Note: Glavine to face the Mets
By Matthew Cerrone - May 20, 2008 9:45 am

Tom Glavine will face the Mets today, for the first time since leaving for Atlanta via free agency last winter.

He is 1–1 with a 4.41 ERA this season for the Braves.

glavine will be pitching against John Maine, who was essentially a student of glavine’s last season…hopefully, pitching against his former mentor will not mess with johnny’s head

For more on Glavine, read the New York Post.

glavine was terrible against the Braves after joining the Mets…it would be nice if he could return the favor by being terrible against the Mets after re-joining the Braves…

Speaking of Braves pitchers, if John Smoltz is ever able to return from the disabled list, he’ll likely pitch from the bullpen and not the starting rotation, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Hahaha hope they take advantage and pound this guy…Take em out in the first inning guys. LGM

    • Ollie Ollie Oxen Free says:

I really hope so too. I liked Glavine as a Met. I thought he was a good clubhouse influence, but we gotta be able to hit him. I could see Wright having success against him.

      • gowrightgo says:

I can see Wright getting absolutely zero to hit. Everything off the plate and down. The good thing is Glavine is not the type of sidearming lefty that can easily get left handed hitters out. We should be fine and Delgado should be able to get around on Glavines fastball

  2. bigchart333 says:

such a HUGE end of the month, with HOTlanta and Florida and teh NL West contending Dodgers..this may very well make or break the team’s will…regardless, i for one will be rooting HARD for my team,s tarting with ditching work early today for some wings and beers for the 1pm game

  3. krumbledkookie says:

I know everyone wants the Mets to go out and pound on Glavine, and while there would be a certain satisfaction to be gathered from that, I myself would find it more satisfying for John Maine to go out and win a real pitcher’s duel, and beat Glavine 2-1 or 1-0.

I know all we remember is the last few starts that Glavine made here, which were terrible indeed, but let us not forget the positive contributions that he made to this team for a few years. He was always the consummate professional and always battled. He may not always have been successful, but he did go to the mound prepared to win every fifth day.

    • sincekindergarten says:

Agreed. That being said, if Glavine’s here, Johan probably isn’t. And, I’d love to see the Mets run Glavine early and tire out the Atlanta pen for the nightcap.

      • krumbledkookie says:

Oh yeah, it would be silly to argue that the Mets should have kept Glavine – his tenure here was done, but I think we still should all appreciate what he did for the club.

        • toomanyuniforms says:

I love exciting games, and I’m itching to see the Mets win a comeback in a “battle of the bullpens,” but all of that said, by preference for today is 15-0.

    • VenturaHighway says:

Maine’s been a real gamer this year, and the scary thing is that he could be even better…his strikeout rate is down and his walk rate up from last year. Let’s hope we get a lot of innings out of him so our ‘pen is rested for the nightcap.

    • CaseStreet says:

No way. I want the Mets to continue pounding the ball. None of this pitchers dual crap. Mets win 5-2.

    • euchreking says:

I also agree. Glavine gave his heart to the Mets for 5 years. He pitched through some terrible starts and learned how to be effective. I will always remember his start against the Cardinals in the NLCS when he shut them down so effectively, leading Pujols to say “he wasn’t that good.” Ha! That game stands out just as vividly as does hiw last miserable start.

Glavine was great with the fans and with kids especially, giving autographs easily and even on days that he started. His behavior in this regard was much more fan friendly than any other member of the Mets through the years he was with them. We should beware riding down every former Met who we encounter anyway. Not a good showing for us as fans I think. I was at the game when Darryl Strawberry came back the first time as a Dodger. I never heard such booing! The he hit a homer and we all cheered, because we suddenly saw that we really loved him and and his ability to drive a ball. I know he was home-grown, and Glavine is suspect because he went back to the hated Braves. But there was a lot of shared respect and love between mets fans and Glavine; we shouldn’t forget that.

  4. whynot says:

Any other readers going to be at the Ted this afternoon?

We should have the run of the place for the afternoon game if we can get the early lead. Hopefully the John Maine Express keeps rolling.

    • atlantasnumberonemetsfan says:

Would love to… Don’t have anybody to go with, All my Mets friends are working and can’t take the day….

  5. dave27 says:

In fairness to Glavine, after the first couple of years, he actually pitched pretty well in most of his starts against Atlanta.

