News: B’Mets Nick Evans to Replace Marlon
By Matthew Cerrone - May 24, 2008 10:18 am

According to the Press & Sun Bulletin, the Mets will promote Double-A 1B-OF Nick Evans from Binghamton to replace Anderson on the Mets 25–man roster.

Anderson suffered a hamstring injury during last night’s game against the Rockies.

In 171 at bats for the B’Mets this season, the 22–year-old, right-handed hitting Evans is batting .292 with eight doubles, eight HR, 31 RBI and 32 strike outs in 45 games.

    Can he bat second?

    • HOFMets57 says:

Talk about desperate. Not even half a season in AA, and he gets called up.

      We’re screwed.

      • Why? Many players come straight from AA and succeed. And the idea is that it gives the club the chance to evaluate him for a possible role next year. It also gives him needed major league experience.

If he sticks or impresses, I’m sure that he will eventually go through some big slumps. Fans need to be patient with young talent or they’ll forever be doomed to have clubs like this one — full of aging, often injured veterans who don’t earn their paychecks and have little fire.

      • ness589 says:

Jair Jurrjens skipped AA last year.

      • m29w_12789 says:

I would have rather have seen Dan Murphy or Carp brought up

      • metschamps08 says:

give the kid a chance, he only struck out 32 times in 45 games, thats pretty good. He cant be much worse than some of the guys were throwing out there now.(beltan 4hrs….please)

  2. sincekindergarten says:

    Showcase for trade bait, perhaps?

    • Tidewater says:

Trade bait???? We gotta start keeping some young ‘uns.

      • toomanyuniforms says:

Maybe it’s a good time to trade Delgado for a bag of balls, given that last night’s game was his semimonthly contribution to the team. Eat the salary. Not like it isn’t empty calories now. . . .

        • Tidewater says:

Who would want him, even if we paid his salary? He’s an out. No team is out there saying, “if only we had a shell of a former slugger to kill rallies.”

        • sincekindergarten says:

Someone–Jon Heyman, maybe–was suggesting a straight-up trade of Delgado and Richie Sexson. I don’t think so. Sexson strikes out waaaay too much, but when he does hit the ball, it goes a long way.

    • thatpreludeguy says:

Have you watched Carlos Delgado play 1st base???? I say we give him the job sight unseen!

    • atl0nym4 says:

Omar is already salivating at the prospect of trading him for a injury proned over the hill vetreran.

  3. Ryan Synagogue says:

Hey some youth. I guess this is where we start seeing how Omar has really done with the farm system. All of his draftees are in AA and A ball.

    Go get em Nick

  4. Flushing_is_Burning says:

not very familiar with the kid but why didn’t they promote someone for NO instead?

    • coke234 says:

I’m assuming the only guy they really wanted to bring up from NO is Brady Clark and I heard he is out for the year with an ankle injury…? Otherwise, the names aren’t too exciting from that outfield – Chris Aguila, Jesus Feliciano, Victor Mendez, Valentino Pascucci.

Evans absolutely rakes against lefties – .349/.414/.683 against them this year.

This team needs youth. Besides, at a time like this, I’d rather see what a guy like Evans will bring to the team rather than the guys in the NO outfield.

    • Tidewater says:

There’s nobody worth anything in NO. If you don’t know Evans, you should check him out. He’s one of three young B-Mets having a fantastic season along with Dan Murphy and Mike Carp.

    • toomanyuniforms says:

      What’s wrong with Pascucci?

      • Necciai27 says:

What’s wrong with Pascucci? Well, I know we’ve been suffering from a power outage at the plate, but hitting isn’t everything. Val Pascucci is easily the worst fielder I have ever seen with my own eyes. You’d think the baseball was a hand grenade. My father firmly believes Dick Stuart was a better fielder, and those fans old enough to remember Stuart should be frightened by that statement.

        • toomanyuniforms says:

OK. Well, that about settles that. Thanks! Sounds like a great backup interleague DH, and that’s about it.

        • Meddler says:

He’d have to be pretty awful for to be getting overlooked like this. Outfield defense isn’t really a concern with Beltran and Church. The LF on this team is surrounded by Beltran, Reyes, and Wright, and Beltran can even afford to cheat a little with Church in RF.

