Note: Willie’s Pre-Game Comments
By Matthew Cerrone - May 20, 2008 12:29 pm

Prior to today’s game, Willie Randolph told reporters that his remarks from Sunday regarding SNY, race, etc, were ‘tongue and cheek,’ while talking to a reporter, Ian O’Conner from the Bergen Record, who he has known for years.

To watch video of Randolph’s comments, click play below:

He said the Wilpons hired him not because he is black, but because they thought he could do the job at hand.

Admittedly, he said he probably should have thought more about what he said, because it has nothing to do with race and all about winning ball games.

He is not upset with SNY’s portrayal of him, though he does believe they only focus on him when something negative happens, not when something positive happens.

“When you win and do well,” he said, “All of this kind of stuff isn’t talked about.”

Update12:45 pm

…i don’t know, man…to me, willie is starting to seem very, very paranoid, super defensive, and he’s talking and looking like a guy who can’t handle the pressure of managing in New York

…in year one, the team did well…in year two, it did great…things were pretty easy for him then, in terms of fan support and media attention, and so all was well…

…however, since the end of last season the heat has turned up, and as such, the heat under his collar has seemingly gone up as well…it doesn’t help that he is rather defensive by nature, according to people who know him professionally, and so if fans start booing and media start swirling, whether he’s right in how they portray him or not, it makes sense that he would become defensive with us and beat writers and SNY, etc, as well…

…it’s weird, because, having lived through the Bronx Zoo, who better than him to know what New York fans and media are like…that said, maybe that experience also trained him to be paranoid…

don’t buckle, willie…don’t fight the fans…don’t fight the media…because you’ll never win…just stay strong and for pete’s sake, stop talking…

Whatever your stance on the media might be, it is a sure-fire road to disaster to take on the NY media. He’s not going to win this one.

    • ravi3 says:

Yea…You’ve gotta pick your battles wisely. This is not one to pick, at least publically. Considering its the team’s network, perhaps Willie could have sat with one of the producers (Bill Webb?) to discuss the issue. By the way, I really never noticed those things until Willie mentioned it. I’ve definitely seen him up on the top step of the dugout, cheering his guys on, and patting them on the back, etc etc. Either way, this is a stupid debate. As with any other sport in New York, when you win, all the BS goes away.

  2. dave27 says:

    Exactly…Willie should know better.

  3. giuseppe franco_procede says:

Is he asking to get fired?

    • giuseppe franco_procede says:

      Can we say, “GEORGE FOSTER”?!?!?

    • shinjosplints17 says:

Did anyone hear his post game comments after the Sat. Yankees game when asked if it was a big win, willie who always gives you the it’s just another game speech but now that he is in trouble he went with something along the lines of yeah it was a big win got us back on track. Make up your mind is game 42 the same as game 100 or that changes when your job is in trouble

  4. ToastyJoe says:

Holy crap – who cares how your own team’s network portrays you. Just win.

  5. dave27 says:

“I’m sure it will be similar to when I pitched against the Braves,” Glavine said in an e-mail on Monday. “It’s always weird when you face former teammates, let alone your former team. I’m sure facing the Mets will be different than pitching against any other team.”

Wow, you can really FEEL the emotion, huh?

  6. joebass123 says:

let’s forget this and just go win some games!

  7. zen says:

in his two seasons as manager joe girardi has a last place team who was formerly a decade long first place team and a fourth place team that finished 19 games out of first place. he also has a manager of the year award.

  8. therealsince86 says:

This may very well be the nail in the coffin, especially if the Mets do not start playing inspiring ball. If for some reason the Mets drop below .500 or otherwise mediocre play then this will be the lights out reason for Willie. It’s almost like he is doing this on purpose. Kinda like how he kept using Franco and Mota so Omar would get them off the team. Is he doing the same thing to himself?

    • Danny1986 says:

it is so peculiar. Can’t expalin it. Why would he bring this up knowing NOTHING good can come of it. It creates a distraction to the real focus at hand….playing winning baseball.

Seriously, perhaps Willie is fed up.

      • Mexworshipper says:

Maybe he’s doing it to breed the “us against the world” situation. I think that’s the type of attitude that we’re seeing from the team. I was very surprised to hear David Wright say “the fans are ‘what have you done for me lately’ fans” This got very little attention and I was surprised. Maybe Willie thinks getting the team in that state of mind will get them to play better.