Glavine will be remembered for 3 things with the Mets: His first start on Opening Day 2003 against the Cubs, his last start, and the fact that the Braves destroyed him his first few times out. Oh, and that he never really wanted to be here in the first place. The fact that he pitched extremely well in the 2006 postseason, and was effictively the 1 or 2 starter for this team for 5 years, is completely lost.

I’m not getting any warm fuzzies about Tommy, but just saying.

That said, I’ll take 7 tuns without an out today.

    • Ollie Ollie Oxen Free says:

I guess he pitched OK in teh post season. He kinda gave up a lead against St. Louis in Game 3. I hold no grudges though.

      • dave27 says:

He actually pitched a gem in game 1, but he did pitch a mediocre game 5 to put the Mets in a 3-2 hole. He also pitched a stellar game 2 vs. the Dodgers in the NLDS. All in all he pitched really well.

    • Mr. Bananagrabber says:

I’ll remember the fact that his 300th win came in a Mets uniform. Personally. I think others will too.

    • twassel says:

Actually, he was 4-11 against Atlanta, with an ERA over 5. (I didn’t realize it was so bad.) His 5 year record was 0-4, 1-2, 1-2, 1-1, and 1-2. His ERA against them the last three years was a respectable 3.40.

  6. bvaz says:

yeah, it’s Glavine, but more importantly it is a road divisional game.
hopefully Glavine doesn;t get out of the 5th due to his high pitch count and we start the 4 games in 3 days by taxing their bullpen.
in the end, it is all about wins and losses and I am happy to see Glavine pitching the first game, hoping that he does not go deep into the game.

  7. Jaded1983 says:

I want to see 24-19 by the end of today. Johnny Maine is pitching the first game, correct? Whose pitching tonight? Is it Pelf?

  8. cbkolb says:

I have no hard feelings regarding Glavine…probably because I never accepted him as a Met. He rarely pitched well against the Braves, at first I attributed it to the Mets’ lineup when he first joined the team. Then, I just figured that Atlanta’s lineup had the book on him.

His performance last year is what Met fans will choose to remember by, perhaps rightly so. But, I will remember him for not missing starts and usually giving the club 6 strong innings and keeping the team in the game.

My respect for Glavine does not change the fact that nothing would make me happier than to see him get beat by Maine today. For years, along with Maddux and Smoltz, Glavine killed the Mets and I for one would like to see the tables turned.

Now is as good a time as ever to start putting some distance between the Phils and the Braves.

    let’s go mets!

    • gowrightgo says:

Sensible. I like it and agree. I never warmed up to him but I certainly appreciated the fact that he was above avg and gave us innings. If he were our #3 starter in the past and this years #5 starter, I think we would all be happy.

No one liked how it ended but I certainly want to thank him for convincing the braves to take him back. Not just because I believe we will bash him as we have the book on him. But because he will get us a top 22 pick and sandwich pick in this years draft.

      THANK YOU TOMMY

  9. backinbusiness says:

LGM, time to “devastate” Glavine. I’m disappointed our first shot at him isn’t at Shea.

    • Dirtysanchez says:

LOLLLL imagine that….I would say delgado gets the night off with the boos lol

  10. WozzyBear says:

They need to light this guy up this afternoon…But if they don’t, I won’t be devestated. Devastation is for much greater things in life.

  11. shea_guevara says:

I certainly hope the Mets beat Glavine up. And I hope that as they do, we get plenty of shots of Tommy rolling his eyes because he’s not getting strike calls three feet off the plate.

  12. Jova1931 says:

I’m hoping the Mets are patient against Glavine. After seeing him for five years here, we noticed he was most effective when people got themselves out.

    • mex84 says:

They need to lay off his pitches and go deep into counts and get those walks. I think Wright has a big game. Lets go Mets!

    • HoJoWright says:

exactly, the batters always seemed to get themselves out. if you don’t swing at the pitch just off the plate he won’t beat you. I really hope wright and reyes can remember this and just be patient and get on base for church. I think Delgado will have a good series too.

lets get to Glavine by the 4th. It ’s Maine’s time now

    • jcervone7 says:

Very true, they need to force a lot of pitches out of him. Don’t swing at the changeups, make him have to throw that 80mph fastball.

      • krumbledkookie says:

How sweet would it be for John Maine to take Glavine deep on one of those 80 mph “fastballs?”

