Ryan Church left tonight’s game with a concussion, suffered while trying to break up a game-ending double play.
According to the team, Church will be taken to the hospital.
Willie Randolph, on Church:
“He was pretty dazed when I got out there. He was pretty glazed over…Any time you get a shot to the head like that it’s always concerning, so we really have to watch him.”
…it was pretty ugly…he slid in to second, and escobar basically kicked him right in the face…church was on the ground for a good 10 minutes, before being walked off the field looking rather out of it – to say the least…
Church suffered a concussion during spring training, after colliding in the outfield with Marlon Anderson.

Get well soon Church.
On TV, they said that he never went “out”.
However, when I watched the video, it looked like after he was hit in the head by the knee, that he was out for a second or so, but immediately before, at and immediately after impact with the ground.
If you see the way his face impacted the ground, he put up no resistance to the impact. Someone would generally prepare for impact, put of there hands to brace themself or move the head or neck away. His head looked like a rag doll just prior and through impact, which makes me think he was out for just that second.
Was definitely not pretty. Hopefully he gets better soon, and it does not take away his fire.
Honestly, I’m fairly certain the concussion resurfaced when he crashed in the wall down the RF line early in the game, when Escobar tagged and took 2nd… he was dazed/glazed, and was blinking pretty erratically….. check the tape.
then the 2 hard slides into 2nd to break up DP’s were the icing on the cake….i’m sure we’ve all noticed he’s very timid around those walls out there ever since spring training…i had a bad feeling we’d been seeing this again… not the best time for it.
Only one word sums this up: Crap…
Hopefully he just misses the rest of the roadtrip and will be fine. The postgame host did say that it was a minor concussion and he should be fine… Church was the only one on this team who played with heart, they are going to play horribly without him. I was hoping Church would be traded to the mets when I saw him play for the Expos, and I was so happy when they got him. He’s a warrior. He better get back on the field soon!
I am not going to get into a false panic here, but for the sake of Willie Randolph and the entire team…
The next two games are must win games. Sorry. Have to win em.
um…. its may?
That doesn’t mean they aren’t must win games. If they lose both they will be under .500, Willie will be on the express lane to unemployed land, etc. That doesn’t make it impossible for the Mets to rebound, but I am merely projecting into the future what I think will happen if they lose these two games…
i usually agree with the sentiments that it is still early, and there’s time left, but phantaroth is right…these next two games are must win games…no question
Its that attitude that is killing this team. Its not early at all its getting LATE! How many series must we loose before its not early anymore? We went 3-4 at home against last place teams and we have a 10 game road trip that we are now 2-2 on, thats only 500. If that makes you happy thats great. This team lacks confidence and fire and are content with 500 baseball, like its fans. I will say its a long season and IM not happy with the teams play right now, but, its where you end that matters. Look at the NL East champion Phillies :} LETS GO METS !!
“um…. its may?”
That’s the kind of attitude that has you buried in September.
yeah…one more game or two more games in may last year…we wouldn’t be having all this panic…i don’t want to hear this “it’s early” stuff…it goes along with the same attitude of “things happen, slumps happen, stuff happens, what can you do”…
YOU CAN NEVER SETTLE AND ALWAYS WANT TO DO BETTER…that is the championship attitude…mediocre play is not tolerated…we all know it happens…we don’t need to hear you accepting it…how about saying…we played mediocre baseball…we need to be hungrier…we can’t be happy with “things happening”
Is it just me or was today one of the worst days for NY baseball in a long time? The only nice part about today was reflecting on Piazza’s career.
I hope Church has a speedy recovery for his sake…not the Mets. Church plays baseball like it’s supposed to be played.
I hope the Mets team physician has enough power to keep Church out of the line up until it’s truley safe for him to return. Two concussions in this short time frame increases his risk of a more serious brain injury if he is rushed back too fast.
Get well and stay healthy Ryan Church!
The sad thing is, after the way this mets played today, this was actually the least depressing part of the day, which is really saying something. I hope he gets well soon.
