Note: The Willie Randolph Spin Room
By Matthew Cerrone - May 21, 2008 3:30 pm

SNY’s Kevin Burkhardt is currently doing a one-on-one interview with Willie Randolph, which will hopefully air during the five o’clock hour on SNY.

Randolph will also appear in his regular spot on WFAN’s Mike and the Maddog, which typically airs just after 5 pm.

let the spin cycle begin, willie…good luck

You know how this will end? People who already don’t like him will not change their minds. Some people who DO like him will become sick and tired of this stuff. If they were smart they would put a stop to this once and for all and do the rest of the talking on the field. They are not helping themselves.

    • AlreadyMissShea says:

Some people who DO like him will become sick and tired of this stuff… meaning they are going to start to turn against Willie for no other reason than they are tired of seeing and hearing all of this. They will cost Willie some of his supporters without winning over anyone new.

      • jamie says:

I totally agree…this is doing absolutely nothing to bridge the confidence gap. best move would be to shut up and play, retreat back into cliche mode, and either fire him or don’t. like talking your way out of a parking ticket by explaining you were robbing a bank. or something.

    • Paid Like Mike Gallego says:

He probably won’t do this but my advice to Willie would be to apologize for creating an unnecessary distraction. It’s obvious that he’s frustrated with how the team is playing and in turn how the fans and media are reacting to the team’s mediocre play. Tell the fans that he let his frustration get the better of him and that it won’t happen again and that his focus is on doing whatever is necessary to get this team to play much better. Finally, he should tell the fans that he understands and feels their frustration but that he and the Mets will need their support in order to achieve the ultimate goal that we (ownership, GM, manager, players and fans alike) share: winning the World Series.

All this talk about whether he should be fired or not is counterproductive. If the Mets continue to be mediocre, he’ll be fired. If they get hot, he won’t. For Willie and the players, the focus has to be on winning games and playing well consistently instead of on what Willie’s job security is or who is avoiding the media.

  2. xmulderx says:

The Spin Doctors were a one-hit wonder and i am afraid it is looking more and more like Willie was aswell.

    • MacD81 says:

Umm, I have argue with you on this. The Spin Doctors were clearly a “two-hit” wonder. “Two Princes,” and “Little Miss Can’t be Wrong.” Maybe even “Pocket Full of Kryptonite,” which would launch them into “three-hit” wonderdom.

      :0P

  3. WozzyBear says:

Maybe he’ll announce his resignation….That would make my afternoon.

Either way, let’s get a win tonight …please…

    • AlreadyMissShea says:

You know they are just going to try and write the whole thing off as a misunderstanding and things being taken out of context. Does anyone really care anymore after the two games yesterday? This whole thing has been talked out to death already. JUST PLAY GOOD BASEBALL.

  4. ness589 says:

I hope Mike and Dog bury him.

    • WozzyBear says:

Mike and the Dog will NOT bury him…In Fatscesca’s eyes, willie is a Yankee, thus he is incapable of burying Willie. He’ll clearly take Willie’s side like the Yankee apologist that he is.

      • nrmax88 says:

I dont understand why everybody calls Mike a yankee homer and a Met hater. He obviously loves them(the yankees), but I listen everyday and he is almost always fair when it comes to the Mets. He is logical and doesnt bash the Mets for no reason. He was worse years ago, but Dog usually annoys me more then Mike when it comes to the Mets.

  5. Horseman says:

Wishful thinking with the resignation. I do think that Willie’s days are number. These comments he made did not help, and now, he has to take what he said back. Whatever. I want to hear more Wagner.

  6. AlreadyMissShea says:

And if anyone was hoping Willie was going to get fired anytime soon, this news should tell you that it’s not going to happen. They are going to try to lick their wounds and put this behind them. Otherwise they would not do this interview today.

So what I have been saying for weeks now will probably still hold true. This team is going to have to figure out a way to win WITH Willie.

    • dykstraw says:

yeah i’m afraid of this too

      • AlreadyMissShea says:

Well if they do anything to turn this on the fans and make it look like it’s their fault, I will be giving away the rest of my tickets for this season. Everyone be nice to me! You might get an early Christmas present.

  7. xmulderx says:

Fatso and Fruitloops have never buried a manager in a interview since they got in a screaming match on the air with Bobby V.

    • Gasface77 says:

I wish Bobby V. would bury Willie. Bring back Bobby V. to manage and bring back Piazza as a coach or broadcast guy.

      Done!

  8. dave27 says:

I can’t believe how these comments are being overreacted to.

And I can’t believe how this team is incapable of playing well enough to keep the focus on the field for more than 3 days at a time.

    • ness589 says:

It’s hard to keep focus when your manager, after a 2 game sweep at Yankee Stadium, has this outburst where he blames the owner’s network for his portrayal and brings race into the mix (Sorry Willie, but you did).

      • egnirc says:

interview was conducted Saturday or Sunday.
Before the sweep. Media blew it up after the sweep.

  9. boomingranny says:

I would like to talk about Baseball please

    • xmulderx says:

It is hard to talk about baseball when your manager is talking about anything but. There in lies the big problem for the ownership and front office. Once again this is about anything but the play on the field. Something has to give and that something is going to probably be Willie going bye bye.

