News: Willie and Players before the Game
By Matthew Cerrone - May 16, 2008 6:48 pm

Prior to tonight’s game, Mets GM Omar Minaya was asked if Willie Randolph is in ‘danger of losing his job,’ to which he responded, “No,” adding, “I’m very supportive – and continue to be supportive – of Willie Randolph.”

Meanwhile, Randolph told reporters that he called this afternoon’s team meeting, because he is disappointed with how the team has been playing.  According to Randolph, the team’s lack of consistent hitting continues to be their biggest problem, however, he has confidence that they’ll get better.

At the same time, David Wright told SNY that there are no issues in the team’s clubhouse, while Billy Wagner told reporters that he in no way meant to single out Carlos Delgado when suggesting that other players should have stepped up and talked with media after yesterday’s game.

Lastly, Delgado stood in front of his locker and told reporters that the meeting was good, as it allowed for the opportunity to address a few items that needed to be discussed.

…jeez, man…team meetings…interviews with WFANKevin Burkhardt and SNY are doing on-air, one-on-ones with more or less every one, it seems…and they’re all basically regurgitating the same talking points, i.e., no worries, every one is cool, players will talk but reporters need to get to them with questions, etc…i love good messaging…nice work, media department…

I’ll believe it when I see it.

Less talk, more winning.

It’s like having a spin room on the Titanic.

“What a wonderful chance to see the beauty of an iceberg close-up.”

“Those engines going full steam were so noisy. now we can enjoy the stillness and quiet of being at sea at night.”

All wee need is a quartet playing upbeat music in the clubhouse to complete the scene.

It’s for the best. Last thing we needed was someone going out and getting hurt after all of the other chaos today.

Just another day to go by for “Team Entitlement” to raitonalize everyhting is OK. Today on the FAN Gerardi says he has a sense of urgency and doesn’t let his team think they play better soon. Before Willies says, he’s not worried because the team will play better soon. We need a sense of urgency!

The Kiss of Death. (lol)

In light of all the “Kill Willie” talk, especially here, I think it’s time for people to step back and take a deep breath and chill just a bit. Allow me to take a look at the glass half-full:

We are just 6 weeks into the season and despite a recent downswing, we’re still above .500 (1) without Pedro; (2) with Beltran and Delgado hitting below (well below?) expectations; (3) with Castillo still recuperating; (4) with Heilman just pitching the worst ball he’s ever pitched over a period of time; and, last but not least, (5) with Jose Reyes being as inconsistent as a human spark plug could be. I’m sure, you guys could come up with more.

Does anybody remember last year? (Of course, you do, because y’all haven’t stopped talking about it!) The Phillies started off much worse than us last year, and looked what happened. THE SEASON IS 162 FREAKING GAMES!

Relax. Let’s see where we are by the All-Star break. If we’re having the same problems at that time, then Omar will be looking to swing some major deal for a thumper and some bullpen help.

The “Kiss of Death” referred to the following quote from Omar (we need a “Preview” button on the site, more options on lettering AND emoticon options):

I am not a Willie basher and have not repeatedly called for his dismissal. Based on what I have read about him he appears to be a fine and likeable individual and I had hoped he would have been successful with this team. But this club is 74-75 over the past 149 games. That is the sample size we are using. Media types, including beat reporters, that in the past supported Willie and still like him are changing their stance and giving valid reasons for doing so. Willie will be paid handsomely for the remainder of his contract whether he is retained or let go so if that’s keeping you awake at night worry not for Willie be fine. He might even get a coaching job with his only true love, The New York Yankees.

I just got a laugh out of this article in today’s Newsday (5/16). For those of you in various states other than NY, here is a reprint, ” Carlos Delgado vs. Jason Giambi. You know how, in basketball practices, the coach won’t let the players leave until everyone hits a foul shot? Imagine if Joe Girardi or Willie Randolph said, ‘No one goes home until Giambi/Delgado throws accurately from first base to second base! “

I heard Willie said (in reference to this weekend’s series) that Yankee Stadium is still his favorite park to play in. WTF? Why - WHY would the figure head of the team say such a thing amidst such turmoil. Williot is the Scarecrow searching for a brain - that much is obvious.

The season is going to get turned around tomorrow. This may actually have united the clubhouse… I’m starting to think that this team may have something in common with the NY Giants run. In the beginning of the year after their bad start everyone wanted to get rid of Coughlin and Eli. Similar to how everyone wanted to get rid of Willie and a lot of met players.
Well tomorrow is going to be our equivlent of the Giants game against the Washington Redskins when they turned the entire season around!