  13. sddbaker says:

You people amaze me. One week you talk nastier about your team than most fans talk about their biggest rival. The next week, after winning a couple of games against a last place team in the other league, you’re all of a sudden the greatest team ever. Your fans are going to take over Turner Field. Your team is going to pound Tom Glavine, blah, blah, blah…. I think the entire Mets fan base is in desperate need of mood stabilizers.

    • mex84 says:

Some of us here actually stay positive all the time. I cant speak for the rest, but if you look back in previous posts I am always upbeat. I think this team is underachieveing slightly. There is alot of parity in the league right now and i think we are deep anough to exploit that.

      • Thee Bruce Dickenson says:

        Slightly??

        • mex84 says:

How would you define? I dont think anyone is as good as the Red Sox or the Cubs. The Mets appear to be a mid 80-92 win club.

        • RPsJacket says:

Better with a healthy rotation of santana, maine, perez, martinez, and pelfrey.

And real dangerous in the playoffs if they can take the division. Really dangerous.

          Lets Go Mets!

      • Jova1931 says:

Same here man. I very optimistic and always have been with this team.

      • Dirtysanchez says:

I agree. Im one that if you look at my posts i stay optimistic and positive about my team.

“I think the entire Mets fan base is in desperate need of mood stabilizers.”

Dont speak for all of us. While i agree there are some fans(..and bloggers) that need to chill out, there are just about the same who while they are fustrated at times stay positive and look at the bight side.

    • K-Hern says:

“the entire Met fan base” does not post on this site

      • HoJoWright says:

go back to your own site sddbaker. is that you chipper?

      • sddbaker says:

I understand that; however, I was posting that after reading from several Mets sites. I also realize I shouldn’t make sweeping generalizations about “all Mets fans”. I suppose I just get frustrated with hearing about how the Braves’ fans are so apathetic and don’t fill up the park for every game, etc. It just isn’t true. I know many, many Braves fans who love our team with a passion and support them through ups and downs. Sure the atmosphere at Turner Field is different from the atmosphere at Shea, or Citizen’s Park, or Yankee Stadium. Thank goodness for that. Would we really want them to all be the same? Just because the fans in Turner are not in a constant frenzy doesn’t mean they are not paying attention to the game or don’t care. For the most part, Southerns are by nature more “laid back”. That doesn’t mean you should underestimate us… or our team. Go Braves!

        • gowrightgo says:

No its not just different in terms of the demeanor of the crowd…its half empty. The Braves may have a loyal fan base and they have been a very well run organization for a long time but the team does not draw on a level equal with the product.

Reminds me of the Devils up here in NJ. They are a top team year in and year out but never draw during the regular season and like the braves, have a hard time filling up the seats when playoffs come.

Nice team over the years, inadequate fans. Sorry but its true

        • WozzyBear says:

sddbaker: Simply stated, “Hotlanta” is a 3rd rate city in comparison to NY. Always has been. Always will be. Enjoy the games.

        • whynot says:

Don’t be sorry, take advantage. While obviously there are plenty of passionate Braves fans, the atmosphere at the Ted is pretty lame. But, that’s a good thing if you’re a Met fan (or cubs, or red sox, etc). You can literally take over the place if you have the lead even though you’re outnumbered 5 to 1.

Also, it’s truly amazing when the Red Sox show up here. The stadium is probably half Sox fans and they are LOUD. It’s an amazing sight at a visiting ballpark.

  14. RPsJacket says:

Torre had some interesting comments about playing in ATL for bad teams. You can probably find them if you look. Not too kind.

  15. sddbaker says:

I guess the “if you have the lead” part is what’s really eating up the Mets fans.

As for the Red Sox fans that show up, for the most part the word I would use is not LOUD, but OBNOXIOUS.

I don’t actually live in Atlanta — I live about 4 hours away in Tennessee, so I don’t get to go to as many games as I would like, but I’ve never been to one with the stadium “half-empty”, or even close. The crowd is involved with the game; the atmosphere is not “lame”. Granted, we don’t have mind-numbing screeching music playing constantly and we hardly ever boo our own players — I can’t remember it happening anyway. I suppose if you consider being friendly and sort of, well, polite, as being lame, yeah, maybe we are lame.

Also, thank you Wozzy… I really think I will enjoy the games — probably a lot more than you.
