpiece, though I think he really does have TMJ. What changed? (I’m glad not to look at it!)

  37. howellmetsfan says:

    4, 5, 6 inning…. Not alot of pitches…keep it coming

  38. Gasface77 says:

..by the way, SNY is awesome. I think its great that they are doing the game from the upper deck. They should do this every year for at least one game.

  39. NY Cuban says:

Delgado is awful. He is gaining Willie status in my little notebook.

    • khmustache says:

to be fair he’s been a lot better this month…even had a 9 game winning streak…not saying we should re-sign him or anything, just saying he has been better

    • NYMBosco says:

The Mets need to ship Willie and Delgado to the South Georgia Peanuts in exchange for Wally Backman!

  40. khmustache says:

what happend to the darth vader music?

  41. howellmetsfan says:

I agree stache, Delgado’s at bats have looked better this year as opposed to last year. I know thats not saying alot. But it is true so far.

  42. howellmetsfan says:

Put a circle around that one for Mr, Wright!

  43. jws366 says:

What is this story about scho and toughness or something? People were making posts about him before but i have no idea what happened…

    • pauliemas says:

Is Willie the worst manager in the game right now?

    • khmustache says:

he spent the night in the hospital last night…something with his appendix, but it was so bad his extremities were turning blue, and he still came to the stadium. it’s just nice to see something like that when guys are going on the dl with broken fingernails (clay buckholtz).

      • jws366 says:

Who would have ever imagined that schoenweiss would be a fan favorite and Heilman would be public enemy #1 by may?

  44. twassel says:

He woke up yesterday in intense pain similar to post-chemo symptoms from when he had testicular cancer. He had to call an ambulance to take him to the hospital, where he was treated.

  45. howellmetsfan says:

Crap, the real Mike Pelfrey is trying to take over..

  46. Nightlife says:

    Ruhroh.

    Come on Pelf.

  47. Nightlife says:

    Alright, nice recovery.

  48. howellmetsfan says:

I DVR’d that Bobby V Special…anyone here watch it? any good?

    • marvelousmarv says:

It was okay. Nothing great. It was more about him in Japan than anything else so it was hard to get into it for that reason.

    • khmustache says:

really good…just weird seeing him in japan

      • dr jones says:

its going to be on again on Monday at 3pm eastern time Espn2..

I’m watching it again right now.. He truly is the anti Willie and a great leader..

” A leader needs to preach, He needs to preach, to those that are following, and what he is preaching, must be his belief. You must repeat and you must repeat until its understood”

        Bobby Valetine

  49. marvelousmarv says:

I’m going to call it now….NO HITTER

  50. howellmetsfan says:

marvelous im going to call it now, u just Jinxed it!

  51. casey s. says:

I would love to see the following stat:

What the ERA is against the Mets for pitchers that have a plus 5.00 ERA in general.

    I bet you it’s sub-3.50.

  52. Nightlife says:

Damnit Jose. 2 abs, 2 pitches seen.

  53. howellmetsfan says:

He might be ugly to watch be Castillo is 2-2.

  54. marvelousmarv says:

he can’t do that after the pitcher makes an out. His head still isn’t straight from last year. He’ll show a flash here and there. If it keeps going like this we’re in trouble.

  55. arudeawakenin says:

I think Willie should move Castillo to the leadoff role and Reyes into the 2nd spot.

until reyes gets his game back of course.

  56. howellmetsfan says:

Wow its like they let a kid from the upper deck play RF for a play!

  57. khmustache says:

    LET’S GO KEARNSY…LET’S GO

    LET’S GO KEARNSY…LET’S GO

    LET’S GO KEARNSY…LET’S GO

  58. Nightlife says:

Kearns has been pretty awkward this inning.

    • backinbusiness says:

this series, really. yesterday (was it the day before?) he had that super weird leap on the church hit.

  59. ToastyJoe says:

Howie said Wright and Castillo weren’t running hard on the dropped pop-up. True? This is the kind of crap that should not be acceptable to Willie.

    • Biscuit says:

Remember when Reyes was benched because he didn’t run out a ball?

Too bad Castillo is not 22 years old or Willie would have benched him too. What is not good for Reyes to do is OK for Delgado and Castillo to do.

    • khmustache says:

agreed…he sat reyes for the same thing last year

    • backinbusiness says:

on the replay, david is actually walking out of the box. no good, “captain.”

    • Koko says:

Well if that is what Willie should be fired for, every manager in baseball should be fired for their players doing exactly the same thing.

Routine flyball for the 3rd out that was dropped. 99% of MLB players would have run with the same speed. 0.5% would have hustled a little more. The other 0.5% would have been thrown out at 1st or 3rd for not even running that fast.

      • ToastyJoe says:

A manager should only be fired for something like this if it’s affecting the bottom line, i.e., wins and losses. I absolutely think the Mets’ laid-back, lazy attitude resulted in the collapse last year and the mediocre start this year.

      • dykstraw says:

no other manager in baseball is managing the 3rd highest payroll after one of the worst collapses ever last year

        • Koko says:

There are two managers that are managing teams with higher pay rolls and doing worse then the Mets.

The collapse wasn’t Willies fault or one players fault or any one person’s fault.

It was a total team collapse. There was very little a manager could have done to stop it.

  60. Nightlife says:

And of course the only solidly hit ball this inning is right at someone.

  61. HoJoWright says:

can we pleaes not swing at the first pitch and make this pitcher work a little

  62. khmustache says:

kranepool just said he wants to do steroids! hilarious

  63. pauliemas says:

ever since willie has been here, can you remember the mets winning a game they had to have?

    collapsed in sept of 05

collapsed in oct against a weaker team, even got swept by worst team in NL when trying to clinch.

collapsed against washington and florida last year.

.500 team this year on a team labeled best team in NL

not sure how anyone can support this loser, he has done NOTHING to show that he can win a big game.

    • Nightlife says:

Are you bot? Because I swear you’ve made the exact same posts in this thread about 30 times now.

  64. goheels42 says:

Keith said someone would of scored if they were busting their butt, and that Wright should have been on 2nd.

The replay clearly shows Castillo, head down in a casual jog, and I don’t want to hear why risk his quad on a routine ball, if it’s a risk, DL him.

  65. jws366 says:

Delgado is the master of the “off-thebag-tag.”

    • casey s. says:

and, wright is the master of the “can’t throw straight” play.

      match made in heaven?

  66. howellmetsfan says:

i think watching the replay Castillo is still running very gingerly, i can give him a lil break, David stoop there like a girl pissed at himself

    • Biscuit says:

If so, then put him on the DL or the bench…

This is why Willie is hated by many. He sat Reyes for not running hard, yet when the vets do it, there is always an excuse.

Anyone ever fire a manager in-game?

      • backinbusiness says:

        Wright’s not a vet.

I suppose it is possible that Willie decided what he did to Reyes was a mistake? (I don’t, necessarily.)

      • gomets019 says:

I love it, an in-game firing. Finally something to root for this season!

  67. edwin nieves says:

this guy has a 12 era and he’s shutting us out! Some Sad Sh!t.

    • Gasface77 says:

see my post all the way at the top of this thread. That was a given before the game started.

  68. BillySandman says:

    church homerun… calling it now.

  69. theperfectgame says:

Good inning from Pelfrey. Pitch count back on track.

  70. Nightlife says:

Nice comeback inning for Pelf after struggling a little in the 3rd.

  71. dykstraw says:

hey guys, relax. it’s not the manager’s job to get his players to play hard.

  72. reyes has NO discipline, and he never will.
    he’s an idiot savant.
he swings like a sandlot kid- no pitch counts, no walks…

the mets have to STOP referring to him as the Catalyst.
he’s way too inconsistent to rely on.

  73. jws366 says:

Those chairs must be so uncomfortable compared to the studio seats…

  74. PacmanJones says:

For those of us at work, did Wright not run out a ground ball or something?

    • ToastyJoe says:

Failed to run out a pop-up that was dropped. Ended up on first, should’ve been on second. Unacceptable.

    • jws366 says:

No, Wright hit an easy pop up to Austin Kearns who dropped it…had wright been running it out full speed he would have been at second…but I don’t think its THAT big of a deal…

he should have been at second, but im not going to crucify him for it…same goes for castillo

    • Koko says:

He hit an extremely routine flyball to Austin Kearns. 99.9% of the time it is caught for the third out. Both Wright and Castillo slow jogged to their bases. Kearns ended up dropping the ball (have no idea why). Wright only got to first and Castillo only got to third. If they had run harder, Wright would have been on second and Castillo probably would have scored.

    • khmustache says:

pop fly with 2 outs and castillo on. austin kearns dropped it, but since luis and david weren’t running they had to settle for first and third. castillo had a shot at home and wight should’ve been on 2nd

  75. Koko says:

Well if Castillo and Wright is what what Willie should be fired for, every manager in baseball should be fired for their players doing exactly the same thing.

Routine flyball for the 3rd out that was dropped. 99% of MLB players would have run with the same speed. 0.5% would have hustled a little more. The other 0.5% would have been thrown out at 1st or 3rd for not even running that fast.

It’s wrong, but it’s the culture of baseball these days throughout MLB.

    • NY Cuban says:

No, Willie should be fired for soooooooo many things, I don’t have that kind of time.

      • PacmanJones says:

Ny Cuban… shhh you’re being pessimistic and bitter, I’m not sure what gave you the impression that Willie should be fired, but you should have a brighter outlook on life!!

Lol… sarcasm. Look below my brother.

        • Koko says:

Both of you should have a brighter outlook on life. It’s only baseball. We all have much more important things to worry about in the grand scheme of things.

        • gipper82475 says:

That’s the difference between a baseball fancier (it;s just a game, it;s a pleasant way to pass a summer night, it’s the past time) and a baseball fan (living and dying with every pitch, fully invested in their team, etc).

  76. PacmanJones says:

This team is an absolute joke, losing 2 of 3, soon to be 3 of 4, to the WORST road team in baseball. Guaranteed this game goes scoreless into the 7th, when the Nats then score a few runs and the mets bats stay asleep with the attitude, “oh, its over anyways.” I swear after the depleted Yankees beat us up this weekend its time for Willie’s head to roll… right off his armed crossed shoulders. While we’re at it, somebody tell this loser to shave his little pathethic mustasche.

  77. goheels42 says:

What are the odds we see Heilman trotting out for the 7th????

  78. Bruce Boisclair says:

So, for those of us following in the office, is Pelfrey as good as his line looks today? (Especially the lack of hits…. I didn’t say the magic words so no jinx.)

Wish they could get some hits off of Bergmann– I thought they would slam him today.

    • khmustache says:

not bad. wouldn’t call it a gem, his control is hit and miss, but he’s been getting outs when he needs them

    • almar1965 says:

Thought they would slam A pitcher with a 11.00+ ERA to start the game?

You must have this team confused with another team.

  79. stickguy says:

I like this pelfrey better, but why does the offense look good for a while, then suddenly disappear? They hit better aginst the top pitchers out west than against these scrubs.

  80. jws366 says:

    He just shot the clown!

  81. dr jones says:

    “you just shot the clown”

    Keith Hernandez

  82. PacmanJones says:

It doesn’t matter about the jinx, Willie is going to pull Pelfrey in the 7th after he gives up his first hit, proceed to bring in Heilmian who will give up 4 runs and at the press conference when Willie is asked if it will effect his decision making in similiar tight spots he’ll respond with….

    Are you ready??

“NO, HEILMAN IS A BIG PART OF OUR BULLPEN, I TRUST MY GUYS.”

Willie, didn’t you say that last night?

“GUYS, YOU NEED TO TRUST YOUR GUYS, I TRUST HEIL, I WIlL CONTINUE TO TRUST HEIL, HE’S BEEN LIGHTS OUT FOR US.”

Willie, he hasn’t been lights out since 2006.

    “I TRUST MY GUYS”

  83. metsfan119 says:

I’d love to see Pelfrey throw 9 no-hit innings but lose in the 10th 1-0

  84. metsfan119 says:

The fact of the matter is you know the second the Mets give Pelf a lead he’ll implode

  85. mr.gee21 says:

Willie: “I just don’t like the way Pelfrey is tossing. I think I’ll get Heilman up. He can finish this game off.”

    • PacmanJones says:

Speaking of which, is Free Willie aware that there is a man named Pedro Feliciano on this team?

  86. howellmetsfan says:

Wow watching Kearns play Right is almost like watching Hundley Play Left…shudder…

  87. NY Cuban says:

    Will we see Heilman today?

    • Biscuit says:

      Next inning….of course!

“I thought Pelfrey was gassed, guys.,” says Willie. “I mean he threw 70 pitches in a day game after a night game.”

“Um, Willie, he didn’t pitch last night,” answers the reporter. “In fact, all he did was sit on the bench.”

      “I’m confused,” Randolph replies.

“Willie, um, did you think that a day game after a night game affects everyone?” the reporter asks.

      “Yeah…am I wrong?” he answers.

      (SILENCE)

“Look, I know my guys,” Willie says with his arrogant tone as he walks out of the room.

      • PacmanJones says:

Dude, you gotta be careful with the mock conversation. The pro-willie crowd, Willie lovers will jump all over you. See above.

  88. Bruce Boisclair says:

By the way, not to beat a dead horse, but I am impressed by Flores. I don’t know how he projects, but he is still young and looks like he will be a Molina-type catcher.

(I actually think that with Schneider, we have one of the best catchers around from a defensive standpoint, and his offense has been OK so far. Looks like the pitchers love him…)

  89. howellmetsfan says:

Delgado wants to be a manager fine…Fire willie, Delgado can manage and lets go out and get Texeira or call up Carp!

  90. jws366 says:

I will die if Pelfrey is the first…

  91. Nightlife says:

    Pelfrey is pitching great.

  92. howellmetsfan says:

If Big Pelf does do what were not going to say hes doing so far, every game will be announced from the upper box!

  93. GeorgeThomas says:

Big Pelf is throwing a no-hitter and Bergmann (he of the 11.00+ ERA) hasn’t allowed a run.

    WTF is going on?!?!?!?!

  94. backinbusiness says:

Just wanted to say, Go Big Pelf!, since an onlooker might think from the comments above that the Mets were losing this game.

    Geez.

  95. gometzies_18 says:

How great would it be if PELFREY threw the only no-hitter in Shea?

  96. metsfan119 says:

Jesus, this guy has an ERA over 10, I know the Mets lineup blows, but can they at least get a run off this guy?

  97. theperfectgame says:

Boy, the Nats are bailing Pelfrey out somewhat with regards to that pitch count. They’ve had several 1 or 2 pitch ABs following 7 or 8 pitch ABs.

The pitcher I honestly covet is Roy Halladay. No one throws fewer pitches to get a hitter out than he does. It’s such a shame his career has been wasting away north of the border…

  98. metsfan119 says:

    Reyes took a pitch!

    • WozzyBear says:

And he struck out on a crappy pitch….Man, he just swings at everything and anything these days!

  99. theperfectgame says:

gotta be able to help yourself, Pelf…

  100. gipper82475 says:

Gotta love Eddie Kranepool calling out Willie. Quite an indictment from the quintessential Met.

Great game so far by pelf. So much for the “he can only pitch tio Schneider” theory.

  101. Nightlife says:

Okay, Jose lets not make it 3 abs 3 pitches 3 outs.

  102. METS08WSCHAMPS says:

REYES IS A D O G, HE WAS LAST SEPTEMBER AND IS NOW!

    • NYMBosco says:

Reyes needs to be benched for a couple of games and he needs a meeting with omar and willie to get to the bottom of what his problem is ADD, drugs, alcohol….whatever is caudsing his putrid play. Ever since he was signed to that contract last year he has been dogging it…

  103. metsfan119 says:

Remember the days when we legitimately compared Reyes with Jeter and Rollins? Seems like ages ago

    • dykstraw says:

remember how we laughed at phillies fans who claimed that rollins was as good as reyes? boy do i feel stupid.

      • metsfan119 says:

I never thought anyone could be more overrated than Jeter, but Reyes proved me wrong

  104. mr.gee21 says:

Hey, Reyes took some pitches. Way to go.

  105. PacmanJones says:

Everytime this ballclub faces a pitcher they’ve never seen with an ERA over 9, that means 8 scoreless innings against the mets. Don’t even need to watch this team against this type of pitcher. Put Brandon Webb, Hudson or Peavy on the mound though and we’ll put up 3 in the first 2 innings.

    • gipper82475 says:

Really have to question the quality of the Mets advance scouts.

    • jws366 says:

Can Matt call up the Elias Sports Bureau for this on? I would imagine its a really embarassing stat…

      • PacmanJones says:

If we compared the Mets hitters AVG from 2006-2008 against pitchers who previously won 15 games to those pitchers they’ve never seen before, I GUARANTEE they hit better off of 15 game winners then the rookies and journeymen with career 8 ERAs.

  106. khmustache says:

    old guy stealing!

  107. metsfan119 says:

How does Wright have so many RBIs? I never see him get hits with runners on

  108. howellmetsfan says:

Jose Reyes…Most Exciting player in Baseball

    RIP

    2003- September 2007…..

  109. METS08WSCHAMPS says:

Anyone here the guy who called wfan this morning and said Reyes is doing drugs?

  110. PacmanJones says:

Ready for the goldenboy to choke AGAIN with RISP? I love how SHEA gets on everything for choking except the golden boy. They better shower him with boos if he makes an out here.

    • PacmanJones says:

      +1 BOOOOOOO

    • theperfectgame says:

The guy’s at or near the top of the team in just about every offensive category. He’s also near the top of the league in categories like RBI and OBP and OPS. Not everyone can play like they do on your MLB 2K8 game…

  111. METS08WSCHAMPS says:

DAVID WRIGHT STINKS! WHEN IS IT TIME FOR MET FANS TO START TO GET ON THIS STIFF. HE NEVER GETS A BIG HIT! HE IS TEFLON DW!