My only problem with the Evans callup is now you have to try and get him ABs. If you let Tatis and Pascucci battle for the position, you wouldn’t really have to committ to either one. Whichever one plays better gets the bulk of ABs and keeps their job when Alou comes back.

      • Wondy says:

Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t Stuart have one of the most creatively condescending nicknames in baseball history – Dr. Strangeglove?

If people think Pascucci’s worse, that’s probably saying a lot.

        • Necciai27 says:

Yep, Dr. Strangeglove. Also “Stonefingers,” though that was more near the beginning of his career. And yes, saying Val Pascucci is a worse fielder is saying a LOT.

    • 7-train says:

The way it is today, if you do well at AA you skip AAA and go straight to the bigs. AAA these days is a type of limbo where guys that can’t hack it at the big league level go. The idea is that if someone is excelling at AA just bring them up and see if they can play and let them make the adjustments to the speed etc of the game at the big league level.

I’ve been religiously following the excellent coverage of the B-Mets on this site and am real excited to see Evans, Murphy and Carp. This is great. I haven’t been this excited about our boys in 2 or 3 weeks.

  5. imissthemojo says:

We broke this news last night if you check the Valentin thread…long before the Press & Sun.

Evans has been batting as a middle of the lineup guy…usually 3d or 4th in the BMets lineup. It will be interesting the see if the Mets would test him at 2nd.

I hope it’s not a showcase for trade bait. I think if that was the case they would have left him in Bing. where he has been raking lately. I think its just desperation on the Mets part & the fact that the team in N.O. is pretty pathetic.

  6. stickguy says:

well, I have been asking for him for a while, so I guess this will prove whether I am an idiot or not!

For the guy who asked about NO, thye have only older journeymen with no future there, so might as well call up a guy that might be on the club in the future.

and this is not desperation. It is what every other team does, and what the Mets should have been trying to do. You have a s/t hole, and call up some one from the prospect pool to fill in. I don’t care that he was in AA.

And if this works, expect to see more AA guys as other geezers get hurt.

And if nothing else, the Mets must lead the league in hammy injuries.

    • Bench5urvivor says:

Pray for Mike Jacobs Part II. Maybe they’d hold onto him if he does.

    • wnymetsfan says:

Also my guess would be the AAA are not on the 40 which would mean possible juggling etc. for a journeyman. Evans I thinnk is already onn the roster so it is easier to call him plus he probably is thought of having a better chance to help out. Also do not forgot when Wright cam up he started in AA and basically only spent a month or so at AAA before the call up. A lot of guys skip AAA or spend short stints there. Miguel Cabrera would be another example the year he came up and played in the WS for Marlins he was brought up fromm AA.

  7. metsfan119 says:

This guy could hit .400 for a month and Willie will still bury him

  8. JeffKeppingersNumber1Fan says:

this team needs a shot of youth. i hope willie will let evans play every day in left field because there’s no point in him being up here otherwise.

let’s face it. endy has become the expos/phillies version of endy again with the bat. he had a few hits yesterday but he’s no more than a 5th OF and pinch runner at best.
with pagan and anderson on the DL, i don’t think anyone else should be playing ahead of evans.

    • Meddler says:

I’m actually with Keith on this one, I think Endy gets better when he plays more. We saw the same thing early in 2006, and once he started playing everyday he get into a groove.

  9. toomanyuniforms says:

    I’d also like for him to get innings at . . . I dunno . . . FIRST? I don’t believe we’re really seeing a Delgado renaissance.

Having a guy who isn’t experienced in left (someone correct me if I’m off, but my recollection is that he’s just learning the position) play a lot of left in the bigs after a two-level call-up is . . . risky.

Anyone know when/if Pagan gets back?

    • stickguy says:

relying on Marlon and Tatis isn’t?

ANd Endy probably wouldn’t win a hit-off with A Hern right now, and with all the guys slumping, they need to go for some offense.

      • toomanyuniforms says:

Right, but the classic Mets’ cycle is to rush players in desperate times, and they need to break that cycle. It’s risky for the Mets and for Evans. Right now, as Evans is a prospect, as desperate as the Mets are, they need to think about what he can do for them in the future more than what he can do right now. Novel concept for the Mets — foresight.

        • toomanyuniforms says:

Though I will grant you that it’s a much bigger problem for pitchers than hitters. If he’s comfortable in left, I don’t have a problem with it, really.

