News: Alou Headed To NY for MRI
By Mike Nichols - May 22, 2008 7:46 am

Following last night’s game, Willie Randolph told reporters that Moises Alou is headed back to New York for an MRI to confirm a possible mild-strain to his left calf.

Alou later told reporters that while he is not ‘optimistic,’ he doesn’t expect to go on the disabled list and hopes to miss only ‘a few days.’

ok, hes out until atlease August

  2. Wayneoo says:

He’s flying back to NY for a possible calf strain. That is unreal. Suck it up.

the perfect player that will be a solution to most of the mets problems is Xavier Nady. The mets should give up anybody in the minors but FMART to get him.
Nady can play LF for the times Alou is out. He can play RF for church once in a while. And play 1b for delgado. This will put alot of pressure on delgado to perform or else he would be put on the bench for nady.
Then, come next year, we let alou go and have an outfield of nady, beltran and church. (a nice mix of lefty, switch, and a righty)

im telling you, this guy is the perfect fit for the team.

    • gomets019 says:

every1 knows Nady is a great fit. If we do get him, it better be for major leaguers tho. We can’t afford to lose guys like Carp, Evans, and Niese in the Minors. There are plenty of guys on the ML roster I’d drive to the airport myself.

    • dave27 says:

Unfortunately, the Pirates are not our minor league affiliate. Without incliding FMart, what are you giving up that’s going to be more enticing than what other teams have to offer if Nady goes on the block? It’s not like we got a first right of refusal clause when we traded Nady to begin with.

  4. ho-go says:

What a team of gimps, underachievers, has-beens, and never-will-bes.

  5. Two-By-Four says:

Alou admitted the obvious that he has an “old” body. They have to forget about what they are paying Alou for the year and go find themselves another everyday starting outfielder. When Alou returns reasonably healthy he has to be used as Rusty Staub was a few years back. BTW I have no idea who is available to fill the spot. But that’s why Omar earns the big bucks and I am a mere consulting engineer. They don’t have a choice in this scenario. They may have to make a temporary move until a better option presents itself.

    • RespectDaBestRM says:

our best hope is nady but either he wont be availible or itll cost us alot to get him.

the only thing i can think of is sheffield from detroit. hes having a bad year and i dnt think that detroit will mind trading him. however, hes probably going to dog it here also so it might not be such a good idea.

    • ericinsane says:

You are right, they went out and got Church, and you see how he turned out, they nee to find a Church for LF. Maybe Fernando will be ready next year. This back and forth out of the lineup is ridiclous, it’s like a tease.

  6. aznJoe says:

oh crap, can Alou stay healthy for atleast two months. strain calf equals DL for about a month especially for Alou. Wondering if Pagan is ready to come off the DL yet. If not, it is time to bring up either Dan Murphy or Nick Evans to the majors and play left field.

  7. stickguy says:

ALou should just say the heck with it, and retire. Even he must be embarrassed about the money he is stealing at this point.

Real glad he got talked out of retirement in the off season.

at least if he retires, the fantasy about holding a spot for him will be removed.

I agree that it is time to get one of hte AA boys up here for a trial. Might be good that F Mart has the injury now, otherwise they might be rushing him. Evans seems to be more ready for a try.

Pagan every day isn’t going to be the answer either.

  8. OH is it that time already? My watch must be slow.

  9. Slob says:

    So much for ‘08.

  10. Mookie 1986 says:

Calf strain?!? Don’t these guys stretch and run and workout on a regular basis? I know the guy is older, but a friggin calf strain?!?

Wow. It’s really amazing just how old this team has become in such a short amount of time. Both Phillips and Omar took very similar routes in terms of picking up older players on the down side of their careers, thus sticking the team with a bunch of overpaid has-beens who when on the field, can barely manage to offer one-third of what they would have in their prime years.

At least Phillips was able to hire a capable manager who had the ability to squeeze every last bit of talent out of that bunch of overachievers, who in turn led them to a WS.

This club is (and has been for waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too long now) and absolute disaster. Much worse than the late 1970’s because at least in the ’70s, ya went into every season knowing exactly what to expect. Whereas here, the fans expect a competitive team that should make a run at the playoffs (and even the WS), yet they continue to rip our hearts out.

    Good times…

  11. D in Ben Lomond says:

I like the idea of bringing up young blood now.

What we need to get is a big lefty bat to come off the bench.

we already got it: carlos delgado.

platoon marlon, easley, delgado at first for now. OR maybe the young guys since now DE and MA will be playing LF too.

Dodgers made the playoffs in 06 with marlon in the lineup everyday.

Too bad willie burned pagan in a PH AB last week, or he could come back a little earlier.

  12. aznJoe says:

wow, Pujols took out both chris young and josh bard in a single game. ouch… broken nose for young and injured leg for bard.

  13. D in Ben Lomond says:

joba is getting stretched out…. can we stretch out heilman now? He’s totally ineffective in his current role and I don’t see why he couldn’t put up comparable numbers to Pelfrey or Vargas…

    • They should do that. But they won’t because if Heilman succeeds in that role, it will make the braintrust look like a bunch of morons for having waited this long and instead trotting out a parade of losers like Park, Lima, Lawrence, Ishii and Vargas.