  112. howellmetsfan says:

Just a question…Why arent we Booing Wright out of the Stadium yet??

    • PacmanJones says:

      Thank You…

      • metsfan119 says:

I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that he had a great season last year and actually showed up in September. He also has 32 rbis (although god knows how, I can’t remember the last big hit he’s had)

        • PacmanJones says:

Wright accumulates a lot of AROD rbi’s… with big leads or a big defecit. Anything remember Wrights LAST walk off hit? How about even a go ahead hit in the 9th on the road? Anyone?

  113. boomingranny says:

    oh please

  114. zen says:

wack-jobs are out en mass today.

    let’s go mets! big pelf!

  115. GeorgeThomas says:

Of course the first Met no hitter will happen while I’m stuck at work.

I secretly hope Big Pelf doesn’t do it. Sorry, just being honest.

  116. jws366 says:

“See what happens when you throw strikes?”

  117. METS08WSCHAMPS says:

NO ONE SAY THE 2 WORDS PELFREY IS DOING RIGHT NOW!

    • PacmanJones says:

It’s already been said about 15 times already in these exact comments, pay attention.

  118. effectivelywild says:

    Gary shut up!

  119. boomingranny says:

    too late

    • PacmanJones says:

You guys obviously don’t know Cohen, he’s notorious for stating “the first 15 retired,” “hitless through 6,” “the first 18 retried” before going to every commercial break during this special time.

  120. howellmetsfan says:

Zen im not saying anyone deserves to be booed, but if Fans are going to boo on bad performance,, why is Wright exempt, last 2 weeks hes been Horrid!

  121. metsfan119 says:

Can we please get a freaking run for this guy

  122. boomingranny says:

    oh puhleez , boo shmoo

  123. Nightlife says:

    Man, Pelfrey.

I should just stop watching this game now. I’m getting false hopes. I mean this is Mike Pelfrey.

  124. batsinthepelfrey says:

not a word from here on out……

  125. PacmanJones says:

Does it matter if Pelfrey does it in 9? I mean, does anyone honestly think we can string a run together off of BERGMAN in the next 9 outs?

  126. Santanaman says:

I’m affraid if we put a few on the board that we will jinx Big Pelf

  127. m00kie says:

    where’s the mouthpiece?

  128. GeorgeThomas says:

Does he have the mouthpiece in or out today?

  129. mr.gee21 says:

Gosh, just imagine how much better Pelf could be doing with Schneider in there. Oh, wait…

  130. Wondy says:

Well, we’re through the 6th. Time to get somebody up in the pen in case Pelf allows a baserunner.

  131. edwin nieves says:

Wouldn’t be surprised if Pelf were to pitch a no hitter thru 9 innings and the Mets not get a run for him! Almost. Only good in bombs, horseshoes, and the NY Mets.

  132. Bruce Boisclair says:

So, hypothethically, is it possible that if the current state of affairs continues (or we have to pinch hit in the 8th), could Willie put it Wagner to close it out in the 9th?

  133. metsfan119 says:

this offense is just a disgrace

  134. npanzeca says:

Shame we can’t even score 1 run off this bum, it was totally predictable though.

  135. METS08WSCHAMPS says:

Wright has not done a thing since Saturday April 19 in Philly. Trace the numbers. he was on fire that weekend and that has been it.

  136. miltenberg says:

this is getting crazy…a mets pitcher going more than 6 innings…is randolph asleep at the wheel??? yank pelf! can’t we at least pinch hit for him so endy chavez can ground out?

  137. mex84 says:

Man, if this goes 9 innings at 0-0 and Pelf is still on his game, MASS CHAOS SHALL ENSUE!

    • PacmanJones says:

Willie will yank him hitless after he walks 2 in this inning because “he was really tiring.”

    • NYMBosco says:

This lazy, pathetic offense of willie’s can’t even get a run for a guy who is pitching his heart out! Typical, tired, lazy looking malaise of a dead team…..no life, no fire, ground outs, strike outs, pop outs…..fire HoJo along with Willie…get rid of the entire coaching staff

  138. shamsky says:

Come on Willie. Let’s take Pelfrey out and bring in Heilman..

  139. Santanaman says:

yeah, that’s the way to be tough Delgado

  140. npanzeca says:

    And Delnoto K’s yet again.

  141. PacmanJones says:

I feel a Petey situation coming on. Pelfrey will get robbed out of the biggest accomplishment a pitcher can have because this team fails to put a run together off of a pitcher with a 9ERA.

  142. NY Cuban says:

If Willie blows this somehow, can he please be fired on the spot?

  143. Bruce Boisclair says:

Is Bergmann throwing junk… does he have anything on his pitchers or do the Mets just look lost?

  144. toomanyuniforms says:

Haven’t been keeping up with the thread, and will probably get attacked for this, but why would any pitcher, on any team, anywhere throw a fastball to a Met hitter. They flail at slop like starving sows. Maybe HoJo (notorious first ball fastball hitter in his day) should be let go. . . .

  145. metsfan119 says:

just get it over with Pelfrey, let me feel the pain now

  146. mr.gee21 says:

    Arrrrrrrrrrrgggghhhh

  147. gomets6091 says:

how ironic would it be if the Mets offense blew a chance for a rhymes with schmo-bitter today?

    • gomets6091 says:

never mind then…that’s what happens when you’re following the game at work. At least he’d already given up the hit by the time I posted that, so no jinx!

  148. mr.gee21 says:

Okay, put Heilman in now. Sigh.

  149. howellmetsfan says:

Is Gary intentionally trying to mention it as often as possible??\\

    And thats that

  150. theperfectgame says:

    C’est la vie…

  151. rogasm says:

    There goes that

  152. casey s. says:

so, now that he’s given up a hit…what? a FOUR run inning for the Nats?

    • toomanyuniforms says:

Maybe the oh-so-sensitive Met hitters will stop “pressing,” and actually hit some of the slop they’re getting.

  153. metsfan119 says:

Now the Mets can concentrate on losing this series

  154. METS08WSCHAMPS says:

AARON BLEEPIN BOONE! HERE COMES HEILMAN

  155. NY Cuban says:

    Thanks Gary.

  156. backinbusiness says:

Good job, Big Pelf. Nicely done. I wish I had my Go Big Pelf shirt on here at work . . . in Philly.

  157. metsforever says:

That should just about do it. Pelf falls apart, bullpen will make it out of reach.

Every team should start a random minor leaguer against the mets. Is it me, or do these type guys always clamp down on this team.

  158. mr.gee21 says:

That throw out should erase the hit. Too bad…

  159. METS08WSCHAMPS says:

    RAMON!

  160. toomanyuniforms says:

Man, that .640 OPS sure would fit in great on the Mets. The LMillz lovers can at least admit one thing: he wasn’t ready to play every day.

  161. khmustache says:

    nice throw ramon!

  162. Gasface77 says:

Castillo credit on that tag….nice play.

  163. PacmanJones says:

At least I didn’t miss the no-no stuck at work, would have never gotten over that, glad boone got the hit. Look at the bright side, HERE COMES HEILMAN! Can we bring him in the 6th instead of 7th? That way we’ll have four 1-2-3 innings to try to make up for his destruction.

    • GeorgeThomas says:

I agree about the no-no. Oh, well.

    • NYMBosco says:

Ok I want to see some serious pinch hitting going on to try to rally for a damn run. Alou better be coming off the bench to pinch hit..

  164. twassel says:

All you pessimists think every negative comment is clever. It’s just so boring. Watch the game. Root for your team. You’ve got a great pitcher’s duel going on here. Enjoy it. Or STFU.

    • PacmanJones says:

      Willie Lover.

      • atlantasnumberonemetsfan says:

Dude..you’re the one that wants the Mets to lose here…so you can get your pathetic way….stfu

        • PacmanJones says:

I can’t get my way heh? My way would be to win a championship, but it looks like you’re content with playing .500 baseball for the past 150 games? Dude. Please stop using “stfu” it shows how unintelligent you really are and you counter points with statements that are irrelevant.

    • backinbusiness says:

Agreed, and so do many of us.

Big Pelf has gone 7 strong, and counting. 89 pitches. This is simply an awesome start for Pelf, and I’m enjoying it.

    • toomanyuniforms says:

Buddy, if you can’t handle a few negative comments about a team that can’t score against a pitcher with an ERA in the stratosphere and is at risk of losing 3 of 4 at home to the dregs of the league, you need help. If this is so boring, leave. Otherwise, refute the posts, don’t just condemn the posters. Today is OBVIOUSLY a mixed bag thus far. Happy and excited for Pelf, flummoxed by the utterly hapless Met offense.

  165. atlantasnumberonemetsfan says:

    THROUGH 7…NICE JOB BIG PELF….

  166. mr.gee21 says:

Come ON — get Pelf a freakin’ win here!

  167. howellmetsfan says:

This is turning into a grueling game of who wants it least!

    • PacmanJones says:

Yeah, it’s a lazy getaway day. Although the mets are only going across town, so they have no motivation to get away. This will go into extras IF and only IF we don’t see Heilman until the 10th or beyond.

    • gipper82475 says:

      Just about. I mean, I love pitchers’ duels…but it’s a guy with an ERA over 10! C’mon!

  168. I_Need_More_Cowbell_Please says:

Wow! Big Pelf can go another inning maybe?

    • Wondy says:

Due up third this inning….if it’s not a sacrifice situation, i’m sure he’s gone.

      • I_Need_More_Cowbell_Please says:

such a shame… Vargas didn’t deserve the L last night… and Big Pelf def deserve a W here

    • blains2000 says:

      Only 91 pitches so maybe.

      • Biscuit says:

Not with “Quick Hook Willie” in the dugout…

      • PacmanJones says:

I’m sorry, any pitcher that has an ERA of 8 and pitches against the mets for the first time? 8 scoreless & 10 Ks. Thats more like it. UNHITTABLE BERGMAN KOUFAX.

        • I_Need_More_Cowbell_Please says:

when a pitcher with a bloated ERA come pitch against the Mets automatically becomes a CY Young contender!
          grrrrr

        • PacmanJones says:

I wouldn’t go that far, they go RIGHT BACK to being garbage in their next start against the cellar dweller.

      • NYMBosco says:

What is up with castro? He doesn’t have a hit since being activated! This sucks since Schneider is swinging the bat well…

        • Biscuit says:

Not like he has had many chances to get in a groove. Gotta get him in there more often.

  169. Mingo says:

He should go until he tires out. Not until he reaches a pitch limit.

  170. lewchr says:

Problem is that he is due up this inning

  171. Koko says:

Great job by Pelf. He didn’t implode/explode after giving up the hit and then hitting a batter.

    7 great innings!

Let’s see if the offensive players are up to doing anything.

  172. mex84 says:

Great job by Pelf today when we needed it! Cant say much for the hitters though. Lets get the kid a win!

  173. Nightlife says:

    Well, so much for that.

  174. lewchr says:

Is this back to back solid starts for him?

  175. theperfectgame says:

    89 pitches thru 7… ahhh, that’s the good stuff…

  176. khmustache says:

    sweet! the kids gonna bat!

  177. backinbusiness says:

Pelf is up batting, anyone care to retract their comments?

  178. Bruce Boisclair says:

Interesting how both pitchers have about the same pitch count.

    Bergmann has 8K’s— unbelievable.

  179. shamsky says:

    Nice inning Mets!!!

  180. Kugaa says:

this is a good game glad for pelfrey

  181. twassel says:

If Pelfrey gives one up next inning (and I hope he doesn’t), how soon will the first Willie criticism be posted (”he gave up 2 baserunners last inning. He obviously lost it! Willie is an idiot!) Over/under: 30 seconds.

  182. blains2000 says:

This dude has lowered his era by 4 runs. Geez!

  183. howellmetsfan says:

    HERE COME HEILMAN

  184. npanzeca says:

Here comes the run that will end it. Man on 2nd, 0 out.

  185. dr jones says:

Other than the pitchers i looks like nobody wanted to play today. Awful approach by the Mets. Do they ever have a game plan against these struggling pitchers.

  186. khmustache says:

keith “you can bet your sweet bibby he’s gonna bunt”

  187. dr jones says:

They better not loose 3 of 4 to the Nationals…. This is just mind boggling…

    Welcome to the suck.

  188. Biscuit says:

why not walk Lopez here? set up the DP….

  189. GeorgeThomas says:

Nice job keeping him in Willie!
    BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

  190. PacmanJones says:

Game over. PUT IT IN THE BOOKS!

  191. npanzeca says:

And there is your ballgame folks.

  192. Gasface77 says:

What a hard luck loss this is going to be for Big Pelf.

    • Gasface77 says:

…as a matter of fact, if the mets do not score in the bottom of the inning and get Pelf the win, I’m going to Yankee stadium to boo everyone I see tomorrow night. Mets fans, Yankees fans, Santana, Ed Kranpool, Gary Cohen, etc.

      • PacmanJones says:

Dude, the Yankees are playing 500 ball with their roster on the DL, using a roster full of back ups and triple A/double A players, we’re playing to the same tune in a much weaker division with a roster full of “superstars,” although some have mentally traded in their cleats for a pair of reggaetone addidas classics.

    • PacmanJones says:

Vargas and Pelfrey back to back days good pitching wasted. Really shameful. I feel the good ole’ grassroots FIRE WILLIE MOVEMENT has gained a few more supporters this afternoon?

      • backinbusiness says:

What exactly did Willie do wrong in this game? It looked to me like All Star Mets couldnt hit a(nother) bad pitcher?

        • toomanyuniforms says:

Willie is a macro problem. Big picture is that this team can’t get anything consistent going. This game is no different.

        • BigHangWithEm says:

Maybe if the manager benched someone other than his favorite whipping boy (Reyes) for making awful boneheaded plays, the Mets would play with more urgency.

Maybe if Willie didn’t rip players that are contributing (Pagan) the team wouldn’t constantly lay down and die around him.

Maybe if Omar did the right thing and fire the manager that was at the helm of last year’s debacle and the 2006 playoff debacle, the Mets would play up to their talent level.

Being a winning ML manager is soooo much more than making pitching changes (which Willie consistantly botches) and lineup moves. Willie is just not an effective leader of men.

  193. Mingo says:

Okay so they get an easy run. I still leave Pelfrey in. If the Mets can’t score a run, they aren’t going to win anyways.

  194. howellmetsfan says:

Lets Go Mets, Show some Heart and win this one for this kid who pitched his ASS off!! Score some damn runs next inning!

  195. PacmanJones says:

Guys, I’m at work, tell me Aaron is AT LEAST warming?

  196. Mingo says:

    Don’t yank him willie

  197. dr jones says:

New Mets slogans for this season

The 2008 Mets, Welcome to the Suck.

  198. Mingo says:

Not only is Aaron warming up, he is warming up both lefthanded and righthanded.

  199. backinbusiness says:

I agreed with keeping Big Pelf in until this spot and I agree with pulling him right here.

  200. npanzeca says:

A 3-4 homestand before going on the road for the Yankees and Braves, very nice!

  201. ravi3 says:

Is Willie going to left Pelf finish the inning?

  202. miltenberg says:

even right now I STILL wouldn’ t take him out…what’s the point? let him get the out…please quick show of hands who agrees with me

  203. Kugaa says:

have some faith in the team

    • npanzeca says:

I do, faith they aren’t scoring today.

    • ravi3 says:

seriously…ever since Metsblog got big exposure all these jokers came in, and intelligent commetary went flying out the window. I don’t understand why these people bother watching games and posting here. I’m as diehard as the next guy, but have some faith…sheesh. Clearly most of them weren’t watching between 2002-2004.

      • dykstraw says:

or the mets started completely sucking

but let’s go with your theory lol

        • ravi3 says:

Plus I’m not saying I’m satisfied with things at all…I am very frustrated it, but I still pull for the jersey. As long as Willie has the blue and orange, I will pull for him. He’s not the best guy, and yes he makes questionable moves. I’d also welcome the addition of a better equipped manager. However, I’m not going to take every opportunity to blast him, because it’s pointless. As long as he’s here, you’ve gotta support the guy.

      • PacmanJones says:

Oh, the years that our payroll was 45 million opposed to 2ND IN THE MLB?!?!?! Yeah, those years.

      • toomanyuniforms says:

“Faith” is “intelligent commentary”? I’m no fan of incessant, tiresome Willie-bashing, which is just noise, but I don’t see a lot of “intelligent commentary” from either side. You can intelligently pick apart what’s wrong with the team. Plenty to work with.

        • ravi3 says:

Well I guess my post was a little confusing. I’m not saying faith is intelligent commentary…This used to be a forum for rational debating over our team…Now it seems like with every loss, the board becomes a place for unabashed Willie hating. All I am saying is that the people who are so negative need to not be so rash when discussing the team.

        • toomanyuniforms says:

You’re very right. Unfortunately, they have a point (this time), even if they can’t articulate it. The manager usually isn’t the problem. Here, it actually might be. Hence, the mob smells blood.

        • ravi3 says:

But you can articulate that point without sounding like a jack@$$

        • gipper82475 says:

Some people can, some can’t. Doesn’t change the underlying fundamentals that the team is a .500 team for about a year now and that nobody was held accountable for The Collapse. This leads to short tempers. Understandably so.

      • koosman says:

yes, or between 1962-68. Or 1977-83. Or 1991-96.

        • toomanyuniforms says:

So, because the Mets have really, really, really stunk, we should all be happy when they just sort of stink?

        • koosman says:

not at all. just trying to have a sense of humor about baseball. that is what it is, not life and death.