        • njmatt says:

Agreed. The Mets do this too much. Hopefully it’s just a cup of coffee and they aren’t hoping for it as a long term option (as much as I’d love it to be one). It just worries me that they don’t let these guys develop. Hopefully it’s not a repeat of bring Lmillz to the big leagues only to kill any trade value he had.

Or maybe he’s one of those mentally tough people that can handle failure…but it seems like most pro baseball players these days are not.

        • paganchurch says:

Everyone complains that there are guys on this team that are not playing anywhere near consistent (e.g. Delgado), and that there are others that aren’t playing with any heart or fire (e.g. Delgado), but then we complain too when we want to bring up a young guy from the minors to see if he can bring some life and production to this team? I don’t get it. I say bring him up, let him play, and see what we’ve got.

    • Bench5urvivor says:

Granted, Evans is no Miguel Cabrera, but the Marlins stuck him in right field in 2003 when he had little to no experience out there.

Based on the options available, it’s an effort on Omar’s part to infuse some youth that we the fans have been asking for.

The big question is F-Mart weren’t hurt, could he have possible gotten the call?

      • wnymetsfan says:

He might have especially since he was starting to hit when he went down. However we may have still seen Evans as he is able to essentially replace Marlon as an OF and 1B and at the same time allows Tatis to be used in a Marlon fashion.

  10. dr jones says:

I don’t want any of our young prospects anywhere close to Willie and his heartless chumps. They might rub off on him and he’ll bring that back to Binghamton and infect Carp and Martinez.

  11. metsfansberealistic says:

    GREAT MOVE

about freaking time this team got younger

what they need to do is call up another 2-3 like him at the same time and cut some of the dead flopping fish we’ve got

    Carp for Delgado anyone?

    Murphy for Castillo?

Carp/Murphy/Evans – bring em all up at once I say – take the pressure off each other at the same time, and end this era of

    decrepidity

    • stickguy says:

go for it. Unfortuneately, you have to wait for Castillo and Delgado to go on the DL before you see these moves.

Murphy though won’t come up for 2B, having never played the position before. Reyes though, or the other 2B/SS prospect that I can’t recall the name of might!

      • ravin108 says:

        Anderson Hernandez?

Who is basically a young version of Castillo with an even worse bat than the old Castillo

    • Don Logan says:

Those ideas don’t exactly flow w/ your handle name. Be realistic man. You’re ensuring a last place finish if you did that.

      • gipper82475 says:

Aren’t we on that trajectory already? I’d rather see a last place team of kids hwo hustle and play the right way than a last place team of bored veterans.

  12. metsfan119 says:

I’ve never seen a manager who is as threatened by young talent as Willie Randolph. If this guy managed the Oakland A’s in the early seventies, the Yankees would’ve won 8 championships with Reggie Jackson, Rollie Fingers, Catfish Hunter, and Vida Blue. This guy is HORRIBLE, bring back Art Howe, I’ll take apathy over supid stubborness any day. I’m not spending another dime on this team until Omar and the Wilpons show me they have a clue about the future direction of this team.

    • jose--jose-jose-jose says:

We don’t care. Don’t spend your money on this team, have fun with that. You’ve got to stop writing this under every single topic that is posted. Again, we don’t care if you don’t spend your money on this team!

And there are alot of things to get on Willie about at this point, but saying that you would rather have Art Howe is just plain stupid.

      • metsfan119 says:

Apparently you care enough to write a post. Mission accomplished. Dumbass.

    • MetLifer says:

Threatened by young talent? Who exactly are you referring to that is on this team that is young and not playing? The Mets would have to have young talent for Willie to be threatened by!

  13. stickguy says:

It really only makes sense to bring him up if he is going to play. If he is going to rot on the bench while Endy plays every day, then they might as well have brought up Pascucci (sp?)

Given how bad this season has been, the baseball gods owe one to Met fans. Maybe Evans will make a splash and have a big start, and cement the job for good? Hey, I can dream.

Of course, if he had a big first game, Willie would bench him for the next 3 anyway.

    • adropofvenom says:

Agreed, but right now I only really want to see Evans vs Lefties.