The Yankees asked Joba this week if he wanted to be in the rotation. He said yes so they are in the process of converting him now. The Mets never consulted with Heilman on matters like this. Instead they simply force the proverbial square peg into the round hole. Oh wait, they did ask him once. And he did well. But then they forced him back into the bullpen and never gave him another chance.

The Mets have never been great at scouting and then with the talent they do get, they rarely know how to maximize it.

    • dave27 says:

You really want to see Heilman pitching major league games for MORE than 1 inning? 1 inning is enough, thanks.

I will never, for the life of me, understand people’s obsession with making Aaron Heilman a starter. He has absolutley no command of his pitches. He goes 3-2 on every hitter with no ability whatsoever to deliver an out pitch. He gives up a home run per inning. He barely has 2 pitches in his arsenal. Do you people watch baseball? What about this guy says “successful starter?”

Face it, Heilman is a typical Mets bust. They draft big-bodied pitchers with no guts and no heart and if they stray from that path, they panic and trade the guy because they think he’ll get hurt or his personailty is too strong (you know who I’m talking about). Pelfrey is just Heilman II.

The Mets have to be the worst drafting team in baseball. Aside from Wright, they haven’t drafted and kept anyone worthwhile since…oh I don’t know, Gregg Jefferies? And even he was an anti-social loser. They put all their resources into latin American scouting and none into the draft - I swear they go into the draft with the Baseball America guide and just draft the next highest guy on the list.

Aaron Heilman SUCKS. He sucks as a reliever. He sucks as a starter. we’re still trying to coax something out of the guy who gave up the single biggest home run in franchise history as if it were not a harbinger of the next 2 years to come.

The only stretching Heilman should be doing are some leg lifts during his flight to New Orleans.

couldnt have said it any better!

  14. metsluc says:

    nady .. simple as that.

  15. playmaker3128 says:

IMO heilman doesn’t need to be stretched out, he needs to be traded. Some teams looked at him as a starter, and probably still do. I’d trade him for another reliever. Right now the bullpen still worries me a bit as well.

Scho, Smith, Feliciano and Wagner have been pretty good.

Sanchez has as well, however he still worries me. Early in the season he was throwing low 90’s, lately he hasn’t been able to touch that. I think he’ll eventually get his velocity back, but its gonna take a while.

Wise is average to me. Heilman has been bad. I think we could use another righty in the pen.

I agree with some of you in bringing up some of the young talent on this team. Guys that are hungry. Even though he hasn’t been spectacular so far this year, i wouldn’t mind giving kunz a look as well out of the pen.

  16. drew39k says:

Nady is NOT the answer. We need someone that can get on base at a good clip. Nady is not going to hit better then .270. No thanks.

The guys I would love to see the Mets try and get. Kevin Youkulis. We could never get him, but Id love to see them atleast make a play for him.

He would be a cheaper alternative at first, and he can play both corner IF slots.

  17. jess715 says:

All I have to say is VAL PASCUCCI.

No, I’m not joking. The Mets just signed the OF to AAA at the beginning of May. Check out his stats from last year in AAA with the Marlins organization:

    Avg: .284, HR: 34, RBI: 98

He’s a right-handed bat with pop. He would help balance the lineup when Alou is out.

With a name like ‘Pascucci’, how could you go wrong?

I can hear Joe Benigno now…”what’s up Valeeee, who’s betta than you, baby!”

  18. johnfromflushing says:

what a joke …… no way alou and his singles , should have been brought back … as a bat off the bench?..sure….. but to depend on him was insane…….ABSOLUTELY INSANE… and yes i said it when they signed him……. i felt his popping in and out of the lineup never getting a rythm going, and hitting singles hurt more than it helped…….

it also gives a underachieving bunch another fantasy savior to point to… “look !elduque coming to save us” ” look !pedro will come back and lead us “… no big hitters ? no problem !alou’s coming back to rake……….”

  19. johnfromflushing says:

and for all the heat willie gets(rightfully so ) .. omar should be held to the fire with him……..

    pedro goes down day 1

    elduque never pitches

    delgado ,didnt grow younger..as expected….

signing the overwieght blimp of a seconed baseman….. dont the mets realize castillo’s knees might not hurt as much if he wasnt so fat……?

alou starts the season on dl … plays a couple of weeks (adding almost nothing but a bunch of singles from a power spot.. and goes down again…..

i mean how predictable is that………….. great job omar….. and dont gibve me the santana deal ……… yanks and sox had the deal first…. and met money got him , not omars friendship…

oh and the bullpen he retooled …(joke ) still sucks..

  20. Matt1969 says:

HOw did he get hurt? One minute he is out in left field and the next he is strolling off the field toward the dugout?? What the heck happened??

  21. Horseman says:

This is really turning into a joke. I agree with the post above about bringing up the AA boys. At least we know that they will play their butts off to stay with the club.

  22. therealsince86 says:

Ok while looking for a trade bring up Pascucci and Murphy. That’s a LH and RH bat that can play 1B and OF. Chavez needs to go anyway. I am not too concerned over Delgado as to me he is a 7-8 hitter but if I could find some dope to take him and cash for a prospect I would jump on it.

  23. nickc75 says:

How about we trade Heilman to the Pirates for Nady. We can put Nady in left and the Pirates can stretch out Heilman and put him in their rotation.