        • toomanyuniforms says:

I look at it the other way. It’s the people who can’t deal with any “negativity,” whatsoever who are taking it too seriously. Obviously, a lot of it is repetitive and tiresome, but so are the nagging comments about “believing in the team,” etc.

        • koosman says:

Well, if they would start winning a bit that would fix everything. :-)

    • PacmanJones says:

Name one instance where this club instilled faith in you post 06 Endy Chavez catch?

    • Runshouse says:

      Faith is bull.

  204. GeorgeThomas says:

I hope they’re not booing Pelf.

  205. NY Cuban says:

Great job Pelf. Even if you get the L, awesome job.

  206. gipper82475 says:

Willie very fortunate this is a day game with all the kids’ groups. A night game with adult beverages would mean he’d get booed off the field again like last night.

Great effort by Pelf. Too bad the offense mailed this one in.

    • metsno1fan says:

I’m booing him from my desk in Manhattan. The kid pitched his heart out, let him try and get Zimmerman and walk off confident, it’s not like the Mets are gonna score anyway.

    • NY Cuban says:

      Ahhh…i see.

  207. zen says:

    fire rick down!

    free chip ambres!

    • GeorgeThomas says:

      Rick Down? Are you serious?

    • toomanyuniforms says:

We can’t hit slop. That’s a problem that’s going to haunt us. It may be that HoJo is in over his head. Sorry.

  208. RetireNumber17 says:

Randolph is an idiot. What is the upside of taking Pelf out here?

  209. NY Cuban says:

    Did they boo Willie today?

  210. npanzeca says:

Come on now, top of the order, lets get a run here!!

  211. twassel says:

He’d thrown 100 pitches. Willie kept it a 1 run game. I’d call that good managing.

  212. Santanaman says:

Interested in what Reyes does here

  213. PacmanJones says:

Ready for the reggaetone 3 pitch strike out?

  214. dr jones says:

I’m sorry but there is something going on behind the scenes.. This team is not playing anywhere remotely close to their potential. How long does this have to go on for? Something is rotten in the big apple and I think its in Willies pants.

  215. atlantasnumberonemetsfan says:

Guys, we couldnt ask for anything more from Big Pelf..he did a stellar job…

  216. NY Cuban says:

Top of the order…lets wake up please!!!

  217. Nightlife says:

Okay, number of pitches it takes Jose to make an out this ab. Over/Under: 3

  218. dykstraw says:

the bright side is every embarrassing loss is one game closer to a competent manager

  219. howellmetsfan says:

Ravi3 get off ur high horse! This team deserves this criticism!! They have been Mediocre at best! We have a right to be angry with the way they have performed! Just because a comment is negitive doesnt make it invalid!

  220. npanzeca says:

Come on Jose, get it started.

  221. jay15 says:

It’s easy to second guess and it’s hard to say whether you can fault Willie because he did the opposite of what he did yesterday (which seems to be what everyone wanted) but the bottom line is he just can’t seem to get it right.

For someone who always “trust his guys” his feel for when to take guys out and leave them in seems to be wronge every single time.

Everybody was saying that they need to win this game desperately. Well then you don’t let Pelfrey bat in the 7th with two strikes. You need to put a hitter up there. Guys like Wise, Joe Smith, and Sanchez are supposed to be able to go 1 inning. Pelfrey is not supposed to go 8 innings. If they were winning it’d be a different story.

  222. Santanaman says:

    I predict the final score Mets5-Nats 1

  223. PacmanJones says:

Can Sean Paul just take the out instead of embarrassing himself looking like Tiger Woods from the rough?

  224. RPsJacket says:

there you go. please steal second.

  225. npanzeca says:

    The ignitor is on!!

  226. mex84 says:

Come on offense, get Pelf off the hook! Cant believe we might lose 3/4 to the Gnats.

  227. RPsJacket says:

    oh my god, no

  228. lewchr says:

    BUNT!!!!!!!!!

  229. howellmetsfan says:

WHAT THE HELL WAS HE THINKING!

  230. NY Cuban says:

here we go…now bunt him over Castillo.

  231. Nightlife says:

    Whoa. Reyes got on!

  232. RPsJacket says:

no, that did not just happen

  233. npanzeca says:

    Another bonehead play, geez

  234. dr jones says:

    Jose Jose JOse Jose jdklfjsdlkfj

  235. PacmanJones says:

Don’t bunt here… we know castillo isn’t very good at getting it down this inning, he’s heating up with the bat, hit and run!

  236. gipper82475 says:

Horrible decision. He scores from 2nd anyway on most any basehit!

    • batsinthepelfrey says:

he doesnt score from second on a sac fly though. hits haven’t exactly been plentiful today

  237. metsno1fan says:

I don’t believe what I just saw (well.. heard).

  238. Koko says:

Reyes use your head bumblehead. . . Sheesh, what did he really expect?

  239. Santanaman says:

    Reyes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  240. NY Cuban says:

    incredible!!!

  241. Nightlife says:

Okay. Now I’m a little mad.

  242. lewchr says:

Can someone explain that to me?

  243. PacmanJones says:

    what happened, my gamecast stopped?

    what the hell just happened?

  246. SPINK3 says:

Somebody thats watching please explain what just happened with that bunt?

    • gipper82475 says:

Castillo laid down a perfect bunt, Jose thought (and I use that term loosely) he should try for third because the catcher wasn’t covering….but Guzman ran over, caught the throw, and tagged Jose out about a mile in front of the bag.

    • gometzies_18 says:

      you dont want to know…

    • backinbusiness says:

Castillo laid down the sac bunt; out at 1st, Reyes to 2nd, then Reyes decided to be cute and try for 3rd and was tagged out.

  247. well that was fast

  248. backinbusiness says:

The upside of pulling Big Pelf is he started giving up hits in a row in a 1 run game and was tiring out.

That was seriously ill-advised on part of Reyes. Down 1 in the bottom 8 is not the time to be cute.

  249. toomanyuniforms says:

I didn’t see it, but if Gameday has it right, Reyes needs a cranial MRI.

  250. PacmanJones says:

Like I said, Castillo can’t get it down.

  251. ToastyJoe says:

I feel like curling up into the fetal position and sobbing at this point.

  252. npanzeca says:

This is why everyone boos and is negative.

  253. stickguy says:

there is a distinction between being aggressive and stupid. Reyes was stupid.

Of course, I think it was stupid to sacrifice anyway. Let Reyes steal, and have 3 shots at getting him in.

Of course, if he stays at 2nd, DW wasn’t getting him in anyway.

Reyes is hopeless now. He needs some serious head work.

Oh, and there are your boos for DW!

  254. lewchr says:

    What a great inning!

  255. gipper82475 says:

Wow, even with the kids day, they were roundly booed after that half-inning. Surprising, if deserved.

  256. Santanaman says:

Oh this just keeps getting better. David Wright, what the hell

  257. npanzeca says:

This is too painful for words.

  258. shamsky says:

If they lose 3 out of 4 to the Nationals at home, they have to make a managerial change…

    There really is no choice….

  259. guierllNO MOta says:

hey hey ho ho….hojo has got to go….we cant lose 1-0 to jason bergmann and have him keep his job….somehow a lot of you will blame Willie here, but he got Pelf to do his thing this whole season has been about lack of hitting….see ya Hojo.

    • PacmanJones says:

The mets are 4th in the NL in runs scored. That’s not the problem, it’s bonehead plays, bonehead teaching by the skipper that led to that last blunder.

      • MetLifer says:

The Mets can be 1st in runs scored and still be in last place. How can that happen? The offense is so mind bongling inconsistant! When the pitching is good, the hitting is dead and vice versa. Someone has to step up and be more consistant besides Church!!

  260. PacmanJones says:

Let me guess, Keith was praising how well the Nationals turned that dobule play? He gets more upset when the visiting team does something stupid than our own team.

  261. howellmetsfan says:

Ok all you MUST ALWAYS BE POSITIVE UR SPOILING METSBLOG WITH UR NEGITIVITY FANS!! TELL ME WHAT WAS POSITIVE ABOUT THAT INNING!! This team is going to be right there with the Marlins all year, that much is certain, too bad it will be fighting for third place 8 games behind the phills and braves all year. PATHETIC, OMAR AND WILLIE MUST GO

    • PacmanJones says:

The Willie lovers are in hiding. LETS HEAR YOUR PESSIMISIM IS BAD PREACHING NOW!!!

      • blains2000 says:

Oh, c’mon give me a break here! Jesus. I’m sure the Mets losing will make you happy because you were “right”. Because that is the most important thing. Making your snarky comments and being right. Not actually rooting for your team.

        • dykstraw says:

lol, no, the mets losing will make me happy because willie is one step closer to the cliff

        • blains2000 says:

Fine and we’ll bring in Art Howe again. And you know what? Heilman will still suck. Delgado is still done. Alou is still old. Pedro and El Duque are still hurt.

I’m not saying he doesn’t face any blame but I don’t see how a new manager is going to fix those things.

        • PacmanJones says:

+1000000000000!!!!! 3 of 4 to the nats and getting swept by the lowly depleted yankees = willie’s head on a silver platter WILPONS!! MAKE IT HAPPEN!

      • batsinthepelfrey says:

if you’re going to jump off the bandwagon then stay off for the whole year…its that simple

    • theperfectgame says:

I’m not watching the game (at work), so I can only follow the action online, but I’ll take a stab at it. Here’s what was positive about that inning:
      1) Reyes got a hit.
      2) Castillo laid down a perfect sacrifice.
      Wasn’t so hard…

  262. MeesesGlokmah says:

This is an injustice to our starting pitchers!

  263. Gasface77 says:

For those who can’t see it. Castillo sacrificed REyes to second. He was out at first. Reyes thought he could make it to third becasue Zimmerman charged the ball. He was tagged out on the throw from Boone to the SS before he got to third base. I think that is what I just saw but I was in disbelief.

  264. RPsJacket says:

he negates the decision to bunt by trying to make 3rd.

  265. Kugaa says:

there is always the bottom of the 9th remain optimistic you win and lose some and it still aint september

  266. Santanaman says:

Well, here’s the good news. This is Willie’s a**

  267. wallybackman'sfire says:

Mets are 5 for 29 with RISP in this series…….

  268. metsno1fan says:

Castillo bunt to 3B, Zimmerman came in to field and throw to 1st and was not covering 3rd. Reyes sees that and rounds 2nd, Guzman, the SS, chases Reyes to the bag, grabs the throw from first and tags him in his back just before he got to the base.

And apparently Reyes didnt hustle to 2nd and while rounding it before turning on the jets.

  269. NY Cuban says:

This team is playing like cellar dwellers, not a powerhouse. Pelf gives us a huge game and this happens. I’m at work, but I can GUARANTEE that Reyes won’t pay attention to a word Willie tells him.

  270. Bruce Boisclair says:

Well, I’ll write this before all of the “sky is falling” posts come after the game…

I’m no “Fire Willie” guy, but they are starting to drift into the territory of having change for change’s sake. This team should have come out of the gate with fire in it’s collective belly. It has not. Something needs to be done, and I think it may fall on Willie. Now, I don’t know if it is the right thing to do to get rid of the Jacket and the rest of the staff, but I think we might need a spark plug type of guy to push this team. I don’t know if something like this can happen, but could we steal Tony Pena from the Yankees?

    • RPsJacket says:

well, when willie gets fired that will be the reason. only the most ardent willie-bashers think things will actually improve considerably. I’m not sure it will matter.

    • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

Lee Mazilli, Frank Robinson, heck even Larry Bowa would do just fine. Bowa would break golf clubs off over people’s kneecaps in that clubhouse.

  271. Runshouse says:

Reyes doesn’t try that if Willie was even close to a big league manager.

    • gometzies_18 says:

Yeah I think you are completey wrong about that – I love how those who want Willie gone find a way to blame Willie for EVERYTHING.

Has anyone noticed this terrible economy lately? I mean, it’s got to be because Willie is stll managing the Mets.

I’m not crazy about Willie right now either, but blaming everything on him really reflects your intelligence as a fan…

  272. guierllNO MOta says:

how is it Willie’s fault that Reyes and Wright have sucked donkey balls all year long….the two of them need to sit and get it together as 23 other guys and a whole coaching staff are about to pay the price

    • Biscuit says:

It is not Willie’s fault that they are not hitting….

But Willie is an awful in-game manager. That is why he needs to go.

      • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

Willie needs to go regardless. This team needs a change, and that’s when you can the manager. Right or wrong, it’s just what you do.

    • Santanaman says:

      donkey balls, that’s a riot!!

  273. GenerationQue says:

I’ll give the Mets this much. They are very creative. Never the same way to lose twice. Similar but subtle differences.

  274. NY Cuban says:

Sunshiners, we need you…there is a line on the Triboro waiting to jump…

  275. gometzies_18 says:

You can’t blame this game on Willie, Omar, HoJo, Keith Ron or Gary….

I don’t know how you possibly justify trying to take third there in a 1-0 game in the 8th. If the Mets loose today, I say this one is mostly on Reyes

    • gipper82475 says:

Isn’t it part of Willie’s job to teach the kid the fundamentals and how to play smart baseball? isn’t also part of his job to motivate his guys to play better than have a losing seven game homestand against two last-place dregs of the NL type teams?

That said, definitely a lot of blame on Jose, the offense in general, etc.

  276. metsfanmurph says:

Why is Castillo bunting there??? You have Jose Reyes the best base stealer in baseball on first and you are bunting him over. It is a waste of an out.

It also makes no sense to have Wise pitching here in the 9th when you have your closer available.

We are about to lose 3 out of 4 to the Nationals, Willie has to go.

    • Biscuit says:

Agreed. I have never liked bunting with Reyes on 1st. To me, it is a waste.

    • GenerationQue says:

I don’t have a problem with the bunt, per se. Would I rather see a hit and run with one of the fastest guys in the league and a slap hitter? Seems to make sense. But hey baseball IQ is overrated right?

      • dykstraw says:

baseball IQ nothing. the percentage play is to swing away, steal or no steal.

giving away outs is almost always stupid.

  277. atlantasnumberonemetsfan says:

    Alright guys…I give up……Fire Willie…We have no choice…

  278. gipper82475 says:

    Heilman warming.

  279. Hemenway says:

sad sad sad sad sad sad sad sad sad sad sad sad sad.
    a pathetic showing.
    what’s the payroll?
    this is weak.

  280. jay15 says:

How did Boone just advance to third on a line drive to the pitcher. Please tell me my gamecast is wrong.

  281. guierllNO MOta says:

murph, yeah id let reyes steal too however castillo did his job and got reyes to second and reyes ran them out of the inning…in a 1-0 game you MAKE SURE you get to second not chance it at stealing, and he did and Willie actualyl made the right call and reyes f’d it up

however…if i were coach i woulda tried to let him steal first, but thats why i’m on a couch and hes a manager.

  282. Ludacrispat says:

This is sad. I thought they’d come out today and pound the Nats, take a 9-2 win and at least go 4-3 on the homestand.

Not everything is Willie’s fault, but the fact of the matter is that he has made so many awful decisions he has not merited keeping his job whatsoever.

I don’t know anymore. I am beyond depressed.

All I can hope for is a 9th inning comeback. Beltran is leading it off. Something???

  283. mex84 says:

Why am I not suprised by this game?

  284. fortleemets says:

    Why do I feel like it’s September 26, 2007?

  285. backinbusiness says:

Is “Jesus Flores” batting a few places in this lineup, or is he actually just fortuitously coming up in every damn big spot.

  286. gomets6091 says:

wait, how does Boone get to 3rd on a line out to the pitcher? Was this another boneheaded play? I hate Gamecast right now…

    • gipper82475 says:

Ball hit Wise in the leg and it bounced away…was a nice recovery by Wise just to get the batter at first.

      • gomets6091 says:

ah ok, thanks. Normally I’d be watching this on MLB.tv, but I’m blacked out for the Nats games. Figures they’d play a day game during the week for the one team I can actually watch them play on TV if I weren’t at work.

    • backinbusiness says:

no-hit wise in the leg. looked like it hurt, too.

  287. NY Cuban says:

Well, we wanted 5-2; looks like we got 3-4…against the Reds and Nats. Can’t wait to play the Yankees and Braves.

    • casey s. says:

yeah, can’t find anything good to say about 3-4. pathetic.

    • stickguy says:

Well, it seems that they have done better against good teams than bottom feeders. Another sign of an underachieving team, they tend to play down to the competition. Or is that a sign of overconfidence?

Come on CHurch. Game winning HR right here!

  288. Ludacrispat says:

    And P.S. to all the die-hard Minaya-defenders:

    Jesus Flores says hello.

  289. GenerationQue says:

Okay guys I figured it out. We need to start betting against the Mets. It’s pretty apparent we know this teams tendencies inside and out. Whether it be mailing it in on getaway days or making below average pitchers look like Cy Young contenders. If we bet big enough and make enough money on this we can pool our money and buy the Mets. One team and one million GMs. We can have Pete Rose be our consultant.

  290. throatneedle says:

it’s time to FIRE WILLIE RANDOLPH!!

it’s embarrasing and an f-ing travesty that we’re losing 3 out of 4 to THE FREAKING NATIONALS!

it’s not just that but his neverending loyalty to Heilman and Sosa that have f-d up at least 4 games for us so far this year.

Why get rid of Mota when you also have Heilman and Sosa?

  291. mex84 says:

Finally, the curse of Flores does not come true!

  292. SPINK3 says:

Wise does his job in a big spot. At least I know my order was right putting heilman last in confidence

  293. howellmetsfan says:

Nice job Wise. Now Score a damn run at least, Show some damn Character!!

  294. BigHangWithEm says:

Beltran & Church back-to-back for the win??

