Quote: Schneider Scratches his Head

by Matthew Cerrone on May 23rd, 2008 at 7:28 am

During last night’s loss to the Braves, Johan Santana allowed four runs through seven innings on 12 hits and 90 pitches while walking nobody.

Brian Schneider, on Santana’s performance, while talking to reporters after the game, said:

“You sit there and scratch your head and say, ‘What just happened right there?’ He battled.  He didn’t give up any longballs tonight.  They just singled, and singled. It’s frustrating.”

hooray, no home runs…seriously, though, he looked good through most of the game…what’s frustrating is that he was ahead of so many hitters with two-strike…each time, though, it seemed he would end up going full, then letting up a single…it happened over and over and over again

On the year, Santana is 5–3 with a 3.36 ERA, while checking in at seventh in the National League with 56 strike outs.

The Mets are 7–3 in his 10 starts this season.

as for santana on the year, i think he’s been good…not great…

…i think the ERA speaks for itself, and he seems to be striking out far less batters of late…also, he has kept his team in nearly every game, which would explain why the Mets have won 70 percent of his starts

at this pace, the Mets will go 22–10 in his projected 32 starts

In late March, half of voters on MetsBlog.com said they expect the Mets to win between 22 and 25 games this season when Santana steps to the mound, while 29 percent expected between 25 and 29 wins – the rest expected less than 22.

Quote: They Were Better

by Matthew Cerrone on May 23rd, 2008 at 7:07 am

Johan Santana, talking to reporters after last night’s game:

“This whole series, they played great baseball, they did the little things and they took advantage of it and we didn’t.  And that’s the reason why they won the game and won the series.  I mean, we tried, but they were better.”

…okay, well, there you have it

According to the New York Post, Braves fans chanted, “Ov-er-rat-ed,” as the Mets left the dugout following last night’s loss.

…it had to be the Braves…of all the teams, in all of the leagueugh

…however, johan is right…the Braves out-hustled the Mets in every moment of this series…what’s worse, as the game went on, while the Mets continued to play hard, they also played sloppy and looked like they were all trying to do too much, not too little, and thus made some pretty costly mistakes

most fans like to think that the solution to a slide like this is to play more aggressive, to play harder, to hustle more, etc., but, according to SNY’s Lee Mazzilli, and so many other baseball voices, the solution is to actually slow the game down…“Let the game come to you,” as they like to say…instead, right now, the Mets are pressing, and look tight, and so mistakes will happen and losses will pile up, especially when playing a team as hot and loose as the Braves, who can afford to take chances and play more aggressive…
