As I said earlier, the best part of yesterday’s win over the Yankees was seeing their stadium be dominated by Mets fans, after most Yankee fans fled the scene down 11 to 2.
Ryan Church, talking to reporters about hearing ‘Lets Go Mets’ cheers, while playing in Yankee Stadium:
“It is nice…We gave them something to cheer about, and that’s important. We’ve always said we appreciate the support.”
Yankees OF Johnny Damon, said:
“They had a reason to be out there cheering. They ended up kicking our butts. It was pretty embarrassing.”

This counts. First Sweep at Yankee Stadium!!
i’m not counting unless we win the 3rd when its played
It’s not our fault it rained.
A sweep is a sweep.
Especially since the yankees refused to make the game up over the weekend because they wanted to make sure that A-rod was going to be able to play in it.
I believe it was the Mets who refused to make it up over the weekend…
we kinda have another double dip Tuesday :)
I’m surprised more Mets fans didn’t stay till the end. Also love that Ollie got a semi ovation.
he deserved it the way he played. Good job ollie on out acing the yanks ace.
Yeah, I really thought Wang was going to give the Mets fits, especially since he generally pitches so well at home, but they lit him up.
RH sinkerballer vs. lefty-heavy lineup.
That was a good matchup for the Mets.
Gotta say I agree with you. I thought that Wang’s stuff would make it go to the bullpen, at the very least.
LET’S GO METS!
I think you mean LET’S GO SNY!
Awesome job by Met fans, heard them loud and clear on Sat as well and that was a closer game where you would expect them to be drowned out by yankee fans.
Unfortunately, as a Jet fan I know all too well how it feels to be drowned out by opposing fans in your own stadium. It sucks, and makes these wins even sweeter.
well it’s not really your stadium. last time i checked it said giants stadium.
put whatever name you want on it, it wouldn’t have made a difference.
Wasn’t the score 11-2?
Actually they was down 11 to 2.. Just knitpicking :D
Let’s go Mets!
Johnny Damon should be less embarrassed about the outcome of the game and more embarrassed about his 9 year-old girl-scout-caliber arm.
Remember when he was a good outfielder? I understand having trouble adjusting to hard hit balls to left when you haven’t played there, but he seems completely uncomfortable even on pop flys. He makes alou look like andrew jones.
He looks like he is done. I never want to write the Yankee obituary, especially when they have a couple of the best players in baseball, but they have serious issues.
The only reason anyone can give for that team bouncing back is that their name is the Yankees. From a pure baseball standpoint, that is simply not a good team.
I disagree. I hate the Yankees as much as anyone, but you have to respect their ability to hit, even with some of their hitters not performing so well up to this point (Cano, Giambi, etc.). The Yankees problems are mainly with pitching, which honestly they should have expected. It was unreasonable to expect Kennedy and Hughes to step into that rotation and live up to their potential right away. And considering that Mussina was supposed to be over the hill (and still may prove to be) and that Pettite is long past his prime, they really should have added more depth to that rotation in the off-season. They have problems, no doubt, but they can still hit, and when all is said and done, they probably will hit a ton.
And they were . . .uh. . . missing someone from the lineup.
The pitching is hurting them, but in the long run, I respect their decision to stay with their young guns. Maybe it works, maybe it doesn’t, but if we had a Phil Hughes, I’d sure as heck be patient with him.
All the same, lots of fun to see them crash and burn. . . .
Agreed that the lineup is formidable when healthy, but the starting rotation will likely prevent the kind of second half run they are acustomed to, especially if they fall to far behind. If they move Joba to the rotation that significantly weakens one of their strengths.
I agree with you, toomany…
Were I the Yankees GM, I would have held on to Hughes too. I’m not sure about Kennedy – I’m not quite sure what’s special about him, because whatever it is, I don’t see it.
Not to be a Yankee apologist, but insert A-Rod and Posada into that lineup and they are a much much better team.
