Wally Backman would automatically command the kind of respect from the current Mets players that Willie has not been able to get. Thes Met team is not worried about their manager coming down hard on them a la Lou Piniella, therefore, some of the players (Delgado, Beltran, etc.) are just coasting through their at bats. Watching Delgado wing reminds me of an old timers' game.

Bringing Wally to the Mets would bring the energy needed in the Mets dugout. If Wally is not Wallie's replacement, Minaya and the Mets ownership must make sure to hire a manager with the same fire, intensity and baseball leadership skills that Backman has.

LOL...I knew you'd back him no matter what. A contractual obligation to go sign autographs. Hate to tell you but those are easily broken and have been many times. It maynot have been a big deal to the owners of that ballclub as they wanted a name as their manager, but it would be to the players who would hope their manager was there to back them. It wasnt like he was missing due to an illness. As a player I'd look at it as he was more interested in padding his pockets than managing my team. I dont care what level the ball is, I as a player wouldnt respect him. I maybe forced to play under him but that doesnt mean I have to respect him. As for your hope that he gets at least a minor league job, who would hire him when he cant give his full commitment to even such a small ballclub? Especially when he has to reprove himself.

A bit off-topic here but the guy responsible for producing the "Playing for Peanuts" TV series, also did the documentary "The Emerald Diamond" about a small group of baseball lovers living in Ireland whose love of baseball inspired them to start playing baseball (many or most with no previous experience) in a country that obviously does not play baseball. It's a good documentary that shows what it is to love the game, with players who play it because they are passionate about it, and not for any money. They even get to the point where they enter the European Baseball Championship (yes there is such a thing remarkably). Funny at times and somewhat inspiring. And yes, available from Netflix......