        • One thing no one or few have touched on is Willie criticizing the booing in that interview. That’s the first time I saw him do that. Previously he would say things like, oh, that’s just NY.

So apparently there is a distinct element of antagonism toward the fans’ booing and perhaps as you say it’s an “us against the world” type of attitude.

By criticizing the booers, he at least shows his players who are the target of the boos that he’s going to bat for them. That’ can’t be anything but helpful.

  9. gipper82475 says:

Wow. I mean, just, wow. He’s still on this? How SNY treats him???! Please. He may have a beef with some writers, but SNY is very fair to him, especially “during games.” Ronnie and Keith often laud his handling of players, and he is often shown “teaching” in the dugout.

Gary seems less enamored with him.

All in all though, SNY does NOT go out of it’s way to show Willie in a bad light – quite the opposite.

I don’t get why Willie thinks Bill Webb hates him. His paranoia is reaching Nixonian levels.

    • gipper82475 says:

Wow…Matt – your post just changed radically.

He’s still wrong about the SNY coverage.

    • therealsince86 says:

I know, I can’t understand why Willie continues whining about this stuff. It’s almost as bad as those who continue to whine about last year’s collapse and accountablity from it even after the issue is dead.

      Sorry, Gip. :)

      • gipper82475 says:

TRS86, The Collapse is an historic fact and, necessarily plays into any analysis of Willie’s job as manager of this franchise.

SNY’s in game director/producers/broadcatsres conspiring to show Willie in a bad light? Not a fact. A paranoid delusion.

        See the difference?

Do you seriously think Bill Webb has it out for Willie?

  10. Booooooooooooooo says:

Look, I’m an ardent defender of Willie, but this guy needs to find a new captain of his brain ship, because the current one is asleep at the wheel.

I mean, he’s not just taking on the NY media, he’s taking on the network owned by his employers. We are getting perilously close to “Buddy Harrelson refusing to do Mets Extra” territory.

  11. kjmcc0729 says:

As noted in Newsday today, some clarification on how the topic of race was raised in the Ian O’connor interview:

O’Connor wrote that Randolph wondered why traits such as calmness that are admired in managers such as Joe Torre are a negative for him.

“Is it racial?” Randolph asked. “Huh? It smells a little bit.”

When asked if black managers are held to different standards, he said: “I don’t know how to put my finger on it, but I think there’s something there. Herman Edwards did pretty well here and he won a couple of playoff , and they were pretty hard on Herm. Isiah didn’t do a great job, but they beat up Isiah pretty good.”

So, Willie was NOT “just” answering a question, as previously reported on this blog, HE raised the issue himself!

    • JSC1968 says:

Not for nothing, and I lknow I’ll get shelled for it, but he’s absolutely right. There is a double standard, always has been, I hope and pray that it won’t always be that way. But, TRUE racial transparency is not something that’s gonna happen anytime soon.

Sorry, as Bruce Hornsby said, “That’s just the way it is.”

  12. iamatwork says:

It’s not like the Wilpons are from some small town and just happened to end up in NY, Fred Wilpon is from Brooklyn which, last time I was there (this morning), is pretty diverse. I don’t think they care about who they hire as long as they get the job done & aren’t out breaking the law. And, well, at least we can agree that Willie isn’t breaking the law.

    • JSC1968 says:

It took a long time to get Willie.

      How old is the franchise?

How many minority coaches have we had? GM’s?

But, the same thing can be said for baseball in general.

The Yanks never had a black manager, though their only black GM (Bob Watson) was responsible for the ascension of the organization in th late 90’s with Buck Showalter.

    • boomingranny says:

Just because he’s from Brooklyn doesn’t mean he can’t be racist.

      • kjmcc0729 says:

All of a sudden we are questioning whether the wilpons are racist? See what Willie started with this crap!

  13. zen says:

sounds contrived to help sny ratings. all their shows are basically a couple of guys yelling and second-guessing the mets.

    let’s go mets.