      • AlreadyMissShea says:

“Something has to give and that something is going to probably be Willie going bye bye.”

Not happening. Why would they be doing this emergency interview with Willie if he was in any danger?

        • xmulderx says:

This interview i am sure you will here is by Willies design to try and hammer home how he did not mean what he actually said.

  10. metsfanmurph says:

I am going to take a shot everytime Willie says “It’s early”, “I trust my guys”, and the word rhythm.

  11. AlreadyMissShea says:

Well the good news here is that once SNY bails him out of this one later today, he can never run his mouth about the network being unfair to him again. One less excuse.

  12. xmulderx says:

The manager can’t keep his focus where it should be either. He says he want’s wagner to keep it in house. Then he turns around 2 days later and says this garbage. Who is he kiddin ? If he wants to say it was off the record i am not buying it. The fact is he does not dispute any comments O’Connor made. Willie likes to say he is a smart man and knows this town. Well the idea that he did not know this would go to print is just ignorance. He not only knew it would go to print he wanted it to go to print.

  13. zen says:

    fan 1: fire willie!
fan 2: it’s not his fault!
    fan 3: willie sucks!
fan 4: the players have to be held resposible too
    fan 5: willie thinks i’m a racist!
fan 1: fire willie! he has no fire!
fan 4: omar is part of the problem
fan 5: omar only likes players from the dominican! willie brings up race…fire him!
    fan 2: it’s may!
    gary cohen: fire willie!
fan 3: willie is the worst manager ever!

  14. grote says:

Teamwork comment, I was at the first game yesterday and thought it odd that at the start of one inning Delgago jogged right passed the ball near the front of the mound instead of tossing it to Maine who was behind him. Small thing but gave me the impression that Carlos is just thinking about himself.

  15. xmulderx says:

I found it interesting the only people that came out to see if Church was okay was Billy Wagner, Joe Smith, Willie Randolph and Chipper Jones.

    • patrick says:

I love blatant mistruths, the people visible at one point or another in Met uniforms, Wagner, Easley, Randolph, Alomar.

I don’t know where you get Joe Smith at all, and what exactly you are trying to insinuate, it was the last play of the game and any number of guys or coaches or the manager could have told the rest of the bench to stay off the field, having you entire dugout standing over him is not going to do him any good.

      • egnirc says:

The still picture I have shows: Nieto, Randolph, Alomar, Chipper, Damion, Wagner, and either Scott Show, Smith or Wise (2 of these 3, they had the team jackets on, I’d imagine it was the 2 that was in the game) and the 2 trainers.

  16. gipper82475 says:

Wow, an SNY interview. Better hope Bill Webb isn’t directing. Maybe they’ll bring in outside cameramen to make Willie more comfy. Plus, can you really tust that Burhardt guy? He’s seems kinda shifty.

    • therealsince86 says:

ha ha ha ha ha ha, oh man, ha ha ha.
      467.

    • patrick says:

I don’t know gipper82475, how could we possibly trust the guy who puts his name and face on the line everyday?

    • nrmax88 says:

They should let Giuseppe Franco do the interview, he doesnt put his name on the line for a product that doesnt work. That should rebuild the confidence in Willie.

  17. xmulderx says:

Willie better edit the piece himself.. you don’t want that canvas painted in the wrong light..

  18. metsfanmurph says:

Hopefully Burkhart leaves his white hood in the car today.

  19. SlappyMcHomerton says:

OH NO PLEASE I HOPE THIS DOESN’T MEAN WILLIE’S JOB IS IN TROUBLE!!! OMG OMG OMG WHAT WOULD WE ALL DO WITHOUT HIM??????????????

  20. Well, talk about spin … why did Matt decide to run the Willie confidence poll today after the Ian O’Connor fallout and doubleheader loss and not at its usual time – every Monday?

Is this going to be some selective thing where they only run the poll after losses or when there’s a controversy?

Doesn’t sound very fair or valid to me.

    • MacD81 says:

I think he said he was going to do them on Monday and Wednesday from now on. Or was it Monday and Friday? Or was that the confidence poll? I’m all confused now. Umm yeah, bat Church second or something?

    • dykstraw says:

wrongo bucko. he stated last week that from then on, willie confidence poll is scheduled for wednesday.

plus insinuating that matt is scheming to make willie look bad is INSANE.

      • No. He said he was going to be doing it every Monday.

I think it’s clear Matt’s preference is for Willie to be fired. Running the poll at arbitrary times is manipulating the outcomes.

        • dykstraw says:

you are definitively wrong on both accounts

        • Uh, no I’m not. Prove it.

The last two polls were run on a Monday.

        • dykstraw says:

proven below, but don’t let that stop you from arguing for argument’s sake!

        • dystraw, you proved my point.

There are 2 polls — The Willie Confidence Poll and the General Confidence poll.

As I said, the Willie poll is normally run on Mondays. And he didn’t run it this Monday. He ran it today>

The comment you found backs up what I said.

