Poll: Should SNY Hire Mike Piazza
By Brandon Eddy - May 21, 2008 3:06 pm

In a post to Baseball Prospectus, Jay Jaffe looks at the Cooperstown Case for Mike Piazza, who officially announced his retirement from MLB yesterday.

After the news broke that Piazza officially retired yesterday, everyone rightfully praised him for his tremendous career and what he did for the Mets franchise.

What some people may not remember is the fine job he also did as a baseball analyst – most notably for ESPN, which got me thinking: why doesn’t SNY immediately hire him.

With his insider knowledge of the current players and issues, I think he would be a great addition to the booth or studio.

  1. LOL, finally … something most of us can agree with.

    • toomanyuniforms says:

Hah! I said “no” . . . then rethought it, but it was too late. (Basically, I don’t want Darryl fired, but there’s always room at the desk.)

I’d love to have Piazza in the booth when Keith or Ron is off coloring a moustache or filming a commercial.

      • jamie says:

exactly where I want him…there are plenty of games where one of those guys isn’t in the booth, guest spot mike for a few of em and see how it goes.

      • Maybe they give Mikey his own sports-entertainment show on SNY. Maybe like a talk show. It doesn’t have to be necessarily related to Mets’ game telecasts.

      • anditsouttahere says:

yes my ideal situation - mike replaces ron and keith - keith to be the manager, ron to be the pitching coach - fire peterson and willie - 08 champions - no denying the electricity and intenisty this would bring to shea.

  2. gipper82475 says:

I wouldn’t add him to the booth - that is working way too well as it is - but as a studio guy, sure! Really, the Mets should offer him any job in the franchise that he wants.

    • ebfnyc says:

no youre him. the dude is such a great met he can tell us inside info pertaining to Mr. Met etc

  3. NYsMaineMan says:

I’d LOVE if they hired Piazza. I hope they do, actually, keep him within the organization. They could add him to the booth, have a 3-man booth each night, with someone getting off…or in some other capacity. I hope they do this, ASAP.

    • ravi3 says:

Wilpon did say a few weeks ago, that whenever Piazza retires, the organization will have a place for him.

    • phoola says:

oh gawd, that would be awful. I couldn’t stand listening to that guy for nine innings.

  4. giuseppe franco_procede says:

Who would be the odd man out? Mazz or Straw? It’s a given Harold Reynolds will be a fixture…but with Mike who leaves? Or would an ensemble cast work?

    • ravi3 says:

I don’t think Reynolds wil lbe a fixture…I’m pretty sure that he will work to parlay the SNY gig into national job, instead of staying with the regional network.

    • stickguy says:

who knows, maybe Mazz will get “promoted” to another job in the organization?

  5. AlreadyMissShea says:

I voted yes. A lot of no votes might come from people who think the booth and studio are getting too crowded already. Some people would definitely have to be moved around to make room for him. At least if he was going to be an everyday guy.

    • phoola says:

honestly, I voted no because I think he adds very little to the broadcast team, is a boring commentator and things are working fine as they are.

Maybe bring him in Ralph Kiner style to tell an occassional amusing anecdote but honestly if I had to listen to him for a whole game i would turn the sound off.

  6. upstatemetsfanatic says:

give him a shot at Willie’s job!

  7. hbean says:

    Pizza for hitting coach!

    • hbean says:

wow can you tell i skipped lunch?

      Piazza!

    • ags412 says:

Piazza would actually be a terrible hitting coach - because he was such a natural. He never looked at video. Never analyzed anything. He just went up there and raked. You can’t teach that.

I’m sure he understands the other side of it - and if he wanted to be a hitting coach, I’m sure he’d be a great one. But if you just look at his approach to hitting, it wouldn’t translate into a good hitting coach.

  8. MrMetsLuvChild says:

Speaking of Piazza, I have not heard of anything concerning dedications at Citifield, How about statues of Tom Terrific pitching to Mike Piazza catching?

  9. Cactus says:

Hold out for the manager’s job Mike. It will be open soon. Willie is starting to crack.

  10. Danny1986 says:

If SNY had Harold Reynolds and Mike Piazza doing post game, they would have to expand the depth of the program to cover all of baseball, not just the Mets.

Because that is a product that can compete with Baseball Tonight.

  11. zen says:

    retire #31

the top 5 stories on the espn mlb page are currently about the mets.

  12. archie says:

when his retirement was anounced I immediately posted in the comments for them to hire him.

  13. This doesn’t strike me as something Piazza would do

  14. YouNeedATissueToo says:

Mike did a great job for ESPN, in fact his insights were like an expansion on how he addressed the media in NY — when it came to comments on the game, not the other BS that sometimes surrounded him.

He and Reynolds would make a great duo — better than Kruk and Ravich.

  15. 7train says:

Hek yea, i want Piazza on the SNY team immediately. Mike we love you bro.

I was at his final game with the Mets.

I remember my brother brought his new gilfriend to the game and during the ten minute standing ovation,

I was glassy eyed and teary and had a slight lip quiver.

I was holdin it back, I didn’t want to scare his new girl, kinda funny when I think back.

Love Mike. he;s the man. Get this guy workin with the Mets immediately.

He’s a Paison and he represents Mets Pride. Two words rarely put together.

  16. ksuth says:

    *cough*hitting coach*cough*

  17. boozermetsfan says:

Mikey can replace Maz. Reynolds is showing how slow and uninsightful Maz really is.

  18. jules says:

i’d love to see this happen!