    • NYMBosco says:

How many passes is this guy going to get? First he manages his team to a colossal collapse last year , then a majority of the Mets fan base is up in arms and bashing willie for his laid back, lifeless team prior to the yankees series and then we hear omar saying he is supporting willie and his job is not in jeapardy. Billy Wagner flips out and Omar and Willie downplay any issues in the clubhouse when everyone knows that there is a real problem and Willie is responsible for his team’s lack of unity. Then he doesn’t get thrown out of the game with the delgado hr/foul ball call, lets his bench coach get thrown out. Unbeliveable! Then when he speaks with a reporter about his management style he suggests racism. No more passes. Willie must go!

  14. metsfan119 says:

Making tongue and cheek race comments to the press. Always a good idea Willie.

  15. krumbledkookie says:

Most seem to disagree, but Willie’s right.

    • AlreadyMissShea says:

Which time? The time he said what he said or the time he said he was just joking?

  16. Danny1986 says:

You all know that not only am I a member of the ‘Fire Willie Club”, but I’m also the President.

However, I will say that if this team just totally outplayed the Yankees at the Stadium, then harnessed that momentum and began a winning streak while playing sound, consistent, fundamental baseball for once in the last 162 games…all is practically forgiven. No need to fire the man. Just keep winning. That is all that matters. Not race. Not the perception of the media. Not Bill Webb’s (one of THE MOST RESPECTED directors in the game….NO ONE has mentioned the point of unfairness to Webb on this topic . Mindboggling.) camera direction on Willie during SNY broadcasts.

But Willie is showing no class right now. IN fact, he is showing a high level of stupidity. What good can come from thses comments? Only bad can come, honestly. The team is arguably on the brink of a turn-around we have all been pleading/begging for over nearly a year, and he goes out and creates a total distraction to the focus and momentum of the TEAM. How phuking ridiculous is this?

JUST WIN!!!! ALL YOUR PROBLEMS GO AWAY WILLIE. WIN!!!!!

    • metsfan119 says:

I guess that would make me the VP. People aren’t against you because you’re black, Willie, they’re against you because you’re an extremely mediocre manager running a $130 million dollar team.

      • gipper82475 says:

I’m treasurer. And, I did mention Bill Webb above. The paranoid delusions are getting out of hand.

Wayto distract from whatever momentum the team had after the visit to the Bronx.

        • Danny1986 says:

what i was implying is that now one in the media has defended Bill Webb. really wierd.

        • Danny1986 says:

          ‘no one’

          i can’t spell today.

        • JSC1968 says:

I reiterate, I think some of you guys are full of bunk, and though you want your team to win, some of you guys take delight in any mishap, misstep that Willie may make.

Now, I’m calling anyone a racist, maybe some of you don’t like him because he’s an Ex-Yankee or he’s short, balding, etc. I don’t know.

But, it’s clear that this guy can do nothing right as far as you guys are concerned. You act like the postseason is a birthright. Hello, how many Met managers made it to the show more than once? Hell, how many made it once?

I also find it funny, that you some of you want Wally Backman, Tim Teufel, Gary Carter or Lee Mazilli to replace him.

How many rings have these guys while serving in a coaching capacity? Maybe that’s unfair, how many games have they won?

How about looking at the proven winner you have as bench coach, but nobody even mentioned him.

        • JSC1968 says:

BTW, I realize that everyone has to start somewhere, but how many years did Willie work and wait and pay his dues in the bigs to get to where he is. Out of my list only Mazilli had any big league coaching experience and his stint at the O’s failed miserably.

But, he’s better than Willie is?

          C’mon people open those eyes.

        • kjmcc0729 says:

          a. the wilpons set the expectation for the playoffs when they spent $140 million dollars.
          b. Manuel has been mentioned, although only recently after he has showed more cajones than willie by getting thrown out of the game.
          c. Mazzilli wasn’t given a fair shake in Baltimore. He had a really, really bad team near 1st place for the first half of the season. He was fired too soon, especially considering how bad the team was, and being in the same division as the yanks and red sox.
          d. What has willie ever won as a manager?

        • JSC1968 says:

          a. Ask Jeff Torborg and the ‘92 Mets about expectations.
          b. He was mentioned on MONDAY, not when the candidate list was constructed HERE on FRIDAY.
          c. True, on second look, the team did not fare any worse with him and would seem to have improved slightly (they still under .500, but less). I STAND CORRECTED.
          d. He was a key member of the coaching staff for the Yanks 4 WS titles. Maz may have been there too, not sure for how many of them.

    • NY Cuban says:

Wow, I thought I was the president, but I’ll take any cabinet position.