You owe me an apology. :!:

        • dykstraw says:

          i’m sorry : )

i still don’t buy that he has an agenda here. especially since no one called him on his posting the general poll on monday. it’s an innocent mistake.

        • OK, bucko. Apology accepted.

How can it be an innocent mistake, though?

I think he just held off because he wanted to see what the fallout would be from the Ian O’Connor story. But you see, if he does that, then he’s selectively choosing the times when to conduct the poll and influencing opinion.

I’m sure the confidence would have been high on Monday after the sweep of the Yankees. But we’ll never know.

        • And why isn’t there an Omar confidence poll :?:

        • dykstraw says:

because he runs polls every monday and wednesday and in this case he just flip-flopped the two? if the mets swept yesterday, that would have really destroyed his willie-hating plan, right?

besides, he posted the confidence poll at 9am, and from what i can tell, the o’connor piece and the corresponding metsblog post went up two hours later, and matt’s post didn’t even mention willie’s comments about the fans which i find far more inflammatory than what he said about SNY.

you’re attributing a ton of devious intent to what i’m sure was an innocent mistake.

        • Uh, no. You don’t flip-flop polls by accident. Matt runs a pretty tight ship here and he doesn’t do things by accident. His site is anything but sloppy and it’s one of the reasons I like it. And, at any rate, the moment he ran the general confidence poll, he could see what it was.

The decision to run the Willie poll later in the week seems intentional, for whatever reason.

Even if the Mets swept yesterday, that would not have mitigated the intense fallout from the O’Connor interview.

besides, he posted the confidence poll at 9am, and from what i can tell, the o’connor piece and the corresponding metsblog post went up two hours later, …

dykstraw, the issue is not the general confidence poll, but the Willie confidence poll which he didn’t run till today. Way after everyone got to read the Ian O’Connor article and the critical fallout. So I’m not sure what your point is right above.

Again, I don’t think running the Willie poll later in the week was a mistake by any means.

      • And the last two polls were run on Monday, just as he stated they would be.

        So you’re wrong, big mouth!

    • Horseman says:

I think he did it for his SNY bit. I wonder how long my comment will last. I am getting deleted all the time.

  21. SlappyMcHomerton says:

I SUPPOSE ONCE HE IS GONE IT COULD EFFECT THE TRAFFIC COMING TO METSBLOG THOUGH SO I THINK WE SHOULD GIVE WILLIE AN EXTENSION. 25 YEARS 200 BILLION DOLLA$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

    • gipper82475 says:

Nah, the Omarwatch begins then. As does the “to rebuild or not to rebuild” debate. As does the “who to get to replacethe interim manager after the season” discussion.

  22. metsfanmurph says:

This may be a bit off topic but I think Pelfrey should plunk Escobar tonight for knocking Church out. It will give the team some life at the least and Escobar will find a way to get himself tagged out anyways.

  23. Matt – what exactly are you wishing Willie good luck for? In addition to being a lousy manager (which you can debate all you want), he just made a total clown of himself (which you can’t.) How about you keep your wishes for good luck to the Mets – not to Willie Randolph, come on now buddy.

    • oh yeah.. SLAPPY MCSINGLETON!!!!!!!! WHE!!!!!!!!!!! WHEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BUNT SINGLES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GIDP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FOUR MORE YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SLAAAAAAAAAAAAAPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. xmulderx says:

one day people are complaining about Matt being to pro willie with his polls… one day people are complaing he is being to anti-willie with his polls. He can’t win for losing..Hey just leave the guy alone allready!

  25. cver says:

Yeah Willie – good luck playing shuffleboard with Art Howe. I like Willie as a person and I know that was mean, but I don’t want him on the Mets anymore. And if he’s on another team, I don’t wish him good luck, just as I don’t wish Tom Glavine good luck. I DO wish Gotay good luck though, when he’s not playing us and hope he does well in losing efforts, because he cried when he was taken off the team. Willie is more a Yankee than a Met anyway. His talk about Yankee Stadium recently didn’t sit well with me, although I can understand that he has many memories there. If he was more successful here, than I could give him a pass. BUT, I will note that the Mets did improve a ton when he took the helm and he has to get some of the credit for that, too. But the 08 Randolph slogan is – HIS TIME HAS COME!

  26. cver says:

I will add that I feel like some parents do – although I have never been one. You know how parents often tell their kids that they can play, go to the movies, etc. after they do their homework. Well, I don’t think that ANY MET should be doing ANY INTERVIEWS until they do their homework – i.e. win games and become the powerhouses they should be. While Wagner might have woken up the team and accountability is a nice thing, these guys need to get good sleep, somehow stay loose, and eat and breathe the game. All of this PR stuff is counterproductive. Gee, nothing to get your confidence up like answering questions about yesterday’s loss or last year’s collapse. It’s draining and time-consuming. Time that could be used more constructively to win games. Someone explain to me how Delgado or Beltran answering a question will win the next game for them? Maybe the idea is that if they don’t talk to reporters, the media writes nasty stuff and then the home fans boo more. I dunno – sounds lame. Play the game the right way – run out balls, for example. If this team excecuted the basics and concentrated on “on-the-field” stuff, they’d probably be better off – including Willie!
