Nunez, Reed…did the Mets think they were running low on crappy players and had to restock?

blains2000 May 19, 2008 at 5:26 pm

lol

ebfnyc May 19, 2008 at 6:54 pm

hes almost Jewish until you get to the last name.

koosman3669 May 19, 2008 at 7:37 pm

Coulda been changed from Nunezki

NY Sports Dog May 19, 2008 at 5:20 pm

Solid pickup….utility infielders seem like a commodity Omar covets, and who knows when you’ll need another one.

That said, this guy is one of the worst hitters in the history of the steroid era modern baseball.

Tidewater May 19, 2008 at 5:50 pm

Am I thinking of somebody else, or was he once considered a pretty big prospect.

Regardless, he is not any good at all.

iamatwork May 19, 2008 at 6:32 pm

What happened to Anderson Hernandez, who is STILL on the 40 man roster?

krumbledkookie May 19, 2008 at 6:57 pm

He’s proven he can hit everything EXCEPT major league pitching.

Another Matt May 20, 2008 at 8:46 am

He’s not hitting AAA pitching right now either. (.197/.253/.303 – eurgh)

chicagometfan May 19, 2008 at 5:21 pm

I sure hope they do not have to use Nunez but we are very thin on back up infielders so it can’t hurt.

TBlz May 19, 2008 at 5:23 pm

That and you know at some point this summer, half the 25-man roster will keel over with some injury or another…

toomanyuniforms May 19, 2008 at 5:31 pm

Give him an AB or two against the Phils and see if he’s motivated. Heck, we get burned by former Mets all the time.

jws366 May 19, 2008 at 5:31 pm

I would have preffered getting Jauque Jones for the minor league deal that the Marlins did.

Now thats what I call a smart investment.

Don Logan May 19, 2008 at 5:37 pm

Marlins have room for him, Mets don’t. Jones wants to go where he can play. Not where he can play some OF in triple A until September.

Don Logan May 19, 2008 at 5:34 pm

I think they’re just filling out their New Orleans roster, esp now that we have Tatis and Johnson was cut not too long ago.

Mingo May 20, 2008 at 7:55 am

That’s exactly it.

professor met May 19, 2008 at 5:36 pm

get ready….get set…..BLEHHH!!!!!! I guess I see the logic. It’s just been a slow day and this has been the first post in a couple of hours. How about a post about how excited we are at the prospect of eviscerating glavine in front of hillbilly braves tomorrow? Mmmm.

K-Hern May 19, 2008 at 5:47 pm

I like this guy’s plan, lets go with this

KinersKornerman May 19, 2008 at 6:58 pm

Excellent use of the term of “eviscerate”
Much better than disembowel.

Bacci May 19, 2008 at 7:22 pm

I know Glavine is the SP tomorrow but the real question is who will we face innings 2 thru 9?

dykstraw May 19, 2008 at 5:38 pm

like i get that this is just a depth move but loooooord is nunez terrible

NY Sports Dog May 19, 2008 at 5:41 pm

He does sux’d in a large way…amazing how many big league at bats this guy has tortured hometown fans with over the years. :-)

guierllNO MOta May 19, 2008 at 5:48 pm

wait, the Mets are paying a guy 12K to go play in the minors and be around just in case all of our IF’s get hurt….Nonsense!!! Omar shouldve gotten Hanley Ramirez to back up Reyes…probably couldve gotten him straight up for Fernando Tatis !!!! Fire Omar!!!!

PS. Bobby V would make Nunez an all-star.

toomanyuniforms May 19, 2008 at 6:26 pm

Can we please have a (self-imposed) moratorium on posts with the above tired formula. We get it. Met fans will blame everything and anything on Omar and Willie. Very observant. Note that it’s a ridiculously exaggerated caricature, but why make an argument when you can whip a straw man?

zemonstar May 19, 2008 at 6:36 pm

i would have to agree with you sir

BBmetsfreak36 May 19, 2008 at 6:55 pm

im sorry but are you anywhere close to serious? please say no and go watch a baseball game and learn how things work. wow u better be kidding. that was almost as bad as the time i heard someone say trade delgado to the angels for pitching prospects, ben johnson for matt holiday and andersen hernandez for albert puhols. And anything left to go to chase utley.

KinersKornerman May 19, 2008 at 7:02 pm

guierllNO MOta is not serious. It’s a little funny after a great Mets weekend.

I think he also wants to blame Willie for the bad golfing weather this afternoon.

pbelli01 May 19, 2008 at 5:58 pm

sometimes these moves are made not even for the sake of the big league club, but just to add depth and experience to the AAA roster. Id be surprised if we ever saw him, but who knows

ExileInLA May 19, 2008 at 7:15 pm

“Those who can, do. Those who can’t, get sent to AAA and hope that they get as lucky as Crash Davis did in the movies…”

KinersKornerman May 19, 2008 at 7:25 pm

I couldn’t help but yell at the TV this weekend, “Rose goes in the front, Giambi”

Koko May 19, 2008 at 6:01 pm

I don’t care about Nunez.

I do care about the Mets paying back Tom Glavine for the last game of last year!!! Let’s Go Mets!!!

