News: Mets sign minor-league OF Eric Reed
By Matthew Cerrone - May 19, 2008 12:39 pm

According to Brian Moritz of the Press & Sun Bulletin, the Mets have signed 27–year-old OF Eric Reed to a minor league contract.

Back in 2005, when Reed was still a top prospect with the Marlins, John Sickels of MinorLeagueBall.com wrote of his skillset: “Speed demon, stole 40 bases between Carolina and Albuquerque…Lack of power and weak on-base skills limit his value.”

In 41 at-bats with the Marlins in 2006, Reed hit .098.

from what i recall, he’s mostly known for his speed…he has gap power at best…he has very little plate discipline…however, he does play very good defense

I haven’t followed the OF situation in New Orleans, so I’m not sure what to make of this.

    • adropofvenom says:

Not even New Orleans, he’s supposed to be “Replacing” Fernando Martinez on the Binghamton roster while he recovers from his Injury.

looks more like a pinch runner or defensive replacement guy..maybe insurance for alou?

This signing may be the end of the world as we know it.

(Thanks to last night’s victory, I have nothing else to complain about today).

Can he play better defense than Johnny Damon? Is it just me or does he look like a t-baller out there in left field catching fly balls. I was hysterical laughing watching him last night, especially when he lobbed that ball to Jeter who was standing about 20 feet in front of him.

Jason Tyner, where are you when we need you?

  7. akleinb says:

Wait, don’t we already have an Endy Chavez?

    • Koko says:

It’s not like Reed is in the major’s. If nothing else - when Alou goes down again and if Pagan isn’t read Reed can come in. Or if Chavez is used as part of a trade down the road or . . .

Just building depth that is all. Maybe it works, maybe it doesn’t, but it doesn’t hurt to get a guy in that might be able to help down the road.

Actually, Jason Tyner was just DFA by the indians at the end of last week.

    • Tidewater says:

I’m amazed he’s had any major league time at all. What a terrible pick he was. And everyone but the Mets knew it at the time.

Reed in definitely in Binghamton to replaced Fernando while he is out with the strained hamstring. The farm is quite slim pickings in the outfield department & they have been scrambling for replacements/backups in Binghamton.

Reed looks like he weighs about 97 lbs out there lol. HIs defense isn’t too bad at all though. I don’t expect to see him around for too long. I think it would be safe to assume that this is a move to cover the minors should Fernando be out for a long extended period of time.

these guys have a habit of percolating up to the bigs, to my chagrin

except when it’s edgardo alfonzo and the games don’t count

  11. Jova1931 says:

    Sounds like a steroid guy.
How do you go from being a top prospect to hitting .098?

  12. kandiman says:

    Whoopdie freaking do

Another OF in Binghamton that doesn’t get headlines is Ambiorix Concepcion. He hasn’t played great at AA, but I saw him play quite a few times in Brooklyn, and he looked like he had a lot of upside. He’s raw and has a lot of learning to do, but we’d be more likely in the future to see him than Eric Reed.

    • adropofvenom says:

Ah, Concepcion was a bit of a hyped prospect a few years ago but he never really panned out with the bat. I seriously doubt he has an impact in the big leagues at any point now.

      • imissthemojo says:

You won’t see Concepcion make any kind of noise for the Mets. He was definitely a hyped prospect, but his defense is terrible and he’s nothing to really write home about.

        • MudvilleNine says:

Didnt show that bad a defense with Brooklyn. He had a cannon for an arm though. Threw a guy out at home on the fly, from about 300′ and I dont think the ball was ever more than 10′ off the ground. I was hoping that his bat would improve as he did have some pop. Well, just another guy with talent that didnt develop like we hoped.

  14. Necciai27 says:

Another Luis Matos or Chad Hermansen type signing. He’s just there to plug a gap (Fernando Martinez’s absense due to injury at Binghamton) and then gets cut or sent to rookie ball if the season has begun when said gap gets filled (Fernando Martinez comes back).

  15. TheIcon says:

This really isn’t anything. Organizations make signings like this all the time to plug holes in the minor league system. This guy will very likely never see the grass at Shea Stadium.

    • ExileInLA says:

Except maybe from the driver’s seat of the lawnmower after he gets cut again…

  16. Woo, I was waiting for us to pick him up.

  17. SixtyNineEightySix says:

    Championship!!!

So in other words… he blows.
