Read: SI’s Heyman, Club Officials and Willie
By Matthew Cerrone - May 21, 2008 12:19 pm

During his interview with WFAN today, Brian Schneider told the show’s hosts that he and his teammates love Willie Randolph and are 100 percent behind him.

However, according to Jon Heyman in a report for SI.com, Jeff Wilpon recently called Randolph and Omar Minaya together ‘for a serious pep talk,’ and basically told them that the team must turn it around quickly.

Heyman also notes that, while club officials have loosely discussed potential replacements, such as bench coach Jerry Manuel, “Minaya recently told an executive from another team that Randolph isn’t going anywhere.”

Which is exactly what he should say, publicly.

True.

Also, Heyman is a dolt, I don’t put any stock in his “sources”.

And if accurate, I wonder it was obviously before willie’s little interview..

Everyone needs to get off Willie’s back. This is seriously going too far.

The fans are acting like this is a last place team. Think about it…they are 1 game over .500 and Beltran, Wright, Reyes, Santana, and Ollie haven’t even hit their stride yet. Pedro has pitched 3 innings. Let’s give this til the All Star break. The Yanks were putrid last year before the break.

Question just like I ask with Heilman.
Do you think that Willie can be successful here as a manager?

You’re right, negativefan … the Yanks are much worse especially considering they spend a whole lot more money on their payroll.

Well they are a 4th place team.

I mean I know 1/4 of the season has been played and things can change with 3/4 of the season left. At the same time based on the last 100 games or so have been played, you don’t see how that is going to change.

I for one do think it is about time we hit the panic button.

Much, much harder to do. You try the manager first then you start looking at moving some players.

considering the drama it’s pretty remarkable that not even one player has commented negatively on willie. not even off-the-record.

you’d think there would be one article out there this year with an anonymous players slamming willie knowing this is the opportunity get rid of him. it’s likely the players know it’s them regardless of if a change is justified or not.

Really? Ya think the players realize they have led to this mess? Can’t be Joe Beningo says otherwise.

No clubhouse is ever as smooth as silk. And you don’t need a “smooth as silk” clubhouse to win. The ‘86 Mets were like a gravel road. And the ‘04 Red Sox had their divisions.

The point is that when a manager has truly lost a team, one might expect anonymous quotes from multiple players to appear in the papers by now.

the drama in the clubhouse is all the more reason it’s interesting.

Then again, even-steven, .500 ball is just right for “zen.”

you mis-interpreted what i wrote. no big deal. i’m hardly okay with .500 ball. i just don’t view mlb like the nfl. most knowledgable fans don’t.

(1) I don’t think you’d necesarily have dissatisfaction leak out with a fractured clubhouse.

(2) Did you ever think that Willie might be a “players’ manager” managing players who need a good swift kick in the arse? That was what Graziano seemed to be suggesting in an interesting column Matt linked to a couple weeks back.

Comment by Free Aaron Heilman
2008-05-21 13:38:33

1) Usually you see it publicized - sometimes not even anonymously. It happened in Philly with Bowa. And it happened with the Marlins before Boles was fired.

2) Who needs a good swift kick in the arse on the Mets and isn’t getting it? Are you suggesting he should go ballistic instead of taking a player behind closed doors and talking to him? Should he instead berate players publicly in the papers the way Leyland has been doing? How is that working out?

He doesn’t have to “go ballistic,” but maybe he should bench some players. And, yeah, maybe he SHOULD go ballistic behind closed doors.

And doubt Jim Leyland as much as you’d like, but I’d trade managers with that team in a heartbeat.

Anyway, (1) you’re not going to know how the players feel if they follow a code of silence about internal matters (which is the one thing they seem able to do as a team) and (2) dumb plays should equal benching. If you have a Reyes who can’t be benched lest he go into a tizzy, maybe you try more carrots with him, and fewer sticks. Bottom line, these guys obviously aren’t self-motivated. I mean, come on. Are we watching the same team?

How useful a player do you think Delgado will be if he’s benched?

And. BTW. according to Wright, he has turned over tables and chairs before. So he has gone ballistic (behind closed doors).

Leyland on the Mets wouldn’t make a difference with this team. I honestly believe that.

(1) you’re not going to know how the players feel if they follow a code of silence about internal matters (which is the one thing they seem able to do as a team) and

That’s where the anonymous quotes come in.

Bottom line, these guys obviously aren’t self-motivated. I mean, come on. Are we watching the same team?

You can’t change the fact that . Delgado is laid back because that’s his personality. No amount of carrots or sticks are going to change that. It may only make it worse.

And self-motivation isn’t entirely the problem with Delgado. His fielding and hitting skills have eroded to the point where he’s way below league average at his position. Motivation can’t fix eroding skills.

These are not nursery school kids. Treating them as such will foster resentment and won’t help.

i never said not to. i made a simple observation. every discussion doesn’t have to be the same: willie is the worst manager in history vs willie is a g-d.
