Note: Bye Sosa, Easley Away, Raul on the Way
By Matthew Cerrone - May 22, 2008 5:34 pm

Jorge Sosa has been officially released by the Mets.

happy trails, jorge

Damion Easley was given permission to leave the team so he can attend his son’s high school graduation.

so, basically, the Mets bench will be Ramon Castro and Fernando Tatis tonightman, i hope they just play nine innings

Also, Raul Casanova is on his way to Atlanta in the event Moises Alou ends up on the disabled list.

Earlier today, Alou had an MRI on his calf, the results of which have yet to be announced.

Lastly, it does not appear Ryan Church will be in tonight’s lineup.

    what is wrong with church??

    • shadesofshea says:

Church suffered a concussion in yesterday’s game.

      • ghobot says:

i know but he said he didnt even have one and would in today? and they said he was good to pinch hit last night? so whats the deal?

Very tough spot with the Easley thing. I am sure people are going to knock Willie for this one too but family is more important than baseball. I am sure anyone would miss work to attend their childs graduation. I don’t have any kids that I know about but I would miss work to attend my son’s graduation.

Agreed. But it is moderately funny that it looks like everybody is just running away from the team right now. Get off the sinking ship I suppose.

      • AlreadyMissShea says:

I think it’s funny that a Mets player is going to his son’s high school graduation in the first place. Man this team needs to get younger.

    • “I don’t have any kids that I know about”

      priceless

    • shinjosplints17 says:

Most players arn’t playing when their kids graduate high school, good for him. I think we should be more worried that we did not have any position player besides a third catcher worthy of making the trip.

hey can easley’s kid play first base?

  4. patrick says:

I am more lost on the return of Casanova unless they are going to deal big melon Castro somewhere.

    • Dr. Lekvar says:

Eddie Coleman was just on the fan. He said that when he asked the Mets why a catcher was being brought up to replace Alou he was told that Casanova was all they had at AAA that was major-league ready.

How can this be? Omar needs to take the hit for this.

      • MudvilleNine says:

Didnt they send down Caleb Stewart because of the glut of outfielders at NO? None of them are ready to play in the majors but they’re good enough to keep the AA outfielders form playing up there?

the bench was never that great to begin with so less of a bad thing is not so bad!

  6. metsfanmurph says:

This is what I am hoping the lineup looks like:

    Reyes
the fat singles hitter with diminishing range
    Wright
    Beltran
    Santana
    Delgado
    Anderson
    Schneider
    Endy

I am only half kidding about batting Johan 5th

  7. Now hitting in place of pitcher Johan Santana, batting 9th, pitch hitter #12: Willie. Randolph.

Casanova’s the only bat we have available? Bah. Why not give Pascucci a shot?

Also, bat Delgado 2nd. If the team can’t score any runs, try something new.

He’ll get some real good pitches to hit, in front of Wright. If nothing else, it’ll demonstrate just how much he has (or doesn’t have) left.

The Mets need a starter for the game on Saturday (due to the doubleheader on Tues). My guess would be that Cassanova is up for Thurs/Friday to have a bat off the bench. Then he will be sent down for the pitcher on Sat ( Figgy ??? ) and immediately after the game they will send the pitcher down and bring up an outfielder like Brady Clark.

Seems convoluted, but makes sense. Once a player is sent to the minors, he can’t come back up for 10 days, so bringing up Clark now would mean another roster move just to get a starter for Sat.

    • kickingmule says:

Just saw where Clark is out for the year with a knee, and that Pagan is on the minor league DL. So maybe Casanova is up for the duration.

Jorge hope you find a job at Denny’s home of the grandslam.good riddance.

  11. ness589 says:

I thought Sosa was being misused but so be it. Thanks for the stretch of time when you were good, last year.

  12. Elastic says:

Is Casanova the best bat we have in the minors? We have lost Alou and Church (day to day) and we bring up a third catcher?
    Why?