    • toomanyuniforms says:

Let’s hope. This team really needs to at least battle this AB. They can’t hang a loss on Pelf without a fight.

  295. NY Cuban says:

Ryan Church will come up huge here…

  296. big shea says:

Is there any doubt that Delgado strikes out to end this game?

  297. mex84 says:

Funny, 1/4 of the way through the season and no managerial firings yet.

  298. Runshouse says:

Even if the Mets pull it off Willie and every coach needs to go.

  299. backinbusiness says:

Beltran! Come on, LETS GO METS!

  300. metsfanmurph says:

I have no problem at all having Castillo hit and run there. Bunting him with Reyes on is such a waste. Bobby Cox would never bunt with Otis Nixon or Rafael Furcal on first.

I have no problem with Reyes trying to make something happen but I do have a problem with him not running hard to second. I have a HUGE problem with Castillo costing us a run on the ball Kearns dropped. I would have pulled him after the third out was made.

This team lacks focus (managers responsibility)
This team lacks fire (managers responsibility)
This team lacke urgency (managers responsibility)

    • PacmanJones says:

Metsblog.com motto should be changed to:

This team lacks focus (managers responsibility)
This team lacks fire (managers responsibility)
This team lacke urgency (managers responsibility)

Most appropriate post of the day, possibly year.

    • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

It’s a marathon, not a sprint. Willie doesn’t believe in urgency, focus. If you lose, just come back and get em tomorrow, that’s all. No big deal. It’s a long season.

  306. PacmanJones says:

Why isn’t Alou pinch hitting for Delgado? Willie must go +100000

    • Ollie Ollie Oxen Free says:

Alou shouldn’t have pinch hit for Delgado. I agree that Castro was the guy he should pinch hit for.

  307. backinbusiness says:

That was a simply incredible play. And it wasn’t even Endy out there.

  308. backinbusiness says:

    COME ON DELGADO SAC FLY!!!!!!!!!

did he just get doubled off???? how the f does that happen!

      • Ollie Ollie Oxen Free says:

It’s impossible, except in this virtual world we live in here as Mets fans. Never throw a no-hitter and never get a clutch hit. We used it all on Buckner.

You can bet your last dollar that Heilman will be traded in the off season and throw a perfect game in his first start for Kansas City. Don’t worry though, we’ll at least get to laugh at the 2-headed monster at 2nd base of Mark Grudzielanek and Luis Castillo. Can’t wait.

Nice Beltran. Now CD, get the damn ball in play.

  313. PacmanJones says:

SAC FLY? Dude. It’s delgado, sac strikeout passed ball hopefully?

    • Ollie Ollie Oxen Free says:

Way to be optimistic. Save the optimism for July. Training camp is around the corner buddy.

  314. backinbusiness says:

Alou pinch hitting for the catcher, eh?

  315. howellmetsfan says:

I swear i thought that Beltran wasnt gonna go to third and i thought that was strike 3. If he doesnt get at least a fly ball hes goin to be booed off the field

  316. METS08WSCHAMPS says:

    BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry.

    Nah, I know…cry.

  319. metsforever says:

You can only laugh. I predicted GIDP

    • backinbusiness says:

Yeah, I’m sure you predicted juuuuust that sort of DP. come on man.

      • metsforever says:

Check the threads. GIDP. It’s in there.

I didn’t predict a first to third bizarre DP. Maybe I should have with the ways this team loses games.

        • Ollie Ollie Oxen Free says:

Not only are we bad, but we’re pretty unlucky too.

Game 3 in Philly. Beltran rips the ball with 2 out to shortstop. Eric F’n Bruntlett, who couldn’t field a ground ball all season made a ridiculous play. Stuff like that is the diff between one game over and 8 games. Well, that and an anemic offense and bad bullpen.

    • SoDakMets says:

Actually your prediction of GIDP is incorrect. He did not “Ground into a Double Play.”

      Nice try though.

  320. ravi3 says:

    WOW.

  321. toomanyuniforms says:

    Oh my.

  322. backinbusiness says:

    Well, that just plain sucks.

  323. koosman says:

another bang up job from your 2008 New York Mets!

  324. PacmanJones says:

    holy crap. Well, willie’s gone.

  325. gomets6091 says:

wow….all I wanted was for him not to strike out. I take it back…

  326. MeesesGlokmah says:

    Pathetic

    • Hernandez_1B says:

Bang up job on this home stand. How can Pelfrey gain any confidence when he throws the game of his life and the offense just rolls over and dies for him. PATHETIC. Im boycotting the yankees series this weekend. No need to watch. Can we trade for Willie Harris?? We could use a few players like him

  327. RPsJacket says:

    well, he didn’t strike out.

  328. PacmanJones says:

    PUUUUUUUUUUKE

  329. dr jones says:

and it only get worse…. I’ll say it again

There is something rotten in the big apple and I think its in Willies pants…

  330. Mingo says:

I gotta think this is it for Willie.

    • npanzeca says:

This will be a good test to see just how badly the Wilpons want to win

    • koosman says:

come on now. Every once in a while you will have one, or ten or eighty game like this. It will just make the champagne a little sweeter in the end, or something.

  331. ToastyJoe says:

    Speechless. Utterly and completely speechless.

  332. PacmanJones says:

Cmon it’s Delgado, he’ll find a way to hit into a double play anytime it’s feasible.

  333. BBmetsfreak36 says:

If u described a normal tough loss….it wouldnt compare to this.

  334. stickguy says:

this team is hopeless. Do they have any clue how to play baseball?

Those 2 DPs were discusting. And yes, Blame Willie if the team is clueless, and not playing smart baseball.

    And dang, Church was robbed.

Get it over with and fire Willie.

Not that they will now, but if the 7 games with NYY and the Braves goes bad, he is as good as gone.

    • gomets6091 says:

Maybe we’re seeing some parallels with ‘99 here….they went into the Yankees series scuffling, lost the first 2 games and were 27-28, then they fired most of Bobby V’s staff and rolled off a 21-8 streak.

By the way, Im looking at their schedule: that has to be the best team ever to have multiple 7-game losing streaks in a single season.

      • metsno1fan says:

key word there : Bobby V

do you honestly expect a fraction of the intensity Valentine showed that year??? He had those teams playing way beyond their capabilities.

        • gomets6091 says:

I should have clarified: maybe this is the point where we fire Willie (b/c they already did the staff shakeup last year) and then the team takes off. Maybe with Bobby V. back as manager pretty please?

  335. plasto says:

    Speechless.

  336. atlantasnumberonemetsfan says:

I’m done with this for today..just making it worse talking to you guys

  337. Gasface77 says:

Guess I’ll tune into the Rays/Yankees game and watch Kazmir so I will really want to slit my wrists.

  338. Bruce Boisclair says:

What happened on that last play?

    • stickguy says:

low liner to 1B, Beltran broke, and got doubled off.

    • Gasface77 says:

Delgado hit a scorching line drive to Boone at first. Beltran got doubled off of third. Just bad luck.

Something needs to happen at this point.

I’ve defended Willie and the coaching staff for the past year, but it’s not working. I don’t care who’s fault it is, people need to lose their jobs and we need to shake things up and try to find what we lost at the end of May 2007.

It’s almost been a full year of .500 baseball, and it’s gone on for far too long.

  345. metsfanmurph says:

    I really hate this team

Willie has to be fired today. My candidates would be Julio Franco, Lenny Harris, and Lee Mazzilli.

    • blains2000 says:

      Candidates for what? The circus?

    • statnut says:

If Randolph goes, HoJo needs to go too. This team can not hit consistently, and I feel like it started when he took over. Say what you want about him, but the Mets should bring in Gary Carter in some capacity, because at least he has heart. Maybe the Mets will pick something up from him.

      • chew13 says:

I like HoJo but I agree. He has to take the hit for the offense.

        • hyperion4 says:

Yeah. I really wish he hadn’t screwed up Ryan Church so badly.

        • Ollie Ollie Oxen Free says:

hyperion, i agree with you and all about ryan church. he has been fantastic. however, this team will win more games with reyes and wright playing up to their capabilities than it will with church playing as he is.

if you need evidence, see 2006 vs. so far in 2008.

  346. almar1965 says:

Lets see what the Willie/Mets apologists have to say now. Losing 3 of 4 to the Nats at home? I think I just threw up in my mouth.

This team right now is PATHETIC.

    • Ollie Ollie Oxen Free says:

Why? Losing 3 of 4 to the Nats is just like the final month of last season. We are used to it.

  347. SPINK3 says:

Willies only problem is that he keeps putting in Heilman and Delgado to play. Neither of those guys will ever make a big play to help this team win. There both garbage time players and play like it

  348. Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

Well, if Santana really wants to earn his money, go out tomorrow night and pitch a complete game 13 strikeout gem and throw one under Jeter’s chin in the process.

    • Gasface77 says:

The only reason I am even watching the game tomorrow night is because Santana is pitching. I am disgusted right now. Pelfrey stepped up big time today and they could not even score one run.

      • Ollie Ollie Oxen Free says:

I’m going to the game. Don’t know whether I should wear my 86 throwback Reyes or 86 throwback Wright jersey. I think I’ll cut my losses and wear my Shockey blue.

    • PacmanJones says:

How exactly would that win the game? It would require scoring a run off of a pitcher with a 9ERA without being fanned 10 times! PUUUUUKE! JUMP OFF A BRIDGE WILLIE!!!

  349. edwin nieves says:

Willie had nothing to do with this loss. It was the bats. Or the lack thereof.

    • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

Obviously, but that’s not the point. You can’t fire the players. But you can fire the manager to give a wake up call to the players. This team needs a shakeup, and the manager goes. Right or wrong, that’s just how it works in major league baseball.

    • Mingo says:

How many different ways can a team find to lose a game. One day its the bats, the next the bullpen, the next simply playing flat. It doesn’t matter at this point how they lose games, it only matters that it is way too common. Even bad teams find the same ways to lose games we do.

  350. uhhhman says:

what about gary, keith, and ron as managers and game commentary/play-by-play all at once!?!?!

  351. almar1965 says:

The clock is ticking on Willie right now, whether we think it is fair or not. it is just a matter of “when” not “if” at this point.

Any bets on the over/under with Willie?

    I say June 15.

    • chew13 says:

I agree with the other poster’s comment. If we dont produce a winning record over the next two series than I think he will be canned. I expect the beat writers to start calling for his head soon. Once Shea starts reguarly booing Willie like they did last night he will be gone. The wilpons won’t tolerate it.

      • PacmanJones says:

THE WILPONS ARE LITTLE GIRLS MAN, THEYRE SCARED TO MAKE THE MOVE OTHERWISE IT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED AFTER THE COLLAPSE, WHY WASNT WILLIE ACCOUNTABLE? WHY IS WILLIE THE COACH WHEN THIS TEAM HAS PLAYED .500 BASEBALL FOR THE LAST 150 GAMES!!! WILLIE IS A GOAT AND A THUG!

  352. mrose says:

i’m not gonna say this loss is on Willie…how can it be? we didn’t hit, we pitched GREAT, but I’m for willie firing just to shake up this clubhouse..something…is there a pulse in therE??

Stop with calling us “willie/mets” apologists..were fans just like you
almar1965, that is the stuff that is making metsblog comments section terrible, that you have to have “name calling” no matter what. How bout this? we are all fans, some deal with things one way, others another…..just state your own opinion and thats it

    • batsinthepelfrey says:

      agree 100%

    • almar1965 says:

I used to be one who constantly apologized for Willie. Defended him to death out of fairness, even though I wanted Oberkfell as manager originally. But that ship has sailed.

If you are offended by an honest, non-aggressive term like “Willie Apologist”, well then there is nothing I can say to make it better since you seem to get easily offended over something that is no where near the real name-calling that occurs on this blog.

Being called an apologist doesn’t make you any less of a fan. It refers to your opinion, not the person themselves.

      • hyperion4 says:

The problem is that some people use “Willie apologist” to describe anybody who doesn’t think Randolph is the biggest problem with the team. Like the opposite of whining and screaming is being an “apologist.”

        • almar1965 says:

Well I can’t speak for how others define that term, but when I say it, it is more for people who see no wrong with Willie, not those who don’t see Willie as the biggest problem since I can list many more bigger problems than Willie right now (although only a few more).

          : )

        • mrose says:

hyperion4 got it right…its thrown around every other second
I’m not offended easily, i’m annoyed how much this term is thrown around just for not saying “fire willie” in every post. I wouldn’t be surprised if the email signatures of some of these fans is “fire willie”
          Its tired

        • almar1965 says:

I don’t go around spouting “Fire Willie” like some, but I can see the writing on the wall starting to forumulate, and something will be donje unless this situation turns aorund soon. And by “turning around,” that doesn’t mean taking two steps forward and then two steps back again like the past several days.

A lot is on the line after last season, and I think Willie knows this,…or at least I hope he knows this.

  353. chew13 says:

FIRE WILLIE! I’m soooo sick of his rationale and excuses. Can him now and let’s salvage our season. He has become intolerable.

    • blains2000 says:

You can fire him now but the odds of that salvaging the season are slim at best. The Jack McKeon stories are few.

      • dykstraw says:

mariners went on a great run last year after a managerial change mid season, almost made the WC out of nowhere

houston made the NLCS or WS (forgot which year) after garner took the reins

besides, you can’t let the manager off the hook for player performance all season and then claim a manager change is gonna hurt the team

      • hbean says:

lol, were only a couple of games out. Season is absolutely salvageable. The key is to make the move sooner rather than later. Right now the season can be saved. In another month it might be to late.

Fire Willy now. I like the guy, I really do. Hes dont a lot for this team. He had a couple good years managing the team, but whatever has happened since the collapse, it should be obvious now that he does not have the facilities/capacity to fix it.

        Time for a change.

        • blains2000 says:

Yeah salvage was the wrong word. But I don’t think change for change sake does much in the long term. I think there is a short term boost but the problems are the problems.

The PLAYERS have to do it IMO.

  354. MetsKnicksRutgers says:

PLain and simply… this isnt all willie’s fault, but this team is not responding to him anymore. Even if it were not his fault whatsoever, these guys know he is gone lame duck as can be. Why play for him when he is gonna get fired? This is change for change sake. He has got to go. I say lets just start selling. Rebuild with santana maine and… umm. can we keep wright and reyes in there? I sure hope so… other than that if we can get value back… i mean value as in freaking young guys that even have a remote chance at being starters in the majors…. i say firesale

    • almar1965 says:

“Plain and simply… this isnt all willie’s fault, but this team is not responding to him anymore”

      EXACTLY.

We can go back and forth about Willie’s lack of managerial acumen on the field, or about his moves, or his stubborness..

What it comes down to at this point is whether he has “lost” this team, much like how Valentine supposedly lost his team.

At that point, if this starts to become apparent, does ownership sit down and seriously deliberate whether a managerial execution is the right thing to do at the right time?

I think so. I don’t think the Wilpons are going to risk alienating the fans with Willie at the helm going to a new ballpark in 2009 if they fail to make the post-season this year and play mediocre baseball, regardless of whom is truly at fault.

    • hyperion4 says:

The strange thing about this idea is that even if the Mets play this uninspiring, mediocre baseball for the entire season, they’re likely to be in the playoff hunt regardless. There are not many really good teams in the NL, let alone the NL East.

  357. General Millz says:

Well, I’ve never been part of the fire Willie crowd until today.

Get him out, bring Bobby V in, and trade Heilman to anyone who needs a starter for a prospect or two to replenish some of what we lost on the farm by getting Santana – a move I completely agreed with but created a bit of a hole in the minors.

Either that, or maybe we can get Colbert to put the Mets on notice?

    • gomets019 says:

I love the support for bobby V, but he is under contract to the seibu lions of Japan. We’d have as much luck getting him to replace Willie as Tony Larussa or Terry Francona. Bobby V is not available.

  358. dr jones says:

WE JUST WENT 3-4 AGAINST THE WORST TEAMS IN BASEBALL

    • gipper82475 says:

      Is anyone all THAT surprised?

      • Danny1986 says:

As frustrated and negative that I’ve been this year, I will say I am ABSOLUTELY surprised by this 3-4 homestand. A record of 4-3 is what I expected, that’s what .500 teams do.

A record of 5-2 is what I feel Willie needed to save his job.

But 3-4 is just horrible, especially losing 3 of the last 4 to the Nats. If we can’t figure out how to beat the Nats, than what does that say about us?

I’m so exhausted with this team right now, I cannot compile any other thoughts. They wouldn’t be original anyway.

        • gipper82475 says:

I voted 5-2 in Matt’s poll as well. However, I assumed it would be 4-3 with an outside chance of 3-4. It is sad, really, but true.

        • Danny1986 says:

remember Matt’s infamous “What do you want” thread? I stated this:

These guys are men. They are professionals. And they need to find it themselves. If not, then the manager has got to kick them in the ass and help them find it. IF he fails, then find someone who will kick them in the ass. NOT ONE of our everyday players is afraid for his job. SO:

          - Give Willie the next 11 games (starting today with game 3 dodgers and ending with the Yankee series) to get this team playing sound, smart, no-holds-barred baseball.
          - Anything less than 6 wins equates to Willie being fired (that means they would be exactly at .500).

GIPPER…If my theory from 2 weeks ago holds true, Randolph will be fired after the Yankee Series b/c he will need to sweep them in order to get those 6 wins. But here is the frustrating part…..if they win 2 of 3 this weekend, his job is likely safe despite playing under .500 since returning from the West coast and playing much worse baseball that they were 2 weeks ago.

And that is the frustrating part of a .500 team. You can’t pull the trigger b/c there is still breathing going on.

        • Danny1986 says:

correction….winning 2of 3 from the Yankees WILL get those 6 wins.

          which is even more frustrating.

