By Mike Nichols - May 15, 2008 10:26 am

Over at SNY.tv our very own Matthew Cerrone from MetsBlog and Steve Lombardi, who writes the very informative Yankees blog WasWatching, which is part of the SNY.tv blog Network, go head-to-head and debate this weekend’s Subway Series between the Mets and Yankees.

Each give their reasons on how their team will win this weekend’s showdown.

Cerrone believes the Mets pitching staff will be the determining factor in the Mets ability to take two of three versus the Yankees, but thinks the Mets have more to lose this weekend than their crosstown rival, writing…

The thing is, and what worries me, is that I believe the Mets have far more to lose this weekend by being embarrassed by the Yankees, than the Yankees have to lose by being embarrassed by the Mets. The expectations for the Mets coming in to this season were much higher than for the Yankees, and so – for the first time in a long while – there may actually be more pressure on the Mets.”

Lombardi also believes pitching is the Yankees key to winning the series, however history is on their side, writing…

Since 1997, the Mets have come into Yankee Stadium 10 times during the regular season (prior to this series). And, in only one of those ten visits have the Mets ever taken two of three games from the Yankees (2005). In the other three game sets, the Yankees have taken two of the three games eight times and swept the Mets once (in 2003).”

Yankee fans always go back to history… This is a very different team than has occupied that building in quite some time…

This is a huge series for the Mets… Even moreso if they lose today… It may be a determining factor in whether a change will be made at the top…

I’m confused…the Mets won two out of three against the Yankees at Yankee stadium last year(May 18 & 19, lost on the 20th.) So is this just a typing error or does is that stat just wrong?

    • metsfan227 says:

Okay..did my own research. They lost two out of three in 2005, so I guess it’s just a typo.

      • mrose says:

didn’t do very good research though, lol
They won 2 out of 3 in 2005, I was at the sunday night game in Yankee stadium they lost. They lost 2 of 3 at home that year too
Then in 2006 and 2007 they won 2/3 at home and lost 2/3 on the road

        • metsfan227 says:

Huh…on MLB. com’s yearly schedule thing it says the Mets Lost on Friday, May 20, 2005, Won on Saturday, May 21, 2005 and Lost on Sunday, May 22, 2005.

Are you saying they have it wrong?

        • metsfan227 says:

Oops..you’re right…I mixed up the at Shea and at Yankee stadium. So, I guess the stat is wrong about the Mets only having won two out of three once.

        • metsfan227 says:

Clearly, I need more coffee or something because I see that I also mixed up the home and away for last year so, seriously, just ignore me…..

    • Mets Fan on Wall St. says:

The 1st series last year was at Shea. Pitcher’s duel in the 1st game (Endy gunning down Damon to start the game and then hitting a HR), a blow out through most of the 2nd (two Wright bombs) and the 3rd game we get shut down by a no-name call up.

  3. Mets Fan on Wall St. says:

No ARod, no Posada, an even bigger blackhole at 1B.

We have the advantage in starting pitching on Friday and depending on which Ollie shows up, on Saturday. Sunday’s game will be the most intriguing.

As bad as Heilman is for us, they have similar volatile relievers like Farnsworth and LaTroy Hawkins. If our offense kicks it into gear then I think we have a good chance of 2 out of 3.

    • stellar says:

“…an even bigger blackhole at 1B.”

      Giambi 2008 OPS: .807
      Delgado 2008 OPS: .689

      • Mets Fan on Wall St. says:

How about Giambi’s nearly 50 pts lower BA? I’m not saying Delgado is heads and shoulders above Giambi, but unless Giambi is hitting HRs or XBHs, he has trouble getting on safely.

        • Metsfan1981 says:

Well, Giambi is also very good at drawing walks, which is why his OBP is .351 despite his .BA being .188. So his OPS, which is significantly higher than Delgado’s, is a product not only of his better slugging percentage, but also the fact that he is much better than Delgado at drawing walks. IMO, while Giambi’s BA is not good at all, his superior OPS is a much better indication of his offensive value (contract aside).

  4. AndrewP says:

Even as banged up as they are, the Yankees are a better team than the Nationals…

  5. SantanaCYYOung says:

if the mets win today, history (this year) shows that they will lose tomorrow, win saturday, and lose sunday…just saying that’s been the trend and don’t see it changing much

  6. wesdp1988 says:

Were takin two of three… we got santana , perez, and maine goin out there. I can see tight couple of runs type of games and Wagner being the difference.

    • atlantasnumberonemetsfan says:

I have to agree, We’re not exactly seeing the Meat of the Yanx pitching staff…If we don’t take 2 of 3 then i think there will definitely be movement towards a change at the top. Omar said the end of May, The last third of May starts Tuesday

  7. wesdp1988 says:

THIS IS THE ONLY REASON I LIKE INTERLEAGUE PLAY…… BEAT THE YANKS!

