News: Torrealba v. Mets

by Matthew Cerrone

According to the Denver Post, Rockies C Yorvit Torrealba’s agent has filed a grievance against the Mets regarding contract negotiations from last November.

…fine, whatever…what is more interesting to me from this article is news that Rockies OF Matt Holliday could be traded if the team keeps losing or if a contract is not worked out

Tidewater May 16, 2008 at 11:21 am

Too bad we have nothing of value to trade for him.

MetsfanMiamiJM May 16, 2008 at 11:24 am

I’ll give up Reyes for Holliday right now !!!

statnut May 16, 2008 at 11:41 am

The Rockies have Tulowitzki at SS, why would they want Reyes?

m00kie May 16, 2008 at 11:55 am

tulowitzki started out terrible, then got hurt, and is out right now.

toomanyuniforms May 16, 2008 at 12:01 pm

Beltran for Holliday. I’d do it yesterday.

Mets Fan on Wall St. May 16, 2008 at 11:24 am

Is it because Holliday doesn’t like the Denver school system?

Santanaman May 16, 2008 at 11:30 am

Can’t pay him enough. This guy would be sick in LF for us the next 6 years.

ravi3 May 16, 2008 at 11:25 am

By the way…Imagine how much worse off the team would be if we did end up with Torrealba….Church has been the MVP thus far, and Schneider is one of our best hitters this season so far.

Dirtysanchez May 16, 2008 at 11:27 am

Yea so far good gut check by omar for backing outta that one..All the pitchers have expressed how well schnieder is behind the plate…

dwright012 May 16, 2008 at 11:27 am

Kinda like how good we’d be if we still had Bannister, Bell, and Lindstrom?

Xavier22 May 16, 2008 at 11:44 am

Or how bad “we’d” be if Omar overpaid for Zito.

See? You can play this game forever.

Fact is, net-net, Omar is a pretty good GM. It’s Willie that needs to go.

blains2000 May 16, 2008 at 12:17 pm

Or if we still had Kris Benson. Anna’s a different story.

Dirtysanchez May 16, 2008 at 12:34 pm

anna……………..good times…………

Dirtysanchez May 16, 2008 at 11:46 am

How do you know brian would have the same success in ny that he had in KC?

Church May 16, 2008 at 12:07 pm

Its automatic. – sarcasm

adropofvenom May 16, 2008 at 11:36 am

It’s hard to play that game because you don’t know what would have happened then…I’d argue that perhaps they still trade Milledge for Church and someone else then. Maybe a reliever like Saul Rivera (As Rauch or Cordero would have probably been Off-Limits)

Or if instead of signing Castillo (Who while he was signed first, I’d think the Mets had preliminary talks regarding the Church trade before they actually signed Castillo) they traded for someone like Felipe Lopez.

Anyways, just some food for thought.

ravi3 May 16, 2008 at 11:45 am

Thats true…I guess its just that the assumption is that the impetus for the Milledge trade was to bring in Schneider, but that wasn’t a good trade straight up, leading to Church being included.

shea_guevara May 16, 2008 at 11:29 am

Even if they do continue to scuffle, why would the Rockies trade Holliday? He’s still young and under a reasonable contract. Is he that unhappy out there?

I’d think it more likely they’d trade an older, more expensive guy like Todd Helton, if anyone.

DB-Mets May 16, 2008 at 11:32 am

Nones gonna want Helton though. Holiday would be perfect in left field but as someone said above, nothing to trade. I’d actually consider trading reyes for holiday right now.

backinbusiness May 16, 2008 at 11:33 am

and playing who at short, exactly?

dave27 May 16, 2008 at 11:38 am

Exactly…I love how little attention anyone pays to Reyes’s gold glove-caliber defense or the fact that even if he does not become a perpetual superstar he’s still got more offensive value than all but 3-4 shortstops in the game on his bad days.

I’d give up FMart for Holliday. Again, the best FMart could probably be is as good as Holliday. You don’t think the Rockies would go for a dwal with him?

How about this…Holliday and Helton for Delgado, FMart, and whatever else they need to get it done. Salary relief for them at 1B and a blue-chip replacement for Holliday.

Santanaman May 16, 2008 at 11:42 am

Nice, I like it

ExileInLA May 16, 2008 at 11:58 am

“Reyes’s gold glove-caliber defense”?

Do you exclude when he stands around not making relays in that?

blains2000 May 16, 2008 at 12:19 pm

True he has the occaisional brain fart but he makes plays that Hanley Ramirez and guy in the bronx can only dream of making.

statnut May 16, 2008 at 11:40 am

Holliday is a FA after 2009.

And frankly, I’d love Helton in a Mets uniform right now. Too bad he has a no trade clause cause Delgado plus a B level prospect for Helton would sure be nice.

dave27 May 16, 2008 at 11:30 am

I’d take Todd Helton’s deal in a second if they want to take Delgado off our hands. Certainly pays out for them financially.

DK May 16, 2008 at 11:40 am

no way… lets just endure delgado for this season…

Helton contract is going to tie us up for a long time…

06-10:$16.6M/year, 11:$19.1M, 12:$23M club option ($4.6M buyout)

dave27 May 16, 2008 at 11:57 am

But we’re all about taking on 4 year deal where we only get one good year…see Pedro, Delgado…and hopefully we get at least that for Castillo.