But I think iif they win 1 game this weekend, and dip below .500, Willie is canned before the ATL series on Tuesday.

If not, than that cat has 9 phuking lives.

        • gipper82475 says:

We’ll see, man. Let’s hope he’s gone sooner than latr so it isn’t too late to right the ship.

    • blains2000 says:

And no one has lost a series to them this year. Oh except, Philly, Atlanta, Chicago, Pittsburgh.

      • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

But were those all 4 game series? Losing 3 of 4 is worse than 2 of 3.

      • Danny1986 says:

so you are OK with being JUST LIKE everyone else? Yep, that’s winning baseball.

        You’re a C student, aren’t you?

        • blains2000 says:

Yeah, I’m giving up on the season and burning all my Mets gear because they lost 3 of 4 to the Nats.

          Where’s that confounded bridge?

  359. Runshouse says:

Willie has everything to do with this loss…

If Castillo busts on that dropped fly they are still playing… but no he plays just like Willie manages.

    • ryno says:

I bet both Castillo AND Wright would’ve been busting it if Bobby V was in the dugout. Willie is their “buddy”, but we’ve seen just how much he is motivating his “buddies”.

    • hyperion4 says:

Are you, whatever your job in your own life, unable to give a good professional effort unless you have a boss or “manager” who tells you to? Do you think your boss should be fired if you can’t summon the effort to do a good job?

I agree that Willie doesn’t seem to be motivating anybody, but players are the ones who should ultimately be accountable for their own laziness. Allocating responsibility for that to the manager is just manufacturing reasons for something people want anyway, firing Randolph.

  360. metsforever says:

As has been said many times, you can’t fire 25 players. I was hoping the DFAs earlier this week might light a fire, but apparently not. Managers and coaches get fired unfairly all the time. It is almost always the players’ fault, but somebody has to be held responsible. I think if Omar doesn’t throw Willie under the bus, Fred and Jeff will throw them both under. Sorry Willie, but it’s time.

    • hyperion4 says:

I’m starting to come around to this point of view. I honestly don’t think that Willie is half as bad as many here seem to beleive, but firing him may be necessary to jump-start this underachieving team.

A lot depends on who would replace him, though. “Anybody but Willie” isn’t going to cut it. In particular, any replacement has to know how to get the most out of Reyes.

  361. professor met says:

    I’m truly embarrassed.

  362. edwin nieves says:

I’m with you MROSE in the end its only a game. Gratefull during the good times and gracefull during the bad.

    • mrose says:

      thank you
I mean, I know the Mets have been playing terrible for a year now, but jesus, this comments section used to be fun
this team used to be fun
and for me…i don’t know about other people, even when the team used to have troublesome games, it was still somewhat fun in here
I feel now that even with an improved team and a 10 game winning streak, this comments section would still be a downer

      • Danny1986 says:

the sentiment of the comments section is in direct correlation to level of play of the team the comments are about.

      • batsinthepelfrey says:

some people aren’t going to be happy unless they’re miserable. i can be critical and do think willie is on the chopping block barring a nice little run but some of these people posting comments are ridiculous (I’m talking to you almar, pacman and many more). You’re down on everything before it even plays out. Delgado’s hit gets into RF there you are singing a different tune. You’re entitled to your opinions. it just so happens that your opinion brings nothing to the table and takes away from the comments section. Whether you like or not there is a lot of season to play and alot of talent on the team. If its so miserable then jump off the bandwagon and stay off.

        • almar1965 says:

“some people aren’t going to be happy unless they’re miserable. i can be critical and do think willie is on the chopping block barring a nice little run but some of these people posting comments are ridiculous (I’m talking to you almar, pacman and many more). ”

Whoa! Before you start throwing my name around, make sure you get your facts and argument straight there. I am not “down on everything” as you state. I have posted positive, supportive comments on here many times, and as I said in my previous post, I have defended Willie many times.

And to say that certain opinions bring nothing to the table is a very narrow-minded and shallow argument, as as bad as the extreme negative comments posted here. I can only speak for myself, but my opinions are not aggressive or harsh or brash, unless the thickness of skins here overcome anyone’s abilities to debate in a open forum.

So before you throw my name around with those whom you perceive as “dregs” on this blog, stop, take a deep breath and then think again before you write.

  363. guierllNO MOta says:

i’m a pro-willie guy and numerous times this year I have questioned his tactics and was even turnign the corner to the fire-willie crowd after last nights Heilman led loss (ie Willie using “my guys”)

However, how can willie be blamed for today? this goes on batters 1-8 with the exclamation on Reyes….pathetic job on professional hitters not hitting bergmann….end of story what lineup is willie supposed to put out there to hit a AAA pitcher? would you have rather seen Anderson Hernandez?

    • Runshouse says:

Because he consistantly manages his team to play up or down to their competition.

    • Ryn05 says:

It’s not really blaming Willie for not hitting, it’s blaming him for failing to get this team out of a 6 month funk of playing .500 baseball.

    • gipper82475 says:

Agreed, the offense deserves lots of blame today, but:

1.) Isn’t it Willie’s job to (effectively) teach running out popups like the one that Castillo and Wright dogged – costing the Mets a run and causing Ed Kranepool to lament the lack of managerial leadership?

2.) Isn’t it Willie’s job to teach Jose the fundamentals and smart baseball so he doesn’t make that boneheaded play of trying for third on the sac bunt?

3.) You cannot fire your entire starting lineup.

      • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

Can you tell us what Kranepool said exactly? A lot of us are not in front of a TV right now.

    • backinbusiness says:

Agreed. Actually, I’m impressed with how Willie managed this game. He kept Pelfrey in as he should, while everyone in here mocked “There’s Heilman” for about 100 comments. He left Pelfrey go into the 8th. He pulled him when he started falling apart and tiring out, and put in the correct, non-Heilman reliever to end the inning.

He called the sac bunt in the bottom 8, which while some people seem to hate the sac bunt, is a completely appropriate call there. It was executed perfectly, until Reyes decided to get cute.

Earlier, Castillo and Wright didn’t hustle, so I guess they should have been benched for Easley and Tatis?

Bottom 9, he had Alou on deck to hit for Castro, in spite of the comments people hadn’t yet posted but were sure to…”HE WILL NEVER BAT FOR THE PITCHER!”.

There was a sick, sick catch on Church’s hit and a totally flukely DP on a hard hit ball from Delgado.

Wille makes a lot of boneheaded decisions, and maybe “he’s lost the team” — I wouldn’t claim to know — but he didn’t do anything wrong today.

This loss goes to Castillo, Wright, and Reyes.

      • dykstraw says:

willie didn’t call for the obvious bunt in the 9th by delgado

        • backinbusiness says:

if it was so obvious, maybe delgado should have done it on his own again like yesterday.

with 1 out and needing a run to score rather than simply advance, i think i would go with getting the ball into the air, rather than down. your idea may also have worked, but a sac fly is not ridiculous in that situation.

        • batsinthepelfrey says:

that is not an obvious bunt situation at all. and delgado is not castillo when it comes to bunting.

        • hyperion4 says:

If you think that was an “obvious bunt” situation for Delgado, I respectfully suggest that you don’t know baseball.

Delgado is as likely to miss or foul off a bunt attempt as succeed. Why put him in a hole against a quality closer. As it is, he hit the ball very hard, and only a combination of bad luck and (understandable, in my view*) overaggressive baserunning kept the Mets from tying the game.

*I can’t fault Beltran too much for the baserunning play because Delgado’s hit looked like it could have been a one-hopper. If it’s a one-hopper, Beltran can only score with a good jump off third. If he fails to score on a one-hopper with one out and the Mets lose, he would have been booed off the field. He probably should have been more cautious, but I can’t really fault him for what he did. On the whole, he’s an excellent baserunner.

      • gipper82475 says:

        Backinbusiness,

You are correct, Willie did fine with the pitching moves today. It’s shocking, but it happens!

Agreed, Jose, DWright and castillo deserve much blame, and i am ticked at them all,…..but:

–You say “Earlier, Castillo and Wright didn’t hustle, so I guess they should have been benched for Easley and Tatis?”

I say, possibly. Why is it appropriate for Jose last year but not Castillo and DWright this year? More importantly, even if they do not get benched, isn’t it Willie’s J-O-B to teach his players to run out all popflys in the first place?

For that matter isn’t it his job to teach Jose to play smart fundamental baseball and not “get cute” by going for third on that sac?

I honestly ask these questions because I honestly do not understand how you gloss over them in your analysis.

        • backinbusiness says:

Well, I’m not sure pulling guys for not running out balls is the best way to get through to them, since it hurts the team in the process. Just because Willie did it last year to Jose, it can’t have been wrong then or now? He has to bench every single guy forevermore because he did it to Jose in a different season?

I don’t think players should need to be “taught” to run out ground balls and pop ups. We run them out in my slow pitch softball league, for crying out loud. Neither should Jose need to be taught not to go 1st to 3rd on a routine sac bunt.

Maybe Willie has “lost the players.” Maybe Jose was trying to be too helpful. There is very little in-game that Willie could have done to stop those errors today.

        • gipper82475 says:

I agree players shouldn’t need to be taught the fundamentals. However, isn’t it apparent that they need to be so taught. Whether it is something we think they should have learned when they were 8 year old is besided the point if they aren’t doing it.

Sadly, I think your attitude is Willie’s. “Players know these things, just like I knew them. Therefore they don’t need to be taught/coached the fundamentals.” If they exhibit vidence of not knowing such things, you have to change that attitude and actually coach them.

Yes, in-game wise, there is little Willie could have done. But doesn’t his job include off-field instruction, coaching, etc?

Maybe we’ll just have to agree to disagree. I certainly blame the players today, but that doesn’t excuse the manager.

    • k-mets says:

I totally agree. Yesterday is Willie’s fault. He should have put Heilman out there at all. But today it is the fault of the players.

I am also a Willie supporter, but starting to lose patience. He claims have help Manning turn things around. Why cannot he do the same for his team. And Reyes, what was he thinking running to third in the 8th.

I wonder how long Willie will last?

  364. cbkolb says:

    It’s his fault they’re losing isn’t it?

    Oh, wait…we already blamed him.

    • gipper82475 says:

Exactly. So, it’s time to fire the guy above hitting coach in the pecking order.

      • jose--jose-jose-jose says:

…some people never learn. I’m not going to post my Rick Down rant, and talk about how the culeless fans drove him out of here, without any knowledge how how much he meant to Reyes, but the point is, randomly firing guys in the middle of the season DOES NOT WORK! And in most cases, it does more harm to the team than good (see: Rick Down.)

You know not what you speak.. get a clue brah..

    • june14th1980 says:

      Who’s Art Howe?

    • ToastyJoe says:

Preposterous. Players may have hated Bobby V personally, but he was a tremendous manager who got the most out of a so-so roster. In other words, he was the opposite of Willie in all respects.

    • almar1965 says:

“Bobby V was a horrible manager and cost us 5 of the 6 years he was here with his nonsensical moves,”

Horrible manager? I am not going to sit here and say BV was the greatest manager ever, but to say he was horrible is crazy.

Lets just put it this way, he did more with less than Willie has.

    • Danny1986 says:

ok. i get it . you are just saying things to get a reaction.

ha ha ha. cool. great job.

  369. NYsMaineMan says:

The Mets NEED to fire Willie Randolph, today.

The team has stopped playing for him. He is a constant reminder of the 2007 collapse, and a new voice is needed. Not to mention someone we need someone with a baseball IQ better than a mouse.

    • PacmanJones says:

Totally agreed. A mouse could make a double switch as effective as Willie, point is a mouse wouldn’t be able to make one either, so Willie = A mouse. Remember the ump that had to “teach” willie how to properly make a double switch in game?

      • NYsMaineMan says:

how could I forget? I have it saved in my memory bank everytime a “homer” tries to argue that the guy is a decent manager.

    • napes22 says:

So every game we lose is a constant reminder of 2007? The Mets looked flat some games in 2006 also. 2008 has NOTHING to do with 2007.

Stop whining about 2007 – it’s over. It happened, it sucked, but it’s over. Move on. If the Mets play poorly and uninspired this year, it is not a continuation from last years collapse; it is this year’s inability to get motivated. Maybe it’s a reflection on Willie’s ability to motivate the team, but it has nothing to do with last year.

I don’t get it, do Yankee fans bring up 2004 every time their team loses? Do Cubs fan bring up their collapse in the playoffs every year? I mean we still have people mad at Beltran for his at bat in the playoffs. Turn off the backwards tunnell vision.

  370. NYsMaineMan says:

The teams never ever stopped playing for Bobby V.

    The 200 NL Champs:

    Timo Perez
    Benny Agbayani
    Jay Payton
    Todd Zeile
    Robin Ventura (hitting .230)
    Mike Piazza
    Mike Bordick
    Kurt Abbott
    Al Leiter
    Mike Hampton
    Armando Benitez
    the list goes on…

That guy was a darn good manager.

  371. DC Mets Fan says:

Why hasn’t anyone mentioned Beltran breaking for home?
If the ball goes through he scores easily, why not stay put?

It’s easy for me to say though, I didn’t see it.

    • PacmanJones says:

It’s quite simple, Reyes and Beltran back to back costly base running blunders. What exactly is a manager used for if he can’t effectively teach his “GUYS” to run the bases?

      FIRE WILLIE!

    • dr jones says:

Willie just said Beltran was told to go on contact

      • almar1965 says:

Ordering that move when you are down by 1 run in the 9th and less than two outs is a head scratcher.

Even Keith Hernandez brought that up after the game.

    • gomets6091 says:

The ball was hit pretty low, his instinct was probably that it wasn’t gonna be caught on the fly and he needed to hustle his butt off to get home before the throw.

      • hyperion4 says:

I agree totally. Beltran’s baserunning was 100% more defensible than Reyes’s.

      • jose--jose-jose-jose says:

Your dead right, gomets. But hey, there is no room for logic or reasonable thinking in these forms so get out!

  372. gomets6091 says:

I have a question for everyone who wants Willie to get fired immediately: say they fire him tonight and hire a replacement in time for the Yankees series: how much of a grace period would you give that new manager and/or Omar? Like, say the Mets fire Willie and then go 3-6 against the Yanks, Braves, and Rockies? Would you blame the new manager, would you blame Omar? I’m just curious.

And for the record, I’m no longer on Willie’s side, I wouldn’t be upset at all if he was fired, I just don’t know if that’s really the solution or just a quick fix.

    • NYsMaineMan says:

I think I could live with that. I mean, this team might simply be short on talent, who knows? Maybe we all over-estimated them? But that being said…the constatnt mental errors, bad pitching moves, and whatnot can be avoided…I think it’s just time for a new voice.

      • chew13 says:

This team is not short on talent; it’s short on FOCUS!!
Regarding the talent though we could use a consistent power threat. Church has been a god-send but we need somebody to do what Delgado was brought here to do and obviously he is not capable of doing anymore. I’m not saying to give up on him he’s just a diff player now. So we need somebody to do the slugging that he was brought here to do.

    • PacmanJones says:

Well it’s obvious they won’t fire him before the Yankees series, sad but true. That said, Jerry Manuel could manage this squad just fine, certainly not any worse than Willie, in the interim while they seek a new head coach.

    • dykstraw says:

omar has the season i guess. which i think is a mistake, i could see him trading three prospects for bartolo colon if he knows his job is on the line.

      same for the new manager.

    • Andrew says:

The hope, at least from my perspective, is that firing Willie will breathe some life into this team.

Remember in 1999, when the Mets were struggling, and then they fired the entire coaching staff except for Bobby V and the team suddenly took off?

      Yeah, like that.

    • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

The person taking over for Willie (probably Jerry Manuel) would only be an interim manager, so he would only be there until a permanent one is hired.

  373. guierllNO MOta says:

THE ONLY “CONSTANT REMINDER” OF 2007 COLLAPSE ARE THE MORONS ON THIS SITE WHO BRING IT UP EVERY SINGLE DAY IN THE MESSAGE BOARDS, THE PLAYERS DONT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT….IM WAITING FOR ONE SMART GUY TO WRITE HOW JOHAN FOCUSES ON 2007 EVERY TIME HE LOSES…RIDICULOUS

    • Ryn05 says:

The constant reminder is in the way they play.

    • NYsMaineMan says:

change your screen name, it reminds me of 2007. chode.

    • npanzeca says:

Don’t think for a milli second that the players don’t think about it. It is firmly implanted in their heads. Jut because they say they don’t think about it doesn’t mean they don’t.

    • dr jones says:

wow man you are on a roll.. You are the most clueless poster on this site..

    • dykstraw says:

says the guy with the mota name? are you effing kidding me?

    • mrose says:

      THANK YOU SIR
      THANK YOU!

    • PacmanJones says:

Johan is reminded by the collapse everyday, by playing with these bums and noticing first hand how their blunders which are still affecting the team this year, played a part last year. Johan played on GOOD twins teams. GOOD twins’ teams that fought it out to the very end, in a very competitive division. Not a team that rolled over like a dead dog in a weak division, essentially handing the title to the Phillies. Oh, did I mention the twins payroll is consistently in the lowest three in the MLB? They play with heart, passion and urgency, something JOHAN has certainly noticed by coming over to this squad of loser reggaetone beer league players, do your thing Carlos Gomez, you’re finally on a first place team!

      • blains2000 says:

Except that one of his Twins buddies is the guy that everyone hates and gets on for not hustling. So I’m confused.

    • Danny1986 says:

Really, that’s the ONLY constant reminder? No one else on SNY, ESPN, the local papers, the national papers, SI, the internet sites, etc… talks about this?

      It’s our fault?

      c’mon, man. Be realistic.