  8. beltran the warrior says:

honestly, does this even matter anymore. both teams are maddeningly inconsistent. the subway series has long lost its lustre.

    • gomets6091 says:

I personally haven’t cared about a regular season subway series since the 2000 World Series

  9. dave27 says:

The expectations for the Yankees were lower than the Mets? That’s some revisionist history if I’ve ever heard it.

Every Yankee fan I’ve heard was too busy handicapping the rookie of the year race between joba, kennedy, and hughes to ever consider realistic expectations…but a few flameouts and injuries and they are fashioning themselves the underdog again.

$207MM payroll vs. $137MM. I don’t think your expectations were “lower.”

  10. metsfan119 says:

It’s sad, but I almost hope the Mets get crushed in this series feeling that the long-term prospects for this team would be so much better with Willie gone.

    • mrose says:

wow, if you hope that, you aren’t really a mets fan are ya?

      • mrose says:

let me add in here… I think rooting against your team lets say, at the end of the year to get better draft position when you already suck, in football, basketball or hockey whatever..but its MAY dude MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY

  11. shea_guevara says:

I wouldn’t say there are “no expectations” with this Yankee team. Injuries or not, their fans are not happy with how the team has played so far–not to the extent that Mets fans are angry with their team, but a sub-.500 record does not make happy Yankee fans.

I would say that the pressure is on the Yanks just as much as it is on the Mets for this series, although it is lessened somewhat if they win today and earn a split in their series with the Rays, and go into the weekend at .500.

Then again, if the Mets lose today, that puts them in the “must win” mindset over the weekend, so who the hell knows?

  12. mrmustseetv says:

The problem is that the Subway Series is oversaturated. 6 games a year is too much. They should simply play 3 games a year and alternate at each other’s stadiums.

In the long run it hurts both teams’ season goals. Both teams concentrate so much on beating up on each other for 6 games that they, at times, rearrange pitching staffs, have guys play hurt – all because they can’t lose to the other team. In the long run, it hurts both teams.

  13. reyesnwright says:

I’m worried about the Yankees calling the game on Friday due to the slightest bit of rain. It is supposed to rain most of the day and I could see them calling it very early to get out of the Santana Rasner matchup we have. If this happens, we go from having a huge pitching advantage in game 1 and about even for the next 2 games to having an advantage in game one (Santana v Pettite) and a disadvantage in game 2 (Wang v Perez).

    • General Millz says:

Wang vs. Perez turned out just fine on a beautiful evening at Shea Stadium last year… one of the best pitchers duels I’ve ever seen in person, and the Mets won thanks to Endy.

      • dave27 says:

It was Pettitte. The Mets have never seen Wang…a good thing since they are allergic to sinkerballers.

I will be happy to get a hit off him Sunday.

        • Volume11 says:

The Mets saw Wang last season in the last game of the SS at Yankee stadium. EL Duque pitched and got rocked and Wang dominated.

  14. cyclone says:

zzzz the subway series bores me. They beat us when it counted, that’s all I remember. All the subway series since then have been sideshows…

    • Volume11 says:

Yeah, totally….who wants to see cross town rivals compete on national stage when we can play the Nats another 1800 times a season…I’ll take interleague play any day than the overloaded division games we’re forced to watch….If I have to watch another Braves/Mets game Im going to puke.

  15. METS62FAN says:

DIDN’Y ANY OF YOU SEE LAST YEAR’S COLLAPSE? EVEN IF THE YANKS MAKE METS LOOK LIKE CUSTER @ THE BIG HORN. HE DOESN’T GET AXED. THERE’S NO VOLOTILITY IN OWNERSHIP TO PUCH THEM TO EAT ANOTHER MNGR CONTRACT. JUST REMEMBER HOW MANY PROMISES PHILLIPS BROKE & $$$ WASTED. IT TOOK YEARS. THE ONLY WAY, IN MY OPINION, WILLIE GETS AXED IS IF A CONTINGENT OF PLAYERS LED BY SANTANA, WAGNER & WRIGHT ADVISE JEFF W. THAT WILLIE’S LOST THE TEAM. ENOUGH OF THIS LOW GOAL SETTING 2 OF 3? I WANT A MIRACULOUS SWEEP!

  16. METS62FAN says:

I WOULD THINK BY NOW AFTER THE NUMEROUS POSTS I’VE MADE I WOULDN’T HAVE TO EXPLAIN THAT CAPSLOCK IS REQ TO ENABLE ME TO DEAL WITH A LH DIABLED BY STROKE. SO TO THOSE INTOLERATE CHILDREN CLAIMING EYE PAIN, THERE’S MUCH WORSE IN LIFE SO DEAL WITHY IT! I’VE LEARNED TO! FOCUSING ON CONTEXT IS MUCH MORE CONSTRUCTIVE THAN CREATING CRITICISM AND PHONY AOILMENTS. UNLESS THE POSTER IS PAVANO UNDER DISGUISE.
