ATD: Jones, Little Things, Smoltz, Hole
By Mike Nichols - May 19, 2008 10:49 am

Marlins (24-19, Tied First):

Mike Phillips of the Miami Herald, citing a ‘major-league source,’ reports the Marlins are on the verge of signing OF Jacque Jones.

Jones was batting .165 with 1 HR and 5 RBI in 79 at-bats this season before being released by the Tigers.

Over at Fish Stripes, Craig analyzes the Jones signing from a defensive prespective.

Phillies (24-21, 2 LB):

Jim Salisbury of the Philadelphia inquirer says Brett Myers‘ stubborn use of his fastball is costing him this season.

Chase Utley does the “little things,” writes Tom Goyne of Balls, Sticks & Stuff.

Braves (22-21, 2 LB):

After feeling more discomfort in his shoulder following a Saturday Bullpen session, Johm Smoltz’s late May return may be in doubt, writes David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Nationals (19-26, 7 LB):

Ben Goessling of the Washington Times says the loss of Nick Johnson, who led the team with a .415 OBP, leaves a big hole in the Nationals lineup.

    What?! Nick Johnson’s out?!

    perspective, not prospective

Come on I understand the losses back and it’s Matt’s site but we are not tied with the Marlins for 1st place. Even if you use the idea of LB, if those are tied then you should go with the team that has the most wins or highest winning percentage. No way you loook at it are we tied for 1st place.

I tend to like looking at it from the “losses back” perspective. It is more common sense then statistical. Those losses can never be taken away, but we could always make up the wins.

    • metsfan119 says:

I totally agree with you, you’re making a BIG assumption that the Mets are going to win the games extra games that the Marlins have played.

      • dave27 says:

The standings say “losses back” – what’s the assumption?

        • metsfan119 says:

Assumption being that the actual standings don’t accurately reflect the performance of each team respective of each other. Which it does.

    • dykstraw says:

i have to agree here. i know it’s not homerism but it reeks of it. we are simply not tied for first.

Beating the Yankees twice was great, but let’s not forget that the Mets also won a series in Arizona, against a better team than the Yanks, and then sht the bed in the next series. Win 3 of 4 against the Braves (kill Tom Glavine) and sustain the momentum. I don’t think anyone doubts the Mets have the talent to beat anyone, but until they do it consistently, these series wins don’t really mean anything.

    • Wondy says:

Dead on. If they take five of the next seven and win the next two series like we wanted them to with the last homestand, I’ll believe they’ve turned a corner. Regardless, it’s hard not to be happy about this weekend.

    • therealsince86 says:

I have to get on you for this one, but are you now wanting the Mets to actually WIN games?

      • metsfan119 says:

If the Mets could go on a 3 game losing streak and have WIllie fired I’d sign up for it. However, if the Mets use this two game sweep to propel themselves forward in spit of Willie, I’ll run with it.

  5. metsfan119 says:

I’m devastated by the news of Smoltz’s shoulder. Will he still be able to do his fabulous and informative in-game interviews?

    • Another Matt says:

      Yeah. Poor Schmoltz. Boo hoo.

Here’s hoping Glavine reproduces his last Mets start on Tuesday.

  6. skins107 says:

Who cares about the standings since no one team has run away with the division it is time for the Mets to step up and win 15 of their next 20 and separate themselves. That was the Mets problem last year looking back at where everyone else was instead of worrying about themselves

    • jamie says:

I set my bar lower (hoping for 14 of the next 21til their next day off), but hopefully it goes like you say.

    • Another Matt says:

Indeed. It’s way, way too early for scoreboard-watching.

This team is looking like it’s coming together, let’s go on a roll and make it irrelevant what anyone else is doing. We have the talent, we sure as heck have the pitching, and we just picked up a little momentum. We can bust this division open, if we can keep on executing like we did this weekend.

  7. Gasface77 says:

This team seems to rise to the occasion and have a knack of pounding “aces” and stinking it up against no-name rookies (ie: Wang, Webb, Penny, etc.) It is an excellent formula for winning a short playoff series, however, it is troubling during the regular season. I would love to see more consistency. Hopefully they will get in a “nice little rhythm” here and get on a roll.

  8. HoJoWright says:

off topic: I hope Maine “slips” again and goes up and in on Larry! No one cares about your bid for .400, knock him down Maine. Also, I really hope the Mets don’t swing at Glavine’s always off the plate pitches. Work him, like everyone learned to do against us the past few years and make him pitch, he’ll eventually give up the meatballs. don’t swing at the outside slider, Wright

    • sddbaker says:

David Wright wishes he was good enough to hold Chipper’s sweaty jockstrap.

  9. Dafatone80 says:

Ugh. More about Chase Utley and the little things.

How about, “Chase Utley crushes the ball at the plate, while demonstrating good plate discipline and playing great defense.”

    Screw the little things.

  10. SixtyNineEightySix says:

Chipper’s sweaty jockstrap? How about his kid named Shea.