      Vs Lefties – .349/.414/.683
      Vs Righties – .259/.322/.454

I think he’s ML ready against a Lefty, but not so much against a Righty right now. And no, this is not relegating him to a career platoon role, but putting him in the best position to succeed right now by using him situationally. When he goes back down when people are healthy again (And he will), he can continue to work on hitting RHP.

    • MetLifer says:

From what I understand, Pascucci is an absolute butcher as a fielder. You can’t bring someone like that up. Evans probably came up by default because he can play IF and OF.

Again, with the WIllie bashing. Who exactly, that is on the bench currently, has had a great first game and then got benched by Willie. Didn’t he play Pagan over Endy when he was hot? He only sat him when he got cold and hit like .100 over the span of a week.

  14. theperfectgame says:

He’s cooled off somewhat since his scorching hot start, but he’s the only one of the three B-Mets mashers (Carp and Murphy being the others) who can legitimately play LF at this point. Best of luck, rook! Here’s hoping you make the most of this.

  15. imissthemojo says:

Murphy can’t replace Castillo…he’s predominantly a 3rd baseman, with a bit of experience at 1st.

Trust me, Dan Murphy is not the guy you want to replace Castillo with.

  16. stickguy says:

You know what the saddest part about this year might be?

Before the seasno, everyone was worried that Delgado wouldn’t be able to stay healthy and play every day. But he has, which is sad!

Delgado is basically Giambi at this point, without the walks and deent OBP. Lousy average, few hits, hut a decent looking HR total as a pure guess hitter. Totally drags down the team.

  17. preztommy says:

Will he start in left while Alou is gone? Or will he just rot on the bench, knowing Willie?

  18. Ryan Synagogue says:

    1b: Carp
    2b: Wright
    SS: Reyes
    3b: Murphy
    LF: Evans
    CF: Beltran
    RF: Church
    c: Schneider

    ok back to reality:

    1b: Delgarbage
    2b: Castillo
    ss: Reyes
    3b: Wright
    lf: Tatis
    cf: beltran
    rf: church

    • toomanyuniforms says:

Moving Wright to 2nd= really dumb. We are not trying to squeeze prospects into the lineup. We are trying to win ballgames. This move seems a little desperate to me (duh.) We all like young players and want to see the Mets go with youth, but for this sort of assignment, unless Pascucci is allergic to left field, I’d think you’d want the more experienced, professional hitter.

      • toomanyuniforms says:

Though note above, where Neccai informs me of the true extent of Pascucci’s one-dimensionality. Suffice it to say, it seems like he legitimately may be allergic to the entire diamond.

    • dr jones says:

I would take that line up in a second.. It wouldn’t even bother me if we didn’t win another game. At least we would be moving forward not backwards

    • Bench5urvivor says:

I really think the more likely scenario would be wright to first with someone like muprhy, etc at 3rd post delgado

not saying i’m for it, but wright won’t ever be a 2nd bagger

  19. dykstraw says:

they can’t seriously bring this kid up to ride pine, can they?

  20. imissthemojo says:

i sure would hope not…they need to give this kid a shot

  21. teufelshuffle86 says:

Last night during game this guy picked up a ball that was NOT foul, and tossed it into the stands. Perfect match.

  22. metsfansberealistic says:

    our new starting lineup

    Reyes SS
    Church RF
    Evans LF
Carp 1B (cut Delgado – if he can’t hit, his fielding isn’t worth it)
Wright 3B (he doesn’t belong in the 3 hole – too erratic)
Beltran CF (batting behind DW gives David better pitches and
    takes pressure off Carlos)
Valentin 2B (cut Castillo – admit the mistake)
    Schneider C

    • metsfansberealistic says:

      further to Castillo

mind you, it’s quite possible we got Santana because we committed to Castillo

if so, is that Omar’s fault, or Santana’s

maybe Castillo can be an overpaid coach

      • toomanyuniforms says:

OK, now you have Evans and Carp 3/4 on the big club. Wow. I like young talent, too, but . . . let’s not get ahead of ourselves. What’s your screen name again?

        • theperfectgame says:

Well, clearly because Wright is too erratic, unlike a pair of minor leaguers who have never played above AA. Obviously, they will be pillars of consistency, just like all rookies…

    • losmets5 says:

That’s not that bad, but I like this better:

      1. Reyes SS
      2. Church RF
      3. Wright 3B
      4. Beltran CF
      5. Evans 1B
      6. Tatis LF
      7. Schneider C
      8. Castillo 2B

If Valentin can come up, take out Castillo and switch him and Schneider.

