The Mets took two of two from the Yankees this past weekend, and will travel to Atlanta to play four games against the Braves starting this afternoon.
Ryan Church, talking to reporters on Sunday, on beating the Yankees and whether it provides momentum heading in to Atlanta, said:
“There’s some momentum, this is where we should start making a run…(The double-header on Tuesday) is gonna be huge, gonna be tough. Hopefully we come out ready to play.”
Carlos Delgado, on the same topic, said on Sunday:
“It’s a big lift. We came in (to the Bronx), we played some good baseball…Hopefully it’s a nice building block…We’ve just got to continue to do what we’re doing…We need to go down to Atlanta and have the same approach.”
Willie Randolph, on the same subject, and the team meeting’s impact from Friday, said:
“It’s only two games…We just need to build off of this. We have a big series coming up with Atlanta. Hopefully this is where we start to take off. There a lot of teams around the league that have sputtered up and down and we’re no different, hopefully we’re ready to hit our stride. We’ll see…
“I will say this, talking to them in [Yankee Stadium], I found myself getting very emotional, thinking about Thurman, Catfish, Reggie, Lou and all the others and all the winning we did here. We won because we played smart. We played the game right. We hustled. We were accountable to each other and, yeah, we even fought sometimes.”
David Wright, on going to Atlanta after the hype of playing the Yankees, as quoted by the New York Post:
“We can’t have a letdown series. The Subway Series can be physically and mentally draining, so it’s going to be a challenge for us to bring the same intensity to Atlanta that we had [at Yankee Stadium].”

Matt…it’s a 4 game series with 2 today and then 1 each tomorrow and Thursday.
Bet you wish you were a TurnerVendor….overtime today baby!!!
Never!! LOL…Actually I only vended at Shea for one season waaaaaaaaay back in 1983!! It was a blast though.
SheaVendor,
I went to the rainout on Friday night at Yankee Stadium. Bought myself and my woman each a 16oz cup of beer. How much did it cost me? Quick.
your first born?
Ollie…in 1983 that would have cost you about 5 bucks total!! Today?? 15.00?
First born is only for Heineken. Bud Light only costs you an arm and a leg.

-David….are you serious? Better not have a let down series vs. a divisional rival.
exactly what i was thinking…can’t just get hyped for the fluff of the subway series…they need to get hyped for the series that counts…
bingo…my thoughts exactly…subway series doesnt really mean too much in my book…4 games at atlanta…we will definatly know where we rank in our division. LGM
Right but I think what he meant was that it’s difficult to have 2 mentally/physically draining series back to back. Of course atlanta is more important, but it doesn’t mean it’s easy to bring momentum and intensity from one series to the next. Obviously it isn’t, especially for this team. I think that was his point.
That is what he meant and he is accurate to reflect on it before the series. The team has to be desperate for some wins and act desperate on the field with the play in order to start reeling of some sustained streaks of good play.
Today should be fun with Glavine. I hope they watch video of the game he f’d up in Florida last year to end the season just so they get inspired to rock him.
The key to Glavine will be waiting out his junk and forcing him to throw strikes. His stuff is so mediocre that a very patient approach with him will do wonders for the offense. MAke him throw 100 pitches in 5 innings. Take walks, go deep in counts etc. Wait out the pitch he has to throw for a strike and then capitalize on him. He still lives on the corners and his stuff is so diminished that a patient team should really be able to get to him. he is crafty and wise but eminently beatable with very pedestrian stuff at this point in his career.
You are right.
The video of this was on SNY after the Sunday night game and the second part of his statement isn’t included in the quote in which he states Atlanta is the more important of the two series from a standings perspective.
I understand that the atmosphere in Atlanta is vastly different than that of the Bronx. However, as a player on this team, I think you need to circle the games vs. Philly, Atlanta, and perhaps the Yanks to start the season.
Now, if he said they have to guard against a let down in Colorado….that I could buy. But if you want to get technical about it, they got embarassed out there pretty good last July. Could make a case for revenge.
turner field isn’t exactly an inspiring place either .. going from the atmosphere at Yankee stadium : intense energy, fans into every pitch, into that energy sucking tomahawk siren hole, half empty, with the people there barely paying attention, unless they’re told to do the stupid oohhh ohhh ohhhh chant. The place will be a tomb this afternoon I’m sure. It will be a challenge to keep the energy levels up for sure. Hopefully the boys are up to the challenge.
You obviously don’t know what you are talking about. I guess you’re just already trying to make excuses for the Mutts losing by blaming the Atlanta fans for not being New Yawkers. And I don’t think the boys will be up to the challenge.
I can’t believe I am agreeing with the ATL troll, but they have to find their own intensity, it can’t matter anymore who/where they play. They should be beyond that now if they truly learned anything from past failure, which is what they have stated publicly.
The Braves stink, although they play well at home. They are on the 162 game schedule, that should be all the motivation they need.
And you are right, I don’t think the Braves are up for the challenge, either…you had a real nice run, it is, and has been, over.
Dear Jose Reyes,
Please stay hot.
Regards,
The Fans
lolll yea he needs to stay hot if we are going to stand a chance out in death vally…..