Santanaman May 16, 2008 at 11:32 am

I’ve read several places today that the Rox are entertaining the thought of moving Holliday. They may wait for the off season as value and interest is expected to peak.

Metsnumba57 May 16, 2008 at 11:37 am

I got it. Heilman and Pagan/Alou for Holliday lol

BKphan May 16, 2008 at 11:38 am

“fine, whatever”? If you don’t care for the story, then don’t post it. Or can no one say anything negative about the Mets, except for Wagner?

sheaheykid May 16, 2008 at 11:44 am

I think Matt’s thoughts are preoccupied with the on field happenings of this club, and not the back office crap. Still, he’s a professional who feels obligated to make his reader’s privy to such news.

getupkids026 May 16, 2008 at 11:59 am

it’s his blog, he do whatever he wants.

cyclone May 16, 2008 at 12:11 pm

Or Matt could just be expressing what most fans think with regard to Torrealba’s agent filing a ridiculous grievance against the Mets that he really has no shot of winning. It’s not the Mets fault they saw something in his physical they didn’t like and decided to back out…blame your client.

LongJohnMaine May 16, 2008 at 11:39 am

I like that Iannetta is basically playing every day. Torrealba is such a bum.

AlreadyMissShea May 16, 2008 at 11:40 am

“Rockies OF Matt Holliday could be traded if the team keeps losing or if a contract is not worked out”

Well for his sake, I hope he gets to take Coors Field with him.

LongJohnMaine May 16, 2008 at 11:42 am

No Tulo till July, a slumping Francis, a regressing Morales/Jimenez, a declining Helton…amazing this team went to the WS last year, I’d pencil them in for 75 wins give or take

tomterif May 16, 2008 at 11:43 am

Trade Beltran for Halliday and move Church to center.

sheaheykid May 16, 2008 at 11:44 am

that’d be awesome

Santanaman May 16, 2008 at 11:45 am

Same $ problem for Rox but I like that as well

I_Need_More_Cowbell_Please May 16, 2008 at 11:46 am

why would they trade a guy with a potential big contract for a guy already has a big contract?

Santanaman May 16, 2008 at 11:48 am

Maybe if we eat some of Beltran’s $

krumbledkookie May 16, 2008 at 11:50 am

I like Holliday, but that would be silly. People forget what Beltran means to this team as on overall player.

Santanaman May 16, 2008 at 11:51 am

Well, it’s clear that this team needs a kick in the whatchamacallits, what would be your suggestion?

krumbledkookie May 16, 2008 at 11:56 am

The on-field talent is there – the rest is not. That points to one thing – Fire Willie and find someone that can motivate these guys and get outta them what we all know is there.

Santanaman May 16, 2008 at 11:57 am

Agree, let’s do that. After the season is over, then perhaps it would be a good time to review the talent

I_Need_More_Cowbell_Please May 16, 2008 at 11:52 am

beltran is the least bit of this team’s problem

Dirtysanchez May 16, 2008 at 11:57 am

Ive never really seen holliday play defense. I love the way beltran covers CF. Great speed and gets a good read on balls. I love church but id rather him stay where he is at, i doubt he can cover as much ground as beltran. Id pass on this deal….

Gasface77 May 16, 2008 at 12:02 pm

Beltran is the best centerfielder in baseball right now. You can talk to me about Jones, Hunter, blah blah blah. I watch Beltran everyday and he is better than all of them.

appleinahat May 16, 2008 at 11:58 am

I would love to see Holiday as a Met, but I have to assume that the Rox have no interest in Alou, so say the Mets worked out some sort of deal, where does Holiday play with Alou in left (when healthy)? I don’t see Beltran moving to the Rox since he costs so much, and Church has been too valuable to move.

Mingo May 16, 2008 at 12:06 pm

I’ve heard that Brian Fuentes could be on the block for a lower level (Class A) high ceiling prospect because the Rockies have plenty of prospects at AA and AAA.
I would rather see that and move Heilman to the minors since he has options left.

theperfectgame May 16, 2008 at 12:17 pm

Do we have any lower level high ceiling prospects left? Francisco Pena is a bit of a stretch…

therealsince86 May 16, 2008 at 12:14 pm

According to MLBtraderumors the Rockies don’t even want MLB ready talent for Holiday. How about Fmart, Neise, Heilman and a prospect for Holliday and Fuentes?
Works for them to get a guy that can start for them now, another that can next year and then a high celling prospect in Fmart?
As for Helton, I am not sure you want those last 2-3 years of that contract.

wnymetsfan May 16, 2008 at 12:53 pm

No way you give FMart for a guy who has much better stats at home than on the road for his career which has spanned 5 years.

Home
2b 89
3B 16
HR 73
Avg .364
OBP .426
SLG .664
OPS 1.090

Away
2B 72
3B 7
HR 36
Avg .274
OBP .336
SLG .444
OPS .780

Big time drop in power away from the statbloating park they call Coors Field. Based on what I have heard and seen on video of FMart he will be much better than Holliday if the park factor was neutral. As a reference forhis career Luis Castillo has a slugging of .365 at home and .346 on the road and this is a guy who played in a huge park and has not power even if he played in Coors and he is only 80 points behind Holliday’s road slugging.