This is a lingering story that everyone will continue add chapters to until the Mets decide, for themselves, to close the phuking book.

  374. HoJoWright says:

    ugh.

  375. edwin nieves says:

Many of you guys make valid pts. I always said NY has the most knowledgable fans. Let’s keep the faith.

  376. stc85 says:

This team may just not be that good. .500 team for a year now. Mediocre.

    • NYsMaineMan says:

true…true…tough to stomach, but true, this team could simply lack the talent.

      • krumbledkookie says:

As others have said, they are not lacking in the talent department. They’re lacking in the execution department. On paper, the Mets should be 14 games up on everyone else in this division.

  377. Thee Bruce Dickenson says:

THE PLAYERS DONT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT….. that is EXACTLY the problem!!!

  378. NYsMaineMan says:

Look at the bright side, though, pelfrey looked ridiculous.

  379. Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

Should Omar be fired for simply deciding not to fire Willie the day after last years collapse?

    • npanzeca says:

Willie was Omars perfect scapegoat for all of his own failings.

      • NYsMaineMan says:

        nice ball…good point.

      • dr jones says:

I think there definitely something to this.. in a way Willie is a buffer for Omar.. cause once Willie is gone, it will be all on Omar. So I think Omar will use Willie as a way to keep his job.

        • npanzeca says:

Exactly why he told the Wilpons to keep Willie, he knew that if we got off to this kind of start that he could fire Willie and save himself. If he fired Willie he would be the next to go.

      • chew13 says:

Omars good moves have far outweighed the bad. Omar did his job in the offseason by adding the best pitcher in the game, church, schneider, wise. Willie hasn’t gotten his players to get the job done on the field. Willie deserves to go: bottom line. He’s not the same manager he was in 2005. Wayyy less disciplined and doen’t hold “his guys” accountable. And really Jose hasn’t been the same player since Willie embarassed him last year. We’ve seen it since he came up he’s the most exciting player in the game and it’s quite obvious that something is off. Lastly the most telling thing to me was gotay’s comments a week after he was cut. “It’s not the players, it’s the manager”. Call it sour grapes but coupled with what i’ve been watching for the last year it’s very alarming.

    • Knuckles99 says:

Mets fans should protest with their dollars. This would send a message to the front office. We are the ultimate authorities as to how we like our team managed. A quarter of the season has been viewed by us all and for the most part, the team is not performing as it should for the ridiculous payroll that we are at. I would much rather pay $4.75 for a “drink” and watch a team that I knew wasn’ t supposed to win, then the $8 I pay now. Pick a day. Any day. A walk out! Hear the fans!

      • PacmanJones says:

Dude have you seen the attendance of a week day game? Regardless of SNY telling you that 45k are in attendance, its rarely more than 15k.

        • napes22 says:

That’s because today’s fan doesn’t want to see baseball unless it “counts” or if Johan is pitching. If I had the money, I’d have season tickets and go to at least half if not more of the season’s games.

        • PacmanJones says:

today’s fan? I’m pretty sure the yankees and red sox sell out every weekday game, or at least come close to it. Mets and Yankes reside in the same city and they consistently draw 20k more players than us on the weekdays.

    • Gina says:

Or for putting together a .500 team in the first place.

  380. backinbusiness says:

Can someone post an objective summary of the post-game comments?

    • Ryn05 says:

Something needs to happen, this is no longer acceptable.

    • Thee Bruce Dickenson says:

Here is the most objective summary of today’s game: The NY Mets are worse than a little league team!

      • backinbusiness says:

Yes, I watched the game. I was wondering if Willie commented on the Reyes, Castillo, and Wright blunders.

  381. playmaker3128 says:

I don’t know why some of you want to fire omar. The guy has helped change the face of this franchise. Sure he’s made a couple of bad moves, every GM does. However he’s made some masterful moves as well. Like getting John Maine and Duaner, how he played the Johan sweepstakes this winter. Not to mention signing some big name free agents.

Yes he’s made some bad moves. The trades of guys like bannister, heath bell and some other bullpen desicions. However do we really wanna fire the guy that has brought this team (talent wise) to where it is right now. Do we really wanna take a chance and get a steve phillips GM in return.

the real problem is willie imo. When he first came up people questioned some of his in game managing, but he always had a great clubhouse. Now, to go along with the in game stuff i think he’s losing the clubhouse. It just feels that is the case just by watching this team. I really think willie is losing the team, if that is the case he’s gotta go.

    • Mingo says:

And it was telling when Wagner felt the need to speak up.

    • dr jones says:

This is a TOP 5 mlb franchise, Its easy when you have money. Not saying he hasn’t done some good things but if he keeps Willie then its all on him.. Its his choice to keep or fire Willie and thus responsible for the teams success or failure. Its clear there is a problem with the Manager so If he keeps this guy and they fail, then he is to blame.

      • gomets6091 says:

        ha. ha-ha. HA-HA….HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Top 5 MLB Franchise? Since when, 2005? These are the freaking New York Mets, who have the worst season in MLB History, have finished in last place FAR more than they’ve finished in first place, and prior to 8 years ago had never even been to back-to-back postseasons. Clearly you are a bandwagon fan that you think this is a top 5 MLB franchise. Maybe that’s the problem with most of the people on here, they haven’t quite figured out that hovering around .500 and being in 3rd place is ABOVE normal expectations for the Mets, historically speaking.

    • eddiekrules says:

the problem isn’t Omar or Willie. Outside of, the catchers, Church, and Wright early in the season, no one has been consistent offensively. Reyes isn’t hitting and his defense and decision making always follow. Castillo is easy to defend, he either slaps it or puches it. Beltran/Wright/Delgado can’t seem to get a hit against anybody above Rookie League level right now. The bench is made up of Castillo clones for the most part. Tatis and Alou are just getting started so it is hard to be down on them yet. So WTF does Willie do about it? How can Omar make these guys live up to their billing? It is a long season, things may turn around. Remember, a pretty big lead was blown by someone last year. And the possiblilty exists of a trade or FA pickup too.

  382. DerangedHermit says:

At least Izzy isn’t in our bullpen. He’s not only fallen off a cliff, he’s falling off of several.

  383. Mingo says:

Here’s the problem. The Mets find different ways to lose. They have a great starting staff, a good bullpen, good hitters, good fielders, yet they find new ways to lose. It is the managers job to put all the pieces together. He isn’t doing it.
Also, this team needs something to fire it up. Willie isn’t doing it. Any change would improve this team from the .500 ball it has played for about a year now.

  384. dr jones says:

I’m getting tired of David Wright being the only one to speak for this team.

I want to hear DELGADO talk about losses,, I want to hear Beltran,, and on a consistent basis.. Enough already with David,, Lets hear the other guys

    • backinbusiness says:

I am at work, did David say “I take responsibility for not running out the dropped ball”?

      • metsfan227 says:

No…but no one asked him about it. At least not what they showed on SNY.

  385. pametfan311 says:

What’s WORSE is that the Mets are JUST THE MEDICINE needed for the Spankees Right Now…

They better perform over the weekend or WILLIE WILL AND SHOULD BE GONE MONDAY !!!!!

I feel like SEPTEMBER NEVER ENDED…

  386. Teufel Sheufel says:

    WILLIOT MUST GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  387. metsfan119 says:

This team is a freaking joke, the NFL season can’t come soon enough

  388. Gland says:

If they are going to fire Willie who are they going to bring in? And enough of this Bobby V bs. He is NOT coming back. I’m sick to death of people pining away for ex-Mets.

Seriously, who is the replacement for Willie? HoJo?

    • dykstraw says:

this is the most tired argument (and the last one appearing to hold water) from the WPP. any baseball guy could match the terrible job willie is doing running this club.

    • metsfan119 says:

      ANYONE, who cares

    • dr jones says:

it doesn’t matter… They need to get Willie as far away from this club as possible.

      • Bruce Boisclair says:

        Just one man’s random thoughts–

        Internal candidates—

        Jerry Manuel (probably not)
        Hojo
        Ken Oberkfell

        External–

Tony Pena (I like this idea, but don’t know if the Yankees would let him go mid-season)
        Felipe Alou
        Frank Robinson
        Lee Mazzilli
        Wally Backman
        Kevin Kennedy
        Phil Garner
        Davey Johnson?

Did I miss anyone? (And don’t say Bobby V– that ship has sailed and we really don’t want to go there…)

      • Gland says:

Everybody wants to fire this guy or trade that guy but nobody ever has any suggestions of who to bring in as a replacement. It gets so old.

I have no problem dumping Willie. It should have been done at the end of last season. But doesn’t anyone else get sick of the constant “fire Willie” complaints? It’s just so negative. Personally I am not giving up on this team yet, and every game I watch I am going to hope that they win. But it seems like most of the people on here don’t feel that way.

    • NYMBosco says:

Lee Mazzilli and get Leo Mazzone for pitching coach

    • rustysribs says:

      In the interim….Jerry Manual

    • chew13 says:

My ideal coach would be Ron Gardenhire but that’s not going to happen. Not this year anyway. I think Omar should reach out to Felipe Alou and see if he’s interested in coaching his boy again. FELIPE 08!!

  389. Knuckles99 says:

Omar is not the problem. The talent is on the field. Talent needs to be motivated. These guys are human. Humans need leaders. Willie, Ho Jo and forgive me for saying this, even Rick P. has seen their best days. New leaders. New passion. New focus. Sounds like a car commercial. Get this done!!! Quick break.

    • Thee Bruce Dickenson says:

The talent is on the field. Talent needs to be motivated….. WHICH TALENT!!!???? I haven’t seen any talent in 2008.

  390. Knuckles99 says:

Willie, Ho Jo, Heilman, Sosa (DFA’d) and Delgado need to be let go. Can’t stomache Delgado any longer. Can any team afford to have a first baseman with no bat play 140 games?

    To be put on notice
    Wright
    Reyes
    Castillo
    Perez
    Beltran

    To get achievement awards
    Church
    Joe Smith
    Wagner

    • PacmanJones says:

Julio Franco recently retired from the mexican leagues, he would be a much better coach than Randope and it doesn’t matter if he speaks broken english!

    • pametfan311 says:

I agree….Church is the ONLY one worth ANYTHING ON OFFENSE….The rest of the team BLOWS offensively…where’s the combacks this year?? WHERES THE 7TH/8TH INNING RALLIES THIS YEAR???

Willie lost this team last September and CANNOT get them Back…End of Story !!!!!!!

    • gomets6091 says:

David Wright’s on pace for 30 homers and 130 RBI. God, he sucks…

  391. npanzeca says:

And now I’m listening to Fatsessa and the puppy and want to rip my ears off my head. They are clueless beyond belief.

  392. Knuckles99 says:

Taste my champagne Willie. Nice sparkling champagne.

  393. MetfanMD says:

Maybe we can DFA willie and let him work on his managerial skills in the minors…

  394. metsfan119 says:

How anyone can defend Willie at this point is beyond me. When exactly can we start to criticize the man?

  395. npanzeca says:

Listening to Randopes comments and now I feel myself actually losing brain cells listening to him babble.

  396. miltenberg says:

the word “fire” has been used 83 times in this thread, in case anyone was curious

  397. Knuckles99 says:

    I’ll say this again.

Mets fans should protest with their dollars. This would send a message to the front office. We are the ultimate authorities as to how we like our team managed. A quarter of the season has been viewed by us all and for the most part, the team is not performing as it should for the ridiculous payroll that we are at. 398. MainStMets says:

this game isnt on willie, no matter what he does, ppl are going to say he is wrong.

stay w pelfrey, oh no hes out of gas
take him out, oh no the pen will blow it

reyes made the wrong choice, sure, but it took a perfect throw and a heads up play from guzman for him to be out

what about that great run, diving catch from harris to save the game for the nats? he misses that ball and it rolls to the fence, tie ball game

and to the guys talkin abt flores like hes a HOF? hes the nats 3rd string catcher, hes only playing bc the 2 guys in front of him are hurt

    • PacmanJones says:

      ^^^ willie lover. hike it.

    • dykstraw says:

1 out, fast runner on 3rd, no one on the left side of the infield

      YOU BUNT

      PERIOD

    • Mingo says:

You don’t get it. It doesn’t matter any more how we lose. Its that we find different ways to lose. That is the manager’s problem.

    • metsfan119 says:

But you can’t get rid of the pen, or Reyes, or Delgado, or any of the other crap. This team needs change and the manager, who we all know is no strategist, hasn’t lit ANYTHING under these player’s a$$es. It is time, it has been time, for this guy to go.

  399. PacmanJones says:

Hope Gary enjoyed the day reminiscing about his child hood days. The team might have sucked, but they definitely played with more FIRE than this squad.

  400. GuruMets says:

Are we going for the all-time record in comments made after a 1-0 loss here? Sheesh.

    • pametfan311 says:

YOU CAN’T LOSE 3 OUT OF 4 AT HOME TO THE NATS AFTER LAST SEPTEMBER’S DEBACLE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  401. PacmanJones says:

the Fire Willie movement strengthens by the second! UNITE!!

  402. metsfan119 says:

It’s not just ONE loss, this team (the most talented team in the NL, I still, maybe naively, feel) has played like sh&t for over a year now. You don’t hire a hobo to drive a cadillac.

    • PacmanJones says:

This team has played 500 baseball for the past 155 games. Does anyone else see a problem with this? At least if we had HANK STEINBRENNER he’d be making RANDOPE feel uncomfortable and he would have canned him after the collapse. Never thought I’d wish our GM would act more like a lunatic, but in that regard, I wish he would.

  403. floydsbrickinthewall says:

I think its time to rebuild this team. I just dont see how they are going to make the playoffs this year. They have no support in their own ballpark; the manager, though not really important to the outcome of the game, is now affecting the outcome of the game; the young guys are slumping with no sign of breaking out of their malaise; the old player are playing old. There are some players that might have value for a competing team. I guess Delagdo can nab a couple of prospects, Alou probably nothing, Heilman can grab us something, Wagner could probably get us something good if he continues to pitch well. There is always a need for a closer on a playoff bound team. I dont want to say it, but Reyes could net us a windfall in prospects, especially at the trading deadline.
If they don’t want to be that drastic, I guess they can fire Willie. I like the idea of bringing in someone who knows the team, maybe Julio Franco or Jose Valentin, Howard Johnson would not be a bad choice either, along with Jerry Manuel. How about giving the jacket the full manager’s job and see how that turns out. I like his analytical approach to the game.

  404. metsfan119 says:

I know I’ll get crap for this, but I hope the Mets get embarrassed by the Yankees this weekend. This team needs to hit rock bottom while there’s still time.

  405. marvelousmarv says:

This team just isn’t as good as we thought. And to all the optimists, yes we’re in it. But i’m sick and freakin tired of JUST BEING IN IT. I want to be on the top for once with the confidence that no one will beat us! I dont get that from this team.

The 2006 team had this. They had a fight to them. They seemed hungry. This team doesn’t seem anything, but content.

Who’s to blame? I dont know! Its partly Willie. But c’mon how much can we put on him. At this point i’m looking forward to next year. This doesn’t seem like its ours. I know its only mid-May but how many of us feel like this is going to turn around. I have zero confidence that it i will. And i hope i’m wrong!

    • dykstraw says:

      how much blame? enough.

    • metsfan119 says:

Yeah, it’s not ALL Willie’s fault, but he’s the guy you can get rid of. At the very least, it’s not like another manager can have this team underachieve any worse than Willie.

    • pametfan311 says:

Who else DO you blame for lackluster, no heart, no guts and STUPID PLAY ????????

  406. johnfromflushing says:

DONT WORRY !!!!!! it’s only may….. and statistics show, clutch hitting and hitters DO NONT EXSIST.. sorry keith ….. and statistics also show delgado is hitting line drives , there outs but line drives … which means surely the monster year is just ahead….. oh and beltrans still as clutch …..(if clutch exsisted ) as anybody……

so the good news … stats and micro stats show it’s early and this is a playoff bound club……

    dont believe your eyes…

  407. MetfanMD says:

FIRE WILLIE clap clap clapclapclap….FIRE WILLIE clap clap clapclapclap….

  408. Knuckles99 says:

Change is good. Everybody fears it. Change is good. They change hitting coaches on a whim. Is Willie a manager you could never live without? I’m sure your answer is no, you could live without him. Then good bye. There is a managerial answer out there. Always is. I have been through probably 100 managers with these guys. Double that number across town. Managers are a “feel” thing. Nobody at this level adds that much value. One teams terrible manager becomes a hall of famer somewhere else. Depends on chemistry. Champagne Willie failed that class.

  409. johnfromflushing says:

oh and randolph has completely morphed into rich kotite….. so at least we got that going for us..

“we played hard …. we had good stuff, i dont know………. we got bad luck….”

  410. Gina says:

I don’t particularly care for Willy, or dislike him. I would hope with our resources we could do better, but I don’t think firing him is going to make a huge difference one way or another.

    • metsfan119 says:

Maybe it will, maybe it won’t, but we DO know that keeping him will mean .500 baseball. So you tell me what the smart move is?

      • Gina says:

I don’t really think there is a smart move. I guess we might as well fire him since we basically have nothing to lose. I just feel like it would be an empty victory I guess. I won’t really feel any more optimistic about this season.

  411. PacmanJones says:

I was just told by a colleague that a Mets press conference is scheduled for 5:30, can anyone confirm this, has this been on the fan? If true, I will be watching it very excited at home and heading out for celebratory drinks following.

  412. metsfan119 says:

When the Mets finally fire this clown (whenever it happens) they’ve got to go outside the organization. I don’t want anyone who was involved in last September to be running this team.