I agree that all we need to do is start winning games. I just can’t believe the flip-flopping. I can’t believe he would do this after the Yankee series. It just makes no sense…I used to think he had lost the clubhouse, but now I see he has lost his mind too.

    • JSC1968 says:

Unfortunately, that’s crap too. Alot of Willie bashers, by their own admission have wanted Willie out of there since the Mets lost Gm 7 of 2006. How many games did we win that year?

The leash is just shorter for Willie, period.

For example, and to show that bias isn’t relegated to NY Met fans, let’s look at Joe Girardi.

His team is in last place, the Yanks are chock full of talent, but nobody is screaming for his head.

In fact Joe Girardi, parlayed a 4th place finish w/ the Marlins where management could not show the door fast enough, into one of the best managerial job in baseball, and a Manager of the Year award to boot.

The Marlins weren’t good because of him, they were good, because they have everybody’s blue chip prospects as Freddy Gonzalez is proving this year. Should Freddy win the award this year too?

But, Girardi was better than Willie, even though the team improved dramatically under him. Not enough, Joe wins.

      • kjmcc0729 says:

get a clue man. Girardi won NL manager of the year for keeping a team with a 20 or so million dollar payroll in the wildcard race for almost the entire year. How did fredi do with the same team last year?

And people are beginning to go after girardi. the difference is that this is his 1st year, less than 50 games. Cashman will take the hit first, but if girardi doesn’t perform over the next year or so he won’t be around much longer.

        • JSC1968 says:

Pitching was hurt and performed poorly especially the pen. Where are they this year? And minus Dontrelle and Miguel Cabrera are gone to boot.

Girardi did not outperform Willie, period. We won the division for crying out loud!

The only time it was won by a team not called the Braves for 15 years!!!

  17. giuseppe franco_procede says:

Willie use your the advice you gave to Wagner last week and “shut up”!

  18. CaseStreet says:

Can we have a temporary moratorium on non-baseball related posts? All I care about is the Mets and news that effects whether they’re going to win.

    • RPsJacket says:

Amen. Matt, please, stop the madness. Even the baseball threads get taken over, its like you have to rush over to talk baseball before the Horde takes over.

  19. metsfanmurph says:

I could care less what Willie says to the media. All I care about is getting to the playoffs. What I do like is that since the Mets lost to the Nationals on Thursday, Willie has shown some fire. Willie was on with Fatso and Fruitloops on Friday and he was fired up and maybe that has carried over to the team.

My next point is that I am not one of these Mets fans that cares about the Yankees. I hate the Braves, Phillies, and Cardnials much more than the Yankees. With that said I absolutely loved the two wins this weekend not because they were against the Yankees but because this team showed some life. You could tell that the Mets players were actually pulling for each other which I have not seen since April of 2007. Hopefully this carries over as well.

  20. Stems says:

Matt i think you mean ‘tongue in cheek”

  21. AlreadyMissShea says:

“Prior to today’s game, Willie Randolph told reporters that his remarks from Sunday regarding SNY, race, etc, were ‘tongue and cheek,’ while talking to a reporter, Ian O’Conner from the Bergen Record, who he has known for years.”

OK, I’ve seen a lot of ways for people to defend themselves. I’ve never seen anyone over 12 try the “JUST KIDDING” defense.

At this point I would hope that Willie will just stop talking to the media, manage the team, and win some games. He’s not going to win with this crap one way or another. Let people say what they want. Do the job you were hired to do. No more of this.

    • RPsJacket says:

“At this point I would hope that Willie will just stop talking to the media, manage the team, and win some games. He’s not going to win with this crap one way or another. Let people say what they want. Do the job you were hired to do. No more of this.”

We agree! Lets get on with it, man!

We crushed the Yankees, for pete’s sake. Last place Yankees, but just as sweet! Now we got the Braves, Rockies, Dodgers, and the Fish back at Shea for first place! Give it a rest now, Willie, please.

  22. I_Need_More_Cowbell_Please says:

i hate to say this but this team is turning into the yankees… one media drama after another.

we don’t care about race/ethnicity, just win

  23. therealsince86 says:

Any chance that he is doing this to draw attention away from the team and it’s performance. Kind of an old school Bobby V type move of do something incredibly stupid to get the media to focus on you instead of a few of the players on the team that are struggling?