      • Ryan Synagogue says:

Id rather see Beltran 3rd and Wright 4th. Beltran looks at too many pitches, and his OBP is more suited for a tablesetter

        • ravin108 says:

Which is why Beltran should bat 2nd

        • yawledog08 says:

No kidding when are tyhey going to realize Beltran should be hitting second. Church clean up and wright third.

        • 4JoeOrsulak says:

Church a clean up hitter ain’t.

Wright is the most consistent hitter on the team. Look at his season #s, he has been steadily climbing at every aspect of the game. Even his improvement rate is consistent. He is ahead of the pace he was on last year. He’s been off. He’s recovering from a BAD early May slump. He hasn’t gotten his timing down yet. He’s obviously not on his game. He’s fouling off a lot of mistakes and just missing a lot of pitches.

          He’s putting up a 900+ OPS.

Wright erratic? Without him, this team is nothing.

  23. losmets5 says:

I like the looks of this guy. If he can do what he’s been doing down with the B-Mets, then he might be able to help the Mets out of their slump. Please, Evans, walk into my Met loving heart. I hope to see him at 1st today.

  24. k-mets says:

According to Evan Roberts, Nick played left field yesterday, and he threw the ball to stand when he thought the ball was foul when it was fair…Boy what a farm system we have

    • toomanyuniforms says:

I’m sure it was a ploy because he thought the runner would score from first. . . . Yeah . . . .

    • adropofvenom says:

Nobody ever said Evans strong point was his Defense. That’s why he’s a 1B/LF. But as long as he can hit, I’m okay with that.

  25. metsfansberealistic says:

    or

if Evans is to play 1B and Chavez in LF, why not leadoff with Endy and take a little pressure off Reyes

    then lineup could be

    Chavez LF
    Reyes SS
    Beltran CF
    Wright 3B
    Church RF
    Evans 1B
    Schneider C
    Vargas P
    Castillo 2B

(yes, Castillo should bat 9th – Vargas probably won’t be in the game long enough to get more than 1 AB anyway….)

    • Mets4life90 says:

I’m hoping Evans can spark this team up a bit. Maybe seeing a younger kid around with all the hope of him impressing the Mets brass will help out the whole team.

    • Bench5urvivor says:

cuz then they’d have a lead-off hitter allergic to getting on base

in all honesty, what has endy done since “the catch” other than rip his hamstring?

  26. Necciai27 says:

As an avid follower of the Mets farm system, Evans has a bit of an edge over Mike Carp due to his ability to hit breaking stuff. At least from the right side. Evans can be fooled by righty breaking ball and sinkerball pitchers. He hits righty power pitchers with sub-par breaking stuff and pretty much all lefties. Dan Murphy has a more even platoon split, but but he’s not particularly dominant against either side of the plate.

    • stickguy says:

Then Evans will fit right in on this team. Everyone else is fooled by RH breaking pitches too (maybe he can room with DW?)

      • Necciai27 says:

Give Evans a while and a chance to play every day and he’ll figure it out. He likely will only hit about .260 vs. RHP at the most, but he does show signs of being on a pretty good learning curve (unlike Carp, who seems absolutely clueless against breaking ball-tossing southpaws). He can go with pitches, hit hanging breaking stuff from RHP’s, and I do think he can develop into at the very least a solid (if not great) MLB first baseman.

Of course, there is a problem. He needs regular playing time to develop. And of course, as we know, Willie will go with “his guys,” even if Evans is batting .340 from both sides of the plate…

  27. stickguy says:

How bad is Marlon anyway? Anything more than a mild tweak and he could be done for the year.

At least there is a job open for Delgado now as a LH pinch hitter off the bench and back up 1B!

  28. toomanyuniforms says:

    I would actually consider:

    Reyes
    Castillo
    Church (if he can play)
    Beltran
    Tatis
    Evans
    Chavez
    Schneider
    Vargas

with Wright getting a day off. I definitely would have recommended this had they won. In the middle of a losing streak, however, Wright may need to be out there to avoid complete psychological meltdown on the bench. He seems like the type who wouldn’t sit well during adversity.

    So.. . .

