As noted yesterday, Pedro Martinez is scheduled to throw a bullpen session this afternoon at Turner Field in Atlanta, under the watchful eye of the team’s coaching staff.
Yesterday, Willie Randolph told reporters that he does not think Martinez should rush back to start next week in Colorado.
…as i wrote yesterday, from what i can gather, Claudio Vargas will likely get the start against the Rockies, though i can’t help but think his start last night may have hurt that idea…nevertheless, like i said, and which is supported by willie’s words, it is possible that pedro slots in to the rotation the next time around, which could mean he is back for the Dodgers at Shea…

Can Pedro hit with RISP?
Vargas only threw about 67 pitches yesterday. Don’t think it will kill him. Yeah, the results weren’t perfect, but he didn’t do that bad, and it was only his 2nd start of the year.
Desperate times, desperate measures, right?
lol thats right stick. 4 runs is alot but still within a game. They threatened to come back at the end and cut it in half. They should not rush petey to return. We will need him more to toward the second half of the year anyway…
yup, by pulling him on the short pitch count they set it up for him to pitch on 3 days rest.
It will likely be his last, or next to last start with the Mets anyway, unless he starts dominating. Armas Jr. is looking like a better bet right now, and Pedro should be soon on the horizon.
Maybe Pedro will have the same effect on this team as he did last year when he came back…Unfortunately that effect wore off after about a week. Guess we’ll see. Mets have more problems than just starting pitching right now.
I’m going that Saturday vs the Dodgers, hopefully he is back then.
I’ll ramble here a bit.
Given the circus the team has become, even the Wilpons hadve to (right?) come to the conclusion that Willie needs to go, and quick.
But, hopefully they decide to areally make some changes (beyond Willie and probably a bunch of the coaches). Let Omar clear out some of the roster problems at the same time, even if it means eating payroll (although not much).
Since the current group isn’t working, bring in some fresh blood.
See if they can trade Delgado to the AL for any live body, and eat salary. They are paying him anyway, so it is a sunk cost.
Try and trade Castillo too, although that may be impossible.
Clean out the bench if it ain’t working. Also figure out the answer for the pen.
Some of this might be painful or embarrassing for Omar, but heck, if willie isn’t embarrassing him enough, what the heck. He’s fighting for a job too.
Not sure what they get back for the big club, but call up guys to fill in the holes (not that Castillo and Delgado are that big of a hole to fill).
Really, the core talent to carry the team is still in place. I am advocating dumping the dead wood holding them back.
You want to send a message, eliminating Delgdo and Castillo from the team and replacing them with prospects that are going to play 110% all the time (fighting to keep a job) will be like putting the paddles on a guy whose heart has stopped.
Let Oberkfell take over as manager.
Say they called up one of the young SS/2B guys (Reyes? Or the other one) and Carp and Evans to replace Delgado, Castillo and Tatis. You honestly think the team would be worse? If nothing else, it would be way younger, more athletic, hungrier, etc. With a fresh leader and attitude.
Replace some of the BP problems (wise, Heilmann,) with Muniz, Kunz, Vargas/Pelfrey (when Pedro comes back). Again, fresh blood and ttitude.
OK< I am done now.
I dont think they are that desprite yet but you could see alot of that next year i think…Remember just because we are replacing dead wood doesnt mean the new parts are going to do awsome either. What if the newcomers fail worse than who they took over. The mets have a new stadium and a tv station they need to keep bringing in money. Granted this bunch doesnt look like they will achieve much at the moment but people still watch in hopes that they will. I posted in another topic about this but i dont know where this problem started and whats the source. I just hope omar and company figure it out quick or the mets are in deep trouble
Well, I think that people will still watch and attend the gmaes (maybe more!) if they got rid of the guys I mentioned, and how much worse can the team do? If anything, it might energize the reast of the team (the talented part).
I am not advocating trading DW, Reyes, etc. and playing no names, and certainly am not saying concede the season. Just get rid of a couple of guys that are underperforming, dragging the team down (IMO), and frankly, that most fans hate.
Cititfield will be sold out anyway, whether the Mets make the playoffs or not this year (with the current group, or some younger guys).