As the Mets are when Pedro is in the rotation instead of Claudio Vargas/Nelson Figeroa/Brian Lawrence/Philip Humber/Chan Ho Park…(do I need to keep going?
Your point is a valid one, and I agree with it totaly, particularly with a player of A-Rod’s caliber. However, injuries happen in baseball.
better yet he makes Bobby “OMG its the wall!!!” Abreu look good.
Yeah, I’m pretty sure my grandma’s got a better arm than Damon at this point.
You could pretty much tag up from 1st on a shallow fly to Damon. I’m pretty sure you can run faster than he throws.
There should also have been MVP chants for Church.
Hey, I admit, I was not a Church fan. But if he is not the leading candidate for first quarter MVP, I dont know who is.
His offense, while not the best in the league, is incredible, and his defense is top notch (and game changing quality).
Lance Berkman (unless you meant the Mets MVP), but in any case Church has been phenomenal.
i don’t know if you meant of the mets or of the NL…
but if its the NL…
Chase Utley, Lance Berkman, Soriano? , Brandon Webb!
Theres a lot man
Chase Utley has come back down to Earth, whereas Berkman hasn’t. Utley is hitting .209 in May.
i stand corrected…
This guy Larry Jones is ripping the ball too
yeah, hate to say it but I think chipper is hitting over 400 with double digit HRs and 30+ RBIs
Hoss
Yeah, they flashed it up during the game: Larry’s hitting .410. Scary.
Berkman leads the majors in HRs and the NL in RBIs though, and is hitting .399, has more ABs than Larry, and is more depended upon by his team. He’d be my pick.
If we’re really having this discussion in May, I’d have to say that, given a very literal definition of an “MVP,” I’ve got to go with Webb thus far. If you don’t like the idea of a pitcher as an MVP candidate, it’s just way, way, way too early, but Berkman and . . . well, Ludwick, believe it or not, have been great. Ut-head has settled a bit, but he’s still my odds on favorite to finish on top, unless the sportswriters finally wake up and realize that he’s aided immeasurably (well, measurably, but you get the picture) by his ballpark.
Dead-on! Great post, toomanyunis!
Think of Willie Randolph and the 2008 Mets like this: Tom Coughlin and the 2007-08 Giants. On the hot seat, just waiting for the team to kick it into high gear. I think Willie will reap the benefits when this team wins the pennant in 4 months.
The only difference is that Tom Coughlin is qualified to do his job…
No was thinking that at the time… everyone hated Coughlin. I don’t know a person who didn’t. Are you claiming you knew he would lead them to the Superbowl… let alone the playoffs?
how many giants fans were saying that when they were 0-2 and tiki had retired and they let up 80 points in two games. now that they brought the lombardi trophy home, you cant remember how we used to think.
That’s aggressive
I just want to weigh in regarding your screen name, which is the best I’ve seen, OF AWLL THE DRAMATIC screen names out there.
Also, re: Giants/ Mets, it happens that managers/coaches who have shown zero to a certain point with a certain group can stumble upon the right set of motivational tools, the right schedule, maybe a player who hadn’t stepped up does due to injury or other stimulus, and all of a sudden, they’re rolling. That’s what I’m clinging to. I’m on record (and hardly alone in this) as saying that the team will never win with Randolph, but I was impressed with the approach this week. I think these guys need a chip on their collective shoulder.
The problem is that that sort of attitude is tough to maintain. It may be that a dogfight for the playoffs will help them. To go back to a football analogy, sometimes the slow floater to a wide open receiver that he can watch all the way in is the toughest to catch — too much thinking.
Then again, we still need to see comebacks. I mean, I’m fine with not needing comebacks, believe me, but over the course of the season, you’ve got to be able to come from behind.
coughlin didn’t have the history of spectacular failure than willie does now. limping in to the playoffs and losing is still a great deal less painful than epic regular season collapse.
as a card carrying willie basher, i would LOVE to be proven absolutely, totally wrong.