    Reyes
    Church
    Wright
    Beltran
    Tatis
    Evans
    Schneider
    Castillo
    Vargas

    • toomanyuniforms says:

Sorry — day game after night game, so Castro in for Schneider.

    • gomets019 says:

You’re dead on with moving Reyes to second in the order. You look at Reyes and Castillo, and clearly the numbers (on base and slugging) favor a switch.
      Castillo
      Reyes
      Church
      Beltran
      Wright
      Alou/Evans/Delgado
      Delgado/Evans
      Schneider

  29. stickguy says:

thinking about the line up, at some pint, should they consider moving Reyes out of the 1 slot? Make him the 2 hole hitter and let him hack. Of course this means having another guy to hit lead off…

More realistically, I am back on the Beltran in the 2 hole bandwagon. I just think he would fit better there, and would really do well. It’s almost like he is a natural 2 hole guy, trying to force himself (badly) to think/act like a clean up hitter.

But, I would not move DW. With the players currently available, I would plug Church in there (as soon as he is back healthy). Alou could aslo do it if he ever came back.

    Reyes
    Beltran
    DW
    Church
    Deldono
    Evans
    Schneider
    Castillo

Not a pretty bottom 4, but the top 4 could be really good!

    • stickguy says:

Man, this makes me realize how badly the Mets need a masher for the middle of the lineup.

    • dykstraw says:

castillo should be hitting 9th. not putting his OBP in front of the top of the order is just obstinate and stupid.

  30. cb32 says:

At the beginning of the game the graphic with the starting lineup had no one in left field even though Marlon was playing out there. Even the Gods were trying to tell the Mets something and yet no one listened. Now we have lost Marlon too.

    Don’t say we weren’t warned…

  31. theperfectgame says:

I don’t think there’s any way Evans doesn’t bat 8th, at least for the first few games, but I think it’d be better to bat him 7th, since he’s much less likely to see good pitches to hit batting directly in front of the pitcher.

    • GeorgeThomas says:

Remember, David Wright batted 7th and 8th for a long time when he first came up.

  32. the_other_matt says:

All winter long I came here hoping to see a Mets trade or signing that will help this team win in 08 and beyond. Now during the season I find myself logging on just to see if Willie was fired and the house-cleaning has begun. I feel cheated as a fan. Screw you Mets…Wait. I still love you Mets, don’t be mad. I’ll still watch you like I have since the 70s.

    • Tidewater says:

I do that too. After every loss I hop on to see if that night was THE night. I’m still waiting. It shouldn’t be long now.

  33. DMAT89 says:

wow, if Evans is on the bench today there is going to be a riot in the comments section today

  34. metsfanmurph says:

This kid is on pace for 100 strikeouts in AA. So if he is overmatched in AA he has no shot against major league pitching. I would have rather seen the Murphy guy get called up I like his left handed bat.

    • choon328 says:

We have too many lefties as it is and Murphy is a 1st Baseman/DH. Evans was called up b/c he has the most experience in left.

      • stickguy says:

Murphy is actually a 3B, who has gotten a little time at 1B and LF, and probably some DH.

        • adropofvenom says:

Yeah, but he’s been a butcher at 3rd so far so a position change seems rather likely.

    • adropofvenom says:

How many big leaguers strike out 100 times a year? It’s not all that uncommon anymore.

      • Tidewater says:

Yes, but the point is he’s not in the big leagues. He’s doing that against kid pitchers.

    • chew13 says:

      Should have called up Pascucci

  35. choon328 says:

Well it’s safe to assume that Fernando Martinez would have been called up had he been healthy b/c he’s hitting .395 in his last 10 games. Evans is having a very good year too so it’ll be interesting to see if this is the beginning of a new and younger era.

For all the fans who are worried about rushing prospects to the majors just remember that Albert Pujols played 1 year of “A” ball and then played in the majors the following season and hit .329, 37 HR’s and 130 RBI’s.

    • wesdp1988 says:

so we should expect pujols? sounds legit

      • choon328 says:

I’m not saying you should expect Pujols or anything near that but you also just shouldn’t assume it’s too early to bring a guy up. B/c me, you or anybody else who doesn’t work for the organization has no clue.

  36. stickguy says:

hopefully we do wee more of the prospects as need be during the year to fill in for injuries.

