Poll: Should SNY Hire Mike Piazza
By Brandon Eddy - May 21, 2008 3:06 pm

In a post to Baseball Prospectus, Jay Jaffe looks at the Cooperstown Case for Mike Piazza, who officially announced his retirement from MLB yesterday.

After the news broke that Piazza officially retired yesterday, everyone rightfully praised him for his tremendous career and what he did for the Mets franchise.

What some people may not remember is the fine job he also did as a baseball analyst – most notably for ESPN, which got me thinking: why doesn’t SNY immediately hire him.

With his insider knowledge of the current players and issues, I think he would be a great addition to the booth or studio.

LOL, finally … something most of us can agree with.

Hah! I said “no” . . . then rethought it, but it was too late. (Basically, I don’t want Darryl fired, but there’s always room at the desk.)

I’d love to have Piazza in the booth when Keith or Ron is off coloring a moustache or filming a commercial.

exactly where I want him…there are plenty of games where one of those guys isn’t in the booth, guest spot mike for a few of em and see how it goes.

Maybe they give Mikey his own sports-entertainment show on SNY. Maybe like a talk show. It doesn’t have to be necessarily related to Mets’ game telecasts.

yes my ideal situation - mike replaces ron and keith - keith to be the manager, ron to be the pitching coach - fire peterson and willie - 08 champions - no denying the electricity and intenisty this would bring to shea.

I could only imagine, Keith would unite the team with tootsie pops

I wouldn’t add him to the booth - that is working way too well as it is - but as a studio guy, sure! Really, the Mets should offer him any job in the franchise that he wants.

I’d LOVE if they hired Piazza. I hope they do, actually, keep him within the organization. They could add him to the booth, have a 3-man booth each night, with someone getting off…or in some other capacity. I hope they do this, ASAP.

Wilpon did say a few weeks ago, that whenever Piazza retires, the organization will have a place for him.

Who would be the odd man out? Mazz or Straw? It’s a given Harold Reynolds will be a fixture…but with Mike who leaves? Or would an ensemble cast work?

I don’t think Reynolds wil lbe a fixture…I’m pretty sure that he will work to parlay the SNY gig into national job, instead of staying with the regional network.

Harold reynolds already looks frustrated working with Mazz, who talks over him.

I voted yes. A lot of no votes might come from people who think the booth and studio are getting too crowded already. Some people would definitely have to be moved around to make room for him. At least if he was going to be an everyday guy.

honestly, I voted no because I think he adds very little to the broadcast team, is a boring commentator and things are working fine as they are.

Maybe bring him in Ralph Kiner style to tell an occassional amusing anecdote but honestly if I had to listen to him for a whole game i would turn the sound off.

Piazza would actually be a terrible hitting coach - because he was such a natural. He never looked at video. Never analyzed anything. He just went up there and raked. You can’t teach that.

I’m sure he understands the other side of it - and if he wanted to be a hitting coach, I’m sure he’d be a great one. But if you just look at his approach to hitting, it wouldn’t translate into a good hitting coach.

Speaking of Piazza, I have not heard of anything concerning dedications at Citifield, How about statues of Tom Terrific pitching to Mike Piazza catching?

Personally, I think the statue thing is getting overdone. It’s time for Maoist banners.

If SNY had Harold Reynolds and Mike Piazza doing post game, they would have to expand the depth of the program to cover all of baseball, not just the Mets.

Because that is a product that can compete with Baseball Tonight.

oh…and it would also be a waste of 2 great analytical minds to dedicate 30-60 min of their time to just his one underperforming ballclub.