    • Danny1986 says:

      if the team ws struggling….yes.

But the won 2 in the bronx and scored nearly 20 runs over 2 games. They aren’t struggling. In fact, there is plenty of positive things to focus on right now.

And that is why this makes no sense.

    • beltran the warrior says:

it’s working because the talking bobbleheads on this site would rather see their manager get fired than be pumped about ryan church and john maine and hoping delgado is on the way back.

      baseball-related posts? what are those?

      • Danny1986 says:

cmon…the general sentiment today is for willie to shut up and win. we are more shocked than grinding axes.

        • beltran the warrior says:

i understand that, danny, and i respect your opinion moreso than a great majority on this site but at some point the plot gets lost.

regardless of what happens, for this team to go somewhere, it comes down to a few factors (reyes, castillo, wright, beltran, church, alou, delgado, schneider, pitcher) that’s all i care about, the rest are tabloids and people here have lost sight of that and that’s a problem.

        • Danny1986 says:

yeah….some will use ANYTHING to justify their fire willie sentiment. And you certinaly have those appearing today. But i am sensing more people, including those usual suspects, are actually more shocked at Willie’s comments than they are using it as fuel on the fire.

Tabloids and negativity cause us to lose sight….but Willie honestly brought this one on himself.

        • beltran the warrior says:

well, the obligatory damage control has been done so let’s hope this is over and we can focus on this doubleheader.

i’m not going to hold my breath.

    • zerosum says:

You may have a point there in him doing this to get the attention away from his players. *** In my opinon, you have to be quite naive to not believe that race plays a HUGE part in everyday life in the United States. That means in going to school, going to work, shopping at the mall, going to the corner store, asking directions in a town you have never been in etc. Of course he’s held under a different light than Joe Girardi or even Bobby V… Anything he does will be jumped on by the majority white writers. I don’t know why? Maybe some people here wouldn’t know why either because they weren’t brought up that way. I can take a stab at the reason though. The sad truth is a lot of these people in the media were brought up a different way. They have it embedded inside them that blacks naturally can’t do a good a job as a white person can. So when they see a black person getting a high profile job like coach of the NY Knicks, NY Jets or NY Mets, they just cannot wait until the first instance that this black person messes up so they can jump all over them. And you can say to yourself, “Man that is really messed up, I thought we were passed that.” But we’re not— There are millions of white people out there that haven’t evolved in their thinking regarding racial matters. The writers know that. They know they can generate income for the Media outlet they work at from these same people. It’s a no win situation for people like Willie Randolph. All these fans saying stuff like why doesn’t he go out there and yell his head off at that umpire for that botched home run call and other calls during his tenure here. Why doesn’t he? Why? Well cause he knows and I know that the minute he goes out there and blows up at an umpire all you will here will be the chatter of people saying “Look at Randolph, you can take him out of the Ghetto but can’t take the Ghetto out of him” or things like “He looks like a low class Gangta like in all those Rap videos” or any other various underhanded racial comments you can come up with. He knows that. I feel sorry for him, I do. But not as much as I feel sorry for the people out there that can’t get past a person’s race. And why should he shut up. Society seems to be heading in the direction of having the Mainstream Media think for you. Why should he cater to them? Like I said before, it’s a no win situation for Willie. So why not just say “F*** the writers, I don’t need to cater to them, they should cater to me” In this O’Connor article, all Willie did was give everyone a dose of reality. Even though he’s saying today it was tounge and cheek. He knows the truth and so do I.

      • MealTicket says:

        You speak the truth.

      • big shea says:

And there it is my friend, the race card!

        • zerosum says:

There is no “card”. The only “card” there is, is the card that white people carry to hide the fact taht they have not evolved in racial matters. Just like the way sports writers say “The National league is weaker than the American League” Is that really true? If it is why is the National League considered a Major League? Shouldn’t it be minor league then? Can’t you say the records of National League teams show that there is more “Parity” than in the American League? It’s the same thing with the race card. C’mon white people embrace the truth, once you do it will be better for all of us…

        • Danny1986 says:

Curious….did you type that while sitting in a pue of a certain SouthSide Chicago church?

You say white people carry the card. All billion+ of us. Way to generalilze and actually show YOUR ignorance..

you have VERY LITTLE CLUE as to what you are talking about.