It’s going to be tough to stay as hot after leaving the friendly confines of the Bronx. My guess is that Jose’s next home run comes in Williamsport…home of the Phillies.
that’s OK, I’ll take triples off the wall.
This is much more important series than the Yankees. The Phils have dropped three in a row and the Bravos are 4-6 in their last 10. Time to put some distance between us.
LET’S GO METS!!
They are also 16-5 in Turner Field.
Sports dog…amen brother – The Hulckster
Shea Vendor?
The same shea vendor from SILive?
The Braves have been remarkably resilient considering they have a ton of pitchers on the DL including 2/5ths of their starting rotation and their primary closer in Soriano.
But the time for us to make the move is now. I will feel much better about this team if they get themselves in the next 30 days to 10 games over .500. That is the first measuring stick. From there they can either continue to add a game or two over .500 per week to reach the goal of winning the division or they can flounder around for a while and still remain in the hunt.
the way it has been so far….one bad week and they can be the nats.
I think that this is the series where we find out if this team is full of sh$t or they’re actually here to play good baseball. We’ll see if all this talk-talk-talk is getting them anywhere. Yes they pounded on the Yankees, but in reality that doesn’t mean squat. They pounded on a weak team that is built around hitting and that didn’t have its two best hitters in the lineup. But it wasn’t about the wins. It’s about the fundamentals – everyone knows that. It’s about playing hard and giving it 110%. It’s a long season but as professionals their 110% has to come EVERY game, no matter how tired they might get in the long run. Let’s see if the Mets can perform at their best, let’s see Willie prove that he can motivate these guys, let’s see if there’s a leader among them. Saddle up, boys! Let’s burn the house down in Atlanta! You’ll rest in the winter!
LETS GO METS
I find your comment about “burning the house down in Atlanta” to be very insensitive. I thought everyone in New York was politically correct.
insensitive to what?
Insensitive to a Braves fan who paid John Rocker’s salary for how many years? Bum.
PC in NYC? I guess he missed Willie’s comments about our racist tendencies for mistaking His divine judgment as the delusional thinking of a person out of touch with reality.
Kind of interesting that your players do NONE of those things anymore – well, except for the bickering.
You’re the one who’s bickering right now. How about you exhibit the right attitude as a fan!
No, I’m expressing my opinion. Didn’t know I wasn’t allowed to do that.
Do you think that might be what he is trying to get them to do?
Anyway, I was listening to what I guess was fox radio last night with some sports guy and he was goind on and on about some divide in the club house and how the Met’s were the Amazing Mess. Black manager, Latin GM who has reached out to the latin press more than the US. Bunch of Latin players and white players that don’t get along. That Wagner was calling out Delgado, Beltran, and Reyes because they never talk to the reporters, blah blah blah.
This is why I did not like Wagner’s comments because now even as old as the story is, it is still being picked on and used against the Mets.
I just wonder, did Omar refuse to give this guy a job or what, he really seemed to have it out for the Mets last night.
People associated with Fox Sports are generally morons (see Joe Buck). I don’t think anyone takes these people seriously…
On this we agree. Although I’d expand that statement to all Fox entities, especially Fox News.
You are entitled to your opinion, and alot of what you say has merit. But every post degenerates into the same thing. I think they can win 10 straight and it won’t change at all.
It may have started to be about their performance, but it is something entirely different now.
LETS GO MAINE!! Remember when we had to hope there’d be a plate ump who was giving the corners all game, as that’s the only way he mediocre pitch would get outs. well, lets hope GLav doesn’t get the corners called. Be patient, or take him the other way. Lets go Boys, keep the W streak going.
oh and I also hope Texiera goes 0-fer so everyone finally gets outta his jock.
The other way? I say Delgado and Church crush his 85 mph fastball to the upper deck in right!
either way will work! I’m fired up for this series. Lets Go Mets! I hope the baseball package gives us Gary, Ron and Keith. best booth ever!
85? No way. He’d be lucky to crack 83.
Funny, Glavine has ben more effective against righties (.263 BA) than lefties (.323 BA) so far this year.
Of note, Church is only 1-12 lifetime against him.
Wright and Reyes have never faced him. Degado, .588 with 0 homers.
and it looks like schneider hits him pretty well, 10 for 37.
Curious to see the lineup today.
Couldn’t make the 1pm game today but I’ll be there tonight and again on Thursday when Santana is on the mount. I can’t friggin’ wait!!
LET’S GO METS!!!!
I will be arriving in ATL at 8:30 thurs night, friends offered tickets.
Looks like I will be meeting them after the game, though. Santana – Hudson, sweet!
Enjoy!
how is this thread (the most important topic of the day) get 40 posts, and one that points out that ‘Willie is a black manager” is just went above the Mendoza line?
That is preposterous.
Hey, don’t let baseball get in the way of a good “fire willie” rant.
“I found myself getting very emotional, thinking about Thurman, Catfish, Reggie, Lou and all the others and all the winning we did here. We won because we played smart. We played the game right. We hustled. We were accountable to each other and, yeah, we even fought sometimes.”
Funny, that reverential litany of Skankees as examples for teh Mets by Willie makes me emotional too – well, maybe not emotional….is nauseous an emotion?
