- Welcome aboard, Nick Evans, who went 3-for-4 with three doubles and 2 RBI.
- Beltran kicked things off in the first with a three-run double in the first and it was no looking back as finally this offense was able to string hits together and not let a pitcher off the hook, by scoring five in the top of the first.
- David Wright launched his ninth homerun of the season in second while looking a bit more relaxed at the plate for the first time in a week.
- The offense was patiently aggressive in the batters box and on the base paths today and that is something that has been lacking this season. They worked counts into their favor and then attacked. Good to see. Let’s hope this continues.
- Claudio Vargas was solid allowing two runs through seven innings. At no point during the game did he have a real stressful inning, which is a rarity this season since the offense hasn’t given the starters much breathing room on a consistent basis.
- By the way, the Mets are 18-7 when their starting pitch goes at least six innings, which they have done 11 times in their last 16 games.
- It was a good win for this team, relieving a bit of pressure. And, although today’s victory doesn’t wipe out their five game losing streak, it should help them to stop pressing so much going forward.
The Mets look to take the rubber game of their three-game set versus the Rockies tomorrow with John Maine taking the hill, starting at 3:05 pm.