        • Danny1986 says:

now go ahead…..call me a racist for disagreeing with you. Isn’t that the formula?

        • zerosum says:

That’s the only way for you to understand, is to generalize. But anyway, I didn’t say ALL whitepeople, in my original post I said “There are millions of white people out there that haven’t evolved in their thinking regarding racial matters” And I think that’s pretty accurate. I mean look at what you said, “All billion+ of us” which is your way of re-affirming that the white people are a majority. Why are you so paranoid? Relax, white person, it will be OK. What formula are you talking about? If there is a formula, then there would be a way to correct this thinking of the unevolved white people. I see your illegal alien remark, you just prove my point even more. LOL

        • Danny1986 says:

The only one who is unevolved in this conversation is you.

          It’s not even worth discussing.

        • zerosum says:

        • Danny1986 says:

No. It’s just obvious that I am dealing with a juvenile with an extremely myopic view of the limited world he lives in, but still perceives it to be the truth.

So I just don’t care what you have to say. And obviously neither does anyone else here.

I regret that I took the bait.

        • zerosum says:

A juvenile. LOL If I’m a juvenile then your an infant. You still have yet to come up with any sort of counter arguements. All you say is “I don’t care, I don’t care” like a 5 year old. And I didn’t write that original post to get a response you fool. Believe me if someone were able to come up with valid opposing viewpoints, they would of already. But they can’t. Because I say what’s real and what’s the truth.

          But, it is worth it.

Especially when folks thinks that the Mets are LOS METS and not just The Mets.

  24. tfc3rid says:

I think based on all this nonsense, Willie wants out…

  25. AlreadyMissShea says:

It’s bad because casual fans who also spend their money are not going to stick around through this kind of stuff. This team had better put together a winning streak now, because if not this is just going to look like a big joke to people who don’t follow the team as closely as people who post on these blogs do. And the casual fan’s money is good too… Too much more of this kind of publicity without some good baseball getting played, and they’re gonna take their business somewhere else. Maybe not everyone here cares about those people, but I can assure you the Wilpons do.

  26. MrMetsLuvChild says:

I am so tired of all these other issues we are focusing on. I just want to win some games and move on so all of this goes away. I watched MetsClassics last night which showed a 1999 game against the Yankees which Matt Franco won with a 2 run single off Mariano. Watching that game made me realize how much fun that ‘99 team was to watch and how much I enjoyed that team. I wish I could have that same feeling for this team but all this other nonsense makes it nearly impossible.

  27. Tim in LA says:

What a joke. The press was so on his side for so long. They’ve only started finally to be objective.

    • JSC1968 says:

No, they were just slow to pick up on what the fans were saying. In the end, they want you to watch and read their spew.

  28. dykstraw says:

um castillo just hit a hr

  29. kandiman says:

Luis Castillo hit a home run, is gameday making a mistake? Can we get visual confirmation??

  30. Metlomaniac says:

While I’m sure that Willie addressed the media about this at the urging of Mets management, I’m glad he’s trying to get out in front of this, but “tongue in cheek”? Does anyone really believe he was joking when he made those comments? That’s almost as bizarre as claiming SNY is trying to make him look bad.

At this point, Willie has to refuse to discuss this any further. Just say he made his statement (as woeful as it may have been) and he won’t discuss it any more. No good can come out of this.

    Now beat the Braves!

  31. MealTicket says:

Well, I certainly wouldn’t want a manager who “takes on the media.” No-siree. The media represent all that is good and noble in our society. They would NEVER stoop to manufacturing a story just to play a game of gotcha with a public figure. Never! In fact, I’m insulted that anyone might suggest such a disrespectful idea. Disgraceful.

In fact, I think “taking on the media” should be a criminally punishable offense. After all they’ve done for us…

You be nice to those sweet, kind reporters now Willie. If you know what’s good for ya.

    • Metlomaniac says:

Nobody’s arguing that the media is “good and noble”, just the opposite. The issue is that taking on the media is a sucker’s game because itwill always have the last word. It also makes a convenient scapegoat when things aren’t going well.

  32. zen says:

it’s not a surprise that a vocal willie emerged right after the team meeting. this was planned. expect more of it.

    • therealsince86 says:

Guys enough of this, can we talk about the game? That goes for the pro and anti Willie’s and the guys like me that don’t give a crap either way.