NY Sports Dog May 19, 2008 at 6:17 pm

I care about world hunger; stabilizing oil prices; candle pin bowling; and the Mets….not in that order.

ness589 May 19, 2008 at 6:24 pm

He can probably hit better than Anderson Hernandez and field just as well.

SixtyNineEightySix May 19, 2008 at 6:27 pm

Championship!!!

zemonstar May 19, 2008 at 6:33 pm

MVP waiting to happen…

ebfnyc May 19, 2008 at 6:53 pm

Signing Nunez is like getting beer at Yankee stadium in a plastic cup.

krumbledkookie May 19, 2008 at 6:59 pm

I’ll take the beer.

KinersKornerman May 19, 2008 at 7:04 pm

Nunez is less expensive

batsinthepelfrey May 19, 2008 at 7:10 pm

$9.50 for a draft beer at Yankee Stadium by the way. I enjoyed that, always goes down smooth.

The 7 toilets to serve about 3000 people in the RF Tier Boxes worked out well too. The House that Morons Built.

AlreadyMissShea May 19, 2008 at 7:45 pm

The Dump that Ruth Took

NY Sports Dog May 19, 2008 at 7:23 pm

in the bleachers.

batsinthepelfrey May 19, 2008 at 10:51 pm

and here i thought that was a day old hard pretzel on the ground, now i come to find out it was a petrified ruthian blast. very disturbing.

BBmetsfreak36 May 19, 2008 at 6:59 pm

Sure he wont hit at all but is a great feilder and does the little things right. He’s a fantastic bunter. He started alot for the phils last. As much as i hated it against the mets but time after time he would snag those balls down the line usually by jamie moyer on the mound.

Another Matt May 20, 2008 at 8:52 am

The fact that he started a lot for the Phillies doesn’t say anything good about him. He was a significant part of the least productive 3B in the majors.

Nonetheless, he does give us depth at 3B and SS (I guess Tatis has earned first stab at 3B), and will be less awful at the plate than A-Hern. I think it’s a good move.

Bluewater3272 May 19, 2008 at 7:41 pm

Nunez is our Philly mole

Dafatone80 May 19, 2008 at 7:49 pm

He could be useful as a 25th man. How much infield can he play, and can he play OF at all? I’d really like the mets to have a true utility guy, to help make double switches work and such. Tatis can fill that role, but I’d feel very, very bad about having him at SS.

I only remember seeing Nunez at 3b. Where else can he play?

KinersKornerman May 19, 2008 at 7:52 pm

He can play anywhere except Shea Stadium.

Dafatone80 May 19, 2008 at 9:00 pm

haha.

Another Matt May 20, 2008 at 8:55 am

He’s actually played more each at SS and 2B than he has at 3B.

Only played two professional innings in the OF though, only one of those in the majors. I doubt he’d look any worse than Tatis out there though.

dave27 May 19, 2008 at 8:02 pm

When Castillo was possibly headed for the DL last week and the Mets looked to New Orleans, all they saw as a roster replacement was Anderson Hernandez. I’m sure that has alot to do with Nunez…that and Tatis was playing everyday for them.

I just feel bad for the Hornets…big Game 7 tonight and the arrival of Nunez will steal all of their headlines!

(On that note, I was in New Orleans last fall and I wish I could put into words the quizzical looks I got when asking storeowners if they had any Zephyrs hats in stock. And this was in SPORTS stores. I think 1 in 10 New Orleans residents knows they have a AAA team).

AzMetsFan May 19, 2008 at 9:04 pm

I laughed very out loud about that Game 7 comment…..Nice One!

NY Sports Dog May 19, 2008 at 8:15 pm

Have the XXL Abraham Nunez Mets jerseys been delivered yet?

dave27 May 19, 2008 at 8:26 pm

Someone at Modell’s is searching the stockroom for some vintage 1988 Edwin Nunez numbers…

KinersKornerman May 19, 2008 at 8:42 pm

nice one, dave27. However, we now have a slightly better #45 on the roster

NY Sports Dog May 19, 2008 at 8:47 pm

“Nunez”, roughly translated from the original Portuguese, means, “Tim Foli”.

batsinthepelfrey May 19, 2008 at 10:57 pm

and in spanish I believe it means Tim Bogar

metsfan119 May 19, 2008 at 8:19 pm

All I want to know is, can he play first?

dave27 May 19, 2008 at 8:27 pm

He played mostly 2B earlier in his career with the Pirates, mostly 3B more recently with the Cardinals and Phils.

I am sure he and his 18 career homers can play 1B, if that’s what you like…

KinersKornerman May 19, 2008 at 8:37 pm

Aw C.mon. Can’t we take a day off from our normal Delgado-bashing, especially after he got robbed yesterday.

Don Hahn May 20, 2008 at 2:07 am

Hey, I bet he’s better than Anderson Hernandez, and we definitely need some insurance, Easley makes me a little nervous, he’s has had some decent years

Another Matt May 20, 2008 at 8:57 am

Exactly. Plays 2B, SS & 3B and can’t hit much, but is still an offensive upgrade over A-Hern, in that he can actually hit a little. Just not much.
