Prior to last night’s game, Ryan Church told reporters that he never had a concussion, he is fine and expects to be back in the lineup during today’s finale against the Braves.
Willie Randolph, however, prefers to be more cautious, telling reporters:
“We’re going to be ultra cautious with him. When you’re dealing with the head injuries you don’t want to mess with that. We want to make sure he can do physical things, get up and down and give us an honest feeling of where he is. If he feels any type of lightheadedness or wooziness, then we won’t take a chance with him. He’s too important to us.”
For more on Church’s concussion from the spring, and his injury from Tuesday night, check out the Star-Ledger.

That’s the most (only?) sensible thing Willie has said all week.
You have to appreciate Church’s intensity and his willingness to give it all he has! But Willie is right to be cautious.
Get me 8 more Ryan Churches and we would have a team worth watching.
ehh, we would be too lefthanded and a little rough in the infield.
Yeah Willie, of course he is important to this team. He is the only one that cares!!!
Now if only the other players would grow a set. Alou gets a cramp and hopes to miss “only a few days”. Castillo thinks it would be a good idea to take every fourth game off. Church damn near gets his head ripped off and is already fighting to get back in the lineup after one day. Is there nothing this man can’t do?
Well said, V. Insanity.
I continue to stick with my guns when it comes time to express my opinion towards the disgusting play of the Metropolitans.
I will remain persistent and convey my thoughts of how the players portray the precise mirror image of their manager.
Lead-by-Example leadership has never backfired like current days as a New York Met.
Furthermore, injuries bring important feedback to the surface, while any injury-related happening to a NY Met should be explained in detail for the fans to read.
The Metropolitans are in an obvious downward spiral, with the latest injuries adding insult to their injury.
I do concur, that we want Church to feel well enough to play, so we can only hope to see him sooner than later. Needless to say, since he’s just about the only player to have his bat speak much louder than any word, we can expect a speedy recovery.
The fans would absolutely love to hear and see this .500 Team grow a set, for sure. We all know how a baseball season is long enough to witness almost anything. Thus, we absolutely have a chance to see the Mets turn this continuous slump around. Nonetheless, they need to start moving towards the right direction NOW.
Finally, due to injuries playing an unfortunate role in all sports, with key injuries always seeming to come at the worst time — the players MUST deal with it, and play through certain injuries. Players for all sports must toughen-up and play with sure emotion and adrenaline to make the pain go away. The post-game TLC inside the trainers room will always be there, so they need to fight through bumps and bruises in effort to WIN.
The best example to share, which brings-up a great idea how Willie can continue doing what he does best — remain silent w/ no emotion; Willie can motivate without saying a word, and listen to my best example; that is, hang-up pictures of true warriors throughout the locker room. The true warriors are hockey players. Boy, talk about fighting through injuries for the love of competition, winning, and their teammates. Hockey players can be shedding blood that requires 30-stitches one-minute, and be back in the game after some repair work. Willie should shed some positive light and start being more creative with his leadership and motivation.
THANK YOU! It’s like your reading my mind. I’m sick of hearing about Castillo and Alou and their aches and pains. I thought that the whole concept of playing baseball was to, well you know, ummmm play every once and a while. GO RYAN CHURCH!
Last night Howie and Tom were talking about how after Willie had finished talking to the press before the game Church ran through the clubhouse to get to Willie’s office. They both said they knew he was going to ask to play last night. Both agreed, however, that Willie was right to sit him out and I think he’d be right again to sit him out tonight at least.
Sheesh. Talk about a flashback. Howie & Wayne, not Howie & Tom.
I miss Tom. :-(
Yeah, I do too. Particularly on a night like last night when he and Howie could make you laugh and forget the game. I remember one game from Colorado when Howie & Tom were discussing the cloud patterns as the Mets were playing out a 17-2 (or whatever) loss .
I don’t want to be totally negative on Wayne Hagin, but there’s just something about his game-calling that doesn’t do it for me. He strikes me as a guy who bought into every sentence in the book: “Announcing Major League Baseball Games for Dummies”. He seems to lack genuineness, if that’s a word.
I totally agree with you. Don’t know if you were listening to the FAN during the rain delay the other night but I guy called up the Schmoozer and totally killed Hagin.
He and you are right. He sounds like “Generic Announcer guy”. Like the kind that would be in a B High School Sports Movie.
No, I’m 5 hours ahead of NY time so I listen on a next morning basis. When there are rain delays I usually fast forward to the action because, well, I’m impatient. I rarely hear the Schmoozer because his show is on when I’m asleep.
I love Church…talk about a gamer. He’s just about the only bright spot on this team right now, and he’s not even playing!
I know we get crazy here but the team has to be 1000% sure Church is okay before letting him play. Not because he is too important to the team but because he has a life to live with his wife and baby.
Yeah. I was only just reading an article about an NBA player who suffered a concussion in the early 60s and nobody realized how bad he was until it was too late. Poor guy ended up paralyzed.
A blow to the head is not like a sprained ankle.
I know with these guys it was the result of repeated concussions, but Al Toon and Harry Carson are just two guys from this area who still have problems.
Maybe it’s the right move with Church, but this team is ALWAYS cautious….and the wins just keep slipping away.
Too bad we can’t clone Church.