While it was nice to see a large Met-fan contingent in Yankees Stadium, it was hardly the best part, especially for a team that struggled mightily against the Nats. There were numerous better parts of the weekend – namely, Jose Reyes’ two HR’s, the fact that the Mets scored 18 runs in 2 games off of the Yankees two best pitchers, the fact that the Mets got solid pitching performances, including considerable length, out of Johan and Ollie, and the fact that the team responded as whole to the increased criticism last week which culminated in Wagner’s rant on Thursday.
Great weekend.
I’d find it hard to believe any Mets fan didn’t get some smug satisfaction touching up St. Joba for a huge insurance run Saturday as well…
Personally, after fighting 45 “Wang is overrated” battles so far this season the 7 spot was also welcome.
Smacking the mighty Justin Chamberlain around for a little insurance felt good.
That’s Joba. Unless you meant Justin Timberlake, and I don’t remember the Mets smacking him around, though that would have been nice, too :-)
I believe he meant to say Joba The Butt ! :)
Justin is Joba’s real name.
Actually, his real name is Joba, though he was born with the name Justin. He had it legally changed some time ago.
Wang’s an Ace, Santana is overrated…
Hahahaha
I really wish this was our last game in Yankee Stadium…bookended with the Mlicki game as the first.
Wow, the Mets players get cheered too, even in Yankee stadium…you’d never think that was the case with all the whining about booing going on.
Chien Ming Wang called. He wanted to know if anyone has seen his sinker. I told him to check the center field seats.
Nice.
He could’ve asked his teammates, if any of them talked to him.
LETS GO METS! Lets right this ship now. It was indeed nice to see Joba give up some hits and a run. I hate that kid, the media thinks he’s so great when really he hasn’t done much. Now, if Reyes can keep getting on base, Church continue to be the MVP and Moises looking great- this could turn into a great road trip and beyond.
W L IP H SO ERA
Joba: 1 2 18.3 22 2.95
Joe Smith 0 0 17.7 18 2.55
I really can’t stand all of the hype around Joba. They guy has thrown about 50 innings in the majors in his career. The league will catch up to him. I am not saying he will not be good, but his status right now is a little bit overblown. Enough already with him.
Remember in March when we won 5 in a row? Seems like ancient memory, but we need to riffle off a streak like that right now. Sweep the braves then go take out the Rockies before a battle for first place with the fish.
Why are the Mets, for a second year in a row, getting denied an interleague series in exchange for an extra road series against an NL-playoff team?
Last year, we only played only 3 non-Yankee interleague series (Det, Oak, Min) in favor of an extra 3 games in LA, and this year we only have 3 again (Tex, Sea, LAA) in favor of 3 extra games in Colorado. What gives?
I’d rather have the games in Colorado myself… they should be more winnable.
The unbalanced schedule stinks, though.
My goodness how quickly the mood on this site has shifted.
I think we had some good things to take from the most recent losses but nobody discussed them because the focus was on the media-created tempest in a teapot—Wagner’s miffed moment. Look at the pitching we’ve had from our starters 4 games in a row. Both Vargas and Pelfrey deserved wins–they pitched better than both Santana and Ollie but took losses. And the bullpen has not been overworked. This is good in the long haul. If Mr Reyes can keep his head still when he’s swinging the bat, we may start to click. Nice weekend.
I can’t believe, after the constant and negative articles (and comments) on this site all last week, that you can say “‘the best part about yesterdays game was the Met fans chanting in Yankee Stadium’”! Who the hell cares about that?
How about:
Timely hitting from top-to-bottom
Excellent defense
Scoring in the next half-inning after the Yanks put up runs
Starting Pitching excellence!!!
Hitting with RISP
Executing fundies
Relief pitching
And Managing/Coaching
Really, Matt, I’m starting to believe that Buzz whoeverheis comments about bloggers….
Sheesshhh, talk about fickleness