I’m trying REAL hard to stay confident! LETS GO METS LETS TURN THIS AROUND!

Why do Willie’s soundbites remind me more and more of a Rich Kotite press conference?

“We played hard…. We left it all on the field…. We didn’t lose, the other team just scored more point than us….”

Duh!

This organization gets worse every day. They make Wags apologize to that piece of crap. Omar and Willie come out with statements that make me think that they think fans are idiots. Maybe we are for following this team but everyday they drive me just a little further away and I’ve follwed this team from the first day but they make it very hard to keep supporting this bunch of overpaid, overhyped boring losers.

Oh and by the way, Willie I listened to your interview with WFAN. Exactly what game are you watching? You, animated? Yeah right, you do an amazing impersonation of a cigar store indian every night. Have you ever been thrown out of a game in your life? Just once I would like to see someone on this team or coaching staff get out their coma long enough to fog a mirror. The only guys who show any emotion at all like Wagner and Lo Duca last year get beat down and criticized for pointing out that the emperor has no clothes. It’s OK for Castillo to not run a ball out because “he probably wouldn’t have scored anyway”, but it’s wrong for someone to acknowledge that Delgado doesn’t try and doesn’t care that he stinks? Maybe Mookie shouldn’t have run to first base because Buckner probably would have caught that ball and made the out anyway….

good point, maybe Knight shouldn’t have run so hard either!!

I have been demanding that wright and castillo sit out a game for not running on that ball. Jose was yanked from the game and benched the next day for the same thing! where is the consistency? what message is being sent to this team??

Getting yourself thrown out of a game is overrated. Willie is more of a “Gil Hodges” type. I happen to like him.

You guys are all panicking. It’s way too early to panic. I’m not saying that things don’t need to change or that Omar isn’t going to have to look at getting us a first baseman (I think Delgado is done) and some bullpen help at the deadline.

I think Reyes and Beltran will hit. Church and Schneider have been outstanding - much better than we could have imagined. Santana is the real deal. Maine is going to win 16-18 games. Wagner is back to being overpowering (but I have to see it in September and the playoffs). We’re not getting any production out of the bench so far this year. Endy has not been Endy. Easley is clearly a liability on the field and he’s been very mediocre at the plate.

give me a break!!! a Gil hodges type.. please man,, I really would like to know the similarities between the two of them. Gil Hodges was a championship manager.. What championship did Willie bring the mets? I find that comparison insulting as a Mets fan. Please explain that..

look willie cant go out and hold these guys hands everytime they get up to bat they have to do it themselves he cant be responsable for there crappy hitting .However willie is responsable for the ball pen moves and deffenatly has to know when a member of that pen does not have his good stuff.
When you look at the games lost due to the ballpen moves vs the bad hittig in key at bats the hitting cost way more games then the pen.Leave willie alone cause there isnt anybody out there thats going to do a better job .When the year is over the wilpons will see that omar is to blame for not seeing that the yohan deal was not the only big thing that the team needed .Then and only then will this team move in the right direction old vets accent a team the can not be the driving force of a team .Willie would be better suited with young players .

I’m not saying that Willie has to be Bobby Cox and get thrown out of everygame, but their has to be some level of urgency and passion. On the rare occasion that Willie drags his behind of the bench and lumbers onto the field following a close or questionable call, when he finally gets to the umpire he looks like he’s asking the guy directions to the nearest subway station not arguing with him over the issue at hand. That calm cool and collected demeanor may work when you have a resume (AS A MANAGER) to back it up, but when you are a first time manager who has done nothing in your tenure other than sit in the dugout and observe the worst collapse in professional sports history without lifting a finger, you can’t just say “hey I’m Willie Randolph” and expect to command respect.

I agree with metsgo that this situation is not all Willie’s fault. In fact I think it is 99% Omar’s fault for not addressing the fact that this team hasn’t had a clutch hitter since John Olerud. This is not Monday morning quarterbacking, because when they got Santana, the first thing I said was great we can watch him throw a two hitter and lose 1-0 when Delgado hits into a double play with RISP to end the game. Omar has made no attemt to improve the offense during his time here. That being said, Willie was dealt this lousy hand and it is his job to get the most of these guys. Instead he sends mixed messages by calling out some guys like Reyes, Pagan and Perez and lets his fellow AARP cardholders like Castillo, Delgado and Alou drift along unresponsible for their inability to perform. Unfortunately I don’t think Willie is the guy for a team of young players, so when they get wise and blow this team up and restart with a core of Reyes, Wright and possibly Church (looking good but ne
