By Matthew Cerrone - May 18, 2008 10:25 am

In the New York Post, Steve Serby conducts a Q&A with Ryan Church, during which they discuss his brother fighting in Iraq; playing in New York; superstitions; his boyhood idol, Will Clark; his favorite band; and playing the game like ‘it’s supposed to be played,’ among other things.

this guy was absolute steal. Hey Mets how about printing up some Church and Maine jerseys!

    • egnirc says:

I had a Maine jersey made up myself on the black away last year. (bought the lettering kit off ebay) Looks like I may have to do that for Church if they don’t get on the ball already.

i allready got my maine jersey last year. there r church and main jersey’s on ebay

    • gipper82475 says:

You can easily get them on MLB.com’s store website.

      • egnirc says:

Not rich enough to buy a 300$ shirt.
Waiting for Modells to make their 79$ Replica with Authentic number and names.

This Guy needs a nickname, I have idea what to call him. I’ve been going with “The Pope” but i want something better.

  2. What a great pickup!

He confirmed what I’ve heard before — that Acta is a quiet, non-demonstrative stoic type, very similar to Willie. Hmmm, for those looking for fire, I guess the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.

  3. I need a Churchiee jersey. Lovee him. My favorite Met behind Johan. <3
I knew he was going to be a great pick up for the Mets, and with the way Schenider is playing as well and handling the pitching staff. Hate to say it, but L-Millz who?

  4. A great pickup indeed…he’s validating the trade every single day and is really a solid ballplayer.

  5. m00kie says:

Q: Compare the managerial styles of Willie Randolph and Manny Acta.

A: Similar. You see those managers out there who get up in your face and scream in front of the camera and all this other stuff – they’re not like that. But they have that in them . . . behind closed doors.

this quote is going to make some people around here’s head explode with confusion.

    Dave Matthews? That’s unfortunate

    • novanoto says:

      best band of this generation

      • krumbledkookie says:

I don’t care for Dave Matthews, but I think Pearl Jam is the best band of this generation, hands down.

        • m00kie says:

          ..phish..

          :)

        • Danny1986 says:

Either you just completely disrespected U2, or you consider part of the previous generation.

The first is unfortunate. The second just makes me feel old.

        • MercuryMetsIn3008 says:

          green day.

          u2 sucks. no offense.

        • novanoto says:

haha…i didnt disrespect u2, i personally consider them the generation just before dave matthews band, more of an ’80’s began band, instead of a ’90’s began band….

as for pearl jam, i agree…it’s them and dmb for me…just two totally different types of music styling, and personally, i think dmb has been more consistent, but of course, that’s just my opinion

        • Danny1986 says:

why does u2 suck? would really like to understand why someone (applying concise points) would think that.

        • m00kie says:

I’d have to consider U2 part of the 80s, and dmb+pearl jam etc more 90s

        • Chris in Japan says:

Ha, ha! Umm… no. U2 does not suck, my friend. One of the most prolific, intelligent and artful bands around–still.

Same goes for PearlJam. Just a different style and a different world view.

Excuse me? Dave Matthews Band? Who the hell are they?

      • metsftw says:

        LOL

dave matthews is for high school kids and frat boys

  7. boomingranny says:

I know, I was hoping he would say The Badbrains or Funkadelic.

    • Nightlife says:

That would have been pretty sweet. I think my at-bat music would be Funkadelic – I Wanna Know if it’s Good to You.

      • boozermetsfan says:

Was that Steve Serby or Joey Buttafuoco?

      • krumbledkookie says:

I always thought good entrance music for Billy Wags would be “Shut Em Down” by Public Enemy.

Off topic, I know, but I though it pertinent.

  8. krumbledkookie says:

Serby brings up a good point – can we PLEASE put the C (for captain) on D-Wright’s jersey? He has earned it, and is to the Mets what Jeter is to the Yankees.

    What do y’all think?

    • nrmax88 says:

Absolutely not. The “C” is for hockey players. Since baseball isn’t even within 10 levels of hockey when it comes to intensity and the need for a captain and leader, I say no way. I hate seeing baseball players with a “C” on their jersey.

      • nrmax88 says:

I dont mean to say I dont think Wright isn’t our leader and best player, I just think the idea of a “C” on a baseball uniform is stupid.

      • krumbledkookie says:

I don’t see what one has to do with the other. The fact that baseball is more cerebral than physical does not dilute the intensity, nor does it detract from the need for competent leadership.

    • Too soon. Wright’s too young. Jeter wasn’t named captain of the Yankees until his 9th season. Maybe in a few years it will be time. And there’s nothing preventing Wright from being a leader now without the formal title.

      • krumbledkookie says:

        Good points, all of them.

That said, though, I don’ think it would be too much for David to handle – as you imply, he’s already doing the job in more ways than one.

    • metsfan227 says:

I wouldn’t care/mind if they decided to *name* David the captain of the team. I have no doubt that he could handle it. I just have a hard time imagining that anyone on the team would care. I just don’t believe that Beltran or Reyes or Delgado or anyone with more or the same level of major league experience as Wright would actually listen to anything he has to say.

I guess I don’t think that he really has any influence over many other players on that team.

    • m00kie says:

wagner called david the captain the other day during his michael kay rant.

    • hi5wright says:

you really don’t think anyone would resent having a 25 year old telling them what to do?
