News: Pedro to throw Bullpen on Sunday

by Matthew Cerrone on May 22nd, 2008 at 10:37 pm

According to SNY’s Post-Game Show, Pedro Martinez is scheduled to return to St. Lucie and pitch a bullpen session on Sunday.

…so, bullpen on sunday, after which i’m guessing he’ll need another tune up given the off days, so, i suspect he could be ready to return to the Mets during the first week of June…

postGame: Braves 4 Mets 2

by Matthew Cerrone on May 22nd, 2008 at 10:00 pm

The Mets (22–23) lost to the Braves (26–21) by the score of 4 to 2 in Atlanta tonight, completing a four-game sweep.

For a boxscore, play-by-play, etc., go to SNY’s Recap Page.

  • Yikes. I mean, yikes. Say it again, yikes.
  • So, the Mets are a below-500 team. I mean, maybe that’s a good thing at this point. Maybe this will act as a bit of cold water – or, I should say I hope it does.
  • A lot of things happened in this game, but what I found most frustrating, was David Wright. He makes a tremendous statement last night, talking about emotion, wanting to win, etc., and then plays a horrible game tonight. In fact, it looked like he was trying to do too much. He had a rough night at the plate, in the field and on the bases, getting doubled-up on first base in the ninth inning on a line drive by Carlos Beltran. I’m not picking on Wright. I mean, every one is entitled to a rough game. He’s my favorite player on the team. I’m just saying, it’s crazy how finally this team gets a player to say the right things, and then that very player struggles on the night. It’s like, they just can’t get it together, even when they’re trying their hardest.
  • I think it may be time to begin Willie Watch, as a four-game sweep and falling below .500 cannot be good.

The Mets travel to Colorado to take on the Rockies tomorrow, starting at 9 pm EDT, with Oliver Perez facing Greg Reynolds.

Read: Mets Are Done, Braves Harmony

by Mike Nichols on May 22nd, 2008 at 8:50 pm

At his blog for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Mark Bradley declares the Mets are a mess and goes as far to say the Mets are ‘done.’

While rehashing the Mets 2007 collapse and recapping the latest controversies of Billy Wagner and Willie Randolph, Bradley takes the time to praise the Braves harmony, writing…

“And here, not for the first or even the hundredth time, we see why the Braves remain the gold standard of communal harmony. They don’t throw 25 players together without consideration for compatibility. (Remember when Sports Illustrated hailed Mets GM Omar Minaya as a “Mixmaster”?) The manager never creates problems; he defuses them. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned in 30 years of hanging around clubhouses, it’s that mood absolutely matters.”

…gotta love these writers from these other cities, especially from cities where there fans don’t show up to see their own teams play…they always pounce when the smell blood in new york…

preGame: Mets at Braves (Game Four)

by Mike Nichols on May 22nd, 2008 at 6:00 pm

The Game:

The Mets (22-22) look to avoid a sweep of their four-game series versus the Braves (25-21) tonight at Turner Field in Atlanta, starting at 7:10pm EST.

The Lineup:

The Pitchers:

LHP Johan Santana (5-2, 3.30 ERA) takes the hill for the Mets. In his last start on May 17 versus the Yankees, Santana allowed four runs on seven hits (3 HR) ad two walks while striking out five over 7.2 IP. He is 0-2 with a 2.41 ERA in three career starts versus the Braves.

RHP Tim Hudson (6-3, 3.06 ERA) starts for the Braves. Hudson lasted five innings in his last start, a loss versus the A’s on May 17 allowing five runs on five hits and five walks while striking out three. He is 8-5 with a 3.96 ERA in 14 career starts versus the Mets.

The Notes:

Carlos Beltran and Carlos Delgado are batting a combined .324 (36-for-11) with 9 HR and 26 RBI in their careers versus Hudson.

Mark Teixeira is 4-for-20 (.200) with 1 HR and 2 RBI in his career versus Santana.

Brian McCann is hitting .419 with 11 2B, 3 HR and 19 RBI in 16 May games.

…with roughly 75% of season left the Mets are back to square one…it’s not too late for this team to right the ship and play at the caliber they are capable of…there’s too much talent for this team to be .500 and theres no one better then the guy on the mound tonight to put a stop to this nonsense and give this team the ability to go on a run…i know this team may not be any fun to watch right now, but it’s time we put the negativity behind us and cheer on our team…Let’s Go MetsLet’s Go MetsLet’s Go Mets

Note: SI’s Heyman thinks Willie has the Year

by Matthew Cerrone on May 22nd, 2008 at 5:49 pm

In the latest edition of Sports Illustrated, Jon Heyman writes quite extensively about Willie Randolph, the Mets and whether the two can continue to co-exist.

Today, Heyman was a guest on WFAN and said:

“I still think he’ll keep his job…Management is annoyed…They told him and Omar it’s time to turn it around and turn it around quick.  But, I still think he has this year to turn it around.”

…my sense, from a lot of people, from fans to people in media to people in baseball, is that, if the Mets lose tonight and end up being swept by the Braves, willie will be in serious, serious trouble…honestly, i have not talked to any one in the know since Monday, when most discussions centered on his comments, not his job security – so i have no idea where he stands…my hunch, though, is that he’ll get at least through Memorial Day

…the Wilpons are very fair people, and i find it hard to believe they would lay down the law – as heyman reports – and not give willie and omar ample time to turn it around…to can someone just a week after saying, ‘turn it around,’ would be a bit impulsive…

Note: Bye Sosa, Easley Away, Raul on the Way

by Matthew Cerrone on May 22nd, 2008 at 5:34 pm

Jorge Sosa has been officially released by the Mets.

happy trails, jorge

Damion Easley was given permission to leave the team so he can attend his son’s high school graduation.

so, basically, the Mets bench will be Ramon Castro and Fernando Tatis tonightman, i hope they just play nine innings

Also, Raul Casanova is on his way to Atlanta in the event Moises Alou ends up on the disabled list.

Earlier today, Alou had an MRI on his calf, the results of which have yet to be announced.

Lastly, it does not appear Ryan Church will be in tonight’s lineup.

Links: Mock Draft, Slotting, No Fun, Mediocrity

by Mike Nichols on May 22nd, 2008 at 4:45 pm

Over at Hot Foot, Andrew Smith will represent the Mets in an upcoming Mock Draft with other bloggers.

Speaking of the upcoming draft, Michael Salfino of SNY.tv takes a look at draft slotting and the Mets tough decision on whether or not to violate the league’s wishes on the subject.

…after trading away many of their top prospects over the last few seasons the
Mets need to desperately invigorate their minor league system with top talent…to do that the Mets must stop concerning themselves with the league’s slotting system and start doing what’s best for the franchise….

…by the way, the Mets have the 18th, 22nd and 33rd picks in the first round of the upcoming first-year player draft on June 5…

At Amazin’ Avenue, Eric Simon says the Mets are fortunate the rest of their division is as mediocre as they are, writing…

“I want to say that the Mets need to turn things around soon if they want any chance of salvaging this season, but I don’t even know if that’s accurate. The rest of the division is iffy enough that the Mets could slog along for another couple of months, winning approximately as often as they lose, and still remain a stone’s throw from first place.”

Matthew Artis of Always Amazin‘ thinks this be as ‘good as it gets’ for the Mets this season.