  413. dr jones says:

I have no faith in the organization until they get rid of Willie,, I won’t go to another game until he is gone. I know thats not cool and I should be supporting my team but I can do that from my couch. I buy Merchandise and spend money in other ways to support them but I cannot go to shea until he is gone. Its sad that he is destroying this team/organization in the final year of shea….

  414. metsfan119 says:

Please bring back Bobby V Mets.

    • cbkolb says:

While I agree that Bobby V would be exactly what this team needs right now…after watching “The Zen of Bobby V.” I am reluctant to think that he would actually return to managing here in the states…let alone in NYC.

      Just my humble opinion.

  415. jay15 says:

    To Jose-Jose-Jose-Jose.

Marlins fire Jeff Torberg in the middle of the 2003 season. Jack Mckeon leads them to a win in the World Series.

Mets fire pitching coach Bob Apodaca in the middle of the season. Mets win 8 in a row and go to the World Series.

I just don’t see what the downside is to firing Willie at this point. What’s the worst that happens they go from a 3rd place team to a 5th place team.

And for all the Willie supporters out there they always say the bad things aren’t Willie’s fault but they never explain the good things he does or how he is an asset.

So even if this team does turn it around. I don’t think it will be because Willie turned it around. They probably turned it around inspite of him.

I just don’t see the downside at this point

  416. krumbledkookie says:

I’ve defended Willie, but the time has come to give him the boot. You can’t get rid of the players, so get rid of the manager. No excuse for losing three of four to the last place Nationals especially with great pitching performances from Vargas and Big Pelf. This is just sickening and the only way to try to fire this bunch of guys up is to fire the manager.

The talent is there on the field – we just need someone to give it some juice.

    • gomets6091 says:

well, technically, you CAN get rid of the players. The Marlins showed us that blueprint in 1998 and 2004.

  417. dr jones says:

I love Bobby V,, please bring him back OMAR please.. I will buy season tickets if they do

  418. daga89 says:

    NOT ANOTHER ONE!!!!!!
Its Crazy, we need a fly ball out and DelgaNO-clue, is up and he cant even do that. Its painful watching him try to learn to hit again. IMO Either he got OLD FAST or he had help staying young and MLB isnt looking the other way on that front anymore.

Ok, How long before he takes a “day off” and Tatis Wally Pipps him at first base. I’ll take Tatis’ Kingman-like swing for the fences over anymore weak grounders to fielders in the shift.

This Team has NOT shown they have the mental fight to come from behind and though they made a valiant effort today, that game was still up for grabs so it would of been harder for them to go into the “its early we can just play out the rest of the game”
Find some fire guys and stop beating yourselves up and GIVING UP!

  419. gipper82475 says:

Still no post-game post from Metsblog? Hard to put this one into words, I would imagine!

  420. backinbusiness says:

For the Willie haters out there…

Haven’t you ever been on a team with a jackass coach, where some player with leadership gets the group together and says, “Eff this guy, we’re doing this for us, etc etc.”

If you are right that Willie has “lost the team” — I don’t know that, though I do know they aren’t playing up to their potential — who is that guy and why isn’t he giving that speech at that meeting?

A lack of player leadership is more dangerous to me than bad managing. A new guy isn’t going to fire these people up if they lack internal fire.

  421. chew13 says:

takt this with a grain of salt but M& MD are reporting of a possible post game clubhouse blow up by WAGS. interesting

  422. 7train says:

Anyone listening to WFAN. Word is Wagner blew up after the game. Any word at work over here.

  423. marvelousmarv says:

Hey is George Bamburger still available?

  424. metsfan119 says:

Apparently Wagner went ape-sh&^ after the game, Mike and the Mad Dog are trying to get audio

    • backinbusiness says:

I’m sure there’s audio. Wagner would only go nuts somewhere it could be taped.

I just don’t trust that guy (outside the 9th inning, of course).

      • metsfan119 says:

at least he seems to care

        • backinbusiness says:

WHAT DO YOU KNOW? Wagner’s blow up is “Talk to the guys who played, not me! Oh wait, they’re not in front of their lockers.”

          Great team guy, that Wagner.

      • DjDeF says:

I am sure the clubhouse is crawling with reporters. The problem is we cant get the instant update from Adam Rubin etc. because they are trying to gather info before they get back to their computers.

    • DjDeF says:

Could this be a gee golly gosh ya gotta believe?

It would be great to hear Eddie C. report on FAN saying Ap@$hit

      Fatcess: What happened with wagner?

Eddie C: In a nutshell he went Ap@$hit

  425. Knuckles99 says:

What do you have to lose? If he was a super manager who had incredible success, with a proven track record, with a following, with great verbal and personnel skills, I would say, don’t be so rash. We gave him a team in ‘06. Bust. ‘07. Bust. ‘08…sputter, sputter, ka-boom! Never hold onto losses for too long. The ability to cut losses and move onto better investments is a good manager (GM). Or, the job will be your own. Not for Champagne Willie. Not me.

  426. floydsbrickinthewall says:

Something has got to give, this team is playing way below their PECOTA predictions.

  427. metsfan119 says:

Don’t forget in ‘99 when the Mets fired their pitching and hitting coaches when they were 2 games under .500 in June, they went 60-20 over their next 80 games. Sometimes change in leadership sparks something.

  428. dr jones says:

    you just shot the clown”

    Keith Hernandez

  429. Runshouse says:

1000 comments and no update from Mets blog.. considering the temperature of the fans this corporate switch is getting ridiculous.

  430. floydsbrickinthewall says:

I havent seen any news of a Mets press conference.

  431. 7train says:

Hey guys, WAS a Willie supporter. I’m down to oust him.

-What do you guys think about an underachieving Tigers team under Leyland, a supposed good to great manager.

  432. npanzeca says:

He told a reporter today, “ive been booed before young man”. There is also a report that Wagner went off after the game.

  433. djbutler says:

1000+ comments to a post, is that a record

    • Danny1986 says:

you obvioulsy weren’t around when the Manny-for-Milledge trade nearly occured.

  434. Knuckles99 says:

Wagner is the first sign. If others on the team had the successes and desire to be excellent (not just good), you would see them all about face and look at Willie. Canary in the mine. Manager without the respect of his peers has lost the most important motivational tool. Good bye.

  435. dr jones says:

Mike and Chris were just saying that they heard Billy Wagner went crazy in the clubhouse. Hope this is true..

  436. johnfromflushing says:

if we’re lucky , the hof bound marlon anderson will call a team meting and lead them to the promised land….

but all kidding aside…. chalk it up to learning a lesson and turn the page….

  437. k-mets says:

    Wow!
I just went to Lohud to get mets report to see if there is mention of Wags, and boy did John D went off on Willie and the club. This is new!

  438. metsfan119 says:

Cerrone, I think you’re going to have to add negative numbers to the confidence poll

  439. backinbusiness says:

Wagner’s fit is “dont blame me, I didn’t play.” jerkoff.

    • npanzeca says:

Wagner is right on here. The ones responsible for today were no where to be found, big shocker.

    • backinbusiness says:

Wagner is Mr. “Throw A Teammate Under the Bus.” He plays only for himself. It’s tiring.

    • dykstraw says:

wagner is 100% right here. los merengue mets never take any accountability.

      • backinbusiness says:

a poster below said jose was at his locker answering questions, but i guess that doesn’t fit into your theory?

        • dykstraw says:

um, nope. because even if jose was talking today, he rarely is. same for castillo, beltran and delgado. instead we see wagner, wright, schneider and the pitchers every night. unless someone else did something good.

      • backinbusiness says:

and apparently beltran also took questions.

  440. Bobby Bones in SC says:

    I quote…
“It was only the second time in 30 career starts that Bergmann didn’t allow a run”

The two H’s are the problem. Hitting and Hielman. I don’t care who they fire to get some sort of improvement. To lose three out four to the pathetic Nats is a disgrace.

I predicted at the beginning of the season Willie wouldn’t make to the Yankees series. I guess I was wrong. Something has to give though, because there is too much money and expectation for the team to be this bad!

  441. metsfan119 says:

To his credit, at least when Wagner blows a save he actually stands up and talks to the media, unlike the usual crappy suspects in the Mets locker room like Delgado, Reyes, etc. who turn into the invisible men.

    • blains2000 says:

I can’t stand Heilman but he answered all the questions last night.

    • chew13 says:

For the record. Jose was at his locker and manned up and answered all the questions the media frenzy had.

      • Danny says:

Shh, you might stem the racist comments!

        • Danny1986 says:

i didn’t see a racist comment anywhere. what the hell are you selling, chief?

        • dykstraw says:

yeah, i’m a racist. that’s why i own a reyes jersey and pedro, reyes, beltran, delgado, johan and perez shirts.

wagner a racist too? because that’s what you’re saying. never mind he called feliciano the most important guy in the bullpen last year.

i hope the WPP plays the race card as their last ditch defense.

        • Danny says:

Yeah, classifying the Latino players as “los merengue mets” was in good taste.

          Well done.

Egg on your face that Reyes stood there and answered the questions, huh?

        • Danny says:

P.S. Some of my best friends are black.

        • metsfan227 says:

I didn’t hear Reyes’ post game comments. Did he actually take any responsibility? I’ve seen Jose answer plenty of questions, but actually take responsibility and admit he made a mistake, well, let’s just say I haven’t seen that happen too much.

        • dykstraw says:

as much egg on my face as wagner, who apparently is also a racist. like loduca before him.

racist is the new giving a s**t, apparently

        • Danny says:

          Weak.

  442. johnfromflushing says:

clearly the problem is the met fan base…. to much booooing…

    • johnfromflushing says:

i mean how does a 16 mil $ athelete possibly perform , with fans booing…

  443. Knuckles99 says:

Wagner is right if he said that. Get him the ball. Someone take ownership here. If he blew a save, then you can blame him. Not to sound metaphorical here but, not everyone was responsible for the sinking of the Titanic. Find the person, if they can’t change, change them! What is so difficult? If they weren’t so fat headed and ego driven, it would be plain as day!

  444. mex84 says:

Just gonna throw this out there, but do you think Jose and Aaron are dogging it lately trying to get Willie fired. I know its greatly unprofessional, but i am sure it has happened in sports before. I mean Jose has not been the same since he was reprimanded by Willie last year and we all know Aaron wants to be a starter.

    • metsfan119 says:

No, I just think Heilman’s confidence is shot and Reyes’ mind is completely wacked right now

      • Bobby Bones in SC says:

Agreed. Hielman doesn’t have the make-up to come out of the pen. It is really showing now, and his confidence is gone.

As for Jose, if he is dogging it to get Willie fired then he needs to play for someone else. He is probably the fourth or fifth best SS in the NL. Maybe even worse. In other words he is not that good.

        • Danny says:

Yeah, trying to take an extra base to help out a sputtering offense while making every play in the field is clearly dogging it.

        • mex84 says:

Thats why i threw this out there. I am in California and see nothing as far as Mets games, just stats. Thanks for the feedback!

        • toomanyuniforms says:

He’s not dogging it, no. He’s just not focusing. Or, just an idiot.

        • metsfan227 says:

Trying to take an extra base when you are down 1-0 is foolish. If you’re winning, fine but in close game you have to calculate the risk/reward and, as we found it, the risk wasn’t worth it.

    • toomanyuniforms says:

That might qualify as cutting off your head to spite your face. No way.

    • mex84 says:

From the responses it sounds like just poor fundamentals which reflects the training/managing a team gets. Not gonna be pretty around this team after the weekend if they dont take the Yankee series.

  445. toomanyuniforms says:

The time is right. We don’t need until Memorial Day. Willie has to go. Now. Really sorry to write that, but I think having him manage one more game would be a mistake. Time to try to salvage the season. The next guy will have his hands full trying to get Reyes to grow up and sprout a brain, trying to get something positive out of the bullpen, trying to get someone – anyone – to get a timely hit, but there are pieces in place, and we got a good outing today from another young pitcher. It’s clear that this team and Randolph are not right for each other. Clear as day. No use dragging this out and making a spectacle.

  446. MainStMets says:

So we want to fire the manager, tell me who exactly are we going to replace him with on May 15th?

    • toomanyuniforms says:

A red herring that can manage.

    • WozzyBear says:

Wally Backman, Bobby Valentine, Lee Mazzilli, Keith Hernandez, Gary Carter, Jerry Manuel, my little sister….

In short, ANYONE but Willie. This screams of a need for a “change to make a change.”

    • gipper82475 says:

A blind, three-legged, rabid basset hound. Would be a huge improvement over Willie.

  447. guierllNO MOta says:

and then Willie Randolph said “Howard, could you step into my office please”

  448. backinbusiness says:

Wagner should be on his ESPN 1050 spot at 5:20…

  449. MainStMets says:

    “hes mr invisible”

santana is a no show in the locker room

  450. guierllNO MOta says:

Willie’s not getting fired until July @ the earliest, for no other reason than Jerry Manuel is not the right guy to manage either and there is no one else out there. Just like we cant get a closer who is not signed by 5/15 to sign with us to be a set-up guy….

people are so used to playing fantasy and video games that they forget how real baseball moves (players & coaches) work.

    • toomanyuniforms says:

I would imagine that, yes, Manuel would interim manage for a few games, or you might get Oberkfell elevated, etc. Managers have been fired early in the season before. This isn’t a novel concept.

    • dykstraw says:

      jerry manuel > willie randolph

and if you can’t see that, you’re wrong

      • guierllNO MOta says:

based on what smart guy? he was such a good manager that Ozzie Guillen took his team and won a WS with them when he couldnt get em to 500

        • blains2000 says:

Yeah, really. Why Jerry Manuel? He didn’t do anything with that Chisox team.

        • dykstraw says:

because he is not willie randolph and this team needs a change

          period

        • toomanyuniforms says:

He’s only being discussed as an INTERIM manager, people. Interim.

        • blains2000 says:

Yeah but why Manuel? He is the bench coach. You all think the Willie is a moron. You don’t think that Manuel is part of this at all?

And if he’s such a genius and he isn’t advising Willie you shouldn’t choose him just for that.

        • dykstraw says:

willie has shown himself to be mule stubborn. which in my opinion gets manuel (as well as peterson re: bullpen usage) 100% off the hook.

  451. I_Need_More_Cowbell_Please says:

still no post game summary.. are the guy digging through the dictionary for vocabularies without using expletives?

  452. rivertech says:

The Mets have no heart and show no passion for the game. Whatever happened to the days of nails, Mex, etc? Those guys had a few all-stars and role players (Backman, Teufel, Mitchell, Knight, etc) but played with the passion of 12 yr old kids. This team is baby sat way too much. Mr Wright needs to speak up ASAP and stop being PC. If Wags got pissed off, that is great! He is the only one showing passion for the game. You need guys Like Freel/Reed Johnson, etc. The Nationals know the Mets are soft and they sense it on the field which is frightening. Other teams will sense that also. They lack killer instinct and an identity. Willie will take the hit on this one.

  453. daga89 says:

I dont have a problem with the Reyes play at least he was trying.

On Willie, IMO the biggest hit he takes from me is that he doesnt seem to manage on instinct its by whatever the current book is, low risk and unimaginative and I dont think coincidence that the media all starts talking about something (batting order, starting pitchers going longer…etc) and then he does it shortly after. He seems too robotic and predictable which has me believe he isnt going by his own feel.

That being said, his “no worry” it will get better, remember he was caught saying that to himself as Sept was crumbling around him, atitude has spread and it may take a change of manager to alter it. I would love Willie to take a “SCREW-you” approach to all and just go with his gut as it cant hurt.

    • Danny says:

No! You’re supposed to say that Reyes has no heart or no passion for the game! That’s why we lost!

He wasn’t hustling on that play to third.! He was being reckless! Don’t you understand?!?!?!?!

      • toomanyuniforms says:

Let’s try this one more time. It’s about playing smart and focusing, not hustling, per se.

        • metsfan227 says:

Right..playing foolishly helps no one. No one is calling out his *hustle.* But it was a completely stupid move on his part.

        • Danny says:

It was ill-advised, but I don’t think it was a lack of focus. He wanted to get to third with 1 out. Given how horrible our offense has been, that increased the odds of him scoring exponentially.

It took a good defensive play to get him.

        • toomanyuniforms says:

With Wright and Beltran coming up, no way is that EVER a good play.

        • Danny says:

Yeah, because they have been killing it lately.

        • metsfan227 says:

That’s irrelevant. Reyes didn’t give anyone a chance because he gave the Nationals an out by being so foolish. In a close game, when your team is losing, that play makes ZERO sense.

        • Danny says:

He went on instinct since the base was open. It was ill-advised but he was trying to make a play to help his team win. I think the criticism is a little overblown.

        • metsfan227 says:

I understand your point, but you have to admit that what he did was cost the Mets a chance to actually score. I understand that he was trying to help, the point is he was trying to help too much, He should have just gone to second and let the other guys do their job. His job is to be on base, not to attempt to do so much that you actually stop playing smart.

Given the game situation, that play wasn’t smart. I agree, that he had good intentions but that doesn’t make it right.

        • Danny says:

When you’re losing and the offense is struggling, stuff like that is going to happen because you force the issue. He pressed. If we were crushing the ball, he would have never even thought of doing it.

It was a painful play, no doubt. But I think it completely flies in the face of everyone that says that this team has no heart or competitive fire or whatever.

He cares and he was trying to win.

  454. MainStMets says:

whats the big deal w the post game wrap up being posted?

eddie c dishing it out on the fan right now

  455. Knuckles99 says:

Masochists. Watching this team is like taking a hot iron to the side of your face, over and over. Seven game lead. Making losing to the Nats a perennial occurence. The players know it. The fans know it. Nobody is being ignorant here. Go into your office. Empty out your files. Put them in a box. Go home. Thank you very much. Simple. Whose next? Oh Delgado, you’re not hitting? For over a year now? Well, take a seat. We’ll get you some at bats. Heilman? Yeah, okay, how about we get you some innings say on a day we are up 7-2? No, you have to play with a stomache ache. Why? You make 19 mill.