Like I said, these are spare parts we are talking aobut (complimnetary players, not stars). Even though there seems to be some perception (at least by them) that they are still starts, which IMO, is a big part of the problem.
I agree that young energy might be an answer to the teams problems, however:
a) No one would want Delgado considering his current batting, salary, and FA after this year. Plus there’s always hope that he’ll find his swing again;
b) Castillo was signed because of his defense and ability to move a runner over. He does need to play more, but with Easley spelling him, I’m not that concerned about 2B.
Also, Omar has shown that he wants the best arms on the team. Look at Figgy and Sosa.
Finally, I don’t think getting rid of Willie is the answer. It’s not like he’s a defensive coordinator calling plays and new schemes. Willie’s role is far less influential on how the team performs. The players must get their heads out of their butt and play consistently. Then and only then will we win.
CaseStreet, I agree with your last point. Though I’ve been an advocate of Willie, in light of the media storm he is kicking up, it might be time for him to go….I really don’t think he is doing it to take the spotlight off the players, as some have said.
But the thing is, just because Willie goes doesn’t mean that this team is magicall going to turn it on, and follow a game plan, hit less established pitchers, and sustain any sort of momentum. I do believe its a player problem, but as they say, you can’t fire the player.
Who is pitching sat. vs the rockies?
maine or vargas on short rest?
Is Vargas a fly ball pitcher? I’d be a bit wary of pitching Maine in that park. But then again he does pitch in Philly. But I heard Willie saying one of the reasons he pulled Vargas was to bring him back on short rest.
Maine will not pitch on short rest, you can take that to the bank. Vargas should as he is a disposable player, but I’m not sure they will try it. his 66 pitch outing suggests they are thinking of it as an option.
Any idea what day it could be? I miss Pedro.
Ill believe it when i see it. There is no need to rush pedro IMO. I would love to have his enthusiasm and energy here but frankly if hes not ready hes not ready. Vargas has been a decent replacement for him so far and can buy pedro a few more weeks of rest and practice.
Pedro is now a myth. he is a name that sounds nice
I dont understand this lets not rush him back, it was a hamstring problem not an arm issues. He walked off the field on his own power for the most part and hasnt pitched in almost two months. So he should be healed by now, or they wouldnt have him throwing off a mound.
Willie must stop playing anderson and easely so much. they are bench guys. why can larry jones play 2 yesterday and moses alou cant?
Alou is 6 years older, and considerably more brittle.
Well Jones is 36 and Alou will be 42 in July. I agree it would have been nice to have him play both games but he has been saying he’s been sore lateley.
I think the big problem here is how badly our bench guys have performed. Easley has been beyond awful and anderson and chavez have done almost nothing. These are all guys who have made big contributions in the past few years. I still feel confident is Castro as a backup but Willie never uses him as a pinch hitter so the only time he can help is when he starts for Schneider. I really thought our bench would be a strength going into this year but we have gotten almost nothing out of it.
alou is not more brittle. larry gets urt every day
Ha! I don’t think I’ve met or heard of anyone who is more brittle than Alou, especially since he turned 40.
Seriously though, Jones has averaged 140 games played since 2000, Alou has averaged 126. Alou hasn’t even reached 100 games in the past two years and it would take a miracle for him to reach 100 this year.
Right now he’s our best pure hitter- it seems as though he has given up on hitting for power but can hit .350 at will. There is no need to play him a in the night game of a double header, especially when the outfield was in terrible condition after the rain (another reason Jones was more likely to play as the infield was kept dry).
Pedro coming back is nice, but who honestly believes he can win more than 8 games for us. Even that’s a stretch.
With Pedro back, I love the rotation. Who would have thought the offense would be this bad?
If we can’t score off Jorge Campillo, we should just give Pedro the year off.
Vargas wasn’t that bad last night. He had one bad inning and Willie pulled him for a pinch hitter to get some offense going. Had the Mets put some runs on the board things may have gone differently. Consider that the Mets scored 1 run for Vargas last time out, and yesterday 2 (after he was gone).
We need Pedro’s heart back on this club.
not good news for Pedro or Met fans
Pedro Martinez returned to the Dominican Republic on Wednesday after learning that the condition of his sick father had worsened.