And hopefully the GM makes a commitment to filling a few of the 2009 gaps with young talent, even if it means living with some growing pains.

And yes, that could mean Evans/Martinez haring left, and Murphy or Carp playing 1B.

They are a veteran team at the other 6 positions, so they should be able to absorb a couple of rookies. Frankly, they almost have to.

Maybe 3, if Neise can have a good 2nd half and win the 5th spot in the rotation.

Please, no more 32 YO FAs. Just doesn’t work.

Oh, and Teix is what, 29 now? So yes, if they give him the big 6-7 year contract, they easily could be paying huge dollors again for a guy that already had his peak years and is declining. That, and he will be as old as Delgado by the end!

  37. stickguy says:

A mediocre lefty is starting today. Perfect time to get Evans into the action. Also a good test to see if Willie is going to comepletely ignore the kid.

If he doesn’t start today, there was no pint in even calling him up.

    • Don Logan says:

Francis may have struggled early on this season but he’s much better than “mediocre.” I wouldn’t expect Evans in left today. I’d expect Tatis there.

  38. wesdp1988 says:

look at the stats for carp, evans, and murphy with runners in scoring position…. hopefully they don’t get taught the patented bat on the shoulder look

  39. cockblockandrun says:

I wonder if Santana has to have a talk with Willie to play Evans just like Pedro did back in 05 for Mike Jacobs? Willie, you better play Evans.

  40. Church says:

I think he will pinch hit. If he doesn’t get a hit Willie wont care. But if he does Willie will give him the Pagan treatment.

  41. the Straw says:

Evans will probably start today. Francis is a lefty…when the the right handed bat in the lineup.

But for you all who are asking to bring up all the AA guys. Your basically saying its time to give up on this season now. These guys are not going to come in here and hit .300 and drive in runs. They are not major league talent.
Its too early to just give up on the season.

I think the first move is to keep the Castillos, Delgado, etc in the lineup but bring in new coaches and see if that can turn things around.

Its just waaay too early to totally give up on the season and promote all the prospects.

    • metsfansberealistic says:

      ridiculous

Delgado & Castillo will be the same no matter who’s the coach or coaches

      they both need to go

  42. slanginsanjuan says:

Oh…and Evans throwing the ball in the stands….that’s on a manager keeping his guys in the game. Evans is a tool (in a positive way). I liked how the Rockies manager makes their team (one of the best defenses in baseball) do extra drills daily. They emphasize defense…making everything routine through repetition. They need a new preparation program which can really only be brought in by new blood and wholesale adoption by the coaching team, manager, and even owners. The team will fall in line…and if such is the case…the bad apples will be exposed. It’s a chance for a new beginning.

  43. mpg217 says:

time to sign bonds? seriously, he’ll get on base, and can distract the media enough the rest of the team can just focus on playing ball.

    • MH says:

The Wilpon’s would never do it…they got rid of Davey Johnson because he had a live-in girlfriend…They aren’t into what they regard as fallen angels…they show them the door and close it behind them.

  44. MH says:

Where is Pagan? I thought he was put on the DL even though he was able to hit. He had a PH appearance right before they DL’ed him…In fact, didn’t Gary Cohen say something about him having been put or kept on the DL despite the fact that he was ready to play because they needed to make room for Wise? Or did that concern someone else? When is he due to come off?

  45. chew13 says:

It should have been Pascucci. Evans has only had a half season @ AA. Moving on, for everybody writing off Delgado… Let’s give him until the all-star break. He has hit three home runs this week. (Even if MLB only counted two). Two of those came with “ducks on the pond”. He could be warming up.

    • MH says:

      I agree.

    • MinayaOmar says:

I, for one, am relieved the callup is *not* Pascucci. After watching him for 2 seasons with Chiba Lotte, I realized that he’s maddeningly inconsistent.

He’s a very tall guy and has an imposing stance, and when he makes contact he crushes the ball. The problem is that he’s an all or nothing hitter and a strikeout machine; a 2000s version of Rob Deer.

Consider that in his last season with Chiba he hit .222. Couple that with his outfield play described in previous comments.

I’m glad it’s Evans, even if he’s raw.

    • jmaccobras14 says:

Yes, I totally agree. I was at Game 3 of the Subway Series and even some Yankee fans said it was fair and the guy that got the ball has the mark of the pole. Even Beltran is heating up maybe its our #1 and 3 batters.