  33. Brooxy says:

what does race have to do with managing a pitching staff. i dont hate willie cause he’s black, i hate him cause he uses 8 pitchers a game and then wonders why they’re all burnt out in august.

    • beltran the warrior says:

eight pitchers a game, huh? ever think that maybe if the pitchers he brought in did their jobs, the ones who were somewhat reliable wouldn’t get burnt out?

    • JSC1968 says:

LOL!! Because we had no 4th or 5th starters.

      Can you say Brian Lawrence?

  34. Don Hahn says:

plain and simple, I don’t know if Willie is that smart, he showed tremendous ignorance in his comments

    • zerosum says:

Well he’s smart enough to keep himself up physically, get through the difficult daily grind of being a baseball player for many years. He’s smart enough to not make bad decisions with the riches that are rewarded to him from playing his game. He’s smart enough to not give up and keep at it in coach role for the Yankees because he knew it would eventually pay off and now he is manager of one of the most valuable sports franchises in the entire world. He’s smart enough to know not to trust the media. Or do you mean he’s not smart enough cause he’s black and he’s speaking the truth in his comments???? Oh, yes of course that’s it…

      • mkepzza31 says:

who do you think you are playing the race card? you have no clue what goes on in my mind, so stop telling me what i think and how i feel about racial issues…racism goes both ways my friend, I see it every day since I live in an area with both whites and blacks…get over it and stop talking about race, lets talk about the fact that the most talented team in the nl is barely .500 since the middle of last season and his team choked…he is arrogant and talks down to everyone who interviews him since he thinks that nobody else’s opinion is as valuable as his because he was a professional ball player and god forbid anyone who didn’t play in the majors actually have an opinion on his coaching…he is a lousy manager, because not only does he not have a feel for the game as a coach but he obviously has no clue how to do deal with people…Tom Coughlin, a white coach, was killed by the media, and he only went out and won the super bowl because he realized his faults and improved…willie is a joke

        • mkepzza31 says:

I refer to coughlin being white since Willie claims that he is attacked because of his race, but coughlin was attacked as badly if not worse

  35. zen says:

willie is only hurting himself. the sny broadcast is loved by fans. it would have been smarter if he went after all the second-guessing shows after and before the game.

the media loves to dish out criticism, but can’t handle it. gary cohen always has little digs going after willie. today gary has it in high gear. throwing out an art howe reference in relation to glavine.

    media=soft

  36. No_Brain_Willie says:

Bold statements by a not so bold guy.

  37. big shea says:

Can I reference ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm” real quick?

Remember the episode when Larry didn’t want to fire his cable guy because he was black. And when he mentioned it to Jeff, he responded, “Who cares if he’s black? If he sucks, he sucks!”

I think that explains this situation a bit.

  38. GregB says:

“to me, willie is starting to seem very, very paranoid”

paranoid? how can you say that when all he has to do is pick up a newspaper, turn on the tv or radio, or visit a sports website and find thousands of people calling for him to be fired.

that’s not being paranoid, that’s being observant!

  39. Don Hahn says:

Just because someone does well financially doesn’t make them smart, a lot of ballplayers have advisors in that area, and god bless him, I wish the man no harm, I actually like him, but just because I don’t think he’s that smart as ‘zerosum’ suggest, does that make me a racist? he’s been blessed in a lot of ways, but the way he has handled this team, media, and fans, has been incredibly ignorant, is there racism in this world ? of course, I’ve been rooting for the man, but he puts his foot in his mouth, he’s a raw nerve and you just can’t be that in this city, especially after this team just put out a fire in the clubhouse, he ignites another, does that sound smart?, and I don’t know if firing him is an option, because who do you want to replace him? Lee Mazzilli? what made him such a great manager?

  40. Don Hahn says:

I will give ” zerosum’ credit, you have definitely opened up a interesting conversation, I don’t agree with you, but this country is blind if they don’t think racism is alive and well, probably more covert than in the past, but I just feel you are off base with this one

    • mkepzza31 says:

racism is alive and well, but i believe that professionals, such as media, would try not to alienate some of their readers, and they wouldn’t want to lose their jobs, so they would at least hide it if they felt that way…

  41. Don Hahn says:

Aaron Heilman? god what happened to you, the new Doug Sisk

  42. upstatemetfan says:

    BRING BOBBY V back!!!!!!!!!!