  456. metsfan119 says:

NOBODY in the dugout should be the next manager of the Mets

    • rivertech says:

You are right…..no one but there are guys who can manage in the farm and Carter is itching for a change. At least he has experience.

  457. guierllNO MOta says:

the prob with a handful of posters on this site is that while most of the willie-haters turned that way in August 2007 (or maybe even june or july) you have been that way since 2005….and that makes you all dead wrong as Willie has enjoyed more success as a manager(yes check the records) than any manager since Davey….youve been waiting for him to fail.

To me…if Willie goes, wait till the end of the year and try and bring Acta back…as you can see when we let a gret baseball mind go to the Nats/Expos and then bringthem back it works out well…see Omar Minaya holder of the 28 good trades/signing and 5 bad trades/signings record…only Billy Beane is better…maybe

    • dr jones says:

      SHUT YOUR MOUTH TOOL

      • mrose says:

you have got to be kidding right?

      • guierllNO MOta says:

dr jones has to be the most idiotic person to post on this site, he has never made even a lucid comment and just finds any way to write fire willie….good thing Pelfrey didnt pitch a no-no today or he wouldnt have anything to whine about, go be a yankee fan and jump off a cliff

    • Danny1986 says:

why would Acta leave WASH? He obviously has a better team over there.

  458. I have a premonition….Wagner’s next save will be blown by a Delgado error. They then proceed to brawl in the dugout….

  459. dr jones says:

Well finally we can put a few things to rest.

We now know this team is not a unit. They are a clubhouse divided.

Can you figgen believe this…. How can this team possibly win if they don’t play for each other…

    Billy statement speak volumes..

  460. gomets6091 says:

First off, I want to say that I think it’s time for Willie to go. So don’t go labeling me part of the Willie Fan Club or anything here, but some of you people seriously need to calm the F down. This loss sucks, this series sucks, and so far, this season has sucked. But you seriously need some perspective

In 1998, the Mets lost their last 5 games and blew a shot at the playoffs. Then, in ‘99 they started strong before losing EIGHT games in a row, including the first 2 of a series against the Yankees. They then went 70-38 the rest of the season, and that includes a SEVEN game losing streak in late September. There is still plenty of time for this team to not only be good, but be great. It’s pretty rare for teams to dominate wire-to-wire.

Now, that said, the catalyst in ‘99 was the shake up of the coaching staff, and I think this team needs a shakeup too, which getting rid of Willie could be.

    • rivertech says:

That’s exactly it. They need a shakeup in the coaching staff and 25 man roster. They need gamers. That’s what is missing.

  461. Knuckles99 says:

The team was given to him. How do you test your managerial metal when the team has done well? When a team is failing and you can’t correct them, such as since last June or July until now, and you have added nothing, that is a test of a manager. Hard times. He has failed. Statistics are used to quantify an argument. I could do the same. Like blah blah less than .500 ball after the All Star. Like first meltdown in team history. Subjectively worst meltdown, but whatever. Do you really think we need to wait until the end of this year and be satisfied with a .500 finish? 150 mill later? No playoffs, again? 22 years and still counting boys and girls. New York isn’t the Mid-West. We have patience. We aren’t saints. See you Willie. Liked you for a while. Now, you go down with the faceless managers of old.

  462. jay15 says:

Why do people keep bringing up Carter as an option. Didn’t he leave the organization because he was pissed he didn’t get the Double A job or something like that.

I don’t remember the details exactly. But I know he left angry because he didn’t get one of the managerial jobs

    • Danny1986 says:

he wanted to stay in Florida where his fmaily is. the only thing that will lure him from there is a job with the big league club. so when HoJo got the call over him, he opted out as opposed to riding a bus in-and-out of Binghampton.

    • yeah you’re right…he was on the fan a few weeks ago to promote his book and he’s defiitely still bitter. He basically wanted a guarantee from the organization that if he took the job in the minors(I think Double A) that he would eventually be the big league manager.

    • rivertech says:

Bringing up Carter because he has the mentality for it. As a former catcher he knows what it takes. I’m sure his bitterness will end once he gets an offer like the Mets. What better guy to bring us back to a new stadium with the memories of 86. He has had managerial experience unlike Willie. He can turn this around and he will also reprimand players for dogging it. Willie tried to change the passion of a player like Jose. He told him to tone it down. That was the wrong message. You have guys giving high fives to fans and you ask Jose to tone it down? Big mistake…….

    • Necciai27 says:

I think it was AAA. And the Dodgers were interested in hiring him as a bench coach when Jim Tracy’s staff went, but he refused because he wasn’t offered the managerial position outright. I think there was another team interested (Texas?), but he turned them off, too. You cannot have a prima donna as your manager, and that’s sadly what Carter has come off exactly as.

      • rivertech says:

I don’t think he’s a prima donna. Do you blame the guy? There are guys getting offers with no experience!! Here’s a guy who played with a bunch of misfits and won a championship. Look at Scioscia in LA? Catcher’s are great minds as they have a feel for the overall game. He wants a big league job and won’t settle for less. I like it and the kind of guy who will shake things up in the club house. You need those guys….I know Willie played with Reggie and those guys but…….i don’t see the passion in him. He might be trying to be Torre too much. This is a blue collar team and town. WE BLEED ORANGE. We need to go in another direction.

  463. MainStMets says:

its ok ian kennedy blows just gave up a missle to the upper deck in left down 4-0 vs the rays

  464. deloid says:

    You know-

The Mets are having problems right now but there were some great things about todays game. Wright and Beltran made gorgeous defensive plays.

I’m not trying to diminish the frustration everyone must feel but ye gads it’s just a game and the best teams in the American and National league are going through the exact same thing.

Cool the hot air you guys are blasting!

    There is no magic fix.

  465. MainStMets says:

wagner report on 1050 right now

  466. marvelousmarv says:

I wasn’t much for firing Willie, but its one of those changes that need to be made for the sake of making a change. I hate to say that cause i’m always against doing it, but how long can we wait till they change their ways. Its been like this since before the all-star break last year. The inconsistency is the only consistency and if we keep waiting for “something” to happen it might be $100 million dollars + too late.

Anyone hear the post game with Eddie C. What did he say?

    • MainStMets says:

said santana is a mr inviisible in the club house, feels this is more on the guy who put the roster together, commented on wagners remarks abt those who play should be at their lockers post game

    • Ceetar says:

I didn’t even get to “the ballgame is over” before i pulled the headphones out, never mind postgame.

I agree with your sentiments, but I think we’re still about 2 weeks away from a change for changes sake. We’re a long way away from ‘too late’ we’re right around the other ‘competitors’ in the east, and neither of those teams are great teams. It affords the Mets time to figure things out.

I think in terms of mid-season firing, you can only evaluate based on this season. You can’t fire Willie Randolph now for how Reyes played in September last year, or because Mota/Sosa/Bullpen blew a zillion games down the stretch.

      • marvelousmarv says:

Fair point, but the bullpen is on him too. How many times did he put guys in over and over and over again

      • dykstraw says:

jorge sosa came in last year @ miami with a three run lead to pitch to THREE GUYS who had career averages of OVER .500 against him

marlins tied the game, we lost in extras

  467. MainStMets says:

guys like dr jones really bring this board down to a grade school level in terms of maturity

  468. dr jones says:

I’m thinking tonight is the perfect time for a change. If they believe it is time then you should do in tonight and not wait till after the Subway series. If the Mets take 2 or 3 then it will give false hope to lost and divided club.

Its not like the Yankees are any good, The’ll be in last place by tonight. So even if they win,, its no big deal. Its time Omar,

    • metsfan119 says:

I’m in complete agreement over the “false hope.” I want the Mets swept. I hope they get embarrassed this weekend. I want turmoil, I want infighting, I want rock bottom.

      • dr jones says:

ohh I think we’ve already hit rock bottem.. Is there anything below that? cause thats were we are right now

        • metsfan119 says:

Oh, it can get worse, let’s not forget that this team is still over .500

        • blains2000 says:

Rock bottom? At 1 game over .500 in May? Really? Wow. So what are the Yankees? Or the Tigers?

        • metsfan119 says:

The Tigers and the Yankees didn’t have a historic collapse last season.

        • daga89 says:

Difference….. We the FANS are at rock bottom, the players and coaches…..just trying to be even keel, I dont think they are at rock bottom yet, were some fire and passion shows even if it means telling us the fans to shut the F* up. Ill take any kind of emotion that is not pity with them looking and acting like whipped puppies.

  469. Knuckles99 says:

Well, if you weren’t for firing Willie, I hope my posts have helped make an impression on you. First time poster. Always interested in the fans reactions. Read above and look for my insight. We need to all rally for change. Grass roots this running train!

    • 0h the ag0ny says:

why in the world are people defending willie’s win/loss record? …he had an imensily talented and confident team in 06, any manager could have held that ship…but now that the team needs a kick in the naggs , he doesnt cut it…..

his in game calls are horrible…
his post-game comments are even worse…
and his justification that ” i know my players and they’ll get it together soon” is beyond moronic when in fact they have been a bad team for a year.

  470. jimyager says:

REALITY CHECK!!! We are about to go 4-6 . THIS is NOT a good thing people. We drop 1 to the last place REDS and drop 3 to the last place NATS and we about to drop 2 to the 4th place YANKS> See a patern here?

  471. MainStMets says:

wagners comments on Michael Kay show werent too bad, basically said things are rough right now but were a tight group that picks each other up and thats what we will do with this

    • 0h the ag0ny says:

i hope no one picked willie up from the ground after waggs decked him…

  472. guierllNO MOta says:

every time i actually am about to jum pon the fire-willie bandwagon some idiot makes a post so outrageous that I find myself defending Willie based on nothing but just proving an idiot wrong….half the time its dr. jones.

I disagree with dykstraw on his feelings on willie but at least he makes lucid, valid points, dr jones you are the weakest link, goodbye….

see bobby v lovers i can have nostalgia for something that was way overrated 7 years ago too!!!

    • toomanyuniforms says:

      A “Weakest Link” reference!?!? Wow.

    • toomanyuniforms says:

Ah — sorry, man. Just caught that you caught yourself. ;)

    • dykstraw says:

well, agreed, there’s no point in just screaming and slamming the keyboard. at least when i do that i hit delete and the back button.

but there’s also no point to having an opinion just to be contrary to someone you don’t like. especially when in this case the other guy is just words on a screen.

believe me, my opinion on willie or anyone else has nothing to do what anyone here thinks – unless someone makes a good argument that changes my mind.

      • daga89 says:

or to just be contrary……thats Skip Bayless’s job (and the only thing he can do by my count)

  473. gipper82475 says:

The Wilpons should pay every Mets fans’ co-pays on their anti-depressant meds. This is out of hand.

    • rivertech says:

Its not that dude……be smart here. The passion and gamer mentality is not there anymore. They are loafing right now and a shakeup needs to happen.

  474. metsfan119 says:

Since last June watching the Mets has been like visiting the dentist.

  475. Knuckles99 says:

Gipper. Don’t be depressed. That is not the right attitude. Be angry. Passionate. Seek change. The characteristics that none of these players has. We should stage a revolt. What should have happened after last season, will need to take place after this weekend. This Yank/Mets thing is fun. Meaningless. Willie goes either way.

    • gipper82475 says:

I’ve been angry and passionate. I’ve seeked change. Wnated change after The Collapse. Hopefully it will still come.

Still, I am less than confident that it will ultimately alter the overall trajectory of this club. I was eleven years old for the last championship. I’d like to see another one in my lifetime. Right now, it’s just depressing. When the Mets had crappy teams in the 90s, early 80s, etc, i couldbe sanguine. But to spoil a talented team is just such a waste.

  476. dr jones says:

statements all made by guierIINO MOta today,, this guy’s statements speak for themselves..

Brother,, sorry but you really don’t know what your talking about.. and when numerous people constantly tell you that you don’t know what your talking about.. maybe its time to reflect a bit. Your lost.

“hey hey ho ho….hojo has got to go….we cant lose 1-0 to jason bergmann and have him keep his job….somehow a lot of you will blame Willie here, but he got Pelf to do his thing this whole season has been about lack of hitting….see ya Hojo.”
“the prob with a handful of posters on this site is that while most of the willie-haters turned that way in August 2007 (or maybe even june or july) you have been that way since 2005…”

“To me…if Willie goes, wait till the end of the year and try and bring Acta back…as you can see when we let a gret baseball mind go to the Nats/Expos”

“eople are so used to playing fantasy and video games that they forget how real baseball moves (players & coaches) work.”

“HE ONLY “CONSTANT REMINDER” OF 2007 COLLAPSE ARE THE MORONS ON THIS SITE WHO BRING IT UP EVERY SINGLE DAY IN THE MESSAGE BOARDS, THE PLAYERS DONT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT….IM WAITING FOR ONE SMART GUY TO WRITE HOW JOHAN FOCUSES ON 2007 EVERY TIME HE LOSES…RIDICULOUS”

“Bobby V was a horrible manager and cost us 5 of the 6 years he was here with his nonsensical moves, sitting players who were hot and making way to many changes, his players hated him and if it wasnt for 2000 he woulda been fired no later than 01, get this nostalgia out of your head

In 5 years we will all be remembering Art Howe as a savior too I guess”

    • marvelousmarv says:

No comment. That Johan comment makes no sense…

    • dykstraw says:

you guys both need to calm down, this isn’t fight club

      • gipper82475 says:

Seriously, save the hatred for the right targets: Willie and his underperforming team.

        • Knuckles99 says:

We are all Mets fans. I agree. We are always quickest to point fingers and say, “well I am more loyal”, “I am a better Mets fan”, “I never boo”. Let’s target the people who really are the cause. The players and managers. For one thing, nobody in their right mind would be a Mets fan for the sake of saying so.

  477. Anybody remember when last year in July, a guy from Queens killed his mother following a Mets loss to the Nats?
I hope no one here has that type of anger.

  478. 0h the ag0ny says:

    problem i have? …
the whole game..all i saw was smiles laughing, lack of hustle, and some nice conversations in the dugout…

did anyone notice when delgado hit his groundout BIG SMILE
when reyes got caught at 3rd BIG SMILE and a “eh” look
beltran when doubled off…jogged off like nothing happened not even a reaction!
WHEN THE FRIGGIN INFIELD HUDDLED AROUND PELF WHEN HE WAS TAKIN OUT …THE KID WAS PISSED AND YET EVERYIONE ONE AROUND HIM, WHO BTW DIDNT EVEN SCORE A FRIGGIN RUN FOR HIm!!!! ALL SMILES…

the philles yesterday …were livid when they couldnt scratch out those last few runs… the marlins…. HEART got them 6 runs back in the 9th !

THE FRIIGGGINNN NATIONALS walked all over us WITH swagger…because they know we’re flat and lifeless…

with the exception of church, schneider, smith, and waggs….just a plain flat team with no heart or drive for success.

leyland? no picthing is why the tigers are where they are and thats not on him… GREAT manager. Willie has a little bit of everything. and he doesnt push for more. this team has no drive and IM SORRY FOR YOU PEOPLE DEFENDING HIM…but that my friends is on WILLIE

  479. rivertech says:

Mets are a bunch of lifeless, gutless wonders right now. They lack energy, passion and that is the manager. He took away any fight they had left by telling players to tone it down. BIG MISTAKE WILLIE. You took the drive out of your team. When you lost the team it becomes an issue. Bring back the Boys of 86….

Mets don’t even do the fundamental things on the field anymore. It’s a shame.

  480. daga89 says:

I do think Willie has lost the team and unless some players are going to man-up and say and show some fight, he will have to go to change the attitude.

But thats the tough part of baseball, passion is good, pressing is bad and makes things worse….. the key is to be confident and passionate and I think those are traits that you have or dont, not ones you can adopt or learn.

It also doesnt seem that Omar looked at competitiveness in the people he was adding vs them being productive….once and of course being Latin seemed to be a priority as well. How did we get the non fiery latin ballplayers?????

    • therealsince86 says:

I agreed with the first part of your comment until you put in the race issue.

  481. daga89 says:

I would also love to see the media assign some spanish speaking writers every now and then to cut off that excuse that some of the players are hiding behind vs owning up to thier dismal performances.

  482. deloid says:

Matt Holliday led the Colorado Rockies to their first World Series last season, finishing second in the National League MVP balloting.

    Matt Holliday: Career stats
    Matt Holliday

    2008 37 47 .318 6 21 27

But Holliday, an All-Star left fielder, might not be in Colorado much longer if the Rockies do not revive soon.

The Rockies, 10 games back in the NL West, almost certainly would consider trading Holliday, knowing they stand little chance of keeping him long-term.

    • deloid says:

      From MLB trade rumors:

Rosenthal’s Latest: Rockies Could Trade Holliday

In Ken Rosenthal’s latest column, he sees Matt Holliday as a prime candidate to be traded this summer. Rosenthal notes that the Rockies are already 10 games back and have very little chance of signing Holliday to an extension. Holliday is signed through ‘09 with $13MM due next season.

  483. deloid says:

If the Rockies continue to fall then it is an option with the Mets if only because of the Mets ability to meet his request for a 4 year contract after ‘09. Not many teams can pay like the Mets and Yankees.

Chips? yeah…if we totally depleted our farm then we could do it. We could even throw in Heilman as an extra!

    • Mex_17 says:

Our farm is already depleted. I believe that only Pittsburgh had a worse-rated system based on Baseball America.

In other words, if you don’t like the 2008 Mets, there is nothing good on the horizon.