Get well Chuchie! Without you this team will be harder to watch. If that were possible.
I love his football mentality, we could use about 6 more Ryan Churches
Yeah, especially since he’s on pace to have about a dozen concussions this year.
I think watching his face drag on the dirt was even worse than the initial head punt.
Ugh of course it would be Church. This guy’s a gamer though. He gains my respect more every day.
“he slid in to second, and escobar basically kicked him right in the face”
it’s amazing how people can look at something and see different things…Church didn’t slide right…it was his fault, not Escobar’s.
Yeah, he expected Church to be sliding and did the standard over-the-top leap, but Church was sort of sideways crouched instead of sliding. Poor guy. Brutal hit.
The booth guys were talking about it after the game. It was kind of a weird play. Escobar’s momentum was taking him hard towards first, and he got there so quick that he was right on top of Church at the point where he’d normally start his slide. By the time either of them realized, it was too late. Can’t really fault either one, although the onus should be on Escobar to control his feet a bit better and get his momentum moving out of the basepath.
Escobar was so far in front of the bag and moving so fast Church cannot be blamed here. Not saying Escobar was at fault, but he probably should have gotten over a little.
I hate the Braves, but you could really see the difference in Philly fans and Atlanta by the reaction to a visiting injured player laying face down on the infield. Atlanta did the right thing by not cheering the injury itself, but giving him an ovation when he gets up and makes his way off the field. Unlike Philthy fans cheering possible neck injuries.
I missed the end of the game but on Church’s earlier try to break up a double play, escobar got the worse of it, and the braves homernouncers were like “oh come oooonnN!!! What a dirty slide!!!!!!” Did they say anything like “good he deserves it for the earlier play” in the 9th?????
I really enjoy watching Church play. He has quickly become my favorite Met. Always hustling, always making smart plays. Battles at the plate.
Hopefully he isn’t out long. It will be tough to watch this bunch without him. With multiple concussions in this time span you have to be careful. A concussion is a bruise on the brain and they heal much slower than bruises to other parts of the body. Once concussed it becomes easier to suffer concussions in the future.
I think Church is going to be out for more than this road trip, probably the rest of the month. Like it was said before, two concussions in three months is not a good thing. It’s a shame because he is the only one doing anything for this team. It would also be a shame if he didn’t make the All-Star team.
when it rains it pours…our mvp gets taken out on a freakish play.
Get well soon church
YOU WILL BE MISSED……
time for other guys to step up and carry the ballclub…hopefully this will be a blessing in disguise…..
Get well, Ryan Church.
Apart from being far and away the team MVP, you are also the heart and soul. Maybe you aren’t in the clubhouse (we wouldn’t know that), but we know you are on the field. B/C that is what we see. And we appreciate it.
Concussed…pretty much how the fanbase feels at this point.
Has Willie been fired yet?
Well, now there will be no hitting in the Mets lineup.
And next time Escobar gets up, he should be drilled. The Mets need to get angry and start playing like it.
Escobar did nothing wrong, he was trying to avoid him
WE SHOULD HAVE KEPT LASTINGS MILLEDGE!!!!
ha…
Um, get back at Escobar? The analysts were saying that Escobar was “nice” because he actually tried to get out of the way of Church instead of making him get down. Also, like someone stated earlier, the ball was hit so sharply and the play developed so quickly that Escobar’s momentum took him to where Church would normally begin to slide. It was no one’s fault, and there wasn’t dirty intentions on either player. In fact, I liked the fact that most of the Atlanta players stayed on the field to check on Church (and even Kelly Johnson was calling for the medical staff when he saw blood).
I love the way Church plays. Even down 6-2 with a potential game ending double play he hustled and tried a take-out slide. Unfortunately, he got hurt. Hopefully he’ll get better real soon.
If he needs any real time off, then he has to go on the DL, with how short handed the Mets have been playing.
So, the question becomes, do they give a look to one of the AA guys that have been mashing