  46. adropofvenom says:

Lineup is In, Evans batting 8th.

    Reyes, ss
    Castillo, 2b
    Wright, 3b
    Beltran, cf
    Tatis, rf
    Delgado, 1b
    Castro, c
    Evans, lf
    Vargas, rhp

Tatis 5th strikes me as really odd….I would assume it was originally Church but they scratched him, but why not move Tatis down the lineup then?

  47. gipper82475 says:

Glad they are bringing up the kid. But, Willie will just let him rot on the bench unless Omar orders him to play the kid….

Hey, “metsarebest,” if you are still around…

From today’s Daily News Adam Rubin article:

“DENVER – Where’s the support for Willie Randolph?

He didn’t legitimately get it from GM Omar Minaya, who arrived for a hastily arranged visit and would offer only a carefully worded endorsement of his manager……

During an in-game media address, Minaya would not deny Friday’s Daily News report that Randolph’s job was in jeopardy if he did not have a successful weekend. Instead, asked point-blank if Randolph’s job was in imminent danger, the GM vaguely said: “I’m just going to tell you that Willie Randolph is our manager. He has my support. He has our ownership’s support.”

So much for your bally-hooed “vote of confidence.”

  48. choon328 says:

    That is exactly my point

  49. breadclock says:

Hope it doesn’t turn out this way, but my initial reaction is this is bad news for Evans being called up. That means he was picked as the official minor league prospect to screw up. He won’t get many at bats up here by Willie in his first cup of coffee. Now that he’s officially registered on the “minor league shuttle,” he’s going to be the guy to get jerked up and down, so he won’t get effective playing time anywhere, stunting his development, while also burning off his options. We’ve seen the movie before. Before you know it, he’ll be the guy who for some reason didn’t show anything on the Mets, didn’t continue his upward development in the minors, and has to be traded to Kansas City for a no-hit minor league middle infielder because he has no more options.

    • breadclock says:

Of course if Evans keeps smacking doubles everytime up, all the above is moot. I think. :)

      • MudvilleNine says:

Are you kidding. Everybody that posted in here will totally deny saying all that stuff. That Evans was the right guy to call up, that of course Willie would put him in the starting lineup, and so on and so forth. LOL

    • youknowwhatimsayin says:

      I really hope not.

If nothing else, I am hoping Omar has opened his eyes enough to realize the mistake he made trying to put his eggs on old, injury prone players.

Alou and Duque are wonderful players, but none do any good not being on the field. Omar has to turn the page and not depend on these guys anymore. I think doing that hurts the team more than it helps.

I hope that Evans flourishes. Willie needs to also stop being Daddy Jacka$$ and stop throwing wet blankets on these kids when they do well. He use to do this ad nauseum with Heilman a couple of years ago… and then he trashed Pagan in the media. Not very nice.

  50. kickingmule says:

yeah, it’s amazing how so many judge a player they have never seen play, and then assign attributes to him as well. of course these are the same fans who ripped Brian Church all winter as “4th ourfielder at best” and demanded the mets to get Pelfry up from AAA two years ago at this time.

first impressions of Evans (after seeing just one game obviously) is that he reminds me of Dave Magadan from the right side. He insides out everything, has good at bats, and unfortunately runs alot like Magadan.

    • TheOrangeChannel says:

That would be Ryan Church….just sayin’. On the same token we did see Church fairly often as a National, but most of that time was spent mixed with their myriad of outfielders.

  51. youknowwhatimsayin says:

Evans looked better in one day than Easley and Catch McBunt (Endy Chavez) have looked all season.

Willie, if he is smart, will ride the hot hand, and not subject fans to more “I need to get Chavy some at-bats”… IMHO, Endy has been allowed to milk that catch in the 2006 NLCS, to the point that his terrible lack of hitting is overlooked.

Now, I am NOT advocating that Evans get a permanent starting job, but I am saying better be in the starting lineup tomorrow. He seems like a poised, quietly confident kid, who had the right hitting approach today.

I am no big fan, but I am willing to see Tatis get a shot at 2B. I am sick of Castillo and his knees.

  52. bill metsiac says:

    “Welcome abroad, Nick Evans, ”

    Is he going overseas?
